DREW’S DOUBLE-DOUBLES

NSIC RANKINGS

•MSUM sophomore point guard Natalie Van Wyhe is now tied for second in the conference in assist-to-turnover ratio at 1.9, which is also 33rd-best in the nation. She has 79 assists compared to 42 turnovers in 21 games played this season. Van Wyhe also ranks tied

for fourth in the conference at 3.8 assists per game. Over the Dragons’ last 12 games, Van Wyhe has averaged 4.6 assists per game. Van Wyhe had a career-high nine assists in the Dragons’ win over Mary in December and has four games of five assists or more already this season.

•The MSUM women’s basketball team set a new season-high with 56 rebounds in the win over Augus-tana on Feb. 7. The Dragons had a commanding 56-35 edge on the glass over the Vikings, marking the second time this season MSUM

has had a rebounding margin of plus-20 or better. Two Dragons had double-digit rebounds in the game: redshirt freshman Drew Sannes (career-high 13) and junior forward Savanna Handevidt (11). The 56-rebound output helped MSUM improve its rebounding margin to +5.8, which is second-best in the NSIC behind Northern State. The Drag-ons are also third in total rebounds per game. MSUM has had 11 double-digit rebounding performances this season, led by sophomore guard Morgan Banasik, Handevidt and junior forward Heather Strese, above left, with three perfor-mances each.

• Four different MSUM players have recorded two double doubles this season: juniors Savanna Handevidt and Heather Strese, sophomore Morgan Banasik and redshirt freshman Drew Sannes. Sannes was the latest Dragon to accom-plish the feat, doing it in back-to-

back games on the road last weekend. She had 16 points and 12 rebounds in the 81-60 loss at No. 22 Wayne State on Feb. 6 and followed with career-highs of 17 points and 13 rebounds in the 86-77 Dragon win over Augustana on Feb. 7. Sannes is now second on the team at 5.6 rebounds per game and is fifth on the team in scoring at 6.7 points per game. MSUM is tied for second in the NSIC (behind Concordia-St. Paul, which has five) with four different play-ers earning double-doubles this season.

Team •Free-throw percentage, third (77.3 percent). MSUM hit 34-of-43 at-tempts (79.1 percent) on the road.•Rebounding margin, second (5.8) and total rebounding, tied for fourth (41.0). The Dragons outrebounded both opponents last weekend.

•Scoring defense, seventh (66.7).Individual•Free-throw percentage, Natalie Van Wyhe, 3rd (88.6 per-cent).•Three-point field goals made, Meghan Roehrich, second (2.2): Roehrich drained four three-pointers in the win over Augie.•Scoring, Meghan Roehrich, 2nd (18.3): Roehrich has led the Dragons in scoring in 15 of 22 games this season.•Assist/Turnover Ratio, Natalie Van Wyhe, tied for 3rd (1.9).•Assists, Natalie Van Wyhe, tied for 4th (3.8): Van Wyhe is averaging 4.6 assists in the Dragons’ last 12 games.•Blocked shots, Drew Sannes, 6th (1.7): Sannes had three blocks in the win at Augie.

•On Feb. 7, MSUM trailed Augus-tana 53-45 with 8:16 left before its offense caught fire over the fi-nal minutes. The Dragons scored 41 points in 8:16 to rally from that deficit to take an 86-77 win over the Vikings. That surge was sparked by seven 3-pointers

hit by four different Dragons. Sophomore guard Morgan Banasik, left, had 14 points in that span while junior guard Meghan Roehrich had 13. The 41-point outburst was part of a 58-point second half for MSUM, which is the highest output of any half for the Dragons this season.

•Freshman Cassidy Thorson had one of the best games of her young Dragon career during MSUM’s 86-77 win at Augustana on Feb. 7. Thor-son finished with a career-high 11 points and set career-highs for field goals made (four), assists (four), and three-pointers made (three).

Thorson also set a career-high with 20 minutes played in the game. Her two big three-pointers were a key part of MSUM’s 41-24 run over the final eight minutes of the game. In 22 games this season, Thorson is averaging 11.9 minutes per game and has averages of 2.1 points and 2.3 rebounds per game. She also has 19 assists.

