Here’s one more reason to be a proud graduate of Mohawk College.

Your alma mater ranks number one among all colleges in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area.

Results from the latest province-wide Key Performance Indicator(KPI) student survey put Mohawk ahead of George Brown, Seneca, Sheridan, Humber and Centennial colleges on a host of quality and satisfaction measures.

Mohawk ranks first for quality of programs and quality of learning. First in quality of facilities and services. First for both overall student satisfaction and graduate satisfaction.

In short order, Mohawk’s KPI scores have gone from back of the pack to head of the class. Mohawk is a college on the move and our first place scores are a vote of confidence from students.

Our scores can be attributed in part to the investments we’re making to improve our facilities and enhance our services. The largest renewal project in Mohawk’s history is in full swing at our Fennell Campus and follows the $27 million transformation of our skilled trades campus in Stoney Creek.

To date, we’ve opened the Mohawk Learning Exchange at the Fennell campus, home to the new Harold Cummings Library and Collaboratory. We’ve turned our old library into the Square, a new one-stop shop for student services that makes it easier than ever for students to get the help they need to graduate to success. We’ve renovated the cafeteria and entire wings of our campus, including classrooms, labs and hallways. We’ve created new spaces and better places for students to get together before, between and after classes.

And there’s more to come. We’re working on plans for a new and much needed fitness and recreation centre to support our academic programs and meet the health and

wellness needs of our students, staff and alumni. We’re also looking to build a new multi-modal transportation hub and significantly upgrade our technology labs.

Beyond bricks and mortar, we owe our stellar KPI scores to the dedication of Mohawk faculty and staff who time and again go above and beyond for our students. From organizing interactive concerts in lower city elementary schools to coordinating a weeklong renovation project at a community centre to creating a competition where students develop technology solutions to real-world health challenges, our team gives students a wealth of one-of-a-kind, transformative experiences that help develop potential and launch careers. Mohawk’s KPI scores are the sum total of all these experiences and countless daily interactions. Not only is Mohawk earning high marks from students. We’re receiving incredible support for the ongoing renewal of our college from within our own ranks and from our community partners. The Mohawk Students’ Association has committed $1 million. The Mohawk College Association of Continuing Education Students is

contributing $250,000. The Mohawk Alumni Association is investing $100,000. Mohawk’s entire senior management team is personally supporting the renewal project as well. This support sends a powerful message to corporations, business owners and philanthropists who are looking to make a real difference in our community.

Every dollar makes a difference and keeps Mohawk moving forward. Every dollar strengthens our college, benefits our students and helps the next generation of future-ready graduates follow in your footsteps.

Well, this is it. This will be the last official article I write as Chair of the Alumni Association. I will be completing my term and moving into the Past Chair position for a two year term in September. I have enjoyed sharing my thoughts and views with all of you. Being Chair of the Alumni Associaiton has been interesting as I have had the opportunity to sit on both sides of the table, as Director and now as Chair and I must say that it has been a rewarding and fun experience.

Nerves and sweaty palms, hugs of friendship, voices filled with excitement and smiling faces. These behaviours are observed annually in June and October during convocation ceremonies.

Mohawk College Convocation is my favourite time of year! Students return to the college with family and friends to celebrate their hard work and accomplishments. They reconnect with classmates, faculty and staff as they prepare to don their gown, and bask in their moment of glory crossing the stage to receivetheirlierpipeandobtainofficial“graduate”status.

June 2011 saw over 3800 students receive their diploma, certificate or degree and become members of the Mohawk Alumni Association – what a reason to celebrate! These graduates will now participate in activities and events for alumni and connect with other graduates, networking and building relationships and their own career paths.

The Mohawk College Alumni Association family is constantly growing and the Alumni Association is working to respond to the changing needs of its members. The Mohawk College Alumni Association has a 12 member Alumni Advisory Council comprised of graduates from Mohawk College representing varying programs of study and backgrounds. At the Alumni Association’s Annual General Meeting on Septemer 13, 2011 three new members joined the Council as Directors. We would like to extend a warm welcome to our new Alumni Advisory Council members who will be serving a two year term starting September 2011.

Gary NelsonGary was born in England and his family immigrated to Canada when he was five years old. Gary grew up in Hamilton and attended Sir Allan Mac Nabb and Southmount Secondary Schools. After graduating grade 13 Gary attended Mohawk College where he enrolled in the three year Business Administration program and was on the Dean’s Honour Roll in both his second and third year.

After graduating from Mohawk College, Gary started his career with The National Trust Company in Toronto. Gary startedasaLoansTrainee;heworkedallaspectsoftheretail bank. In 1997, The National Trust Company was merged with The Bank of Nova Scotia (Scotiabank) and Gary continued to work for Scotiabank taking on more progressive like positions: Senior Personal Banking Officer, Financial Advisor, Manager Personal Banking and his current position Branch Manager-Caledonia.

Gary has been involved in various volunteer roles with a number of organizations including Norfolk General Hospital, The United Way of Haldimand Norfolk, Norfolk Relay for Life, Caledonia Chamber of Commerce and the Kinsmen and Rotary Clubs of Simcoe.

Michelle MillerMichelle graduated from the Recreation Leadership program at the Brantford Campus of Mohawk College in 1995. Over the next 14 years, she worked with and supported people with a wide variety of physical and developmental disabilities, from group homes to private homes. Her goal upon graduating was to work with seniors in retirement and nursing home settings, which she did happily and successfully for several years.

