LUXURY COASTAL

EXPEDITIONSHOW DO YOU DEFINE LUXURY? Since the first sailing ships left port for destinations unknown, expeditions and luxury have been mutually exclusive. If one wished to explore strange lands, one had to expect a certain amount of discomfort. For this reason, returns from expeditions have always been viewed as heroic. The traveler, having survived the odds, was heralded as one who possessed a higher level of mental and physical prowess,a fortitude worthy of our admiration and esteem. Luxury, seen in contrast, was defined by the familiar comforts of home.

Today, expeditions are no longer the realm of the intrepid few. And luxury has taken to the seas. On board the MS Saint Laurent, we define luxury with uniquely thrilling itineraries accessed in the comfort of tranquil accommodations. With carefully considered itineraries that foster meaningful connections to each new destination. The full attention of a generous and professional crew. The enriching company of specialists and naturalist guides. Regionally inspired cuisine and the pure luxury of time to savor it all.

Join us aboard the MS Saint Laurent for our Summer and Winter voyages in North America and Central & South America. Each one a heroic journey and a luxury not to be missed.

“Luxury is gaining access to comforts and experiences you imagined were out of reach ... extraordinary destinations filled with adventures.

NOTRE-DAME-DES-VICTOIRES Québec City’s Historic Gem

Listed as a historic monument in 1929, the Notre-Dame-des-Victoires is a small Roman Catholic stone church that was first completed in 1723. The name commemorates the 1690 Battle of Québec and the 1711 sinking of ships in the British fleet commanded by Sir Hovenden Walker. The church underwent a complete restoration after the British bombardment of 1759. Since then it has undergone further work to restore its colonial French character. An active place of worship, the church has also been used as a filming location in 2002 (Catch Me If You

Can) and 2004 (Taking Lives).

After a light breakfast, we’ll go ashore and immerse ourselves in the charm and character of Old Québec (Vieux-Québec), the last remaining fortified city north of Mexico. We’ll see the public square, known as Place Royale, historic Petit-Champlain, and Notre-Dame-des-Victoires. Next, we’ll ride the Old Québec Funicular to the impressive Château Frontenac, perched atop Cape Diamond. Then, we’ll explore the fortress area of the Upper City passing Place d’Armes, the Québec Seminary, and the Convent. The St. Lawrence River flows more than 1,900 miles from the world’s largest system of freshwater lakes, the Great Lakes, to the Atlantic Ocean. The river was named by French explorer Jacques Cartier, whose arrival in the estuary on the 10th of August coincided with the feast day of St. Lawrence, patron saint of cooks and chefs.

This afternoon, we’ll witness the splendor of the French-Canadian countryside on an idyllic drive into the foothills of the Laurentian Mountains. Marvel at scenic Lac Beauport. See the towering Montmorency Falls cascading down a 272-foot cliff. Stop into a local vineyard for a special wine tasting. And drive through the picturesque villages of Île d’Orléans, a tiny island in the St. Lawrence River. Our final stop will be a visit to an authentic “sugar shack” where we’ll learn about the process of collecting syrup and sample the sweet maple taffy.

ANNE OF GREEN GABLESAbout

Penned by Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery and published in 1908, the international bestseller Anne of Green Gables recounts the adventures of a young orphan girl who is sent to work on a farm on Prince Edward Island. The Green Gables farmhouse, where the novel is set, is now a National Historic Site within Prince Edward Island National Park. Visitors can tour the house as well as other settings from the book, including: the Haunted Woods, Lover’s Lane, and Balsam Hollow.

Halifax, Nova ScotiaDAY 6

During our excursion today, we’ll follow a trail through the same historic streets the delegates walked when they gathered in 1864 for the conference that led to the Confederation of Canada. Then, we’ll drive along the North Shore to Cavendish Bay, Prince Edward Island National Park, and the farmstead that inspired L.M. Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables. Enjoy free time strolling along the shores of the bay or the charming city center before we return to the ship for an exceptional dinner overlooking the sea.

Today, we’ll board a restored Double Decker Bus—with a kilted driver and guide—for an upbeat tour of Nova Scotia’s capital city. We’ll see the Province House, the original home of Britain’s first overseas government and the seat of Nova Scotia’s current

government. Choose to visit the star-shaped Halifax Citadel to watch the changing of the sentry and hear the Royal Artillery fire the Noon Gun or choose to visit the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic with memorabilia from the Titanic. Then we’ll make our way back down to Pier 21 and enjoy perusing the eclectic waterfront shops before returning to the ship for lunch and a relaxing afternoon of sailing along the coast of Nova Scotia.

