2011-12: Was the 55-meter hurdles champion at the OVC Indoor Championships (2/25) with a time of 7.99 … placed sixth in the 55 meter dash with a PR time of 7.23 at the OVC Championships … part of a 4x400 team that placed sixth at the OVC meet with a time of3:55.23 … set the school record in the 60-meter hurdles at the Alex Wilson Invite (3/3) with a time of 8.65 … part of a 4x100 team that set the school record in the 4x100 and also was OVC outdoor champions with a time of 45.63 … finished second at the OVC Outdoor Championships (5/5) in the 100-meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 13.91 … also had a PR in the long jump (5.38m) at the OVC meet

Before MSU: A transfer from Prairie View A&M in the Southwestern Athletic Conference…has personal bests of 8.68 in the 60m hurdles, 7.85 in the 60 and 5.55m (18’2.5”) in the long jump with the Panthers…earned a Southwest Athletic Conference 100 hurdles title and was third at the SWAC meet in the long jump…participated in track & field at Kemp where she ran the 100 hurdles in 14.25….claimed a state championship in the 100 hurdles as a freshman and a junior…earned regional championships in the 100 hurdles for three years and the 300 hurdles for two years…also claimed district championships in the 100 and 300 hurdles, long jump and triple jump for three years…also participated in volleyball and cheerleading as a prep.

CROSS COUNTRY2012: Ran a career-best 5K time of 18:35.95 at the OVC Championships (10/27) … PR’d in the 6K with a time of 23:25.57 at the NCAA Regional (11/9)

2011: Opened the year with a 46th-place finish (20:00.98) at the Memphis Twilight…ran in 19:40.95 to finish 13th at the SIUE XC Challenge…placed 58th at the Greater Louisville Classic with a time of 19:15.05…crossed the finish line in 19:27.37, to place 28th, at the Evansville Invitational…ran a season-best time of 19:12.53 en route to a 25th-place finish at the OVC Championship...completed the 6k course at the NCAA Southeast Regional in 24:09.0, to place 204th.

Before MSU: A four-year member of the varsity cross country and track & field teams at Mahomet-Seymour…set her school’s record in cross country, finishing the 3-mile course in 17:38 as a senior…also helped her 4x400 team set an Illinois indoor record…finished in the top-10 in three events in the 2011 Illinois outdoor meet…was 4th in the 4x400 (school record), 5th in the 4x800 and 6th in the 800 (2:16)…earned all-conference honors as a senior and qualified for the state meet three of her four seasons.

2011-12: Finished second at the OVC Indoor Championships (2/25) in the high jump with a PR of 5-6 … also PR’d in the meet in the shot put (40’-1.5”) and finished 8th … had a personal-best jump of 17-5.5 at the SIU Invite (2/4) … placed third in the high jump at the OVC Outdoor Championships (5/5) with a PR leap of 5-6 … also record career-bests at the OVC outdoor meet in the long jump (17-8) and shot put (40-1.25) threw a PR in the javelin at the Hilltopper Relays (4/14) of 99-5.

Before MSU: A four-year member of the varsity track & field teams at McHenry East…earned All-Fox Valley Conference honors all four years...finished in the top-10 in the high jump (outdoor) all four seasons, including a second-place finish in 2010...was also a top-10 finisher in the long jump for three seasons…claimed the state indoor high jump title in 2011, with a jump of 1.72m (5’8”)…set the school record in the high jump (outdoor) as a junior, clearing 1.75m (5’9”)…also participated in basketball and volleyball where she earned all-conference honors.

Mahomet, Ill. • Mahomet-Seymore2011-12: Sixth-place finish at the OVC Indoor Championships (2/25) in the 4x400 … had a career-best in the 600 (1:41.03) and the high jump (5-6) at the Saluki Fast Start (12/3) … ran a PR in the 400 of 1:01.57 at the SIU Invite (2/4) … fifth in the high jump at the OVC Outdoor Championships (5/5) with a jump of 5-2 … also ran a PR in the 400 hurdles at the championships with a time of 1:06.05 … PR’d at the Shamrock Invite (3/16-17) in the 4x400 and 4x800 with times of 4:09.38 and 9:38.42, respectively.

