Dear Parents and Guardians, What is cyber bullying? Cyber bullying includes teasing, spreading online rumours or sending unwanted or threatening messages or defamatory material using a range of technologies. Children using the internet can be cyber bullied or harassed through internet services like email, chat rooms, instant messaging, social networks or through websites. Bullying through mobile phone technologies such as text messaging is also considered cyber bullying. Whilst cyber bullying can have a damaging effect on children and young people, parents can encourage them to take control of the situation. This may be done by: advising children not to reply to any messages from a bully. Often if bullies don’t

receive a response they will give up learning how to block a bully, so they can’t make contact keeping a record of the harassing messages and any replies which may help parents,

or the authorities, if necessary, to find out who is sending them keeping usernames and passwords secret. If someone misuses a username and

password to post damaging information about a child it can be difficult to remove children recognising that if messages are threatening, a parent or guardian should be

told immediately. Cyber bullying, if threatening, is illegal and can be reported to the police

contacting the website administrator (often known as the webmaster) to ask for content to be removed, if bullying information has been posted on that website

Parents can help protect their children by: checking the privacy settings for your internet services visiting the Cyber smart websites for information - www.cybersmart.gov.au and

www.bullyingnoway.com.au/ talking to the child’s school if cyber bullying is happening at school reporting threatening messages to the police contacting the Cyber safety Contact Centre on 1800 880 176 for advice. Family Activity How Cyber smart are you? Join Sam and complete the Kids Quiz on www.cybersmart.gov.au and learn how to be safe on line. Have fun! The information above was directly taken from the cyber smart website and I hope you found this article helpful. Warm Regards, Lucy Vorpasso

Introducing… Dear Parents and Guardians,

Monmia is a Bucket Filling School! We fill buckets and we don’t dip!

We use our lid to keep our bucket full and keep the drops in! I love how the Bucket Fillers Philosophy has been embraced by our school community this year. I know that we can keep filling other people’s buckets and make Monmia Primary School a warm, positive and caring place to be. When we all fill other people’s buckets then all community members benefit from these acts of kindness. There is so much to acknowledge at Monmia Primary School! Here are some ‘drops’ for you to read.

Remember that when you fill someone else’s bucket, you fill yours as well so keep filling buckets Monmia! Happy Bucket Filling!

Kind Regards,

Lucy Vorpasso
