On November 30, 2012, a section of Southern Boulevard and
Westchester Avenue in the Bronx, New York was named in honor of the 65th Infantry Regiment. At the ceremony, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. said “Their gallantry in battle and standard of conduct in overcoming adversity, has earned the ‘Borinqueneers’ our lifelong respect and I am proud to stand with the community to celebrate this historic event.” On Memorial Day, May 27, 2013, the Hispanic-American Veterans Memorial Monument will be unveiled at the Buffalo and Erie County Naval and Military Park in Buffalo, NY. The monument will have a special plaque to memorialize the 65th Infantry Regiment. This is the first landmark of its kind for Hispanic Americans in the region. “It will be part of a symbol, in which many families that had loved ones serve in the past, present and future will be able to use this monument and reflect on the sacrifices that are being made,” says Casimiro Rodríguez, a member of the committee fund drive.

The Congressional Gold Medal initiative for the 65th Infantry Regiment is greatly catching momentum due to the help of supporters like you. Hopefully very soon, Rep. Pedro Pierluisi (Puerto Rico’s Resident Commissioner) and Rep. Bill Posey (of the Central-Eastern Florida district) will officially co-introduce legislation in support of a 65th Inf. Congressional Gold Medal in the House of Representatives. The U.S. Senate is also considering introducing its own legislation. Then the long process begins to get the support by a majority of both the House of Representatives and the Senate for a final vote of the bill. Now, more than ever, we need you to call, write or visit your local Congressman and U.S. Senators to urge them to vote in favor of this bill. Without national support by our politicians, this bill will not pass. OUR 65TH INFANTRY VETERANS While conducting research on the 65th these many years, I noticed a recurring pattern that may surprise many of you – and that is the overwhelming number of 65th Infantry veterans who became career soldiers. It is obvious by just looking at our Borinqueneer Photos on Page 7 - nine of the 20 veterans are retirees! So I asked MSG Eric Hunt, an Army recruiter whose uncle served with the 65th Infantry, to write an article about this very important phenomenon which we will publish in the November issue. I think you will find it as enlightening as I do. No one has done this kind of research before and I suspect the statistics on Puerto Rican career soldiers is much higher than many realize. This is why we encourage our 65th veterans and their families to continue to send information on their military service to us so that we can use this important research to provide a profile of proud Puerto Rican military service in our community. I want to thank those of you who have returned completed 65th Infantry Census Forms to us, along with your photos, DD214s, citations and letters.

En mis investigaciónes sobre el 65 a través de los años, noté un patrón que se repite y que quizás sorprenda a muchos de ustedes – y es el número aplastante de veteranos del 65 que se hicieron soldados de carrera. ¡Es obvio en sólo mirar a las Fotos en la Página 7 - nueve de los 20 veteranos son jubilados! Por tal razón, le pedí al Sargento Maestre Eric Hunt, un reclutador de Ejército cuyo tío sirvió en el 65, a que escribiera un artículo sobre este fenómeno de tanta importancia para publicarlo en la edición de noviembre. Pienso que lo encontrarán tan interesante como yo. Nadie ha hecho este tipo de investigación anteriormente y sospecho que la estadística de soldados de carrera puertorriqueños es mucho más alta de lo que imaginamos. Por eso le pedimos a nuestros veteranos del 65 y a sus familias a que sigan enviándonos información sobre su servicio militar de modo que podamos usar esta base de datos para proporcionar un perfil del orgulloso servicio militar de los puertorriqueños en nuestra comunidad. would like to profile some of the multiple Puerto Rican family members who not only served in the 65th Infantry Regiment, but in all the armed forces. We thought it best to just provide excerpts from veteran letters, newspaper articles and photos to demonstrate the long family tradition of military service. The photo on the right shows the six Anguiera brothers who served in the 65th Infantry Regiment during World War II. Below is a letter written by 65th vet Marcelino Cruz Rodríguez (who passed away in 2008): “The Korean War started in 1950. In this war, three of my younger brothers were recruited along with the two oldest that had joined during World War II. We were five sons from the same mother in a war. We all went to combat and participated in the the bloodiest battles of the Korean War; battles at the White Horse Hill, Kelly Hill and the famous Iron Horse Hill Battle whose name was later changed to ‘Jackson Heights.’ I would like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to my mother, Asunción Rodríguez. To do a posthumous honor in the name of her five sons who caused her enormous suffering and for withstanding the anxiety of the Korean war where we five sons were fighting. I was the only one of five sons that later had three sons serving with pride in the Army. None of us refused to go to combat. It was an honor for her, for my father and for us.“
Has Given 7 Sons to the Army (El Mundo newspaper, July 3, 1951) Don José Norat Padilla feels proud for his contribution to the United Nations war effort. Six sons are currently serving in the U.S. Army, four of which have seen action in Korea – two of them have recently been wounded. The warrior sons of José and Mrs. Maria Dolores de Norat are as follows: Wilfredo, 20, stationed in Losey Field; Victor Israel, 19, stationed in Tortuguero; and Manuel, 25, interned in a Texas hospital for wounds received in Korea where he lost an arm. Another wounded in combat is Héctor Fernando, 21, who is in a hospital in Japan. Still in Corea is Enrique, 28, and Luis, who returned Friday to his parents’ home. José, a veteran, was discharged in 1946 after serving two years in Japan.

