irst Reading: Isaiah 56:1,6-7

This first reading comes from a prophet in the Isaiah tradition who preached to Jews newly returned to the Holy Land after their Exile in Babylon. This prophet had a universal outlook and proclaimed that pagans could also become part of God’s people.

econd Reading: Romans 11:13-15,29-32

Continuing the discussion begun in last week’s second reading, the apostle Paul expresses the hope that his Gentile converts will live such righteous lives that his Jewish kinfolk will recognize God’s presence in the Church. Since God’s call is irrevocable, both Jews and Gentiles will inevitably realize that God’s mercy has graced everyone.

ospel: Matthew 15:21-28

In this portion from Matthew’s Gospel, a Gentile woman implores Jesus’ aid. Jesus, at first, seems to hold such pagans in low esteem, but then responds to the woman’s arguments with praise for her faith.

We invite you to prayerfully reflect on the Readings for the week of August 20

GOOD SAMARITAN MINISTRY

Need help? Our ministry can assist parishioners with shopping, banking, doctor and dentist appointments, and other errands. Contact our coordinator for August, Jeannette Fredericks (973) 267-7152. Good Samaritan Ministry has an additional service: telephone visitation for anyone who is a shut-in or who just needs a friendly “Hello” on a regular basis. We all need to know someone cares about us, and a silent phone can be almost deafening when you are lonely. If you or someone you know would like a call from Terri, our volunteer Telephone Visitor, please call the Good Samaritan Coordinator of the month (in August it is Jeannette Fredericks (973) 267-7152) with the name and telephone number of the Assumption parishioner to be called. The Coordinator will pass the information to Terri, and conversation between the two will begin on a regular basis for as long as the individual finds it beneficial. As always with the Good Samaritans Ministry, all information is confidential.

JESUS AND THE CANAANITE WOMAN

At that time, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon. And behold, a Canaanite woman of that district

came and called out, " Have pity on me, Lord, Son of David! My daughter is tormented by a demon ."

[Jesus] said in reply, " It is not right to take the food of children and throw it to the dogs." She said, " Please,

Lord, for even the dogs eat the scraps that fall from the table of their masters." (Matthew 15: 21-28)

Here is a reflection I hope you will enjoy. Many years ago, in a Thailand village, a Buddhist woman named Malai became a Christian at the

request of her husband. The village's strict and overly scrupulous priest at the time, a missionary, told Malai that she must never again go inside a Buddhist temple because that would give people the impression that she was not a sincere Christian.

Her elderly mother continued to practice Buddhism. Malai would take her mother to the temple gate,

but faithful to the injunction of her pastor, she had to ask strangers to take her mother inside the temple itself and help her light the incense sticks and worship. In Thai society, to take care of one's elders was a sacred responsibility. It broke Malai's heart that she had to rely on the kindness of strangers to assist her mother and could not help her herself. But she obeyed her pastor.

One day while waiting for her mother to return from going inside the temple on the arm of a

stranger, Malai began to cry. A Buddhist nun who was sweeping the forecourt of the temple saw her. The nun stopped her sweeping and gently took Malai's arm. The nun asked what was wrong. Malai explained that as a Christian she could not go inside the temple to assist her elderly mother as she prayed. The nun stared for some time at the ground and then responded:

"Those who recognize the Holy and are moved to worship it, are never among strangers, no matter

what their religion happens to be. And those who are moved by the Holy to be compassionate are already one family. Do not let your heart be so troubled . . . Mercy has given you the opportunity to allow someone else to perform an act of compassion towards your mother. Is that not beautiful?" [As told by John Beeching, M.M., in Maryknoll, November-December 2016.]

Malai's encounter with the Buddhist nun mirrors the Canaanite woman's exchange with Jesus. In

our common search for God in our lives, the labels and stereotypes that separate different classes and religions collapse; the search for meaning and purpose - what the Buddhist nun calls "the Holy" - transforms "strangers" into a community and "family" dedicated to the good of all. Just as the wisdom of the Buddhist nun transforms Malai's perspective of those who help her mother, Jesus' compassion for the Canaanite woman and his healing of her daughter breaks down the wall between Gentile and Jew. The call to discipleship demands that we look beyond labels and stereotypes to realize that every one of us is a child of God, brothers and sisters all. (Connections)

GREAT IS YOUR FAITH!