INDIVIDUAL PURSUITS

Tour of Scenic St. Andrews-by-the-Sea

One of the oldest villages in the Canadian Maritimes, the seaside resort of St. Andrews- by-the-Sea is a treasure trove of beautiful architecture, unparalleled scenery, and rich marine life. In the 19th century the town served as a shipping port for lumber and fish, which were exchanged in the West Indies for molasses and rum. Today, it is an exclusive summer retreat, yet the streets remain steeped in turn-of-the-century charm. Highlights of this tour include the St. Andrews Blockhouse and the Algonquin Resort, a Tudor-style “castle” where Princess Diana once stayed.

Day 8

INDIVIDUAL PURSUITS

Oceanarium and Lobster Bake

In authentic “Downeast” lobster bake style, we’ll begin this tour with a buffet of fresh Maine lobster, drizzled with butter and accompanied by a blueberry dessert. (Steak is available upon request for non-lobster eaters). Following our meal, we’ll take a scenic drive along the ocean to the Mount Desert Oceanarium where a licensed Maine lobsterman will describe the life cycle of a lobster and explain how these marine crustaceans are caught in the wild. Next, we’ll visit the Lobster Hatchery to learn how lobsters are sustainably farmed and raised.

DAY 6

Today, we’ll transit the Soo Locks from Lake Huron into Lake Superior at Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. Our guided excursion includes a visit to the New Fort Brady, a tour of the Valley Camp Museum Ship, a stop at the Soo Locks viewing platform, and a walk through the visitor’s center to learn about the four parallel locks—MacArthur (1943), Poe (1895), Davis (1914), and Sabin (1919—which pass an average of 10,000 ships per year.

This morning, we’ll cruise though the rugged beauty of Georgian Bay, sometimes called the sixth Great Lake. Coming ashore at Little Current, we’ll explore the area’s rich native and nautical history. At Immaculate Conception Church, we’ll learn how the beliefs and customs of the Ojibwe intertwine with those of the Catholic Church. The second largest of the Great Lakes, Lake Huron boasts a surface area of 23,000 square miles. Like the other Great Lakes, it was formed at the end of the last ice age as the glaciers retreated. With over 30,000 islands, Lake Huron has more shoreline than any of the other Great Lakes. After a scenic day of cruising, we’ll gather in the ship’s main dining room for a gourmet dinner.

DAY 7

Sailing from Lake Erie to Lake Huron, the MS Saint Laurent will call on Windsor, Ontario, known as “The City of Roses.” Here, we’ll board a motorcoach and cross Ambassador Bridge, a privately owned suspension bridge that connects Windsor with Detroit. This bridge is the busiest international trade crossing in North America, supporting $13 billion (USD) in annual production. Just outside of Detroit, we’ll visit the Henry Ford Museum where highlights include: the limousine that carried President John F. Kennedy on that fateful day in Texas, the bus in which Rosa Parks stood her ground and sparked the Civil Rights movement, and the chair from Ford Theatre in which Abraham Lincoln was sitting when he was shot. After our tour, we’ll return to the ship for dinner and set sail for Lake Huron.

THE SOO LOCKSAbout

A wonder of engineering, the mighty Soo Locks have provided safe passage—for freighters, barges, tugboats, and small ships—through the 21-foot drop between Lake Superior and Lake Huron for nearly 160 years. The original State Locks were completed in 1855 and navigated by 27 vessels in their first year of operation. Today, as many as 5,000-10,000 vessels pass through four parallel locks, hauling over 86 million tons of cargo annually. Operated by the United States Corps of Engineers, the four locks include the Davis, Sabin, MacArthur, and Poe.

DAY 4

Today, we’ll transit the Soo Locks from Lake Huron into Lake Superior at Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. Our guided excursion includes a visit to the New Fort Brady, a tour of the Valley Camp Museum Ship, a stop at the Soo Locks viewing platform, and a walk through the visitor’s center to learn about the four parallel locks—MacArthur (1943), Poe (1895), Davis (1914), and Sabin (1919)—which pass an average of 10,000 ships per year.

Lake. Our destination is Manitoulin Island, the world’s largest freshwater island and home of the Ojibwe people, part of the First Nation of Anishinaabe. Coming ashore at Little Current, we’ll board a motorcoach and explore the area’s rich native and nautical history. At Immaculate Conception Church, we’ll learn how the beliefs and customs of the Ojibwe intertwine with those of the Catholic Church. At the Ojibwe Cultural Foundation, we’ll attend a traditional “smudging” ceremony and “pow wow” and tour the museum and art gallery. Back in Little Current, you’ll have the option to return to the ship or stay in town for your own exploration.

