Week 7 (WB 18.5.2020) Mrs Angel’s Group This week we are going to have a think about some arithmetic skills and displaying and interpreting data. Arithmetic: Keep playing card games (number bond Go Fish is a really helpful one but if you feel that those skills are embedded have a go at War or Spit instead. You could even introduce Pontoon) Have a look at https://nrich.maths.org/10654 doubling and halving is a really important skill. You could have a go at making a skittles addition game with things from your recycling bin https://nrich.maths.org/10654 (it could be fun to use all different types of bottles for this, you could make the more difficult to knock over bottles have a higher value, also you don’t need to paint them and make them look special, bottles with water in them and numbers written in marker pen is fine!) Think of a number (e.g. 24) and say ‘The answer is 24, what could the calculation be?’ work together to find as many ways as possible to make the number. This is a great activity because you can make it as easy or as hard as you like. Play Dartboard Doubles and Halves https://www.topmarks.co.uk/Flash.aspx?f=dartboarddoublesandhalves Interpreting data: Have a go at making some pictograms https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qenKu-GUAE8 you could make a pictogram of the different fruits in the fruit bowl, different tins in the cupboard, flowers in the garden and so on. The most important thing is for the children to understand that they need to look at the key and find the value of one whole picture in order to interpret the pictogram. Have a look at this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kUXmLcfp3-o it talks about range at the end which the children don’t need to know about yet so I would stop when you reach that bit! Week 7 (WB 18.5.2020)

Mrs Angel’s Group

This week we are going to have a think about some arithmetic skills and displaying and interpreting data.

Arithmetic:

Keep playing card games (number bond Go Fish is a really helpful one but if you feel that those skills are embedded have a go at War or Spit

instead. You could even introduce Pontoon)

Have a look at https://nrich.maths.org/10654 doubling and halving is a really important skill.

You could have a go at making a skittles addition game with things from your recycling bin https://nrich.maths.org/10654 (it could be fun to use all

different types of bottles for this, you could make the more difficult to knock over bottles have a higher value, also you don’t need to paint them

and make them look special, bottles with water in them and numbers written in marker pen is fine!)

Think of a number (e.g. 24) and say ‘The answer is 24, what could the calculation be?’ work together to find as many ways as possible to make the

number. This is a great activity because you can make it as easy or as hard as you like.

Interpreting data:

Have a go at making some pictograms https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qenKu-GUAE8 you could make a pictogram of the different fruits in

the fruit bowl, different tins in the cupboard, flowers in the garden and so on. The most important thing is for the children to understand that

they need to look at the key and find the value of one whole picture in order to interpret the pictogram. Have a look at this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kUXmLcfp3-o it talks about range at the end which the children don’t need to know about yet so I would

stop when you reach that bit!

Have a go at the questions on the sheets in the seprate file.

Don’t forget to keep your times tables learning going by playing TT Rock Stars and try Numbots (accessed through the TTRS website) or

use top marks activities for a change.

Try this game https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zd2f7nb/articles/zn2y7nb lots of different maths skills to practise in a fun game.

https://mathsbot.com/questionGenerator This website is great for creating questions for you so that you can practise your

calculations. Just choose your preferred level of difficulty and the area of maths you would like to work on and away you go!

https://corbettmathsprimary.com/5-a-day There are 5 questions per day, with different levels of difficulty.

Main Activities

This week I would like the children to continue with the work on fractions.

Please follow this link https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-3/ for the video clips, the matching worksheets are below.

Summer Term Week 1 – Equivalent fractions, ordering and comparing fractions – we are running behind the schedule.

If you haven’t got as far as this, no problem, just carry on from where you have got to.

The Year 4 focus for both White Rose and BBC Bitesize Daily Lessons this week in Maths is Fractions.

Page 21: Mrs Angel’s Group tles have a higher value, also you don’t ... · Mrs Angel’s Group This week we are going to have a think about some arithmetic skills and displaying and interpreting

The learning this week covers comparing fractions, equivalent fractions and simplifying fractions. Remember

you can choose to use either resource or a combination of both. Both websites have a ‘Challenge of the Week’ activity on Friday.

https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-4/ The video tutorials can be found online and the other resources you need have been provided as a separate file. You may have already covered the content in Monday’s lesson if you have been following White Rose from the start so there is a different activity revising ‘What is a Fraction?’ in the worksheet resources.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/tags/z63tt39/year-4-and-p5-lessons/1

(If you have been working through the White Rose Maths week by week, you can of course continue to do so at your own pace if you prefer.)

Something different…. Try a game of Mathopoly! This version practises adding 3-digit numbers. The game is included in the resource file.

Calculations: https://mathsbot.com/questionGenerator

Keep practicing your calculation skills by generating your own questions. Remember you can choose your level of difficulty, the area of Maths you would like to work on and set yourself a time limit!