2010-11: Ran the 60 hurdles, Distance Medley Realy and 4x400 relay and also competed in the high jump during the indoor season...set individual bests of 11.07 in the 60 hurdles and 1.65m (5’5”) in the high jump...competed in the 400, 400 hurdles, Distance Medley Relay, 4x400 relay, high jump and javelin during the outdoor season...ran the 400 in 1:00.46...took fourth in the 400 hurdles and the high jump at the OVC Championship with season bests of 1:04.62 and 1.63m (5’4.25”)...also had a season-best of 20.15m (66’1”) in the javelin...was one of 12 participants for the Racers in the Outdoor OVC Championship that helped the team finish fifth.

Before MSU: Attended Mahomet-Seymour High School in Mahomet, Ill….competed in jumps, sprints, and hurdles…helped the team to an Illinois State Title in the indoor 4x400 relay as a season…the team broke the school and PTT record in the 4x400 relay that same season with a time of 58.9 seconds…also participated in cheerleading and cross country while a prep.

Personal: Born Katherine Elizabeth Forshey, Jan. 1, 1992 in Mahomet, Ill….daughter of Kris Forshey…has one brother, Matt (25), and one sister, Jessica (23)…majoring in animal technology/equine science option.

TRACK & FIELD2011-12: Had a very strong track season for the Racers ... placed sixth at the OVC Outdoor Championships in the 3K steeple with a time of 11:50.38 ... PR’d in the 3K steeplechase at the Louisville Twilight (5/11) with a time of 11:12.80 ... also had a PR at the OVC Indoor Championships in the 5K with a time of 18:43.16

CROSS COUNTRY2012: Ran a career-best in the 5K and finished 61st overall at the OVC Championships (10/27) … also a had a PR in the 6K in 2012, running a time of 24:09.7 at the Pre-NCAAs (10/13)

2011: Ran a season-high time of 20:02.89 in the 5k at the SIUE Challenge (9/16) … ran a time of 20:32 in the 5k at the OVC Championships (10/29) ... placed 88th, with a time of 21:02.19, in the season-opening Memphis Twilight…ran her best time of the season at the SIUE XC Challenge, placing 22nd at 20:02.89…finished the OVC Championship in 20:32.81, to place 52nd.

Before MSU: A transfer from UNC Greensboro that will participate in both cross country and track & field…will be a sophomore for cross country and indoor track and a junior during the outdoor campaign…took sixth at the Southern Conference Outdoor Championship in the 3,000 Steeplecase in a time of 11:21.12…as a member of the Meade High School track & field team she took third at the Maryland State meet in the 3200 (11:26) and was fourth in the 1600 (5:19.43) as a junior.

Personal: Born Anna Deloise Grimes, Dec. 27, 1990 in Fort Meade, Md....daughter of Jeffrey and Shelia Grimes...has one brother; Brandon (16) and two sisters; Jessica (23) and Savanna (12)...majoring in sociology.

TRACK & FIELD2011-12: Finished fourth at the OVC Outdoor Championships (5/5) with a time of 39:04.28 in the 10K ... also finished seventh at the OVCs in the 5K with a time of 18:43.70 ... had a PR time of 17:44.20 in the event

2010-11: Participated in the 3,000 and the Distance Medley Relay during the indoor season...finished the season with a top time of 10:43.27 (3,000)...during the outdoor campaign she competed in the 800 (2:25.76), 1,500 (4:59.11), 3,000 (10:40.45), 5,000 (18:47.97), 10,000 (39:32.02), Distance Medley Relay and 4x400 relay...was on of 12 participants for MSU in the outdoor OVC Championship and helped the team finish fifth.

Cross Country2012: Recorded the ninth- and 12th-fastest 6K times in program history in 2012 at the NCAA Regional (11/9) with a time of 22:32.50 and the Pre-NCAAs (10/13) with a time of 22:37.4, respectively … ran a career-best 5K time at the OVC Championships (10/27) with a time of 18:11.86

2011: Led the Racers with a 22nd-place finish at the Memphis Twilight with a time of 19:16.78…named adidas OVC Runner of the Week Sept. 6…placed 20th at the SIUE XC Challenge, with a finish of 19:54.63…scored a season-best time of 18:28.89 with a 13th-place finish at the Greater Louisville Classic…completed the OVC Championship in 19:35.75 to place 32nd…ran 22:30.8 at the 6k NCAA Southeast Regional to place 109th...the time was good for the third-best time on a 6k course in MSU history.