Este mayo, en honor al Día de las Madres, nos
gustaría trazar un perfil de algunos de los casos de múltiples familiares puertorriqueños que no sólo han servido en el Regimiento 65 de Infan-tería, pero en todas las fuerzas armadas. Pensa-mos que quizás sería mejor presentar sólo extrac-tos de cartas de veteranos, artículos de prensa y fotos para demostrar la larga tradición de servicio militar en las familias. La foto a la izquierda mues-tra a los seis hermanos Anguiera que sirvieron en el Regto. 65 de Inf. durante la 2da Guerra Mun-dial. La siguiente es una carta escrita por el vete-rano del 65 Marcelino Cruz Rodríguez (quien falleció en el 2008): “En el 1950 surge la Guerra de Corea. En esta
guerra fuimos reclutados tres de mis hermanos menores y los dos mayores que habían ingresado en la 2da Guerra. Éramos cinco hijos de la misma madre en una guerra. Todos fuimos a combate y participamos de las más cruentas batallas de la guerra Coreana, batallas como la de la Colina Caballo Blanco, Colina Kelly y la famosa Batalla de la Colina Caballo de Hierro que luego se le cambió el nombre a ‘Jackson Heights.’ Quiero aprovechar este momento para honrar a mi madre, Asunción Rodríguez. Hacer un honor póstumo y a nombre de sus cinco hijos que le causamos el enorme sufrimiento y por soportar la intranquilidad de la guerra coreana donde estuvimos los 5 hijos combatiendo. Fui el único de los 5 hijos que luego tuvo 3 hijos sirviendo con orgullo en el Ejército de los Estados Unidos. Ninguno nos negamos a estar en combate. Fue un orgullo para ella, para mi padre y para nosotros.“
Ha Dado 7 Hijos al Ejército (periódico El Mundo, 3 de julio de 1951) Don José Norat Padilla se siente orgulloso por su aportación al esfuerzo de la guerra de las Naciones Unidas. Seis de sus hijos se encuentran prestando servicios en el Ejército, cuatro de los cuales han visto acción en Corea – dos de ellos actualmente heridos. Los hijos combatientes de don José y de doña María Dolores de Norat son los siguientes: Wilfredo , de 20 años, destacado en Losey Field; Victor Israel, de 19 años, acantonado en Tortuguero; y Manuel, de 25 años, recluído en un hospital en Tejas, bajo tratamiento de heridas en Corea, donde perdió un brazo. The 5 Velázquez Brothers (El Imparcial newspaper, Feb. 8, 1953) Twenty-nine year-old Maximiliano, served 16 months in Korea (in the 65th Inf. Regt.) and now is a transportation sergeant in Losey Field; Noe, 22 years old, was stationed in Panama and recently returned to Puerto RIco after reenlisting for 3 more years; 21-year-old Luis Fernando, was admitted to Rodriguez Hospital in San Juan, as a result of an operation that he had in Japan in the throat and the ears; 19-year-old Jorge Usbaldo is stationed in Tortuguero, and 20-year-old Pedro Angel, has been at the front lines of Korea for seven months.