Here, we’ll visit the Jesuit mission of “Sainte-Marie among the Hurons,” a living museum that depicts missionary life in the 17th century. Then, we’ll tour the S.S. Keewatin, the last remaining Great Lakes Passenger Liner turned a floating museum, which operated from 1907-1966. After our visit and some free time ashore, we’ll set sail for mighty Lake Huron.

THE HENRY FORD MUSEUMAbout

Just outside of Detroit, Michigan, the Henry Ford Museum was created to document the genius of extraordinary people. Housed in a sweeping, nine-acre, single-floor space with soaring 40-foot ceilings the museum is dedicated to showcasing the finest collection of its kind. The sheer scope and design of the museum is as grand as the vision that inspired it. It’s impossible not to feel a sense of awe as your mind adjusts to the collection’s scale. Exhibits exploring the legacy of American innovators include: Heroes of the Sky, With Liberty & Justice for All, Presidential Limousines, and Made in America.

Sailing from Lake Huron to Lake Erie, the MS Saint Laurent will call on Windsor, Ontario, known as The City of Roses. Here, we’ll cross Ambassador Bridge, a privately owned suspension bridge that connects Windsor with Detroit, Michigan. This bridge is the busiest international trade crossing in North America, supporting $13 billion (USD)

in annual production. Just outside of Detroit, we’ll visit the Henry Ford Museum where highlights include: the limousine that carried President John F. Kennedy on that fateful day in Texas, the bus in which Rosa Parks stood her ground and sparked the Civil Rights movement, and the chair from the Ford Theatre in which Abraham Lincoln was sitting when he was shot. After our tour, we’ll return to the ship and set sail for our next stop, Niagara Falls.

At Niagara Falls, we’ll embark on the famous Hornblower “Voyage of the Falls” for a cruise into the misty spray of Horseshoe Falls. Back on shore, we’ll drive along scenic Niagara Parkway to a charming local restaurant for dinner before rejoining the ship at Port Weller.

This morning, we’ll awaken at the port in Toronto, Ontario. After breakfast, you’ll disembark the MS Saint Laurent and make your way to the airport for your flight home or to the Omni King Edward Hotel (or similar) for your extended tour of this diverse city.

CARTAGENA COLOMBIAColombia’s Beautiful Seaside City

Cartagena is the capital of the Bolívar Department of Colombia and the nation’s fifth largest city. Originally inhabited by indigenous cultures dating as far back as 4000 B.C., the city was settled in by the Spanish 1533 and went on to play a key role in the expansion of the Spanish empire. Its colonial walled city became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984. Several movies have been filmed or set in Cartagena, including 2007’s Love in the Time of Cholera, based on a book of the

same name by Colombian novelist Gabriel García Márquez.

Begin your journey with a 3-day optional Pre-Cruise Extension in the colonial city

of Cartagena, Colombia before you embark.See page 98 for more information

Set sail from colonial Cartagena on a fascinating journey of discovery into the coastal wonders of Colombia, Panama, and Costa Rica. On this

true expedition cruise, we’ll revel in a scenic daytime transit of the Panama Canal and relive the pirate legends of Old Panama City. We’ll take our fleet of Zodiacs ashore to visit with the Kuna Yala in the San Blas Islands and the Emberá of the storied Darién jungle and, with our seasoned expedition leaders, we’ll hike into the wilds of the Osa Peninsula and Manuel Antonio National Park to commune with scarlet macaws, three-toed sloths, capuchin monkeys, and more.

Cartagena, ColombiaDAY 1

Arrive in Cartagena and make your way to the port where you’ll board the MS Saint Laurent. This evening, share cocktails on deck as you watch the sun set over the Caribbean Sea.

San Blas Islands, PanamaDAY 2

This afternoon, we’ll arrive in the San Blas Islands, an archipelago of more than 370 islands and cays of which fewer than 50 are inhabited. Going ashore by Zodiacs, we’ll explore the islands and meet the local people. The San Blas Islands sit off the north coast of the Isthmus of Panama, east of the Panama Canal, and are populated by the self-governing Kuna Yala, one of the most culturally cohesive tribes of indigenous people. Kuna women are renowned for their intricate and very distinctive needlework. Traditional crops are guinea, corn, sugarcane, and coconut. This evening, we’ll gather onboard for a welcome reception, followed by dinner.

Panama Canal CrossingDAY 3

Today, we’ll enjoy a daytime transit of the Panama Canal, a 48-mile-long corridor that connects the Atlantic Ocean (via the Caribbean Sea) to the Pacific Ocean. The canal cuts across the Isthmus of Panama and is a key conduit for international maritime trade. There are locks at each end to lift ships up to Gatun Lake, an artificial lake that sits 85 feet above sea level, which was created to reduce the amount of excavation work required for the canal. The current locks are 110 feet wide. An expansion of the canal, designed to add a third lane of locks, was begun in 2007 and is ongoing.

