Motor Current Analysis with a vbSeries Instrument

This article walks you through conducting motor current analysis with a vbSeries portable vibration analyzer. It explains how to:

• Set up your current sensor • Set up the measurement • Take the measurement

Set up Current Sensor

Assuming you are using a Fluke i400 current clamp or similar product, this explains how to set up for 1mV/A or 10 mV/A. This depends on 40A or 400A maximum scaling — We will assume 1 mV/A.

To set up your instrument for the current sensor:

1. Press Options on the main menu > Press Sensor Setup.

2. Press Change Sensor > Press Create New Sensor.

TIP: Press to see the button labels.

3. Use the buttons provided to select the sensor settings shown in this image:

NOTE: In this example the sensor is named “Current”, however you can choose another name if required.

7. Toggle the buttons provided to select the final measurement settings shown in this image:

Selecting the final settings for your measurement

NOTE: With the low Fmax value of 100 Hz and choice of 1600 lines, this is a 16 second measurement at a minimum. A higher number of averages or lines of resolution will take proportionally longer to complete the measurement.

8. Press — You are now ready to hook up the current clamp and take your measurement.