Six Puerto Rican Brothers Render Military Service (El Mundo newspaper, January 3, 1945) Twin Puerto Rican brothers, Sgt. Ismael and Cpl. Raúl Martínez Roig, of Camuy, are two soldiers stationed in the Antillles Military Department whose four brothers – Blanca, Ernesto, Francisco and Angel – are also serving in the U.S. Armed forces. Ismael and Raúl, who are 20 years old, are serving in Aruba and St. Thomas, respectively. Blanca, 24 years old, is with the Army’s Auxiliary Women’s Corps in Georgia. Twenty-three year old Sergeant Major Francisco, and 19-year-old Sergeant Ernesto, provide services somewhere overseas. Angel, 26 years old, is in the U.S Marines.
Their Son at War (El Impartial newspaper, November 4, 1945) The Morales Cintrón Brothers, sons of Eduardo Morales y Rosenda Cintrón Morales of Naranjito, are the contributions of another distinguished Puerto Rican family, to the resounding victory reached by the countries joined in this fight of so many years against the enemies of democracy. In the photo above, from left to right, Cpl. David Morales stationed in the Pacific; Sgt. Ramón Morales, in England; Cpl. Eduardo Morales, in the Aleutian Islands; Cpl. Alfredo Morales, stationed in Texas and the Private First Class Bolivar Morales.
Los 5 Hermanos Velázquez (El Imparcial, 8 de febrero de 1953) Maximiliano, de 29 años, sirvió 16 meses en Corea (en el 65 de Inf.) y ahora es sargento de transportación en Losey Field; Noe, de 22 años, estuvo destacado en Panamá y recientemente regresó a la Isla después de haber jurado por tres años más; Luis Fernando, de 21 años, recluído en el Hospital Rodríguez, de San Juan, a consecuencia de una operación sufrida en la garganta y los oídos y que le fuera practicada en Japón; Jorge Usbaldo, de 19 años, destacado en Tortuguero, y Pedro Angel, de 20 años, quien lleva siete meses en la línea de fuego en Corea.

Su Hijo en la Guerra (periódico El Imparcial, 4 de noviembre de 1945) Los Hermanos Morales Cintrón, hijos de Eduardo Morales y Rosenda Cintrón de Morales de Naranjito, es la contribución de otra distinguida familia puertorriqueña, al triunfo resonante alcanzado por los paises unidos en su lucha de tantos años en contra de los enemigos de la democracia. En la foto arriba, de izquierda a derecha, Cabo David Morales, destacado en el Pacífico; Sgto. We encourage our readers to inform us of the passing of any Borinqueneer family member or friend. We mail this newsletter to all 65th Infantry veterans who are in our mailing list. Oftentimes though, a veteran passes away and we are not aware of this so we continue to send the newsletter. To solve this problem, we have begun to update our mailing list to make it current. Some of you may receive a phone call from us to verify your current information. Sadly, we are listing below some Borinqueneer veterans who were on our list but have passed away. May they rest in peace! (Please inform us if there are any errors.) Eugenio Martínez Matos, 82, was born in Cabo Rojo, PR on Sept. 9, 1931. He was drafted in 1951 and served in Company “L” participating in the bloody Kelly Hill battle. Later on a patrol that was lost in the Iron Triangle, he along with some others were arrested for refusing their officer’s orders and he was subsequently court-martialed. We were extremely grateful that Eugenio was willing to talk about his difficult experiences in our documentary film. His daughter, Carmen, would write: “With heavy hearts and with great sadness, I must inform you that my father, after fighting like a true soldier once more in his life, has recently succumbed to his ailments and left this earth on Feb. 25, 2013. He spent his final days with his family nearby in the country that he loved and fought so valiantly for so many years ago. One of countless number of fond memories about my father was the great appreciation and the immediate sense of pride he had for being able to be a part of the documentary film. He was grateful to be able to lend his unique experience and tell his story, knowing that it would be heard by many, and we believe that it gave him the ability to make peace with this unique experience. For this we thank you graciously.” Reported by his daughter, Carmen Vilanova.
