Beginning in October, theMontgomery Evangelical FreeChurch will open the doors to itsnewly established food kitchenknown as the Abundant HarvestCommunity Kitchen, which hasbeen an idea in the making forthe last several years.

The Abundant Harvest Com-munity Kitchen is a new min-istry of the MEFC to offer a freehot meal and Christian fellow-ship to any and all people frominside and outside the communi-ty, said Donald Sears, member ofthe MEFC.

It all started four years agowhen we started doing a men'sbreakfast once a month, he said.Initially, it was just guys fromthe church, but then we started tobranch out to other churches andpeople from the community, par-ticularly Pike Run because it'sright near us.

This is the fourth successfulevent MEMS has held for theUMCPP, a partnership that beganlast year, said John Connacher, president of MEMS.

When we decided to hold acommunity blood drive at thesquad building, we decided onsponsoring UMCPP for severalreasons, he said. Roughly 60percent to 70 percent of our pa-tients are transported to UMCPP,so that hospital seemed to be thelogical choice to work with. Also,UMCPP has told us all blood col-

was successful throughout theyears, drawing between 20 and 40

men each month, the church real-ized it wasnt targeting all peoplein need, Sears said.

Over the years, as the econo-my has been struggling, I've beenfeeling more impressed by theneed to start to feed people and

families who have good jobs, butthey just can't make ends meet,he said.

Its still a struggle for a lot offamilies, so we started to explorethe idea of expanding our mensbreakfast to a meal program for

    families.After distinguishing a need,

members from the MEFCreached out to township officials, including Township Administra-tor Donato Nieman, and Commu-nity Resource Manager DeniseCrowley, who both helped thechurch begin its initiative.

The pastor and I met withthem in May, and they were veryexcited with our idea to startsome sort of meal program,Sears said. They suggested wedo it on the weekends becausethey provide a meal for seniorsduring the week at the senior

center. That fit in with ourthought, which is how we figuredto serve lunch on Saturdays.

After designating a day whenthe MEFC will offer the meals,Sears did extensive research onsurrounding soup kitchens, in-cluding the Cornerstone Commu-nity Kitchen, which is run by thePrinceton United MethodistChurch. There, he obtained vitaladvice on how to run a foodkitchen.

I dropped in once to see how itworked and met with the guywho started it and oversees it,Sears said. He was very helpfuland had good suggestions aboutwhat to do and what not to do.They're the ones who said to us,'don't do once a month. If you'regoing to do it, do it once a week.People aren't just hungry once amonth, they're hungry everyweek.' So, we said let's go for itand do it once a week.

Sears and his wife also re-

searched what other local foodkitchens in the area offered be-cause they didnt want to dupli-cate anything. They found thatthere were a lot of facilities northof Montgomery near NewBrunswick and Somerville butrealized a huge gap around theirlocal area.

Right around where ourchurch is, theres nothing avail-able, and we saw it as God direct-ing us to start something andopen our doors for people to get a

good meal, he said. This whole experience has

been a good eye opener for peoplein the churches. Montgomery is anice area, but there's still a fairamount of need, and you'd never

know it by just driving around. With help from Crowley, the

MEFC is working with the Mont-gomery Food Pantry, as well aslocal businesses, farmers and in-dividuals to obtain food for theweekly meals.

The Montgomery FoodPantry is going to provide uswith food for our kick-off meal,Sears said.

Theyre also doing good pub-licity for us to the seniors andclients who use the pantry.Hopefully, we will create a net-work of food suppliers so that wecan tap into the Food Pantry once

a month for a meal, then go some-where else for next week, etc. Ourvision is to have enough food sup-pliers so that it's a once a monthobligation.

Sears is also reaching out tolocal farms for donations, whichis something they learned whileobserving the Cornerstone Com-munity Kitchen at PUMC.

They get their food fromTASK (Trenton Area SoupKitchen), Sears said. Theyreach out to local farms to getsome side dishes, and the maindish comes from TASK. We planto do the same thing.

People from the church arealso going to help the effort by do-nating homemade baked goodsand other dishes, Sears said.

This is a step of faith; weprayed about it a lot and now it'stime to do something more than

just the men's breakfast, he said. The congregation is super ex-

cited; we're all excited to start

this 70 people have alreadysigned up to volunteer fromchurch.

Its open to everyone in thecommunity. We don't care if theybelieve or not or what religionthey are, we just want them tocome, Sears said.

The Abundant Harvest Com-munity Kitchen will open on Sat-urday, Oct. 5 at MEFC, which islocated at 246 Belle Mead-Grig-gstown Road.

A free hot meal and Christian

fellowship will be served everySaturday from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Little by little, the effects of

    health-care reform, or Oba-

    macare as its commonly

known, are starting to come to light.

Change in price and type of health in-

surance, and the availability of public

health insurance, will take shape in

the coming months. In July, the Obama administration

made a change to one aspect of health-

care reform that they said would help

make them a friend to American busi-

    ness: They delayed the employer

mandate provision by one year, to

    2015.

    The provision has been controver-

sial since it was announced, because it

requires businesses with 50 or more

    full-time employees to provide health

    insurance.

    The Obama administration pro-

claimed that the delay would give busi-nesses relief they needed as they are

still attempting to get back up to full

    speed.

