More Filipinos search for extrajobs, pay to augment income

THE TRADE UNION Congress of the Phil-ippines said that the number of Filipinosaspiring to have extra jobs to augmenttheir income and make both ends meet

h a v ereached al-most 9 mil-lion and ita t t r i b u t e dthis to jobm i s m a t c hand low sal-ary.

“A s i d efrom mis-match, it ishighly pos-sible that be-cause of lowsalary—no-

tably, the daily take home pay—the under-employment rate grows at a very alarm-ing pace. It’s puzzling trade unionists andcausing discomfort to some concernedgovernment officials,” Gerard Seno, TUCPSecretary General, said in a statement sentto the regional newspaper Mindanao Ex-aminer.

He said more and more people arelooking to have an additional job or towork for longer hours to augment theirincome. “Totoo na dumarami ang mgamanggagawa na nagsa sideline orrumaraket so to speak, to have extra in-come for their families to survive,” he said.

Seno, citing a recent TUCP study, saidin Metro Manila, although the minimumdaily pay is P456, the real daily take homeminimum pay is only P306 pesos after fac-toring inflation of basic commodities andafter mandatory deductions of taxes,Philhealth, Pag-ibig, and SSS.

The National Statistics Office recordalso showed that there are 7.934 millionunderemployed in January 2013, up by916,000 since January 2012 (7.018 million)

and 7.050million in2011.

The all-time highu n d e re m -p l o y m e n trate in sixyears was re-corded inJuly 2012with 8.55million withmore than80% of themin the agri-

culture and services sector like securityguards, tellers, clerks, waiters, mechanics, technicians, salesaldies, and servicecrews.

The TUCP has recently filed an P85wage increase petition for Metro Manilabefore the wage board and also an P80wage increase in Davao regional wageboard. If approved, Davao workers willreceive a minimum nominal pay of P381.Currently, the P301 minimum pay inDavao region has a buying capacity ofonly P216.24 and after mandatory deduc-tions, the real take home pay would onlybe around P191.75.

In the light of the issue, the Labor de-partment has introduced the CommunityEntrepreneural Development Trainingand the Integrated Livelihood Program toencourage workers to engage in livelihoodlike selling home-made food and items toaugment family income.

Bam Aquino, binansagang‘oportunista, ambisyoso’

(Min-danao Examiner)

Anakbayan leader challengesAkbayan politician in public debate

MANILA - Dismissing at-tempts to create a 'RisaHontiveros-Nancy Binay'debate as a 'last-ditch ef-fort to save Hontiveros'failing Senate bid,' a youthleader has challenged herto have a public debatewith him instead.

In an attempt to pres-sure the UNA bet, support-ers of Hontiveros havespammed the social net-working sites Twitter andFacebook with 'memes'and other calls for a pub-lic debate between thetwo. Hontiveros, despitehaving the resources andbacking of the Aquino ad-ministration, has beenlagging behind electionsurveys.

"Clearly, Mrs. Binaydoes not want a public de-bate. If Risa truly wants toinform voters and clarifystances on various socialissues, we are more than

available to be her coun-terpart in a public debate.Name the time and place,we'll be there," VencerCrisostomo, nationalchairperson of Anak-bayan, said in a statementsent to the regional news-paper Mindanao Exam-iner.

Crisostomo took the'public' nature of the de-bate one step further byasking Filipino netizenson Twitter and Facebookto suggest topics.

Crisostomo's chal-lenge has gone 'viral', withhis original challenge onTwitter (@venzie), as wellas screen captures of hischallenge on Facebook, being shared hundreds oftimes. Yet until today, therehas been no responsefrom Hontiveros.

"No one in Anakbayanwould be surprised if Risawould chicken-out from

the challenge. After all, sheis most likely scared thather carefully cultivatedimage of a 'social reform-ist' would be easilycrushed, and her role as'presidential chuwariwap'and defender of PresidentAquino's anti-people andanti-poor policies wouldbe bared for everyone tosee," he said.

"Siguro na-traumasiya sa pagkapahiya ngmga kapwa niya Akbayannoong nakaraan. But Risacan take her time. Ouroffer’s good until ElectionDay,” he added.

In October, leaders ofAkbayan and Crisostomoengaged in a word war inseveral TV and radio ap-pearances after the latter, along with several otheryouth leaders, filed a dis-qualification complaintagainst Akbayan from theparty list race.

At

M a t a t a n d a a n gnagpatawag ng press confer-ence ang mga magulang ni

(Mindanao Examiner)

New hike in Metroelectricity bill criticized

MANILA – A Filipino mediagroup called Alab ngMamamahayag has criti-cized the a new hike in elec-tricity bill in Manila, sayingthe Manila Electric Com-pany has yet to refund topower consumers millionsof pesos in excess collec-tions.

He said Meralco willcharge an additional 27centavos per kilowatt houror 22% increase per P1.4917for every kilowatt hour start-ing April after the Energy

Regulatory Commission ap-proved Meralco’s request ofadditional fees on utility dis-tribution.

He also urged the law-makers to do something towithdraw the Electric Power

Industry Reform Act.

EPIRA contained the le-gal framework of theprivatization of the NationalPower Corporation and thederegulation of the powerindustry. It promised thatelectricity bills will lessenbut became the result of itwas the opposite.

