At the helm of The Citadel’s track and cross-country teams, JodyHuddleston has his eyes focused on the future. Since Huddleston tookcommand 18 years ago he has watched 11 indoor and 12 outdoortrack and field records fall. To date, 150 members earned All-Southern conference laurels, 43 of which were individual champions.

The 2002-03 season was great for the Bulldogs as Huddleston led themen’s outdoor team to its second fourth-place finish in four years atits league championships. The men’s 4x100m relay team, comprisedof seniors Kenyon Doyle, J.T. Marbury, Charles Watson and JeffWitherspoon represented the Bulldogs at the Penn Relays and tookThe Citadel’s third consecutive title in the event.

Huddleston recruited his first female in 1997, Mandy Garcia, whobecame The Citadel’s first-ever female student-athlete. Two yearslater, Peaches Hudson took second in the heptathlon and captured theinstitution’s first female All-Southern Conference title. In 2000,

Huddleston led his first female team to eighth place at the SoCon tournament and most recently saw thesuccessful performances of freshmen Clara Crossman and Laura Hewston as they recorded some of TheCitadel’s best times at the 5K and 6K distance.

Huddleston came to The Citadel from Oklahoma Baptist in Shawnee, OK, where he served as head coachfor seven years. In 1984, he earned NAIA District IX Coach ofthe Year honors. Earlier that year, the Bison finished second atthe league championships, the best track performance in 10years.

An all-America decathlete at Florida Community College,Huddleston set a new national, decathlon long jump, JuniorCollege record in 1975. He transferred to South Alabama andestablished two school records. Huddleston graduated in 1977with a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education andearned a master’s degree two years later in education from thesame institution.

Huddleston and his wife, Mary Ellen, have two children, Ryan(19) and Callie (14).

Brian Johnson enters his fourth year as a Bulldog assistant coach where hisprimary responsibilities remain with the distance runners. During Johnson’sfour-year span, the distance runners have shattered nine school records andset several marks on The Citadel’s top-ten lists.

Prior to joining The Citadel staff, he served as an assistant coach at FurmanUniversity from 1998-2000 while earning his M.A. in Health and ExerciseScience. In these two years his athletes collected 18 all-Southern Conferencehonors and set 12 school records.

Johnson received his B.S. in Physical Education from Charleston Southern in1998. As a member of the track and cross country teams, he was twicenamed to the Big South all-Academic Team and received all-Big South Con-ference recognition in the 3000m steeplechase.

Johnson continues to run in several local road races and last spring he traveled north to compete in the2003 Boston Marathon and married the former Emily Eades of Louisville, KY this past summer

Kris Kut, a member of The Citadel class of 2000, begins his third year as across country and track and field assistant. Like Huddleston, Kut haswatched as six men’s records have fallen.

During his years as a cadet at The Military College of South Carolina, Kutcaptured the Southern Conference javelin title three times, while earning all-conference accolades four times. With a throw of 204-10 in 2000, heestablished a new school record.

As a senior, Kut earned a spot at the Penn Relays and finished seventh. Hetook first at several other key meets including the Furman Invitational. The1999 season was a good year for Kut as he finished second at the SoContournament in the javelin and third at the Duke and Clemson Relays and as afreshman. Kut also earned the opportunity to represent The Citadel at the

1997 Junior National Track and Field meet in St. Louis, Mo.

A member of The Citadel class of 2000, Kut also earned his Master’s in Physical Education from TheCitadel’s College of Graduate and Professional Studies in 2003. Kut, born January 20, 1978, married theformer Holly Jones of Mechanicsville, VA this past summer.

The 2003 campaign continued one of the moresuccessful runs in recent Bulldog track historycapturing the 4x100 Penn Relay trophy en routeto the third consecutive second-place finish at

the Southern Conference Championships.

The men have their work cut out as they lose allbut one member of the 4x100 and 4x400-metersquads to graduation. “We will miss KenyonDoyle, J.T. Marbury, Jeff Witherspoon andCharles Watson,” remarked head coach JodyHuddleston, “and the points they have scoredover the past four years.” This years’ squadbegins a new cycle with freshman competing forfour years. Thomas Pressley, Cameron Easley,Curtis Dayson and Quintin Wright will mostlikely develop into the same type team as Doyle,Marbury, Witherspoon and Watson. Coacheshope this squad will have similar results.

Sprints:People may speculate who the Bulldogs willturn to, as large holes are left in The Citadelslate. Alex Prince, a senior from Atlanta, GA,will shoulder the brunt of these pressures. He

will mentor a talentpacked, young team, as heis poised to repeat as the400-meter champion inthe Southern Conference. In order to remain atopthe conference in theindoor and outdoor4x400 relay, freshmenDayson, Pressley andWright will need to con-tribute without delay.Senior Marcus Cohen sethis sights on being tabbed to the 4x400-meterrelay squad with Prince while surpassing hispersonal-best of 49.13 in the 400-meter. TheBulldogs face a difficult task as they must re-place the entire 4x100-meter relay squad thatwon three Penn Relays championships, reset theschool record, and secured three SouthernConference hon-ors.

