From Predicament to Living Hope – Part 1

I remember from my studies in philosophy in college, one of the

existentialist philosophers saying that to be human is to be in a predicament. There are several ways to understand this remark. It certainly includes the fact that human life is beset with problems. We all have problems and challenges that we face from day to day. There is no one who lives a problem free life. And it seems like no sooner have we resolved one problem than another one rushes in to take its place. We have problems with our homes: the roof leaks, the water heater broke, the next door neighbor’s kid hit a baseball through the window. We have problems with our jobs: we’re overworked and underpaid, the boss promoted someone else, the company is downsizing. We have problems with our relationships: our spouses don’t understand us, our in-laws are overbearing and too demanding; our children are rebellious. And so on. But it goes much deeper than all of that. The existentialist philosopher is also saying that the very nature of human existence involves being in a predicament. Our very survival from day to day or even from moment to moment is by no means guaranteed. The very real possibility of certain and eventual death looms over all of us at all times. And to a certain extent that is beyond our control. But to a great extent, what we do, and the choices we make have a direct impact on our survival. That is where the real predicament lies. We live with all these problems. And that is not to say that life is nothing but problems. Of course we know satisfaction and joy and happiness and love and success and fun and leisure and peace of mind. But no philosopher ever said that to be human is to be satisfied, or joyous or happy or successful or at peace. And I doubt anyone else would say so, either. To be human is to be in a huge predicament. That is because there is something fundamentally wrong with human existence. Something is “out of kilter”. ‘Out of kilter’ is a phrase I recall one of my professors using. Creation is tainted. Something is rotten in the State of Denmark. Human nature is warped, bent. We somehow know that things in life, in the world and in ourselves individually are not how they ought to be. For us in this world that is the ultimate nature of reality. To be continued . . .

FIRST SATURDAY PRO-LIFE ROSARY

presented by the Knights of Columbus

Come join us on Saturday, December 7, 2019

beginning at 4:00 p.m.

at Notre Dame Catholic Church Kerrville, Texas

This beautiful and inspiring program will take place on the First Saturday of each month, to pray for the end of abortion and the culture of death, attend Confession if desired, and satisfy the request of Our Lady of Fatima to honor Her Immaculate Heart and help bring about peace in the world.

We invite you to learn about and be a part of this special devotion.

Join us before the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe as we pray and sing for the world. Offer personal intentions to Our Lady for your children and families. The 5:00 p.m. Vigil Mass will follow.

Give in thanksgiving. “The nuns left lasting impressions on me,” writes a donor. “I shall always be grateful for my Catholics education.” Please join in thanking the thousands of senior Catholic sisters, brothers, and religious order priests who worked tirelessly to educate the young and serve those in need. Next week’s second collection is for the Retirement Fund for Religious, which helps hundreds of religious communities care for aging members. Please give generously.

Thank you for your generous support last week for the collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development! As a parish, we raised $1,388.29 to support those who live on the margins and in poverty in the United States. If you missed the collection, it’s not too late to give! Introducing the Mother Cabrini Center at Mount Sacred Heart Forming International Religious Sisters

for Catholic Schools

We are recreating the landscape of Catholic Education in San Antonio with a pioneering concept! The Catholic schools have experienced a decreased number of Religious Sisters in the school system. The new vision of the Mother Cabrini Center will start with bringing back

the Religious Sisters to the Classrooms. Educated Religious Sisters from other countries will participate in a focused formation program at MSH with the goal of supporting the Sisters in their transition as educators in American Catholic Schools. Renewing our schools with the presence of Religious Sisters will provide students with an excellent education with a global understanding and immersion into other cultures and viewpoints. Help lead the charge of change for a new model that includes a global community and enhanced education! Please join with us to achieve our goal. BooksToBorrow from the Notre Dame Parish Library are available in the narthex of the church, near the bell tower door. Genia Schuler reviewed a recent book from our new Pope. The Joy of the Gospel: Apostolic Exhortation of Pope Francis would be exciting reading even if it weren’t such a significant document, especially for ecumenical affairs. British Methodist church historian David Carter says, “Never before have I read a document from the Roman magisterium, either papal or conciliar, which has so illuminated my own particular tradition and contributed insights that need to be noted and assimilated by it today. ... One cannot speak more highly of a teaching document from another church. ...[This document] has been granted to us by the Holy Spirit in His working within our separated traditions, a grace given despite the serious sin of schism. ...[It is a document] which, in its core practical teaching on mission, pastoral ministry and social justice, could be and should be affirmed by the other major communions and their leaders and responsible synods.” We who are Catholic owe it to ourselves to get familiar with this document to speak to our Protestant neighbors and family members.

Please pray for those who have died, and have gone to their eternal rest with the Lord, especially for Graciela Límon. Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her. May she rest in peace.

TAKE2 SAN ANTONIO PILGRIMAGE You are invited to join Jerry Usher and Debbie Georgianni, Co-Hosts of Take2 with Jerry and Debbie, an EWTN Caller driven radio show*, on a pilgrimage to San Antonio, Texas.

The dates for this are December 6th, 7th and 8th, beginning the evening of Friday the 6th and concluding around noon on Sunday the 8th. Please come join us for all or part of this pilgrimage.

This is an informal pilgrimage, which means, among other things, that there is no cost to you to be a part of it beyond you own travel, lodging, parking, and meal expenses.

All venues on this pilgrimage are free to visit with the exception of a possible, optional, Riverboat cruise ride down the San Antonio River.

A Shrine, a Cathedral, and a Basilica, are all included in this Pilgrimage to a city over 300 years old, rich in Catholic heritage and history. San Antonio was named in honor of Saint Anthony of Padua.

Venues include the Alamo, San Fernando Cathedral, the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Little Flower, the Shrine of Saint Padre Pio, as well as the world famous San Antonio Riverwalk.

Many of the churches have 1st degree relics in them from multiple saints to include, Saint John Paul II, Saint Padre Pio, and Saint Therese of the Little Flower.

A group block of discounted hotel rooms for the Pilgrims to stay at is in the works.

For additional information please go to Jerry and Debbie’s website, www.jerryanddebbie.com , under the Pilgrimage section for additional details.