Before MSU: Was a two-year member of the Central Arizona Community College cross country and track & field teams...earned All-American honors in both sports in each of her seasons...ran a top time in the 5K of 17:41...ran cross country and track & field at Prospect High School in San Jose, Calif.

Personal: Born Rebecca Hbetamu, April 14, 1990, in Ethopia....daughter of Shewate and Hbetamu...graduated with an associates degree in general studies from Central Arizona Community College in 2010...majoring in integrated studies.

TRACK & FIELD2011-12: Ran an indoor season best time of 18:29.41 in the 5k at the OVC Championships (2/25) … ran a season-high in the 3,000-meters at the Shamrock Invite (3/17) with a time of 11:20.75 ... during the indoor season she ran a 3,000-meter PR time of 10:30 at the Kentucky McCravy Memorial (1/28)

CROSS COUNTRY2012: Ran a 5K time of 20:35.84 and finished 52nd at the Memphis Twilight (9/1) … had a time of 25:24.84 in the 6K at the Commodore Classic (9/15)

2011: Posted a time of 19:32.93 at the Memphis Twilight, to place 31st…ran a season-best 18:49.69 at the Greater Louisville Classic, to finish 31st…scored a time of 19:18.00 at the Evansville Invitational, for 25th place…finished 29th at the OVC Championship with a time of 19:29.01...completed the 6k course at the NCAA Southeast Regional in 23:18.6, to place 165th.

Before MSU: Helped Dallas Lutheran claim the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools Division 3A Cross Country State Championship in 2010 in her first season…also won the individual cross country state title as a senior in 2010…had three first-place wins during the regular season, while individually finishing in the top-10 in every meet…helped the team to the state runner-up finishes in both indoor and outdoor track & field in 2010, while finishing in the top-5 in her events in every meet…claimed the Texas State 1600 and 3200 as a senior with personal-best times...also participated in soccer as a prep.

2011-12: Named 2012 Female Track Athlete of the Year in the OVC and Athlete of the OVC Outdoor Championships … scored 23.5 points to lead the Racers to a third-place finish at the championships … set an OVC record in the 200m at the outdoor championships with a time of 23.33, winning the event … also won the 100m with a time of 11.28 which was a new stadium record … was part of the team that set the school record in the 4x100m relay with a time of 45.63 … finished sixth at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 100 ... made it to the semifinals of the 200 … competed at the United States Track and Field Olympic Trials … ran a time of 23.10 at the trials in the semifinals of the 200 … was part of rare company at the trials as she was one of five athletes of the 18 semifinalists that were still student-athletes, the other 13 competitors run fulltime … also competed in the semifinals of the 100 … set the school record during the indoor season in the 60 and the 200 with times of 7.42 and 23.66, respectively

Jenny Severns joined the Racers in July of 2010 as the head coach for cross country and track & field at Murray State. “I am very excited about the opportunity to work with the athletes and staff at Murray State University,” said Severns. “We have all the tools necessary to succeed and I cannot wait to take the program to the next level.” “Jenny brings good experience and a commitment to developing the whole person,” said Matt Kelly, Associate AD for Internal Operations. “Her student-athletes have excelled in the community, classroom, and in their sport. Her style and ideals fit very nicely into what we want to do here at Murray State.” In her first season at the helm of the women’s cross country team, Severns guided the women’s cross country team to a third-place finish at the OVC Championship and saw her first runner earn All-OVC honors. Senior Katelyn Jones was named to the All-OVC Second Team for her 10th-place finish. The Racers also earned the 2010 OVC Sportsmanship Award. In 2011 freshman Carolyne Tanui earned All-OVC Second Team honors, as the team finished fifth. The first season of track & field saw the Racers finish fifth, at the 2011 OVC Outdoor Track & Field Championship hosted at Marshall Gage Track in Murray, Ky. The finish was three spots higher than the team finished a year before and came with just 12 participants. The team combined for a total of 11 top-10 finishes in the outdoor championships. Senior Josha Rogers was the top performer for the Racers, claiming first-place in the high jump, with a personal-best jump of 1.73m (5’8”). MSU also succeeded in the classroom in Severns first season, with senior Kristin Reffett earning 2011 CoSIDA Academic All-America Third Team honors, with a 4.0 GPA. Reffett had a strong senior campaign for the Racers. The men’s cross country team was also a top performer in the classroom at Murray State, recording the highest team GPA in the athletic department for 2010-11. Coach Severns also serves as the NCAA Southeast Regional Representative.