This tour begins in the afternoon with a scenic drive to the Gamboa Rainforest Resort, a five-star hotel near the historic Chagres River in the midst of the fifty-five-thousand acre Soberanía National Park. After a short welcome reception, we’ll board the Aerial Tram for breathtaking views of the forest. Gliding smoothly through the treetops, we’ll experience the sights and sounds of the tropical rainforest firsthand. After our tram adventure, we’ll enjoy leisure time to visit the butterfly farm, aquarium, and orchid garden before returning to the ship.

Panama City, PanamaDAY 4

This morning we’ll call at Panama City and delve into the victories and tragedies that shaped modern Panama, once known as the “Pearl of the Pacific.” The original city of Panama, built in 1519, was an important trade center for gold and silver and the launching point for expeditions that conquered the Inca of Peru. It was destroyed by the infamous Welsh Captain Henry Morgan in 1671. In 1673, El Casco Viejo (Old Quarter) was built on a peninsula with a system of walls for defense. After our touring these sites, we’ll return to the ship for lunch. The afternoon is yours to enjoy relaxing or exploring on your own.

After a breakfast this morning, we’ll embark on a Zodiac excursion into the Darién jungle, a lush rainforest surrounded by the Sierra de Jungurudo Mountains. Darién is the largest national park in Central America. It includes five distinct wildlife zones and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981. The native people of the Darién jungle—the semi-nomadic Wounaan and Emberá—decorate their bodies with black geometric tattoos. They use dugout canoes to navigate the many rivers and streams of the jungle and still use blowpipes for hunting. During our excursion, we’ll watch for local

Coiba Island, PanamaDAY 6

This afternoon, we’ll arrive in Coiba Island and embark on another exciting excursion. A UNESCO World Heritage Site located 14 miles off the mainland, Coiba is the largest uninhabited tropical forested island in the Americas. Its untouched rainforest is home to the Coiba Island howler monkey and a haven for birdlife and other animals that have largely disappeared from the mainland.

Osa Peninsula, Costa RicaDAY 8

This afternoon, we’ll arrive in Costa Rica’s Golfo Dulce (sweet bay). Golfito, one of only three tropical fjords in the world was once the center of a pre-Columbian culture. Today, it is a sanctuary for marine life such as dolphins, sea turtles, marlin, and red snapper as well as anteaters, three-toed sloths, howler monkeys, white-faced capuchin monkeys, scarlet macaws and hummingbirds. Boarding our Zodiacs, we will cruise along the coast, sighting pelicans and dolphins occasionally along the way.

Arriving at the Osa Peninsula today, we’ll board our Zodiacs and go ashore to access a network of established trails within the reserve that lead through beach, jungle, and forest to a freshwater pool. This forest is home to three species of monkeys, toucans, parrots and other exotic wildlife. Manta rays, dolphins, and olive ridley sea turtles are frequently spotted near the sandy beaches of the peninsula. This evening, back on board, we’ll share stories and photos from another magical day as the sun sets over the Pacific Ocean.

With year-round sunshine and ecosystems that range from cloud forest to cactus scrubland, the Caribbean is home to a dazzling array of wildlife. Beneath the surface of the sea, coral reefs teem with schools of fish and migratory turtles, while whales and dolphins frolic nearby. On shore, over 470 species of birds can be found, including: bright Caribbean flamingos, whistling ducks, scarlet ibis, cachalacas, thick knees, plovers, lapwings, red-bellied macaws, lilac-tailed parrotlets, owls and oil birds, copper-rumped hummingbirds,

in the company of our onboard naturalists and ornithologists, we’ll visit the coral reefs of Grand Turk and the pristine parklands of St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands. We’ll see the church on Nevis where Britain’s Lord Nelson was married. Cruising the Caribbean SeaDAY 2

The Caribbean Sea floor is made up of five basins, separated by underwater ridges and mountain ranges. Water from the Atlantic Ocean enters the Caribbean through the Anegada Passage (between the Lesser Antilles and Virgin Islands) and the Windward Passage (between Cuba and Haiti). After an exhilarating day of cruising, we’ll gather at sunset for a cocktail reception, followed by a sumptuous welcome dinner.

STOREFRONT IN NASSAU

Arrive at Nassau’s Lynden Pindling International Airport and make your way to the port where you’ll board the MS Saint Laurent. This evening, share cocktails on deck as we prepare to set sail on our tropical cruise adventure.