It seems to be endemic to the human race for some to believe they are more deserving than others. Such people tend to display an air of superiority; this seemed to be the case with the Jews during the days of Jesus.

Adults: How open am I to welcoming or helping people who are different from me?

Children: How do I get along with others who are different from me or who speak a foreign language?

A Family Perspective: Even when spurned by Jesus, the faith of the Canaanite woman makes her bold enough to argue and ask again for what she needs. Her persistence and great confidence that Jesus could heal her daughter reminds us of the confidence with which our children bring to us their own needs. In their faith and trust we can find modern examples of how we might approach God in prayer.

As a family recall some times when a request for something was presented by one family member to another with confidence and persistence. If the request was denied, talk about why that was so. If the request was eventually granted, talk about what led to the change of heart. Then read together today's Gospel, Matthew 15:21-28. Was anyone surprised by Jesus' response to the Canaanite woman? Why or why not? What makes Jesus change his mind and heal the woman's daughter? When we pray, God wants us to be as confident in his mercy. Invite family members to identify the things that they most need from God. Pray these prayers of petition together as a family, confident that God will hear and answer your prayers.

PLEASE CONSIDER BECOMING AN USHER

The ministry of ushers is the oldest lay ministry in the Catholic Church. The ushers of today have descended from a long line of people of God who have gone before them. During the time of Christ, the Doorkeepers of the temple numbered in the hundreds and were the forerunners of todays ushers.

Today the ushers primary duties and responsibilities include greeting and welcoming parishioners as they enter the church, helping them to find seats, taking up the collection and wishing everyone a good day at the conclusion of the Eucharistic Celebration.

If you would like to be an active member of our Parish community, please consider joining our team of ushers. Contact Anthony Romano at 973-267-5433.

Typically our meetings are on the last Tuesday of every month, starting at the 12:05 Mass and continuing with lunch and a presentation afterward in Rauscher Hall. Special travel events, like the trip to Radio City for the Christmas Spectacular are planned separately.

Enjoy the rest of your summer and join us on September 26!

THE HISTORY OF THE PARISH

We Built a Family Together: The History of the Parish of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary by parishioners Robert and Jeanette Fredericks, with photographs by Sergio Burani. You can get a copy for a $25 donation to Assumption by visiting the parish website www.assumptionparish.org or stopping by the parish office during regular office hours. The History of the Parish is a great gift. This collector’s item can also be purchased at the Morristown and Township Library on Miller Road.

CATECHESIS OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is an

approach to the religious formation of children ages 3-12. Based on the educational principles of Dr. Maria Montessori, Sofia Cavalletti, a Hebrew and Scripture scholar and Gianna Gobbi, a Montessori-trained educator, developed this program which links Scripture with Liturgy. They began this work in 1954 and the study continues today throughout the world.

There are three levels of this program: Level I for the 3-6 year old child Level II for the 6 to 9 year old child

(including Sacramental Preparation) Level III for the 9-12 year old child. Each Level holds sessions in its own specially

prepared space called an “atrium”. The atrium is not a classroom, but resembles a small retreat center. In the ancient church, the atrium was where people would prepare to enter the church from the outside world. Within the sacred space of the atrium, Good Shepherd catechists prepare the environment and give selected presentations from Scripture and Liturgy that “call forth” the child’s response rather than “pour in” information. The child’s work in the atrium nurtures the deep bond between God and child and helps respond to the plea of the young child, “Help me to come closer to God by myself.”

The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is an option for children age 3 through 12 who might otherwise attend the traditional religious education program on Sunday mornings. Catechists who serve in the Good Shepherd Program must be certified by the National Association of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd.

Children enter the Good Shepherd program in Level I (ages 3-6). Registration is currently being accepted for new 3, 4, 5 year old and Kindergarten participants as well as children returning to CGS through sixth grade. Sessions are held on Sunday mornings and evenings, Tuesday afternoons, Thursday afternoons and Friday afternoons. Sessions begin the week of September 17, 2017!