COACHING BIOThe 2014-15 season will be Karla Nelson’s 15th as head coach of the Minnesota State University Moorhead women’s basketball team. During her 14 years as head coach, MSUM has been a model of consistent success.

Nelson has 14 straight winning seasons as MSUM’s mentor. The Dragons have qualified for the conference tournament for 15 consecutive years -- having never missed a conference tournament -- including in all 14 years of Nelson’s tenure. The fastest coach in MSU Moorhead basketball history to reach the 200-win plateau, Nelson has accumulated a record of 240-159 in 14 seasons.

Also included in the success are three trips to the NCAA Division II post-season play, two national statistical titles, conference and region Coach of the Year endorsements and a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference championship. Nelson is fourth among NSIC coaches in total wins at their respective schools.

Nelson has also coached 32 all-conference honorees in 14 seasons. She led Angie Jetvig to four All-American teams including two consecutive Daktronics All-American honors in 2011 and 2012. Nelson also helped Megan Rettke and Alison Nash-Gerlach to second team Daktronics All-American honors in 2010.

In 2013-14, MSUM finished 16-11, highlighted by wins over regional qualifiers Wayne State (ranked No. 8 at the time) and Concordia-St. Paul. Zabel was named to the All-NSIC first team while senior forward Megan Strese was named to the All-NSIC second team. Both players surpassed 1,000 points for their careers during the season; Strese left MSUM ranked 11th all-time in scoring at 1,228 points while Zabel finished in 15th at 1,115 points. Senior guard Haley Thomforde also finished her career fifth in assists under Nelson’s tutelage.

The 2012-13 season saw a young Dragon team with just two seniors earn a 16-12 mark and a first-round win in the NSIC tournament. MSUM also earned a win over No. 17-ranked Augustana, which ended up qualifying for the NCAA Division II Final Four. Also in 2012-13, senior Marisa Yernatich set the new career three-point record at MSUM, while junior Megan Strese earned first-team All-NSIC honors. Zabel was an All-NSIC second-team selection.

The first coach at MSUM to debut with back-to-back winning campaigns, Nelson and the Dragons made their first appearance in the NCAA Division II North Central Regional in 2004-05, returned in 2006-07, and qualified for a third time in 2008-09.

The 2006-07 team reached the 20-win plateau for the fifth time in program history and made a serious run for the NSIC title, placing second in the league tournament and suffered an NCAA Tournament opening round loss to the University of North Dakota.

In 2008-09, the Dragons were ranked as high as 13th in the nation, after going on an 11-0 run to open the season. The season ended in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, after picking up the first post-season win in program history. Nelson prodded her first club to a 15-12 overall record in 2000-01, the first winning season at MSUM in six years that also included a NSIC playoff invitation. In 2004-05 Nelson and the Dragons claimed their first NSIC outright title, cracked the nation’s Top-25 for the first time and received a NCAA Division II regional tournament invitation, the first time in the Head Coach’s career. MSUM finished 24-7 overall and set a Dragon single season record victories. Nelson was saluted as the NSIC Coach of the Year and Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Region 7 Coach of the Year as well. The WBCA Region 7 Coach of the Year honor was her second, the first coming during the 2002-03 season.

Nelson served six seasons as the Dragons’ No. 1 assistant from 1994-2000. When Jean Roise resigned in March of 2000, MSUM Director of Athletics Dr. Katy Wilson quickly promoted Nelson to the top post..

A recreation major, Nelson completed an undergraduate degree from North Dakota and a Master’s Degree from North Dakota State University in Health Education. Nelson was a member of the coaching staff at East Grand Forks and Grand Forks Public Schools for three years before moving to MSUM.

COACHING RESUME• Karla Nelson was promoted to head coach in March of 2000, becoming the 12th Women’s Basketball Coach in the 46-year history of the program. • 2014-15 is her 21st year in coaching at MSUM and the 15th as a head coach.• The fastest coach in MSUM basketball history to reach 200 wins.• Nelson served as a coach at East Grand Forks and Grand Forks Public Schools for three years prior to arriving at MSUM.• Played four seasons of basketball at the University of North Dakota, twice being honored as UND’s Best Defensive Player.