Today we will arrive in the Turks & Caicos and go ashore on Grand Turk. Grand Turk was founded by Bermudan salt rakers three centuries ago and its pastel-colored Bermudan-British colonial architecture makes the island a treasure to visit. The island is six miles long and just over a mile wide with a population of only 6,000. It is blessed with miles of beautiful beaches and is close to several uninhabited cays. While there are many landside attractions to explore such as the Old Prison, Lighthouse Park, and the re-created salt salina, the real beauty of the island lies underwater. Grand Turk is known for the healthy coral reefs that surround the island, stretching almost from the coastline to the 7,000-foot vertical wall just offshore.

St. John, US Virgin IslandsDAY 5

Today we will visit the smallest of the U.S. Virgin Islands, St. John. At the heart of St. John is Virgin Islands National Park, which takes up a full two-thirds of the island’s 20 square miles. In colonial times, much of the island was clear-cut to make room for sugar cane. Today, the park’s conservators help maintain the interior in a pristine and undisturbed state. The park also contains 5,650 acres of submerged land, with an abundance of coral gardens. After today’s expedition, you may choose to visit Trunk Bay, which boasts beautiful underwater coral gardens and one of the world’s most stunning beaches.

In classic, laid back, Caribbean style, the islands of St. Kitts & Nevis sit side by side, separated by “the narrows,” a channel just two miles wide. Geographically they are similar with their volcanic peaks, luscious rainforest descending to flat lands, white sand beaches, and clear blue seas. But each has its own character. Nevis offers gracious, old, sugar plantation houses such as the Hermitage Plantation, Montpellier Golden Rock, and Old Manor. It is the birthplace of Alexander Hamilton, a founding father of the United States. It is also the place Lord Admiral (Horatio) Nelson was stationed as a young sea captain. On our excursion today, we’ll visit a restored plantation house and the Fig Tree Church where Lord Nelson and local widow Fanny Nesbit were married. Afterwards, enjoy free time to visit the beach or take a hike in the rainforest to look for green-back monkeys.

Set between Guadeloupe and Martinique, the island of Dominica has a vibrant rainforest that is home to rare birds, including Sisserou and Jacquot parrots. Streams tumble down mountain slopes and thread fertile valleys on their short route to the sea. Dominica is also home to the last Carib Indians. When Columbus made landfall on his second voyage of discovery, these fierce warriors managed to keep the explorer at bay. Today, this former British possession, independent since 1978, lures visitors from around the world with its unspoiled beauty. As the islanders fondly say, “Après bondie, c’est la terre,” (After god, is the earth).

After breakfast, you’ll disembark the MS Saint Laurent and make your way to the airport for your flight home or to The Hyatt Regency Trinidad (or similar) for your extended stay.

St. George’s, GrenadaDAY 9

Grenada is the Caribbean’s “Isle of Spice” – one of the world’s richest sources of nutmeg, mace, clove, cinnamon, and cocoa. Indeed, the fragrant aroma of spice seems to envelop the island’s emerald hillsides, tropical forests, and sun-drenched beaches. You may remember the island from the 1983 U.S. military intervention. Over two decades later, Grenada is again an ideal vacation spot. Carefully calculated building restrictions ensure that no building here is higher than a coconut palm, which makes St. George’s Harbor is a picture-perfect postcard of an idyllic Caribbean harbor. Our shore excursion today takes us to the island’s Fort Frederick, Grand Etange Lake & Laura’s Spice Garden.

Bequia is part of St. Vincent & the Grenadines, a 32-island chain known for its history of whaling and boat building. Bequia is reminiscent of how the Caribbean was fifty years ago when safe anchorages buzzed with the activity of local fishermen and yachtsmen. It is a paradise of white sand beaches, boutiques selling local crafts, and the local delicacy: lobster pizza. Today we’ll take a drive to the Old Hegg Turtle Sanctuary and the Whaling Museum. Afterwards, you’ll have plenty of time to explore the village of Port Elizabeth and relax on Princess Margaret beach.

INDIVIDUAL PURSUITS

On this tour, we’ll visit Titou Gorge, a natural water-ride created by two hot springs. Thanks to its volcanic origins, Dominica is home to many thermal springs, which contain mineral deposits believed to have therapeutic qualities. Upon arrival at Titou Gorge, we’ll swim through the water at the base of a waterfall to a series of natural rooms and ponds created by high cliff walls and interlacing trees. This narrow gorge was formed as molten lava cooled and split apart. Our tour finishes with a visit to Screw’s Sulphur Spas for a soak in hot sulphur pools under cocoa and nutmeg trees.

INDIVIDUAL PURSUITS

This tour begins with a short drive to De La Grenade Industries. Founded in 1969 De La Grenade was a pioneer in the use of the nutmeg fruit. During our tour, we’ll taste the company’s Nutmeg Syrup, which received a Grand Gold Medal from Monde Selection in Brussels. Next, we’ll drive to the Westerhall Estate, one of Grenada’s leading rum distilleries. Founded in the late 1700s, the estate originally grew sugar cane, cocoa, and limes. In 1862, they purchased a sugar cane processing machine and began producing and selling rum. During our tour, we’ll sample some of the distillery’s most exotic rums.

