Hello to all Members and Co-Workers,

I hope everyone had a great July and is staying safe. It has been a very hot and hectic month trying to get back into the swing of things. We are in the planning stages of many

projects and will keep you informed as they approach.

Tina Moss (Activities/Sports Chairman) is planning her Annual Crab Feast for October 17, 2020 from 5 to 7 PM. Tickets are $ 30.00 per person. Please contact her as soon as possible

if you are interested in tickets, as they are limited. (804) 529-7984. You do not want to miss out - - this is always a fun event!!

A 6 Hour WOTM Training Session will be held at the Lodge on September 12th from 9 am to 4

pm. Registration is $ 10.00 and lunch is $ 7.00. Please sign up with Jackie Francis if you are interested in attending. (804) 529-7349 or [email protected] Congratulations to Faye Hall on being chosen Co-Worker of the Month for August. All of

Faye’s hard work is greatly appreciated! While everyone is busy with their own lives, we do not always know what is going on with

other members. If you know of anyone who is ill or hospitalized, please let our Junior Regent Martie Allman know so she can inform the membership and keep them in our

thoughts and prayers. Martie can be reached at (703) 919-6339. As always, the WOTM meet the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month and would love to have you attend our meetings. The comradery is a lot of fun and you never know what the Committee Chairmen may be planning. Hope to see you there!

Secretary Joe Eller

Assistant Sec. Keith Williams

Don’t know if you’ve heard, but the Legion is now offering 10% off entry to all Legionnaires for all Legion events. Just show your cards for savings. The Legion has also waived the $10 initiation fee for new members. Starting in August Legion meetings will include a $2 hot dog dinner special and “Moose Milk” for $5 from 6 to 8pm. The next Legion meeting will be August 26.

Callao Lodge was third in the country for top association as a lodge. The Lodge goal this year is to be number one. To reach our goal we must increase our Legion membership.

Jimmy Buffet Night is still planned for August 15th. Ron Moody and the Centaurs have been booked. It will be $20/person ($18 for Legion members). Cheeseburgers in paradise and Island fries included. Food 4 – 6pm. Music 7 – 11pm.

New gutters have been installed on the back of the pavilion to help with erosion. The plan is to install more gravel at the back of the pavilion.

I would like to thank everyone who came out and purchased Legion dinners last month. I would also like to thank all the volunteers: Faye, Teeny Man, Glenn, Judy, Kathy, Howie, Marty, Randy, Alice, Joe, Keith, Sarah, Chet. Look at calendar for upcoming Legion dinners.

Also, Thanks to Craig, Wes, Mark, Timmy, Mike and Danny for help with the new sign and electric upgrades in the Lodge. If I’ve missed someone, my apologies.

We need more volunteers for dinners and events! If you can help, please leave your contact information with a bartender or talk with a Legion member.

Thanks, Charlie Elgin 571-271-6182

Last week, we took some friends out to a new restaurant, and noticed that the waiter who took our order carried a spoon in his shirt pocket. It seemed a little strange. When the busboy brought our water and utensils, I noticed he also had a spoon in his shirt pocket. Then I looked around and saw that all the staff had spoons in their pockets. When the waiter came back to serve our soup I asked, "Why the spoon?" "Well," he explained, "the restaurant's owners hired Andersen Consulting to revamp all our processes. After several months of analysis, they concluded that the spoon was the most frequently dropped utensil. It represents a drop frequency of approximately 3 spoons per table per hour. If our personnel are better prepared, we can reduce the number of trips back to the kitchen and save 15 man-hours per shift." As luck would have it, I dropped my spoon and he was able to replace it with his spare. "I'll get another spoon next time I go to the kitchen instead of making an extra trip to get it right now." I was impressed. Then I also noticed that there was a string hanging out of the waiter's fly. Looking around, I noticed that all the male waiters had the same string hanging from their flies. So, before he walked off, I asked the waiter, "Excuse me, but can you tell me why you have that string right there?" "Oh, certainly!" Then he lowered his voice. "Not everyone is so observant. That consulting firm I mentioned also found out that we can save time in the restroom. By tying this string to the tip of 'you know what', we can pull it out without touching it and eliminate the need to wash our hands, Shortening the time spent in the restroom by 76.39 percent." "After you get it out, how do you put it back?" "Well," he whispered, "I don't know what my colleagues do, but I use the spoon."

Should we send our kids back to school this fall? It’s a question that’s on every parent’s

mind, regardless of which schools are re-opening. The big issue is one of children’s safety

and COVID-19. But this poses many smaller questions to consider. How will the health of

students and teachers be monitored? Are schools well ventilated and capable of proper

sanitizing? Are school nurses prepared? How will they rearrange classrooms? Will masks be

provided for students and teachers? What about some sort three-days-off, three-days-on

hybrid of remote and in-person learning? Are buses and drivers ready for social distancing?

Will schools help students who don’t have access to strong internet meet the requirements for

remote learning?

There are no easy answers to any of these questions. The variables are too numerous; so are

the unknowns. Yes, school districts across the country are working hard to create reopening

plans and contingency plans should they not be able to. But, as we’ve learned over the past

six months, COVID doesn’t really care about plans.

The Tommy Moose® program aids in helping children overcome fears and anxiety during times of stress. Donated to Law Enforcement, Fire, and other Emergency workers, Tommy Moose plush dolls are presented to children in various traumatic situations. In addition to this service, the Tommy Moose character has grown to personify happiness, safety, and security through personal appearances, books, and on children's goods.

Tommy originated as a Moose community service project in Connecticut and soon spread throughout the US and Canada.

Since 2002, over 100,000 Tommy Moose plush dolls have been donated to shelters, hospitals, and emergency workers, who in turn deliver them to children in need of some comfort when facing some of life’s biggest challenges.
