Combustible dusts & fibres bin dangerous quantities are classified as hazardous and divided into three zones according to level of risk

The relationship between temperature class , surface temperature and cloud or layer ignition temperatureand specifications and characteristics of some common combustible dusts can be found on table 3 and 4

• Explosive dust / air atmosphere presents continously for a long periods

• Degree of explosive occurs is high

• Explosive dust /air atmosphere presents in normal operations

• Degree of explosive occurs is medium

• Dust Excluding Ignition Proof (Ex tD ) Zone 21 is normally used

• Explosive dust / air atmosphere is not likely presents in normal operations

• Degree of explosive occurs is low

• Dust Excluding Ignition Proof (Ex tD) Zone 22 is normally used

Explosive gas atmospheres are classified into zones based on • the frequency • duration of their occurrence

• Explosive gas atmosphere presents continuously for a long periods

• Degree of explosive occurs is high

• Explosive gas atmosphere presents in normal operations

• Degree of explosive occurs is medium

• Increased safety motors (Ex e ) is normally used

• Operation under constant load• Operate long enough to allow the machine to reach thermal equilibrium

• Operation under repeat ,constant load in specified cycles.• Neither operating nor resting period are long enough to allow the machine to reach thermal equilibrium .• Idle time of the machine is long enough to allow the machine to cool down to ambient temperature• Short term operation between 10 , 30 , 60 & 90 minutes

• Operation under repeat ,constant load in specified cycles.• Neither operating nor resting period are long enough to allow the machine to reach thermal equilibrium .• Small starting loss , does not influence the temperature rise.• Starting time are 15 , 25 , 40 & 60 % at a 10 minute cycle

• Operation under repeat ,constant load in specified cycles.• Start of motor do influence the temperature rise.

• Same as S4 operation • Electric braking of the machine has an essential influence on the temperature rise

• Operation consisting of a continuous series of equal cycles• Each cycle consists of no load and constant load period• Cycle is not long enough to allow the machine to reach thermal equilibrium in one cycle• Relative starting time must be specified.

• Uninterrupted operation with a series of constant loading and braking periods• Number of cycles / hour and inertial constant must be specified

• Only with pole amplitude modulated motors.• Operation must have the following data for each pole : Number of start per hour , Inertial constant & Relative operation period