Beyond work, Michelle put her education and passion for organizing to full use by volunteering on community events, which lead to an invitation to join JCI Brantford. As a member of this organization for ten years, Michelle has served as President of the local Chapter and the regional board. Michelle has chaired or worked on most every project in the JCI Brantford roster, including the premier holiday season event and the annual JCI Brantford Santa Claus Parade.

Michelle has also been an active member on several community boards, from the Adult Recreation Therapy Centre, to Jaycees Non-Profit Housing. Michelle is now looking forward to serving on the Mohawk College Alumni Council.

Ernie VidovicErnie received his BA from the University of Waterloo in 1985, and graduated from the Electronics and Engineering Technology program at Mohawk College in 1990. He received his CET certification from OACETT in 1991. Ernie has a strong background in the Utility industry, Telecom, and Project Management, having obtained his Masters in Project Management from York University.

Ernie began his Career in 1989 at Hydro Mississauga and is a licensed Journeyman Electrical Operator in the Province of Ontario. He went on to become Construction and Implementation Manager of Enersource Telecom in 2002 where he was responsible for construction of the fibre optic backbone in Mississauga and the fibre connection of over 200 of the Peel Public and Separate schools.

In 2006, Ernie joined the team at FibreWired Burlington as the Project Manager and in 2008 became a Project Manager for North American Operations at GE Water and Power where he oversaw multi-million dollar projects in Arizona and the Southwestern United States. After a brief stop at Toronto Hydro and with 21 years utility experience, Ernie became Operations Manager of Norfolk Power.

Ernie’s communication skills, strong work ethic, project management skills and outgoing personality throughout his career have afforded him the opportunity to gain vast experience in the Utility Industry and achieve many successes, cost saving and cost containment initiatives.

Electronic Security is at the forefront of many business and corporation’s priorities these days. Video surveillance, digital imaging and paging systems are only a few ways to protect or enhance your property. However, with the ever-changing products available it can be difficult for the average person to keep up! To help make the process and integration simple and seamless Stokoe Communications was developed by Mohawk Graduate Dave Stokoe.

After graduating from Mohawk College’s Electronic Technician program Dave took a position with Cable 4 (currently Cable 14), a community cable station. During his time at Cable 4 he moved up to become the Program Director/ Operation Manager for the station. Next, his career path moved into the operation of an Industrial Video company. Having this wide range of skills and experiences Mr. Stokoe decided to develop and run his own company Stokoe Communications, which began in 2007.

Stokoe Communications offers turnkey solutions for any communications application, including but not limited to: cutting edge Digital CCTV, Structured Cabling, Process Monitoring, Perimeter Security, Access Control, Commercial Paging Systems, A/V and Presentation Products. Stokoe Communications provides their expertise to various sectors like, hospitals, child care centers, police, government, schools, colleges, universities, airports, corporations, small business and industrial manufacturing companies.

As the President and CEO of Stokoe Communications, Dave recognizes the importance of customer service.Dave said, “Having been in the industry of surveillance/security for years, I identified a need in the community and started Stokoe Communications to address these needs.” Priding themselves on innovative solutions and optimal customer service, “Stokoe Communications believes in total customer satisfaction. To achieve this, the company provides quality products and services with the highest level of technical expertise.” Dave emphasized that operating a business, “hastaughtmetotakethingsinstride,andtoalwaysstrivefor perfection. I have learned that happy customers are returncustomerssodoingitrightthefirsttimeisourgoal.”

Being an active part of the community is important to Dave which is why Stokoe Communications is a proud sponsor of Hamilton Crime Stoppers, the Mount Hamilton Minor

Soccer Association and the Chedoke Minor Hockey Association. Also, to ensure he and his staff are up to date on the latest advancements in the field the company is a member of the Canadian Security Association, CANASA. Dave said, “Over the years I have attended many trade and industry learning activities. I am firm believer in continuous education.”

For Dave, Mohawk College “gave me the foundation and the skills to succeed in business.” As for his life as a student, Dave spoke fondly of his time stating, “I spent a lot of time at the Arnie Centre but also enjoyed going to classes. As well, I enjoyed the atmosphere and campus life.” Dave went on to express that his instructors, “instilled the value of hard work and the knowledge I would need to succeed.” Also, within the business environment Dave said that he continually refers back to things he learned at Mohawk and that his education has been beneficial to him both personally and professionally. He added that students who are thinking of joining the Electronic Technician program should, “jump in with both feet and enjoy the journey.”

When asked what was in the future for Stokoe Communications, Dave said that the company is currently working closely with Mohawk College as they are installing a video matrix solution for Mohawk College Security which when complete, centralizes all video surveillance across all campuses to one location. Along with surveillance he was happy to announce that, “We provided Mohawk College with the Panasonic WJND400 – 64 Camera System – which was the first system of its kind in Canada!”

Pamela Gutter, ‘06Recreation & Leisure

In 2006, Pamela graduated from the Recreation and Leisure program at Mohawk College. Initially she worked for over a year with seniors as a

Lifestyle Enrichment Coordinator, providing programs to meet their social, emotional, spiritual and physical needs. Pamela then went on to work with various age and ethnic groups, but has found her passion working with at risk youth in the community. Pamela now works as a supervisor coordinating various activities to engage youth by offering a safe place and fun social activities in the evenings. Pam has been able to reach out to many youth who are hard to connect with and see them accomplish milestones in their lives.

