Moorland Road Pitch - This n That

In my life I believe that whatever you see every day, wherever you go, has a story behind it and in my film, I intend to show this quality of life in a small craft shop on Moorland

Road, called This ‘n’ That. Now they may not be your typical Clinton’s or Moonpig, where you don’t know what kind of customer service your going to receive, however, This ‘n’

That has friendly and welcoming staff, great products on the shelves and alongside that, locals who shop there with great stories unveiling the history behind the shop.

Ultimately, I want the audience to be able to gain an understanding of the importance of one little shop in a small community and how the people who own it, work there, and

shop there hold great stories which give This ‘n’ That its character. And yes, I understand that to people who live outside of Moorland Road and possibly some of you, that it’s just an old craft shop, but for its locals and the whole community, it represents a important

part of their history which they don’t want to let go.

Manifesto…

Moorland Road Pitch - This n That

This n That is a small card business on Moorland Road and is owned by Judith and Dave Pye. They have kindly given me permission to film in their shop if my idea is given the go ahead. If you were to ever visit This

n That you would relate it to more common card shops like Clintons or Birthdays and the online store Moonpig, however the shop has a more community feel about it due to the locals who use it and the people

who work there.

The concept for my documentary is to film the card shop, This 'n' That and the people who own it, work there and use it. I want the audience and myself to understand why they have chosen to place their business on Moorland Road and how they afford to keep business going considering that they are situated within a small community and are not a generic card shop like Clintons or

Birthdays. I also want to find out how the community feel about the shop and whether they enjoy it and use it a lot, as this will give a greater understanding of the business itself and the

people who work there. It would also be a good idea to gain a historic background on the shop, maybe delving further into what purpose it brought and still does to Moorland Road. I want to mainly capture a good days trade from morning through till evening as I think it will help keep

the documentary interesting and the audience engaged.

Moorland Road Pitch - This n ThatMy inspiration comes from a variety of videos which explore the theme of community and

towns, for example the short film Tallin: Old Town, Modern World (https://vimeo.com/53226676) I found on Vimeo, explores how a very old town which has existed for ages is adapting to the modern world. I would like to use this idea of adaptation in my documentary of Moorland, as it

is a small street that has been around for ages and over the years has started to adapt to modern society by the change of its shops and locals.

Similarly, I found a video https://vimeo.com/54751108 which emphasises the change from old traditions to modern society. Moorland Road is a very old street and was majorly affected during the war due to other streets nearby being bombed. It reveals that Moorland Road has possibly many stories to tell and that the local community will be the ones to tell me what they are. This

kind of information helps to keep an audience engaged, as I have found most documentaries contain history in some form to give a background picture of what something was like before nowadays. However, it would also be good to gain a perspective of what state the locals think the street will be in, in about 10 years time as we can see now that big cooperates are setting down their businesses within Moorland Road, for example, Sainsbury’s Local and how This ‘n’

That is a non generic card shop like Clintons.

The documentary will mainly consist of interviews and vox pops to get a better perspective of the community and the people who work in the shop and the locals historic knowledge of it. I want to try and avoid using a voiceover as much as possible as I think the people of Moorland

Road should be the ones who tell the story and I feel that the audience would engage more with the documentary if they saw that the information being stated was actually coming from the

locals. There will be quite a few over the shoulder shots and mid shots to show what the people are doing whilst their working at the shop and the types of people within the community. Yet I

will also be using the 5 shot rule in which to help establish the shops purpose on Moorland Road and a days trade for them. I am hoping for the filming to only take 14 days and in this time I should have all interviews, vox pops and location shots completed so that I am able to put a

rough edit together for peer assessment.

Moorland Road Pitch - This n ThatMy resources will include a Sony DV camera, boom mic and tripod to stabilise shots. Depending on whether I am filming outside, I may need some signs to warn the public that I am filming and will need permission sheets in order to have access to the shop, Moorland Road and the locals

for any interviews and vox pops. This is to assure them that I am not abusing any form of filming and respect their community by asking permission to film there, and I will fully respect their

decision if they don't want us to film certain areas or people of Moorland Road and also, I shall inform the local council and police to ensure that they are fully aware of my filming and incase

any locals phone up with any concerns.

Moorland Road Pitch - This n ThatTechnical Issues Action Who?

Street noises (public and cars passing by)

Leave warning signs outside the store to warn public so that they are aware

Sound Operator

Public in the store making noises by walking about

Try to film when it is quiet Sound Operator

There are lots of windows which let in a large amount of lighting which could cause over exposure on shots

Try to film with the light behind the camera in order to prevent this

Camera Operator

There are very bright lights in the store which cannot be dimmed for

subtlety

Try to film when there isn’t alot of daylight so that there isn’t an overload on exposure

Camera Operator

Anywhere where wires may be exposed and need to be plugged in -

can be a tripping hazard for public and crew

Try to hide wires away or cover them with tape to keep them down and have a warning sign nearby to warn public

Camera Operator

Leaving our equipment in a safe place to prevent falling over it

Equipment should be kept out of the way of the public and again, a sign should be clearly signed to warn them of this

Camera Operator

Permissions - the person/people who overlook the store

Send them an e-mail via the university system and save their reply as evidence in case anyone questions

Director

The police would need notification of filming just incase public ring with

any concerns

Give the police notification of filming in the area so that they don’t think anything suspicious is happening and so they can

reassure public

The documentary will target an audience varying from students all the way through to elderly people who want to know more about the business on Moorland Road, the type of people

within the community and its historic background. The documentary should be informative and interesting as it has to attract a fairly big age range, yet it should also have an emotional

engagement with viewers who are possibly from Moorland Road or have a street like it that they know of.

Moorland Road Pitch - This n That

I'm hoping that this documentary will particularly touch the people who live on Moorland Road, or use to live/work there and I am keen to show the locals and This 'n' That in a bright light,

showing how they're all a friendly and caring community who care about their Moorland Road and keeping it alive as long as they can.