CLOSE UP ON THE ORINOCO RIVEROne of the few unspoiled rivers of the world

Traveling over 1,300 miles through Colombia and Venezuela, the Orinoco River is one of the longest rivers in South America. Its mouth, at the Atlantic Ocean, was sighted by Christopher Columbus in 1498. The source of the river – near the Brazilian border – wasn’t reached by non-indigenous people until 1951. Today, the Orinoco River is home to a stunning array of flora and fauna and a diverse population of native cultures and modern South Americans.

The Orinoco River is one of the longest rivers in South America. Along with its many tributaries, it is the major transportation system for eastern and interior Venezuela. Flowing from the mountains on the border with Brazil, the river broadens onto a 200-mile wide delta, called the Delta Amacuro, prior to meeting with the Atlantic Ocean. Today, we will embark on a Zodiac excursion in search of wildlife such as sloths, giant otters, river dolphins, colorful toucans, and macaws. This evening, we’ll gather for a festive welcome reception, followed by a sumptuous dinner.

Orinoco River, Curiapo, VenezuelaDAY 3

This morning, we’ll board the Zodiacs for a visit to the village of Curiapo, home to a group of Warao (people of canoes), an indigenous population whose remote location largely protected them from early European colonization. There are thought to be as many as 20,000 Warao in Venezuela’s Orinoco Delta.

WATER BUFFALO, ORINOCO RIVER

This morning, we’ll go ashore to snorkel, swim, and explore this beautiful island. From the first European explorers to today, Tobago has changed hands over 22 times. It has been occupied by the English, Dutch, French, Spanish, Latvian Courlanders, and a host of pirates and buccaneers. In 1889, Tobago was made a

ward of Trinidad, which it remained until 1962 when Trinidad & Tobago became an independent commonwealth, and then a republic in 1976. While Trinidad is the bustling commercial center of the republic, Tobago is known for its natural environment and a slower pace of life. It boasts the oldest protected rainforest in the western hemisphere, beautiful beaches and waterfalls, and a colorful history including the restored Fort King George. This 18th-century hilltop fortification was named after King George III. Today the officers’ quarters host a museum display of maps from the 1600s, Amerindian artifacts, and watercolor paintings of the island by Sir William Young.

Located about 25 miles from the mainland, Venezuela’s mountainous Margarita Island offers wide white beaches and access to windsurfing, golf, and scuba diving. Isla Margarita is actually two islands connected in the middle by a mangrove-filled lagoon called La Restinga National Park. Today we’ll explore the park or, if you choose, you can take the optional full-day excursion: a flightseeing tour to Canaima over Angel Falls.

Kralendijk, BonaireDAY 9

Bonaire was part of the Netherland Antilles until 2010 and the Dutch influence remains very strong. It was here that the Dutch West India company harvested salt, which attracted scores of pink flamingos. This afternoon’s excursion will take us to the Grottomeer saltpans to see the flamingos, the slave huts, and Rincon, the original Spanish settlement. Finally, we’ll visit Seroelargu, the highest point on the island, to take in the sweeping panoramic views.

Isla Blanquilla, VenezuelaDAY 8

This morning, we’ll go ashore on this uninhabited island. Named for its stunning white sand beaches, the island’s flora and fauna include: iguanas, wild donkeys, and numerous varieties of cacti.

This unforgettable full-day active tour includes a stunning sightseeing flight roundtrip from Isla Margarita over magnificent Angel Falls (the highest waterfall in the world) to Canaima, where you’ll enjoy a boat cruise on the Canaima Lagoon and a hike to thundering Sapo Falls (Frog Falls). Angel Falls got their name from Jimmie Angel, a U.S. aviator who was the first person to fly over the falls. The indigenous name for the falls is Kerepakupai Vená, meaning “waterfall of the deepest place.”

Santa Marta, Colombia’s first Spanish settlement, is the capital city of the department of Magdalena. Founded in 1525 by the Spanish conqueror Rodrigo de Bastidas, it is the oldest remaining city in Colombia. Located northeast of Cartagena, between the Santa Marta Mountains and the Caribbean Sea, this pretty city is popular for its history, colonial architecture, beaches, and nearby nature reserves. The mountain range is second in height only to the Andes. After a stimulating day exploring on shore, we’ll gather for cocktails, followed by a sumptuous farewell dinner.