Luis E. Lugo (listed in Army as Luis Escribano-Lugo) died on November 19, 2011 with his loving family at his side at the age of 84. Born on October 11, 1927 in Las Piedras, Puerto Rico and a resident of Metairie, Louisiana. Luis served in Company “F”, 65th Inf. during the Korean War and was a prisoner of war for 2 years. He was captured in the Demilitarized Zone when the entire company was surrounded by the Chinese. During his time in service he was awarded the Purple Heart. Later he worked 30 years with the Internal Revenue Service as an agent and received the Albert Gallatin Award for his outstanding service upon retiring in 1985. Adapted from DignityMemorial.com

Eugenio Martínez Matos, 82, nació en Cabo Rojo, PR el 9 de septiembre de 1931. Fue llamado al Ejército en 1951 y sirvió en la Compañía “L” participando en la sangrienta batalla de la Colina Kelly. Después, en una patrulla que se perdió en el Triángulo de Hierro, él junto con otros fue detenido por rehusar las órdenes de su oficial y fue procesado en consejo de guerra posteriormente. Nosotros agradecemos que Eugenio quiso hablar sobre sus experiencias difíciles en nuestra película documental. Su hija, Carmen, escribíó: “Con corazones pesados y con gran tristeza, debo informarle que mi padre, después de luchar como un soldado verdadero una vez más en su vida, recientemente pereció de sus dolencias y dejó esta
tierra el 25 de febrero de 2013. Pasó sus días finales cerca de su familia en el país que amó y por el cual luchó tan valientemente hace años. Uno de los innumerables recuerdos tiernos sobre mi padre era la gran apreciación y el inmediato sentido de orgullo que él sintió por haber sido parte de la película documental. Luis E. Lugo (conocido en el Ejército como Luis Escribano-Lugo) murió a la edad de 84 años el 19 de noviembre de 2011 con su querida familia a su lado. Nació el 11 de octubre de 1927 en Las Piedras, PR y fue residente de Metairie, Luisiana. Luis sirvió en la Compañía “F”, 65 de Inf. durante la Guerra de Corea y fue prisionero de guerra por 2 años. Fue capturado en la Zona Desmilitarizada cuando la compañía entera fue rodeada por los chinos. Durante su tiempo en el Ejército le concedieron el Corazón de Púrpura. Después trabajó 30 años en el Servicio de Impuestos Internos como agente y al jubilarse en 1985, recibió el Premio de Albert Gallatin por su

Tte. Cor. Walter P. Lukens (Ret.), 85, murió el 9 de octubre de 2009 en Alexandría, Virginia de la enfermedad de Alzheimer. Nació el 19 de mayo de 1924 en Merced, California. El Cor. Lukens se graduó en 1947 de la Academia Militar en West Point. Sirvió en Headquarters Company del 3r Batallón del 65 de Infantería durante la Guerra de Corea donde le concedieron la Estrella de Bronce por valor. El 21 de febrero de 1951, Lukens, entonces un Capitán y oficial de inteligencia de batallón, observaba tanto el avance de un pelotón amistoso al igual de conocidas posiciones enemigas a través del Río Han. Cuando el pelotón se acercó al río, fue atacado por armas pesadas portátiles enemigas, armas automáticas, y fuego de mortero que causó que fueran arrinconados y que sufrieran varios bajas. Cuando el Cap. Lukens notó que el pelotón se retiraba y dejaba algunos hombres heridos atrás, él dejó su puesto de
observación y, con indiferencia completa por su seguridad personal ante intenso fuego enemigo, asistió en el transporte de los hombres heridos a una posición de seguridad. Lukens se graduó del colegio de abogados de la Universidad de Stanford en 1955 y posteriormente sirvió en la Abogacía General. En 1967, se retiró del Ejército con 20 años de servicio como teniente coronel y se hizo ejecutivo con el contratista militar Litton Industries. Él se retiró en 1991. En 1989, el Presidente George Bush destacó al Cor. Lukens por su servicio de comate en la ceremonia de revelación para el diseño del Monumento Conmemorativo de Veteranos de la Guerra de Corea. Agustín Adán Ramírez (Ret.) falleció pacíficamente el 18 de abril de 2011 en LaGrange, Georgia después de complicaciones causadas por una caída cuando jugaba golf. El Cor. Ramírez nació el 20 de septiembre de 1917 en Puerto Rico y pasó sus años de escuela primaria en Nueva York. Su padre regresó a Puerto Rico durante la Depresión donde Ramirez asistió a la escuela secundaria y la universidad. Un atleta de tres deportes, Ramírez mantuvo récords de pista