Pamela gained valuable knowledge and experience while at Mohawk College in the Recreation and Leisure Program. This program teaches the importance of healthy lifestyles in communities and gives hands-on opportunities to learn. Pamela developed the skills to deal with diverse individuals and situations, as well as learning new approaches on leadership and communication. Pamela took the skills learned about planning different activities to the youth she works with in her full-time career. Pamela gained expertise and knowledge she brings to her profession every day, most importantly, teaching youth about opportunities in their lives including healthy living and that their voices are heard.

Nancy Hemrica, ‘79Nursing

Upon graduating from Mohawk College in 1979 as a registered nurse, Nancy began working at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, Texas. She returned

to Canada after almost a year and then began working at the Hamilton General Hospital in the ICU until 2003.

In 2003, Nancy took on the position of Organ and Tissue Donation Coordinator. Nancy initially was met with significant resistance to her role and to the practice of organ donation in general. However, Nancy worked tirelessly to educate people about the importance of organ & tissue donation, not only for the recipients whose lives could be saved, but also for the donor families. Nancy has opened many people’s eyes to the fact that organ donation always occurs within the context of a devastating loss, but that giving families the opportunity to fulfill the last wishes of their loved ones to donate their organs can provide solace in the midst of tragedy. Nancy also works with many community groups including the Rotary Club, Lions Club, and the Catholic Women’s League. Additionally, she voluntarily speaks with groups at local high schools in an attempt to broaden education and interest in organ donation. She has also been a guest speaker in Mohawk’s Continuing Education classes.

Michael Le Page, ‘84Business Marketing

President and Founder of Maple Ridge Community Management Ltd., Michael Le Page has served the condominium industry since

1984 with a customer service, leading edge approach.

Tried, tested, true and proven, Maple Ridge employs over 60 people and the team has collectively carved a place in the industry. Named the 2009 ACMO Corporate Member of the Year, Maple Ridge stands ever taller knowing their firm has been recognized for its efforts.

Graduating from Mohawk College’s Marketing program in 1984, this program provided Michael with a very sound base of business understanding. 25 years later, Michael would return to Mohawk as a student once again, to take courses to obtain the designation of Registered Condominium Manager. Now Michael teaches these same courses to his aspiring property managers.

Aside from building a successful business, Michael has coached for eight seasons in the Brampton Youth Hockey Association as well as serving as Vice-President of the league. For 14 years Michael volunteered on the Property Standards Committee for the City of Brampton. Michael has also been a speaker at Industry conferences and has published multiple articles in industry magazines.

Linda Rourke, ‘90Television and Communication Broadcasting

Since graduating from Mohawk’s Television and Communication Broadcasting course in

1990, Linda Rourke has enjoyed a successful career in both television and radio broadcasting. Currently Linda works at Cable 14 as the creator, producer and host of a daily half hour lifestyle magazine show called Hamilton Life.

With over 20 years experience in broadcasting, Linda has done everything including being a live morning show host in Vancouver for CTV, where she was part of the original team in a start up station. She has been the sports and weather anchor at Canada AM, as well as the sports feature reporter at TSN. She also worked on the W-Network’s Ty Pennington’s Inside the Box, which aired last fall. Linda has also been a teacher of television production and hosting for the Vancouver film school where she created and taught a program for film students in television broadcasting.

Additionally, Linda has completed an Interior Decorating diploma, has also owned and operated a small business and been the chair for the Business Improvement Association in Waterdown.

Pamela Feijo, ‘05Advanced Security Management

Graduating from both the Police Foundations Program in 2005 and Advanced Security Management in 2006 prepared Pamela Feijo for

her current position at Canada Border Services Agency.

In this position, Pamela works to facilitate the entry of visitors, students and temporary workers for purposes such as trade, commerce, tourism, international understanding and cultural, educational and scientific activities while protecting health and safety of Canadians and seeking to maintain the security of Canadian society.

While attending Mohawk, Pamela volunteered as both a peer tutor and a class rep. She also held many positions on campus, from Student Life Assistant, Public Safety and Security Studies Class Ambassador and Student Recruiting Officer.

Outside of Mohawk, Pamela has volunteered with Victim Services of Brantford and Brant County since 2003, first as a counsellor offering victims of crime short-term assistance during crisis and providing referrals for long-term care. Since 2009 she has been a supervisor at Victim Services providing support to the many volunteers.

Kelley Hoyt, ‘98Child and Youth Worker

Since graduating in 1998 from Mohawk’s Child and Youth Worker Program with Dean’s Honours, during which she received the Royal

Hamilton Light Infantry Scholarship in year 2, as well as the Bartimeaus Award in Year 3 for outstanding achievement in field placement, Kelley Hoyt has not stopped learning and achieving in her chosen career as a Child & Youth Worker.

In the mid-1990’s Kelley began her career working as a Residential Counsellor and Child & Youth Counsellor at Nova Vita Women’s Services in Brantford, where she provided crisis intervention and support to families. Then from 1999 to 2005, Kelley worked for the Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School Board where she was a Child and Youth Worker and eventually became the Head of the Department.