But will it work? We doubt it will.

    Take a look at Middletown, N.J., a

    Monmouth-County township of ap-

proximately 66,552 residents as of the

2010 Census. Just last week, the town-

ship cut hours for part-time employees

to avoid having to offer them health in-

surance. The move saves the township

    an estimated $775,000 per year.

Its a great move for the township,

but not so great for the employees,

who now get fewer hours and no

    health insurance through their em-

ployer and possibly also the resi-

dents, who now may have to face a cut

    in services.

    Middletown made the move now,

even though the employer mandatewas pushed back to 2015.

    Similar cost-saving tactics could be

used in our town, and the question

would be: How would that affect our

    services, and possibly our neighbors

    own wallets?

That is unknown as of yet, but its a

reality we may have to face not only on

the public employment level, but also

on the private employment level, as

    businesses make similar cost-cutting

    measures.

It just makes no sense to us.

Not really friendly to businessDelay of Obamacares employer mandate provision delays the inevitable

    Your thoughts

What are your thoughts on theemployer mandate provision of theObama administrations health-carereform? Tell everyone what you thinkthrough a letter to the editor.

Committee announces two local farms to be preservedThe Township Committee recently an-

nounced that two local farms will be pre-

served this year utilizing a combination ofstate, county and municipal funds. The Pariso family farm on Skillman and

Fairview Roads will be preserved by sum-mers end, of which 60 percent is beingfunded by the state with the remainderbeing split between the county and town-ship. In the historic Bridgepoint neighbor-hood, the 35-acre Howard farm will be pre-served by the state and county. In a deal ad-vocated by Montgomery and D&R Green-way Land Trust, the county has agreed topreserve the Howard farm and cover thefunds that Montgomery would normally

    provide.The township appreciates our continu-

ing partnership with the county's openspace team and thank them for their leader-ship. A fall or early winter 2014 closing isanticipated.

Things are really taking shape at Skill-man Park where Somerset County contin-

ues work by removing concrete, utilitypoles, and dead trees and brush. Engineer-ing and permitting of a 2.5-mile trail thatwill loop around the site is underway andthe county is planning for construction in2014. An estimated nine acres of existingasphalt is slated for removal. Much of thisasphalt are the old roadways that wont beutilized as part of the new trail. One park-ing lot across from Village ElementarySchool has already been refurbished, andtwo additional parking lots off of MainBoulevard are planned. Once completed,Skillman Park is going to be a true gem for

    our community.Montgomerys commitment to preserva-

tion has spanned almost 30 years, resultingin more than 35 percent of the townshipbeing protected. To help achieve our futuregoals, the township was recently awarded

$325,000 in new Green Acres funding andreceived $500,000 in additional farmland

preservation funds to use toward acquisi-tions. Staff are currently working withlandowners and funding partners to estab-lish fair market values for the top priorityproperties, and to move ahead with negoti-ations.

The Open Space Committee is alwayslooking for more volunteers to support ouropen space program through trail building, invasive species removal, tree plantingprojects and other stewardship activities. The township and Montgomery Friends ofOpen Space are currently building trails onthe townships newest preserve on Grand-

view Road.Check the Community Calendar on the

township website for updates, or email Lau-ren Wasilauski, open space coordinator, [email protected] to beadded to the volunteer mailing list.

Law enforcement officers fromthe Montgomery Township PoliceDepartment will be crackingdown on drunk drivers as part ofthe 2013 Labor Day Drive Soberor Get Pulled Over campaign.Running through Sept. 2, localand state law enforcement offi-cers will conduct sobriety check-points and roving patrols, lookingfor motorists who may be drivingwhile intoxicated.

    Drive Sober or Get Pulled

Over is a national campaign de-signed to raise awareness aboutthe dangers of drinking and driv-ing through high-visibility en-forcement and public educationtools, including posters, bannersand mobile video display signs.Launched across the U.S. in 1999,the program works to combatdrunk driving during some of thebusiest travel times of the year, including the Labor Day holidayperiod.

    Recent surveys indicate that

many people harbor the danger-ous belief that after a few drinkstheyre still safe to drive, saidGary Poedubicky, acting directorof the Division of Highway Traf-fic Safety. Even one drink canimpair your judgment and reac-tion time, putting not only your-self, but everyone on the road, indanger.

In 2012, alcohol-impaired fatali-ties accounted for 19 percent ofNew Jerseys motor vehicle fatali-

ties. As part of the initiative, theDivision of Highway Traffic Safe-ty provides grants to local law en-forcement agencies throughoutthe state to run the two-week cam-

    paign.Law enforcement agencies par-

ticipating in the Drive Sober orGet Pulled Over 2013 crackdownoffer the following advice if youplan to drink, designate a driver, someone who will not drink alco-hol, before going out; take masstransit, a taxi or ask a soberfriend to drive you home; spendthe night where the activity is

held; report impaired drivers tolaw enforcement (drivers maydial No. 77 to report a drunk oraggressive driver); always buckleup, every ride, regardless of yourseating position in the vehicle;and, if youre intoxicated andtraveling on foot, the safest way toget home is to take a cab or have asober friend or family memberdrive you to your doorstep.