en Puerto Rico por más de diez años. Se graduó del colegio con un bachillerato en Ingeniería Química y fue comisionado como subteniente de Infantería en el Ejército en 1940. Ramírez estuvo en servicio activo por más de veinte años, fue veterano de la 2da Guerra Mundial y de la Guerra de Corea y sirvió cuatro años en combate. Durante la Guerra de Corea, sirvió de mayor en la Compañía de Servicio del 65 de Inf. donde recibió la Estrella de Bronce por Servicio Meritorio. Luis Ramos, 89, falleció el 11 de octubre de 2012 en Coral Springs, Florida. Luis nació el 27 de octubre de 1922 en Coamo, PR. En 1940, se ofreció para el Ejército cuando tenía 18 años y sirvió por 14 años. Participó en la 2da Guerra Mundial y la Guerra de Corea en la Compañía “K”, 65 de Inf., donde trabajó de radiotécnico en comunicaciones en las líneas fronteras. Durante el tributo para el 65 en San Juan en septiembre de 2012, finalmente le concedieron la Estrella de Bronce que le debían. El hijo de Luis escribió: “Mi padre se sentía tan orgulloso de la medalla que recibió en Puerto Rico. Era muy importante para él cerrar aquel capítulo en su vida y recibir la medalla que le habían otorgado, pero que nunca había recibido. Gracias por todo lo que hizo para mi padre porque lo hizo sentirse orgulloso de su servicio con los Estados Unidos.” Reportado por su hijo, Luis Ramos, hijo.
LTC Walter P. Lukens (Ret.), 85, died on Oct. 9, 2009 in Alexandria, Virginia from the Alzheimer's disease. Born on May19, 1924 in Merced, Calif., Col. Lukens was a 1947 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He served in Headquarters Company, 3d Battalion of the 65th Infantry during the Korean War where he was awarded a Bronze Star for valor. On February 21, 1951, Lukens, then a Captain and battalion intelligence officer, was observing both the advance of a friendly platoon as well as known enemy positions across the Han River. As the platoon approached the river, it encountered heavy enemy small arms, automatic weapons, and mortar fire which resulted in its being pinned down and suffering several casualties. When Capt. Lukens noted that the platoon was withdrawing and leaving some of the wounded men behind, he left his observation post and, with complete disregard for his personal safety in the face of intense enemy fire, assisted in carrying the wounded men to a position of comparative safety. Lukens graduated from Stanford University law school in 1955 and subsequently served in the Judge Advocate General's Corps. In 1967, he retired from the military after 20 years of service with the rank of lieutenant colonel and became an executive with the military contractor Litton Industries. He retired in 1991. In 1989, President George Bush singled out Col. Lukens at the unveiling ceremony for the design of the Korean War Veterans Memorial for Col. Lukens's combat service. Reported on WashingtonPost.com. LTC Agustín Adán Ramírez (Ret.) passed away peacefully the evening of April 18, 2011 in LaGrange, Georgia after complications arising from a fall while playing golf several weeks earlier. Col. Ramírez was born on Sept. 20, 1917 in Puerto Rico and spent his elementary school years in New York City. His father returned to Puerto Rico during the Depression where Ramirez went to high school and University. A three sport athlete, Ramírez held track records in Puerto Rico for over ten years. He graduated from college with a BS degree in Chemical Engineering and was commissioned in the Army as a Second Lieutenant Infantry officer in 1940. Ramírez served on active duty for over twenty years, was a veteran of the Second World War and the Korean War and spent four years in combat duty. During the Korean War, he served as a major in Service Company, 65th Inf. receiving a Bronze Star for Meritorious Service. In addition, he received the European-African-Mediterranean Campaign Medals and eight overseas bars, amongst many others. He served seven years in overseas duty. In 1960, Ramirez retired to Miami, Florida and became a certified teacher after attending the University of Miami. He taught high school for twenty years and served as a language department head at Miami Springs High School for the majority of that time. Adapted from DignityMemorial.com

It was very important for him to close that chapter in his life and receive the medals he had been awarded but never received.