Yap said since theEPIRA was not able to per-form its purpose the lawshould be trashed. The Phil-ippines pays the secondhighest electricity bills inAsia , second only to Japan.(Nanet Villa-fania)

Body of Filipina chef arrives from Bahrain

A collage of Google photos of the Boston Marathon bombings shows the aftermath of the twin attacks in the UnitedStates. (Mindanao Examiner)

MANILA – The body of aFilipina pastry chef whowas found dead inside thePhilippine Embassy shelterin Bahrain has arrived inManila and claimed by hergrieving family.

Kathleen Ann Ilagan,31, was reported to havecommitted suicide while inthe shelter, but her familydisputed the police reportin Bahrain and has askedPhilippine authorities toinvestigate her death.

John Leonard Mon-terona, a regional coordi-nator of the Migrante-Middle East, said Ilagan’sremains was flown by GulfAirlines and that her sisterMicheileen confirmed tohim the arrival of the body.

“The Ilagan family

doubted the police reportthey received from thePhilippine Embassy inBahrain that OFWKathleen committed sui-cide as they seriously castdoubt on the circum-stances surrounding herdeath.”

“The family said shecould not have fatallyhanged herself from thedoorknob which is onlywaist-high. Secondly, there was no clothesline orany source at the Em-bassy-shelter that wouldprovide a cord for hang-ing, and thirdly, therecould or should have beenother persons or securitypersonnel at theEmbassy’s shelter whocould have witnessed the

incident if indeed shehanged herself,” Mon-terona said.

Ilagan’s sister also saidthat along the remains ofIlagan inside the casketwere a death certificateand the police report, andother documents related

to repatriation formalities. However, there was no au-topsy report.

Monterona said theIlagan family is poised tohave the body autopsied.“Yes po, meron po kamingplan na ipa-autopsy.Aayusin po namin,”

Monterona quoted Ila-gan’s sister as saying.

Monterona said he,too, was puzzled by theswift repatriation ofIlagan’s remains. “Wecould certainly notice thetime difference in the re-patriation formalities be-tween an OFW remains onmysterious death case andto natural death due to ill-ness or due to accident ofan OFW abroad. Theformer will only take 2 to3 days, while usually re-mains repatriation willtake at least three monthsto a maximum of 6months,” he said.

“There is really some-thing wrong why the Phil-ippine Embassy did notthoroughly probe her

death. Is there somethingthey need to cover up?” heasked.

Monterona said thePhilippine Ambassador toBahrain will have a lot ofexplaining to do in con-nection with the death ofthe Filipina. “We demandthe recall of PhilippineAmbassador to Bahrainand the caretaker of itsshelter. All embassy andlabor officials in Philip-pine Embassy in Bahrainshould be investigated,”he said.

There was no immedi-ate statement from thePhilippine Embassy orAmbassador Maria Co-razon Bahjin about the al-legations. (MindanaoExaminer)

TRUE SERVANTShis southern province, which is at theforefront of a massive humanitarian mis-sion to save and assist Filipino refugeesfrom Sabah, continues to work silently -T

free from media blitz and publicity - in an effortto alleviate the harrowing situation of thousandsof people fleeing the crackdown on illegal mi-grants and workers in the eastern state of Malay-sia.

One dramaticevent occurred inParang town as nar-rated to the MindanaoExaminer by FazlurAbdulla, head of theSulu Area Coordinat-ing Center, when aboatload of Muslimrefugees, mostly fromSulu province, arrivedfrom Sabah, but re-fused to disembark onthe sight of policemenassisting in the hu-manitarian mission.

This is Abdulla'snarrative. "This is atrue story of a briefdrama when the seavessel M/L Anraisadocked in the sub-portof Parang town in Suluprovince. I sent theSulu Area Coordinat-ing Council team ledby Munir A. Dail, Ex-ternal Relations Of-ficer, to join the groupof Department of So-cial Welfare and Devel-opment to the townwhen report of Sabahevacuees reached us.According to Mr. Dail, some evacuees werehesitant to disembarkprobably due to theirapprehension with thepresence of policegroup and other repsof authorities meetingthem.

He boarded theboat and talked with

an elder man of thatgroup where they wereassured that the pres-ence of the authoritiesin the wharf was to wel-come and appropriatelyhelp them. When theywere convinced, one byone they disembarkedfrom the boat to thewaiting teams who pro-vided them attentionand care. It is the es-sence of Sulu Humani-tarian Reception forSabah Evacuees, whichincludes MLGU ofParang and Jolo, DSWD,Parang Health District,PNP, Marines, RPMA,and other local officialsand groups.

Abdulla said theearly preparation of theSulu provincial govern-ment ahead of the hu-manitarian crisis inSabah was critical to theefforts of the Aquino ad-ministration to effec-tively address the exo-dus of Filipinos follow-ing the intrusion of 200followers of Sulu SultanJamalul Kiram to LahadDatu town to exert thehistorical rights of theSultanate of Sulu on thethe oil-rich island.

He said Sulu Gover-nor Sakur Tan immedi-ately convened the Pro-vincial Peace and OrderCouncil to discuss con-tingencies on the possi-

bility that thousands ofFilipinos might fleeSabah due to the con-flict. Tan said althoughhe was worried that theprovincial governmentresources are not

enough to accommo-date the number ofevacuees that wouldcome to Sulu, and thenegative impact thiswould bring on thepeace and order situa-

tion in the province, hesaid "our province mustbe prepared for anyeventuality that mayarise from the situationin Sabah."