The 2012 Murray State outdoor track and field squad was Severns’ best team to date, as the Racers finished third at the OVC Outdoor Championships. The Racers set the school record in the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 45.63 and would take home the title. Junior Alexis Love was named the Female Track Athlete of the Year and also the OVC Athlete of the Championships after she accounted for 23.5 points at the meet. At the OVC Championships, Love set the OVC record in the 200-meter dash, winning with a time of 23.33. She also won the 100-meter dash with a stadium record time of 11.28. Love would go on to take 6th at the NCAA Championships in the 100 and made it to the semifinals in the 200. Love earned First Team All-American honors during the outdoor season in the 100 and Second Team All-American in the 200 in both the outdoor and indoor seasons. Love would go on to compete at the United State Olympic Trials in both the 100- and 200-meters. While at Murray State, Severns has produced eight First Team All-OVC athletes in both outdoor and indoor competition. She has also produced seven second team members. Sharda Bettis in the 55 meter hurdles, Alexis Love in the 100- and 200-meters, Tonia Pratt in the weight and hammer throws, Josha Rogers in the high jump and the 2012 4x100 meter relay team have all been OVC Champions under Severns. Pratt was also named the 2011-12 OVC Freshman of the Year. Severns’ 2011-12 squad won the conference’s Team Sportsmanship Award in outdoor and won the 2010-11 award for the indoor season. Under Severns, Rebecca Hbetamu has finished fourth each of the past two seasons in the 10k. While this past season, Severns had two Junior National qualifiers in Tonia Pratt and Lashea Shaw. Severns came to the Racers after spending four seasons as an assistant cross country and track & field coach at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro. While with the Spartans, she helped the men’s cross country team to four-consecutive top-five finishes at the Southern Conference Championships, including the team’s highest finish in school history (3rd in 2006 and 2009). During Severns’ tenure at UNCG, she coached 15 All-SoCon athletes, three Junior National qualifiers, one ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Second Team honoree and helped her student-athletes break 26 school records. Prior to UNCG, Severns was an assistant coach at Dickinson College (2005-06), where she led the cross country team to its sixth-straight Centennial Conference title, the NCAA Mideast Region crown and a sixth-place finish at the NCAA Division III Championships. The men’s cross country team placed second at the Centennial Conference meet and fifth at the NCAA Mideast Regional, and had a male runner earn the school’s first cross country All-American honors. In track and field, Severns produced one All-American, eight conference champions, 33 all-conference performers, and eight school and three conference marks. Severns got her coaching start at Mt. Pleasant High School in Mt. Pleasant, Mich. She served as a volunteer assistant track & field coach from March 2001-June 2002 and then returned in January of 2004 as the assistant coach for cross country and track & field. During Severns’ second stint, the girls track & field team won the conference and regional crowns and placed sixth at the state meet. In cross country, Mt. Pleasant won the girls’ conference championship. The Flint, Mich., native was a member of the Central Michigan University cross country and track & field teams, and earned a bachelor’s degree in applied arts in 2002. She received a master’s degree in sports administration from CMU in May 2011. Severns also has a USATF Level 1 Coaching Certification, an Endurance Event Specialist certification and a Track and Field Management certification. Besides her coaching responsibilities, Severns is still a distance runner. She has been a competitor in 15 marathons, including six Boston Marathons.

2012-13 Racers Coaching Staff

Adam Kiesler joined the Murray State cross country and track & field staff in August of 2010 as an assistant coach for both programs.