Since 2002, Kelley has worked at Mohawk College. Positions she’s held have included being the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program Coordinator (OYAP) for the Child and Youth Worker Program, a Professor and Field Placement Supervisor and her current position as the Academic Coordinator of the Child & Youth Worker Program in Brantford.

During this time Kelley studied through Distance Education at Athabasca University and graduated in 2008 with a degree in Human Services.

Nate Fehrman, ‘03Construction Engineering Technician

After graduating from McMaster University in 1999 with a Bachelor of Arts in History, Nate Fehrman enrolled at Mohawk and graduated

four years later from the Construction Engineering Technician and Architectural Technologist Programs. Nate is an accredited LEED Professional and is currently pursuing his Gold Seal Designation.

Since 2000, Nate has been the owner and operator of his own Property Management Business in London, Ontario, where he now manages four residential rental units, performs continuous renovations and upgrades and seeks to provide a high level of customer service to prospective and current clients.

For the last eight years, Nate has also been a Project Manager with McKay-Cocker Construction Ltd. and is in the process of becoming the Manager of the Design-Build Department. In his current role, Nate has managed many projects from pre-construction to completion. Some of his major project achievements include working on a 10 million dollar “Design-Build” Project for Goodwill Industries; a first of its kind project where his team built a round-a-bout over an active train line; was part of the management team for a 50 million dollar redevelopment and expansion of the border crossing facility in Sarnia; and was also part of the management team for the 20 million dollar Animal Care testing and laboratory facility built at the University of Western Ontario.

Shirley Marshall, ‘86Computer Systems Technology

Graduating from Mohawk’s Computer Systems Technology program in 1986, Shirley Marshall has continued to be a life-long learner, studying

at both Niagara College and McMaster University.

Since leaving Mohawk, Shirley has worked for many companies in various positions, mostly focusing in the IT field. She has worked for Agriculture Canada, The Paul Revere Life Insurance Company, St. Joseph’s Healthcare and is currently at Fig. P Software Inc., a company that designs and provides data-driven solutions for clinicians and scientific researchers.

In addition to being dedicated to work and schooling, Shirley has made the time to volunteer with many groups and associations, including the Peninsula Players Community Theatre, since 1986, where she has had various roles, including Actor, Producer and Stage Manager. Over the last ten years, she has also been involved with Binbrook Little Theatre, including her current role as the President of their Board of Directors.

Mohawk Nursing Alumni join to Celebrate the 100th Anniversary of St. Joseph’s School of Nursing.

On May 27th, 2011 St. Joseph’s School of Nursing celebrated the 100th anniversary of the first nursing school in Hamilton. It brought together nearly 500 former graduates, teachers and administrators.

Mohawk College partnered with St. Joseph’s beginning in 1973. The last class graduating from the St. Joseph’s Campus was in 1978. In 1979 the program moved entirely to the Mohawk Campus.

As part of the weekend long celebrations, the Mohawk Alumni office hosted a reception and afternoon tea for the St. Joseph’s/Mohawk graduates at the Sheraton where the events were being held. Classmates

from ‘74-’78, many of whom had not seen each other since graduation, gathered for a few hours of storytelling, picture sharing, reminiscing and renewing old friendships. This gathering drew friends from as far as Florida, Alabama and Windsor.

Class pictures were on display and new ones were taken to commemorate the event. Our Alumni staff team were there to make all of us feel welcome. It was a wonderful start to a weekend of special memories.

Florence Estates Winery was the home of our Simcoe Regional Alumni Event on Wednesday, May 11, 2011. The evening began with a welcome from our hosts Margaret and Terry Marshall and a tour of the winery. After the tour and questions, the group proceeded to the tasting bar and was introduced to the many flavours of Florence Estate wines coupled with delicious hot and cold hors d’ouevres.

The atmosphere was buzzing as alumni enjoyed the quaint and cozy lounge while networking and learning more

about fellow alumni who are right in their own backyard. Acquaintances reconnected and new relationships were formed.

A common functionality as a human being that has prospered from an individual, group, business or community, is to heed the inclination of contributing back to those who helped them succeed. In this story, we examine a group of people that have not only benefitted from their time spent at Mohawk College from an educational perspective, but also in their athletic contribution. The college is currently undergoing a facelift that’s unprecedented – and with the help of the subsequent individuals in this story, it comes as no surprise that the athletics department will soon be the beneficiary of a new state-of-the-art athletics facility, to be enjoyed by varsity athletes, intramural participants, academic programs and college staff alike (among the many other potential uses). As the college continues to expand, the help they’ve received from former students taking on mentorship roles in the athletic department has helped the school maintain its reputation, all the while helping the institution grow into the modern world of education.

Alex Paris, who graduated Mohawk in 1989, is not only the head coach of the men’s rugby program, but is also employed as the Fitness and Facilities Officer at the college.

Years after leaving Mohawk, Paris was contacted by the Athletic Coordinator at the time, Karen Lavell, and was asked if he wanted to help coach the newly formed rugby squad – a sport that wasn’t included in the department when he was a student. (Paris was a standout basketball player in his student tenure.) Soon after agreeing to the position, the alumnus found out he wasn’t just going to behelping;hewastobetheheadcoach.Sincethen,he’sgone on to win three provincial championships.

