MQXFA Magnet Fiducializationand Alignment
2
Outline
Feb 3 2016 MQXFA Magnet Fiducialization and Alignment
• Fiducialization Plan– Coil fiducialization– Magnet fiducial features
• Assembly tooling and infrastructure• Magnetic measurements• What can be achievable?

Fiducializing Coils
Feb 3 2016
• Currently CMM measurements have only been characterizing coil size/shape
• We have not implemented any features to measure the coils and locate their mechanical centers yet

Proposed Coil Ends

5
Proposed Coil Ends
Feb 3 2016
Either a coil fiducial plate, impregnated (Both ends),Or, 2-3 pin holes to be drilled into the end shoes and reamed after reaction
This method will be a direct measurement to the coils, removing the uncertainty of measuring the collar ends

Fiducializing the Coil Mechanical Center
Feb 3 2016
When coils are measured, CMM data will also measure the fiducials on both ends to locate them with respect to the theoretical center
Perhaps pin holes in poles can also be used in the ID if necessary; requiring spot faces

Yoke fiducialization at Shell-Yoke Assembly
Feb 3 2016
• We are exploring the possibility of both measuring and aligning the shell-yokes during the pre-assembly step– Are we able to perform an alignment at this stage, if
necessary?– Not yet sure if this is practical; we will try this, though

Magnet Fiducialization Features
Feb 3 2016
• Survey tooling block will be used when measuring the Yoke blocks to locate their centers
• Tooling block will be mounted to at least three quadrants (bottom quadrant is questionable) to fiducialize the structure

Yoke Survey Tooling Block
Feb 3 2016
• “1-2-3” Style block– Magnetic hold down

Fiducializing the Magnet Structure
Feb 3 2016
• Yoke/magnet fiducial features must be accessible after magnet has been assembled, as depicted here
Coil targets defined to their mechanical center
Yoke survey block will bedefined to coil targets
Yoke featuresremain accessible after axial
endplates are installed

Warm Magnetic Measurements
Feb 3 2016
• May use the existing warm measurement probe with a different arrangement of two pickup coils– we can measure the field angle from the first coil relative to that from the second coil as we scan along the magnet (We will
check the possible resolution of this method)• Tilt angle sensors
– The typical accelerometer with 12-bitADC has a resolution of 1 mrad (0.057 degrees). With inclinometers the resolution can reach 0.1 mrad
• Survey targets can be attached to the measurement probe to track position and location of probe during measurements
• Stretched wire measurements may also be performed• This information will be combined with the mechanical fiducialization data

Proposed Fiducial Plan
Feb 3 2016
Yoke Fiducials, 3x-4x per axial location(bottom may not be readily accessible)
Coil Fiducials,Impregnated (4x),Both ends
Measured (mech/mag)Centers

Magnet integration table will be surveyed and fixed into place
Network of semi-permenent survey monuments for aligning the tables and defining coordinate system when surveying magnet structure

Fixed, and aligned Magnet Integration Table

What is Achievable?
Feb 3 2016
• This is more of a fiducialization process• Magnet alignment: No real “knobs to turn”– Assembly tooling will be aligned, though– Will likely use a laser tracker (FARO Vantage system)– Our survey crew will need to perform some tests

Summary
Feb 3 2016
• Coil fiducialization concepts and features proposed at coil and coil parts fabrication
• Assembly tooling will be surveyed and aligned• Magnet fiducialization concepts presented,
still in development

MQXFSD1 Alignment Observations
Feb 3 2016
• MQXFSD assembly appears to be mechanically well centered– All alignment keys were loose after the bladder
operations (keys are not being loaded in shear)
Question: What are the specifications/requirements for the assembly (center, twist, etc.)?