This tour begins with a short drive to the Ostrich Farm where we’ll board a safari truck for a guided tour and learn how an ostrich develops from an egg to the largest, fastest running bird in the world. After the farm tour, we’ll drive to the famous Hato Caves, a series of old coral reefs that emerged from the sea when the island was formed. These “living” caves have centuries-old stalagmites and stalactites that are still being formed, one drop at a time. On a guided tour of the caves, we’ll walk along gently sloping trails to different chambers, past still pools to a freshwater waterfall.

Rugged Osa Peninsula juts out into the Pacific Ocean on the southwestern side of Costa Rica. A third of the peninsula is protected by the “biologically intense” Corcovado National Park, one of the few large lowland tropical rainforests in the world to have escaped the ravages of the logging industry. Cabo Matapalo, on the southern tip of the peninsula, attracts surfers from around the world. Hikes into the virgin tropical rainforest invite eco-tourists to see protected species such as: Baird’s tapirs, rare harpy eagles, blue morpho

butterflies, sloths, scarlet macaws, jaguars, and more.

Witness the rugged natural beauty of Costa Rica’s Osa Peninsula. Discover exotic wildlife in Panama’s Coiba National Park and in the dense Darién jungle. Search for the blue anole lizard on Isla Gorgona. Explore Ecuador’s Machalilla National Park, revel in the whales breeching just off shore, and delve into the pre-Inca history of Peru.

San José (Puerto Caldera), Costa Rica (Embarkation)

DAY 1

Arrive at the airport in San José, Costa Rica and make your way to the port where we’ll board the refined MS Saint Laurent. Gather on deck for cocktails and the sunset as we set sail for the Osa Peninsula.

Osa Peninsula, Costa RicaDAY 2

This morning, we’ll embark on our first Zodiac expedition in the Osa Peninsula, an immense biological reserve with a mix of rocky coves and high canopy forest. The pristine rainforests and the rugged natural beauty of the Osa Peninsula make this region among the most beautiful areas in Costa Rica. National Geographic has called it “the most biologically intense place on Earth.” Local fauna include a few of Costa Rica’s most endangered species: Baird’s tapirs, jaguars, harpy eagles, red-backed squirrel monkeys, and white-lipped peccaries. Watch for skittering water lizards on the stream lets as well as turquoise cotingas, black-cheeked ant-tanagers, and mangrove hummingbirds flashing through the greenery. Back on board this evening, join us for cocktails followed by a festive welcome dinner.

Coiba Island, PanamaDAY 3

Today we’ll call upon 192-square-mile Coiba Island, home to sugary white beaches, clear cyan-hued waters, dense forests, and an abundance of exotic natural wonders. Located about 20 miles off the Pacific coast of Panama, Coiba National Park was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005. It includes as many as 38 islands and one of the largest coral reefs on the Pacific coast of the Americas, which teems with whale and tiger sharks, sea turtles, angel rays, and massive schools of fish. From 1919 until 2004 this remote island served as a penal colony with a reputation for brutal conditions, extreme torture, and death. Its dark history inadvertently led to the preservation of the island’s rainforest ecosystem. Today, Coiba is the largest uninhabited tropical forested island in the Americas. Eighty percent of its forests are primary and virtually untouched by humans, making them a haven for birds and mammals found nowhere else on earth, including several species that have largely disappeared from the mainland. Accessible by permit only, you’ll have the chance today to go ashore with your expedition team in search of scarlet macaws, crested eagles, and endemic subspecies such as the Coiba Island howler monkey, the Coiba agouti, and the Coiba spinetail.

Cruising the Colombian CoastDAY 5

Colombia is believed to be the second most bio- diverse country in the world, just after Brazil. About 10 percent of the Earth’s species live here, including nearly 2,000 species of birds and the olinguito, the first new carnivorous species found in the Americas in over 35 years.

Isla Gorgona, ColombiaDAY 6

Just off the Pacific Coast of Colombia, the hilly island of Gorgona features a cloud-shrouded mountain that overlooks deserted beaches and the open sea. The island’s first inhabitants left archaeological remains that date back to 1300 A.D. In the 1700s, the island served as a refuge for pirates and privateers. In the years from 1959-1984 it was used as an Alcatraz-like prison, housing Colombia’s most dangerous criminals. Today, the island is a National Natural Park and ecotourism center. We’ll explore the dense tropical rainforest in search of unique species such as the blue anole lizard, sloths, white- headed capuchins, brown boobies, and red-legged honeycreepers.

Manta, EcuadorDAY 7

Today, we’ll cruise along the coast to Manta, Ecuador. A trading post in pre-Columbian times, Manta is currently known for tuna fishing and tourism. The city’s most visited beaches include El Murciélago, Santa Marianita, San Lorenzo, and Barbasquillo. The nearby town of Montecristi, founded in the early 17th century, is known for its wickerwork weaving and as the original birthplace of the Panama Hat, which, despite its name, was historically produced in Ecuador.