“Being able to be a part of the major championships at Mohawk has been a highlight of my career. But unfortunately, too often we gauge our success based on wins and losses. Our athletes are students first and foremost. After Mohawk College, they will only play club rugby – something that doesn’t pay the bills. So we try to offer the players much more than that.”

Paris, who has been involved with Mohawk in varying capacities for almost twenty years, stands steadfast in

his belief that coaching rugby is not just about winning games, but it’s about helping young men flourish as people as they prepare for ‘the real world’.

“After two or three years, (the players) have graduated. Seeing the students be successful in their lives beyond rugby is more gratifying than winning a championship. During their time as a player, I ask them to step back and critique themselves as an individual. They need to be able to figure out what they can bring to the table in their future occupations,” says Paris. “In rugby, you’re building trust; and utilizing that skill allows you to develop. It isn’t always measured on how well you do, but what you can learn from your mistakes. If you can apply that skill to your life and your job, then you become a better person. Self-evaluation, teamwork, and learning from your experiences is what we try to bestow into our players. They learn to develop personally, academically and athletically.”

It is not just about helping develop the student-athletes that motivates Paris, it’s the fact that he sees the blessings in coming back to Mohawk, as he remains an integral member in a growing community.

“It’s very easy to complain about what we don’t have in the athletic department. But I try to focus on what we do have – and that’s one of the most dedicated staffs in the OCAA. What I try to do is be positive, and we’re doing everything we have in our power to progress, and we utilize our staff to the best of our abilities.”

Paris says that coming back to Mohawk is one of the greatest decisions he’s ever made.

“I’ve been involved in the college in upwards of twenty years. The fact I’ve been there that long speaks volumes to my positive experience. I have the best job in the world, and I get to coach a sport I love dearly. The fact Mohawk has allowed me to do that is a highlight of my life; I’ve been an athlete, I’ve been a student, I’ve been a student leader and now I’m employed by Mohawk. It’s very rare to find that this day in age and I really am grateful.”

Echoing many of the sentiments of Alex Paris, women’s basketball assistant coach Kelly Dunham finds that by giving back to the student-athletes, she is helping them develop as individuals, not just as basketball players.

“Mohawk opened many doors for me, so if I can give something back I will. It’s not just about playing basketball, but it’s about learning life skills. It’s about the whole picture – it’s a privilege to be a student-athlete, and it’ll open many doors for them too. Because of the people that helped me, like Bernetta

Scime and Laurie Cahill among many others, I was able to achieve my success. They became my family, and I want these young ladies to have that same stability that I had because it will ultimately help them in the long run.”

Dunham, who has now coached at Mohawk for nearly ten years, initially pursued her post-secondary endeavors elsewhere prior to realizing that Mohawk was her calling.

“I have a deep connection with Mohawk – I was supposed to come here originally but I chose university, and after I had a few troubles, I came back to the College and that’s where I truly developed,” she says. “Here people know your name, you’re not just a number. And that’s what I love about this Mohawk community, and that’s what it gave to me.”

Initially, Dunham shied away from school involvement. However, she found that by getting involved with more than just school and playing on her varsity team, that she would acquire more in her experience than just basketball fundamentals and a diploma.

“My first semester I was hidden; Alex (Paris) was the SAC President and he grabbed me for the athletic committee. One thing led to another and then I myself ended up President. At first, I was there for school and to play ball, and then everything else opened up and it became so much more.”

After her time spent as a player at Mohawk, Dunham moved on and coached both at McMaster, and at the provincial and national levels. When she was approached by Laurie Cahill to coach the team, she jumped at the opportunity to give back to the school that helped her mature into who she is today.

“I grew as a person here both on and off the court, and the relationships that were built will last a lifetime. We have a great reputation for our student-athletes in the Hamilton community, and they now come into society with team working skills, problem solving, and conflict resolution.

They represent Mohawk everywhere they go, and they know they will have my support because this college is in

my blood – and it’s amazing for me as a mentor to be there for those young ladies.”

Brian Jonker, who graduated the Radio Broadcasting program in 1993, returned to Mohawk seven years ago after several years of coaching at the high school level. For him, the opportunity to give back to the school is exciting, and

motivates him to hopefully put a championship banner on the wall sooner rather than later.

“I played three years here, and I certainly have an affection for both the school and the program,” says the coach, who walked away from Mohawk with a diploma. “My roots definitely run deep within the college, especially since I met my wife who was playing on the women’s team at the time.”

Jonker appreciates the fact that his position as a mentor not only provides him the opportunity to develop a great basketball product, but to help these young men become leaders themselves.

“It really interested me to come back and build a championship calibre team. I want to win an OCAA championship – which Mohawk’s basketball program hasn’t done in forty years – and we’ve now developed into maybe one of the top three programs in the province,” says Jonker.

“There’s a great support system with Michelle (Ball) and Bernetta (Scime), and Laurie (Cahill) in the past – so the experience as a coach has been very positive. I have nothing but great things to say about what the school has done for me. So I hope that I’m returning something to the school with the kids I’m bringing in, and the values that I teach about not just basketball, but more so about life and how to be a better person.”

For some individuals, such as cross-country head coach Wayne Collins, taking on the coaching role was just as much beneficial to his own well-

being as it is to the athletes, as the Technology Professor chooses to train alongside of them.