Kiesler primarily works with the sprinters, hurdlers, jumpers and multi-events athletes at Murray State. His job also includes

assisting with recruiting and team travel.

“I am excited to be a part of the staff at Murray State because of the energy that surrounds the athletic department,” Kiesler

said. “The student-athletes here want to compete at the highest level and become successful department wide in the OVC. As a part of the track

& field staff we are ready to help mold our student-athletes on and off the track.”

In his first season with the Racers, Kiesler got top performances from five student-athletes. Kiesler coached senior Josha Rogers to a first-place finish and personal-best jump in the high jump at the 2011 OVC Outdoor Championship (5’8”). He was also key in the Racers earning five more top-10 finishes in the meet. Junior Lexie Barr came in fourth in the pole vault, while freshman Katie Forshey was fourth in the 400-hurdles and in the high jump. Kiesler came to the Racers after spending a season as a graduate assistant track & field coach at the University of Toledo where he oversaw student-athletes in sprints, hurdles, jumps and multi-events. He coached three All-Mid-America Conference selections, six top-five Rocket performers, and a 2010 NCAA Regional Qualifier. His athletes also set school records in the 4x400 meter indoor relay and the 100-meter dash. Before joining the staff at Toledo, Kiesler was an assistant women’s track & field coach at Central Michigan University for two seasons. He helped produce nine CMU top-five performances, four All-MAC selections, and one NCAA Regional Qualifier. While at both Toledo and CMU, Kiesler also assisted with recruiting, academics and summer camps. He also spent one season as a volunteer assistant at the University of Michigan. Kiesler was a member of the Michigan track & field teams from 2002-2007 where he competed in the long jump and multi-events. The native of Rochester, Ill., earned a bachelor’s degree in earth sciences in April of 2007 from Michigan and is currently pursuing his master’s degree at Murray State. Kiesler has also earned Level One and Level Two coaching certificates from the USA Track & Field Association.

Wirth enters his first season as the Racers’ throws coach. Wirth comes to Murray State from Illinois State University where he was a 2012 graduate with a degree in recreation management. At Illinois State Wirth became the first walk-on athlete in school

history to become a team captain in 2012. In his senior season at Illinois State Wirth places 15th at the Missouri Valley Indoor Championships in the shot put with a throw of 49-01.50. During the outdoor season he placed eighth in the discus at the outdoor

championships with a toss of 150-05.

In his junior year, Wirth placed seventh in the shot put at the MVC Outdoor Championships with a throw of 51-01.75. The native of Mahomet, Ill., recorded a personal-best mark in the discus with a throw of 153-07. His PR in the shot put was 51-02.75 and his mark in the weight throw was 45-04.25.

“We have the talent and the ability. I’m very thankful for the opportunity to be a part of this team,” said Wirth. “I’m very excited to see our girls succeed

this year and go to conference with the mentality that we will dominate it.”

TJ WirthGraduate Assistant Coach • 1st Season

Taylor Miller is entering her first season as an assistant coach with the Murray State cross country and track and field teams and

will be working primarily with the distance runners.

A native of Owensboro, Kentucky, Miller is a graduate of the University of Kentucky in Lexington, where she was a member of the cross country and track teams. As a Wildcat, she was team captain for the ‘06-’07 season, an All-SEC performer in the

10,000 meters, and the recipient of multiple Southeastern Conference All-Academic honors. On the track, Miller holds the fifth fastest time in school history in the 10,000 meter run, crossing the line in 35:45 at the

Stanford Invitational. She was also a regional qualifier in the 5,000 meters, running 16:50 at the University of Tennessee’s Sea Ray Invitational.

After graduating summa cum laude from UK with a B.A. in English, Miller joined Teach for America and moved to Los Angeles, Calif., to teach secondary English. While in

California, Miller taught English at Lou Dantzler Charter High School. While at Lou Dantzler, she also coached the school’s first ever men’s and women’s track teams.

