If you want to learn more about what it means to be a man: “XY” by Joel Stepanek (Available online soon!) Book Synopsis: XY explores man ’s call to create, cul!vate, and protect, highligh!ng Jesus as the ul!mate example of manhood.

Reasons to Read: Joel understands what it means to be a man seeking God ’s heart while juggling the diffi-cul!es of living out masculinity in today ’s culture. He includes insigh#ul and o$en amusing stories about his own journey, highlights vices and virtues that target the heart of a man in a unique way, and desig-nates a sec!on for prayers that promote con!nued spiritual growth.

If you desire to understand suffering: “Can You Drink the Cup?” By Henri Nouwen Book Synopsis: Using the imagery of holding, li$ing, and drinking from a cup, Henri Nouwen explores our call to support one another in both our joys and sufferings.

Reasons to Read: Henri Nouwen is hands -down a prolific spiritual writer. He offers unique insight into the spiritual life in all of his wri!ngs, most significantly in “Can You Drink the Cup?” Drawing from Jesus ’ ques!on to James and John — “Are you able to drink the cup that I am to drink? ” — Nouwen helps us un-derstand suffering be'er in this world that is constantly full of suffering. Nouwen gives us not only a sense of consola!on but also offers advice in responding to injus!ce.

If you love a good fantasy novel: “The Chronicles of Narnia” by C.S. Lewis Book Synopsis: “The Chronicles of Narnia” is a fic!onal series that follows four siblings when they step through a magical wardrobe into Narnia: a world they could ’ve never dreamed of.

Reasons to Read: Not only is this series beau!fully wri'en and easy to read, it is chalk -full of intrigue and rich with Chris!an symbolism. This is the perfect series to read along with someone else as there is a bunch of really good concepts to unpack. It is also the perfect summer read as there is loads of !me to read through all seven books.

If you crave a summer rom -com: “To All the Boys I ’ve Loved Before” by Jenny Han Book Synopsis: “To All the Boys I ’ve Loved Before” follows Laura Song through a hilarious journey of find-ing love in unlikely places and the power of healing, friendship, and family.

Reasons to Read: In short, I ’d define this book as a “breath of fresh air.” It is a quintessen!al love story about a high school romance, yet deep and real and raw. The storyline is morally good yet not at all corny (!!) It is both honest and cap!va!ng. It is THE PERFECT beach/poolside summer read.

If you want to be challenged to understand racism: “The Hate U Give” by Angie Thomas Book Synopsis: “The Hate U Give” follows Starr Carter as she navigates l ife a$er witnessing her friend get shot in an alterca!on with the police. . (TO BE CONTINUED NEXT BULLETIN)

19° SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Reflection in preparation for next weekend’s Gospel

Tickets booked, packing list double-checked, itinerary set - how do you know you're prepared for a trip? Being ready requires plenty of practical preparation. Do we give the same care to our spiritual preparedness? "Your Father is pleased to give you the kingdom," Jesus tells us. In this Sunday's Gospel, Jesus reminds us to have the right attitude for the gifts and callings he wants to give us! Clear out your clutter! "Where your treasure is, there also will your heart be." Jesus reminds the disciples that earthly standards of security and success will wear out in time. If our lives are structured around values that don't align with the kingdom of God, we'll miss opportunities to receive God. If we're so con-cerned with our child's success in sports that we miss Sunday Mass for their tournaments, we're missing out receiving the sacra-ments and building a consistent community of faith. If our quest for the promotion takes us away from family commitments, we won't be able to fully receive the love intended in our closest rela-tionships. Set faith-based priorities. "Blessed are those servants whom the master finds vigilant on his arrival." Our conflicting commit-ments can cause any routine to slip from time to time. All the more reason to make sure faith is a priority. Pray as a family be-fore meals. Bring your children regularly to the sacrament of con-fession. Make room in the schedule for faith enrichment activities offered by your parish. Volunteer once a month. "At an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come." When will the call come to care for an ailing parent? To take on a new leadership position? God speaks to us through the circumstances of our lives. He calls each of us to greater love, sometimes in very con-crete ways. This week, take some time to consider: Will you be ready?

Agosto 11, 2019 19° DOMINGO DE TIEMPO ORDINARIO