“I started working at Mohawk in 1998 and I got into running a few years later, and I knew in past decades that they had a cross country team. So it was a good fit as I was looking to train myself. So when Laurie Cahill wanted to get it started again, I jumped at the opportunity,” he says. “I think getting involved in coaching is the smartest thing I’ve ever done. Students surround me all the time in the classroom, but it’s great to see them out of that element. Some of the athletes are so dedicated and motivated, so being able to work with them in the sport is amazing.”

“It’s not necessarily about being on the podium each year,” says the ’94 Computer Electronics grad. “It’s about watching the kids develop and getting to see them outside of a school environment.”

Collins says that it’s been a variety of small successes that have motivated him to give back, and he cites one instance with an athlete two years ago as a moment of triumph.

“In 2008 I had a student – her name is Marlin – and she didn’t even think that she would be able to make the team, and really lacked the required confidence. Well, we started training in the spring before the season and she was nowhere close to making the 25 minute, 5 kilometre team minimum. However, with a little encouragement and a lot of work, she not only was able to make the team, but she made nationals in Alberta. There, she ran 23 minutes – and it wasn’t a flat surface, it was running up and down the side of a mountain. To me, it’s moments like that that make this all worth while.”

Another athletic program that has emerged as one of Mohawk’s elite, is the men’s volleyball team, under the reign of yet another Mohawk graduate.

“It’s been fantastic,” says Matthew Schnarr, the head coach of the program. “The fact that I’ve been able to go step-by-step with the development of this school is an amazing feeling. I’m really fortunate to have been given the opportunity that I have to give back to the school.”

Schnarr, who graduated in 2007, had the opportunity to join his varsity coach James Bradley in an assistant position right after his final season as team captain.

“Basically I had a keen interest in coaching as well, and James asked ‘Would you be interested in coming on board?’ and I said ‘Absolutely, I’d be thrilled to do that’. The reason stemming from the fact that I was so involved in the team in captaincy and was keen to learn the coaching part of the game.”

But for Schnarr, the transition hasn’t always been smooth.

“I mean, for the first while, the guys always looked at me as one of them. But when (Bradley) stepped down in 2008 and asked me to take over the head coaching duties, I obviously jumped at the opportunity,” says Schnarr. “It took some adjustment for me to earn the respect from the guys in the position I was in – and a lot of that had to do with the fact that not only did I play with a lot of the guys still on the team, but they were some of my best friends. With that said, I knew I wanted to be a head coach and that we’d be able to grow as a team. Yeah, there was some butting of heads at first with some of our more skilled players, but we’re now heading in the direction of being one of the best college programs in the country. Our team has a lot of growth potential and we’re now attracting some great volleyball players, and I expect for us to compete at a national level.”

Schnarr says a big motivating factor in his return to coaching wasn’t just for his love of volleyball, but the pride he gets in representing Mohawk.

“I mean it’s been great. To be along for this ride is amazing and to have a hand in helping this school grow is a great feeling. I get to see it every day as not only a coach, but in working for the athletic department, and being involved in the SAC. You can’t necessarily tell the future but I’d love to be a part of this school for many years to come.”

For these former students-turned-coaches, giving back to the college by athletic instruction is not just about teaching systems and channelling their athlete’s abilities, moreover it’s about developing young adults into respected members of their communities, in addition to helping Mohawk College develop into a top-level post-secondary institution. Poet Khalil Gibran said, “You give but little when you give of your possessions. It is when you give of yourself that you truly give” – an adage that is certainly engrained in these teachers. Their philosophy of giving back through mentorship is something that would help any community blossom – but luckily, their community is Mohawk College.

Renewal of Mohawk’s largest campus continues with completion of major renovations that will make it easier for students to get the help they need to graduate to success.

The Square, Mohawk’s new centre for student services at the Fennell Campus, officially opened at 9 a.m. on Thursday, July 7. A team of 120 staff will provide a comprehensive range of services and supports, including financial aid, registration, recruitment, admissions, counseling, New Canadian and International advising, campus employment and accessible learning services. The Square will serve 7,000 full-time students at the Fennell Campus, Mohawk’s 42,000 continuing education registrants and support student services offered at the college’s other four campuses in Hamilton and Brantford.

The Square consolidates services that were previously offered at 17 locations across the Fennell Campus. Renovations to transform the former library into the new

home for one-stop student services began earlier this year and the $1.35 million project was completed on time, on budget and accident free.

The 17,000 square foot student services centre is part of the largest campus renewal project in Mohawk’s history and follows the official opening of the Mohawk Learning Exchange and the Harold Cummings Library and Collaboratory in January. In addition to renovating classrooms, hallways and the cafeteria, more common

areas have been created for students to collaborate before, between and after classes.

With the goal of further enhancing the quality of facilities and services, the ongoing Fennell Campus renewal project is earning high marks from students. Based on results from the Ontario government’s latest Key Performance Indicator survey, Mohawk ranks first among all colleges in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area for quality of learning, programs, facilities and services and finished first for overall student and graduate satisfaction.

new face at mohawkWe are pleased to announce that Wayne Joudrie joined Mohawk College as President of the Mohawk College Foundation, on April 4, 2011. Wayne has been hired on a part-time, two-year contract to review and assess the current capacity of the Foundation and the Development office of the College, provide recommendations regarding enhancements in structure, business processes and service delivery and lead their implementation.