Darién National Park, PanamaDAY 4

After a light breakfast this morning, we’ll embark on an excursion into the Darién jungle, a lush rainforest surrounded by the Sierra de Jungurudo Mountains. Darién is the largest national park in Central America. It includes five distinct wildlife zones and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981. The native people of the Darién jungle – the semi-nomadic Wounaan and Emberá – decorate their bodies with black geometric tattoos and use dugout canoes to navigate the jungle’s many rivers and streams. During our explorations, we’ll watch for local wildlife, including: weaverbirds, yellow-bellied great kiskadees, red-cheeked woodpeckers, tapirs, sloths, capybaras, and anteaters.

“Found in Ecuador’s Machalilla National Park, the blue-footed booby has no natural fear of humans. Its name comes from the Spanish word for clown (bobo), presumably because it is a seabird that is clumsy on land. Its blue feet play an important role in mating rituals.

MACHALILLA NATIONAL PARKAbout

Machalilla National Park was established in 1979 and named for a prehistoric culture that lived in the area as far back as 1800 BC. Nearby archaeological excavations have revealed advanced ceramics techniques and the Machalilla are credited with having invented the stirrup spouted jug. Today, the park encompasses 60,000 hectares, two-thirds of which are tropical dry forest, fog forest, coastal scrub, beaches, islands and islets. The final third is ocean and a popular breeding ground for humpback whales. The islands and shorelines provide fertile feeding for frigates, brown pelicans, waved albatross, and boobies. Inland wildlife include black howler monkeys, poison arrow frogs, armadillos, brocket and white-tail deer, and more than 270 species of birds.

This morning we’ll go ashore for an excursion into Ecuador’s Machalilla National Park. Located along the Pacific coast near the fishing village of Puerto Lopéz, the park offers: beaches, fog forest, dry forest, small islands, and two larger islands Salango and Isla de la Plata, named for a legendary hoard of silver left by Sir Francis Drake. In 1990, the park was named an internationally important wetland under the Ramsar Convention. Wildlife includes armadillos, monkeys, and more than 270 species of birds. Machalilla National Park is the only waved albatross habitat outside of the Galapágos Islands.

Cruising the Ecuadorian CoastDAY 9

Humpback whales, found off the coast of Ecuador from June to October, feed in polar waters in the summer and migrate to tropical and subtropical waters to breed and give birth in the winter. Today, we will enjoy cruising and be in the perfect location for spotting this migration along the coast.

Salaverry (Trujillo), Peru (overnight)DAY 10

Located in the Andean foothills, Salaverry is the gateway to two fascinating pre-Inca historical sites. The ancient Chimu capital of Chan Chan, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is considered the largest adobe city in the world. The Huacas del Sol y de la Luna (Temples of the Sun and Moon) were built by the Moche and feature a unique narrative of human sacrifice. Today, we’ll explore the rich tradition, religion, art, agriculture, and architecture of these two sites.

Then we’ll stop for a local specialty snack before touring the San Francisco Monastery and its underground catacombs, which served as a burial place until 1808 and as a secret passageway to the tribunal during the Peruvian Holy Inquisition. Rediscovered in 1943, the catacombs contain as many as 25,000 crypts and have survived several earthquakes. Continuing on, we’ll stop at Larco Herrera Museum to view a private collection of pre-Columbian art and visit the vault that safeguards precious pieces of gold, silver, and semiprecious stones. Finally, we’ll stop at El Parque del Amor, a beautiful lookout on the cliffs of Miraflores overlooking the Pacific Ocean, before returning to the hotel. You’ll have the rest of the afternoon and evening free to enjoy an optional tour, such as Taste of Lima, and sample Lima’s many riches, including world-class restaurants and lively nightclubs. After breakfast at the hotel the next morning, enjoy sightseeing on your own until it’s time to make your way to the airport for your flight home.

HAIMARK CARESSupporting Operation Homefront

At Haimark, we understand the importance of partnering with others to protect the places we visit and work together toward a better world. To that end, we created Haimark Cares, which identifies reputable organizations whose causes are near and dear to our hearts and to the hearts of our cherished guests. For the MS Saint Laurent 2015/2016 summer and winter seasons in North, Central & South America, a portion of every cruise fare will

be donated to Operation Homefront, which supports military families and wounded warriors with emergency financial aid, housing assistance, and a support network for families and caregivers. While most of our service members say they were just doing their jobs, we are honored that they served us. And we are pleased to play a small role in enabling Operation Homefront to serve them in return.

The Forgotten Battle is on the Homefront.