2012 Cross Country ReviewThe Murray State cross country teams had a solid 2012 season. The Racer women set numerous program records while the men approved upon their 2011 campaign.Freshman Abigail Ashbee-Simmonds paced the Racer women in 2012. Ashbee-Simmonds was the top finisher for MSU in five of six races in the fall. Ashbee-Simmonds set the program-record in the 6K in two separate meets in 2012. First setting the record at the Pre-NCAA meet at Louisville in October, running a time of 21:50.5. Ashbee-Simmonds would improve upon that time at the NCAA Southeast Regional with a time of 21:35.73. Ashbee-Simmonds was also a second team all-OVC member with her eighth-place finish at the OVC meet in October.Carolyne Tanui also had a solid individual season for the Racers, and ran a career-best time at the regional, while recording the third-fastest 6K time in Murray State history with a time of 22:15.37. Tanui was

the Racers’ top finisher at the Notre Dame Invitational in October with a 10th place finish. Tanui ran a 5K time of 17:59 at the meet.The womens team also improved from its fifth-place finish a year ago in the Ohio Valley Conference, and finished fourth as a team this past season. The Racers’ fourth-place finish at the OVC meet marked the third time in 2012 that MSU had a top-ten team finish.Rebecca Hbetamu ran a 5K time during the season of 18:11.86 at the OVC Championships, a new PR for her. Her best 6K time was 22:32.50 at the NCAA Regional. Four other Racers set season- and career-bests at the OVC meet in the 5K for the women. Those runners were Bridget Stichnot, Anna Grimes, Brittany Bohn and Abbie Oliver.Sara Davis, Anne Jablinski, Abby Baker, Katie Johnson, Kimmy Siebert, Jacquelyn Thate and Rebecca Morris also ran in 2012 for MSU.Lucas Prather led the Murray State men

for much of the season. Prather was MSU’s top runner in four of five meets in the fall. Prather’s best time of the year in the 8K came at the OVC Championships when he ran a time of 26:40.82. Jarred Koerner was Murray State’s top runner at the Fast Cats Invite in October when he ran a time of 28:20.8.Zack Calvert, James Chute, Chase Darnell, Will Elledge, Clayton Hall and Griffin Kelley also competed for the Murray State men in the fall.In all, nine Racers (not including freshmen) from both the men’s and the women’s teams recorded new personal-bests during the 2012 season.

Track & Field Facilities

Without question, Murray State’s track facilities are some of the finest in the nation, and the most outstanding in the region. The centerpiece of the track and field facilities is the nine-lane-state-of-the-art running surface. Originally built in 1973 as part of the Roy Stewart Stadium construction project, the track was initially surfaced with a Rekortan running surface used in the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. Recently the surface was replaced again giving the Racers a brand new track to practice and compete.

MSU alum Marshall Gage was the primary donor and fund raiser for the first resurfacing project and continues to be a great supporter of the program. So much in fact, the track was named in his honor in 1996.

Gage ran for the Racers from 1957-61 as a sprinter and hurdler. Gage was the only runner in the 1959 Ohio Valley Conference Championship to win three events, placing first in the 100-yard dash, 120-yard high hurdles and 220-yard low hurdles. He was inducted to the MSU Hall of Fame in 1965 and was also a 1995 Golden Horseshoe Award recipient.

In addition to the nine-lane track, the MSU track and field facilities include a spacious, modern locker room, and a well-equipped weight room and training room.

Located inside the stadium are: two long jump pits, a high jump area, a pole vault pit and a shot put area. Discus, javelin and hammer throw facilities are situated just outside the stadium but within the athletic complex.

Considered to be one of the finest facilities in the nation, picturesque Roy Stewart Stadium has provided MSU with a spacious, well-tended and modern facility since it opened in 1973. The seven-floor structure provides optimum seating for 16,200 fans. It serves as the centerpiece to Murray State’s centralized athletic facility along with the CFSB Center for MSU basketball and the baseball team’s Reagan Field. The stadium, not only has a new track, a new field turf surface was installed and new chair-back seats.

The first level of the stadium houses spacious offices and meeting rooms for football and track and field. It also includes the Tom “Doc” Simmons Training Room and one of the finest weight rooms in America, along with expansive dressing rooms for football, track, softball and baseball. The second floor serves as the primary home for the MSU athletics department with offices.

The stadium, which is named for one of MSU’s greatest coaches and administrators, is still one of the finest athletics facilities in the region and a continued testament to the MSU spirit that those who had the vision to build it.