Wayne was the highly regarded former Director of Education with the Halton District School Board. He brings over 30 years of experience in the educational sector, and has been a key contributor to numerous strategic initiatives in Ontario education. On a volunteer basis, he has been very active in the Burlington, Hamilton, Ancaster and Brantford communities where he is involved with a number of organizations. With the combination of skills and experience he holds, Wayne will bring valuable perspective and insight with respect to development and building of key partnerships.

We are very excited that we have been able to attract Wayne to Mohawk College and we look forward to his leadership in this key priority area for the College.

Mohawk’s Student Centre is Celebrating it’s 25th Anniversary

Two men who made major contributions to the Cross Country programme at Mohawk College, have been named to the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association Hall of Fame. Multiple champion Rodney Alderdice and highly successful coach Paul Stratford were inducted at the fifth OCAA Hall of Fame ceremony on Wednesday, May 4, at the Royal York Hotel in Toronto.

Rodney Alderdice’s Cross Country running career at Mohawk was filled with team and individual honours. Between 1990 and 1995 he dominated OCAA Cross Country collecting an incredible three individual OCAA Gold Medals as well as two Silver Medals. The Civil Engineering Technology graduate was named Male Freshman Athlete of the year in 1990-91, also kicking off an amazing run of four consecutive honours as the MVP of the Mountaineer squad. His team benefited greatly from his efforts, winning OCAA Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals during this time. In 1993-94, Alderdice was hailed as Mohawk’s Outstanding Male Athlete. He was inducted into the Mohawk Mountaineer Hall of Fame in 2006.

Paul Stratford’s athletic accomplishments began while he was a student at Mohawk as a member of the 1971 and 1972 OCAA Men’s Team Cross Country Champions. After graduation he continued his cross country career as coach from 1981 to 1989. During his coaching career, Stratford’s record included four OCAA Men’s team championships from 1983 to 1987, eight OCAA Women’s

team championships from 1982 to 1989, and five individual Men’s and Women’s champions. Stratford was not only an outstanding recruiter of cross country runners but also an avid supporter of the entire athletic program and was inducted as a builder in the Mountaineer Hall of Fame in 1999.

Mohawk’s Storoschuk and Gavey on All-Millennium Golf TeamTwo former Mohawk athletes have been named to the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association All-Millennium Golf Team.

Mohawk Hall of Famer Pat Gavey led the Mountaineers to an OCAA gold medal in 1991, while picking up an individual silver medal. He also captured a bronze medal two years earlier. Gavey played from 1989 to 1992.

Dave Storoschuk was a Mohawk golfer from 1977 to 1979. He led the Mountaineers to the OCAA championship in 1978, and won two straight individual silver medals.

Storoschuk and Gavey are two of only eight people named to the All-Millennium team and were honoured as part of the OCAA Hall of Fame Induction Class of 2011, May 4, at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel in Toronto.

Charles Faist | Mechanical Engineering Technology, 1969Since graduating, most of my career has been spent in heath care facility management at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital, Toronto East General Hospital and the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health in Toronto, including a period of consulting and work in the private industry. My last eight years have been spent in facility management at the Town of Oakville including assisting in setting up their facility asset management system and facility preventative maintenance system. Currently I reside in Burlington with my wife Dianne. We have five children and five grand children with another on the way.

Robert (Bob) A. Brown | Business Administration, 1972For the past 12 years I have been covering Canada as a key account manager/product specialist for SABIC Innovative Plastics (formerly General Electric Plastics). It’s a division of Saudi Basic Industries Corporation. Training new sales people is the most enjoyable part of the job. I have worked in chemicals and plastics since 1978. I was also a part-time business marketing instructor at Mohawk from 1977-1987. Currently I am living in north Burlington with my 22 year old son Michael, a recent engineering graduate of Queen’s University, and my 15 year old Jack Russell terrier Fozzie Bear. My spare time is spent running and training for road races, working out, spinning/bike riding, golfing, hanging out with my son, and taking my dog for walks on the Burlington waterfront trail. I’ve recently completed the 30K “AroundtheBay”andtheHamilton“Road-2-Hope”halfmarathon. I would love to catch up with any old classmates or friends from Mohawk (or Cathedral or HCI). Earl Shortt | Industrial Engineering Technician, 1976Since graduating in 1976, I have earned a Diploma in Microcomputer Management at Sheridan College, a B.A. at McMaster

University and a B.Ed. at the University of Alberta. I was also featured on Apple’s website (2001) for integrating technology into the curriculum.

David Folk | Architectural Technology, 1988I have been working with PCL since 1998 and have recently completed the new North Bay Regional Health Centre in 2010. I am very excited be working in my hometown again right next door to the College! The site is the St. Joseph’s Healthcare Redevelopment West 5th Campus Project.

Cheryl McMullan (nee Covre) | Nursing, 1990I retired from nursing in 2005 after 10 years as an ER/Pediatric trauma nurse. I’m now self-employed operating a skating school with my daughter and home renovations with my husband.

Brock A. McCracken (nee Hunchberger) | Chemical Engineering Technician, 1992I am the very proud father of 5-year-old twin girls, Abigail and Grace. Tracy Sherriff (nee Ormerod) | Early Childhood Education, 1994While most proud of being a wife and mother of three, I continue to be dedicated to the field of Early Childhood Education. I am currently working part-time as a Resource Teacher in local co-operative preschools and currently work as a part-time instructor in the Early Childhood Education program and the Resource Teacher program at Mohawk College. I am an active volunteer in the community acting as the founder and leader of the Parent Advocacy Learning Support Network, a group for parents and professionals of kids with learning disabilities. As well I currently participate on the Special Education Advisory Committee for the Hamilton Wentworth District School Board. I am excited to say I am nearing completion of a Bachelor of Professional Arts in Human Services Degree at Athabasca University.

Laura E. Wilson | Radiological Technology, 1994I am a breast cancer survivor and I’m happily married to Murray Detlor. We have four beautiful children between us.

Shawn Nash | Electronics Engineering Technology – Computers, 1995Spending a number of years in a technology related field, I pursued a childhood desire of becoming a police officer. Working as a front line officer for a few years in a traffic enforcement and general duties capacity, I came full circle and returned to technology where I worked as a Computer Forensics Investigator for major crimes and crimes against children. I have now spent the last two years as a Detective Sergeant responsible for the technology infrastructure in the Computer Forensics environment. I finally retired from the Canadian Forces Reserve after 20 years to concentrate on my career and continued education working towards a BA.

I have arranged and visited with engineering clients and companies in order to meet the specifications for minor and major projects for gas plants or oil sands projects. I have also developed a database of qualified leads through referrals, telephone canvassing, face to face cold calling on business owners, direct mail, email and networking.

am still without employment for what I completed college for but I am not giving up yet, I do however have a full time job with Rogers wireless at the moment and they offer a lot of benefits for their employees and a lot of sweet prizes – I just recently won a flat screen TV! Sometimes in life we meet a person that just changes everything, whether it be a spouse, a family member, a colleague, or a friend. For Mike Malone, a former Mohawk College music professor and jazz musician, that person was Dave McMurdo.

“He was my best friend – I’ve known him for 40 years,” said Malone.

Dave was an important part of Mike’s life. McMurdo hired him to play in his band that he was a part of for 22 years, and recommended him for a music teaching position at Mohawk College. They even decided to retire together on June 30th, 2011. Malone said he remembers signing retirement papers together the Friday before McMurdo passed.

On June 13th, 2011, Dave McMurdo died suddenly in his home in Eden Mills, and the jazz world lost a legend. Students lost a mentor, friends lost a confidante, and a family lost a father, grandfather, and husband.

Much has been written about McMurdo’s professional accomplishments as an internationally renowned jazz musician and always characterized him as kind, witty and passionate.

“Dave was passionate about everything he got into. He gave everything 100 per cent. If it was cooking; he was the best chef - there really was no holding back in whatever he put his mind to,” said Malone.

an insult. Malone laughingly told the story about a long distance romance:

“After three years of a long distance relationship I was in, Dave and I were driving and he very seriously turned to me and said, ‘You should marry that girl, she makes a human being outta you,’ and that’s just Dave, that’s how he was; always a great friend, giving good advice and punching you in the gut at the same time,” said Malone.

And the good advice wasn’t just reserved for close friends. According to Malone, McMurdo’s genuine care for the well-being of his students continued long after convocation.

“One student I was talking to said that a number of years after graduation she wasn’t getting much work. She told me she was on the verge of throwing in the towel… and then she got a call from Dave and that phone call was what kept her going with music,” said Malone.

This warmth was not unusual with Mr. Dave McMurdo. Malone said this type of connection existed with so many of the students McMurdo taught and mentored.

“His care for them carried on for as long as he was alive,” added Malone.

His penchant for education is not something McMurdo was shy about sharing. You can’t find an article on him without a mention of his teaching career and a lively quote displaying his zest. In the last interview before his death published by the Hamilton Spectator, McMurdo excitedly proclaimed that he loved teaching. He then added that he could go on

teaching until “wheeled down the lane in a wheelbarrow.”

Malone provided some ideas and insight into why Dave McMurdo may have felt so empassioned to teach.

“It’s such an integral part of being a musician. There is this long inheritance that comes from all of the musicians that went before us – so when we play – it’s not just us playing. It’s all of those people that we listened to when we were growing up and influenced how we play and how we feel when we play and that just gets passed on to the next generation,” said Malone.

For musicians, it seems that teaching provides an opportunity to be a part of that chain that goes back hundreds and hundreds of years.

“To have the opportunity to see students get the spark – light the match that gets them off exploring is something special and I know that he (McMurdo) felt that way,” he added.

Mike Malone shared many things with Dave McMurdo as a fellowteacherandafellowmusician;includingthecreative

procesess it takes to put together a song. Malone said that even though the band was named The Dave McMurdo Jazz Orchestra, McMurdo allowed everyone a chance to create.

“He always encouraged everyone in the band to write music, it wasn’t all about him,” said Malone.

People often forget that when the last curtain falls, we are not

our professions.

We are not often remembered for what we are, but for how we are.

“Dave was very encouraging, in fact, I think he believed in me more than I believed in myself. Over this past while, I’ve said that to a number of people and they have agreed that that’s exactly how they feel,” said Malone.

In memory of Dave and his contributions, The Mohawk College Dave McMurdo Memorial Award was created.