Throws:Senior ChrisFranklin, alongwith sophomoreChris Petty, willassume largershot, discus andhammer throwingresponsibilities. This duo shouldturn a few headsin the conference. The senior trio ofMarcus Carter,Travis Taylor andHunter Reid willlaunch the javelinsince junior ErickAustin will bemissing from the

2004 Bulldog slate. Austin will likely miss theentire season as he recovers from an injury, suffered at last season’s Outdoor SouthernConference Championships.

Jumps/Multi-Events:Taylor will handle high jump duties along withthe nine other events encompassed in the de-cathlon. After last years second-place finish, hehopes to remain among the SoCon’s elite.Taylor’s training partner, Reid, will attempt torise in the conference standings as he trainedand improved dramatically during the off-season. With Taylor as the Bulldog’s stronghold in the high jump, seniors Demaj Wileyand Marcus Carter will fill the triple jump slate.

Distance:Senior Robert Killian will pace the distancecategory in his final season with the Bulldogs.Killian is primed for a superb final season afterperforming well in the fall on the trails. Killianwill be supported in the steeplechase, 5,000-and 3,000-meters by juniors Nick Gastley, MarcQuesenberry and freshmen Matt Holmes, WillWilson andCharles Kutz.Great resultscould be seen inthe middledistances assenior TonyKimbrough, junior VinceBechtel andsophomoreMarcus Butlerwill participatein the 800-meterand 1,500-meter.

The 2003 cross country season was as muchabout who was injured as it was about who ranwell for the Bulldogs.

On the men’s side, The Citadel’s number twoand three runners were injured before the firstmeet. Junior Nick Gastley suffered a season-ending injury early on, while junior VinceBechtel returned to the slate to make a valiantattempt at theSouthern Confer-ence champion-ships as theBulldogs’ fourthrunner. Teamcaptain and num-ber one runnersenior RobertKillian ran well atthe end of theseason, but fellshort of his per-sonal expectations.Junior MarcQuesenberry hadhis best season asa Bulldog, setting apersonal best of26:50 at theWinthrop Invita-tional. Quesenberry also stepped up to helpmentor a very talented group of freshmen inMatt Holmes, William Wilson and CharlesKutz. All three freshmen made huge stridesduring the season and Huddleston and his staffare excited about the future of Citadel crosscountry.

Assistant coach Brian Johnson continues torecruit a talented class of distance runners. Hisefforts will be seen next season as Johnson willnow have a squad consisting of his recruitsfrom seniors to freshmen.

Head coach Jody Huddleston and his staff lookfor the women to improve on the 2002-2003performance, as the young team from last sea-son has matured and a solid class of newcomersjoins the squad. The women will depend onstrong leadership from the Bulldogs lone se-nior, Rose Rodriguez, as they prepare for theupcoming season.

Sprints:Joining Rodriguez, junior Kelly Pesterfield andsophomores Monesha Booker, MiriamCrawford and Alexis Gonzalez will form therelay teams and handle most of the sprintevents. Gonzalez, last year’s lone pole vaulterfor The Citadel, proved she possessed talent inother places than the field, and thus earned aspot on the Bulldog’s sprint team. Gonzalez ranthe anchor leg of the 4x400m squad as they set anew school record at last year’s Furman Invita-

tional. Booker will be relied upon heavily asshe obtained oneyear of experience atthe collegiate level in2003. After lastyear’s results ofnothing less than thetop-three at theFurman Invitational,Huddleston’s staff,as well as The Cita-del, will expect greatthings from thisyoung lady and willonce again force theconference to takenote.

Assistant coach Brian Johnson brought in TheCitadel’s most talented group of women run-ners to date. Along with the men’s team, thewomen had their own battle with injury.

Freshman Laura Hewston proved her abilitiesimmediately, as she ran in the number one spotfrom day one. Unfortunately Hewston suffereda hamstring injury that hindered her the lastthree meets. Hewston became the Bulldog’ssecond fastest female 5K distance runner at TheCitadel Invitational. Her personal-best of19:43, run at The Cita-del Invitational, gaveher the fourth fastestcross country time ever.In the same race, Hew-ston became the sec-ond fastest femaledistance runner at TheCitadel.

Freshman Clara Cross-man missed the firstfew meets due to aninjury and upon her return, ran a personal bestof 19:51. This gave her the seventh fastest timein Bulldog history. In the same race, Crossmanbecame The Citadel’s fifth fastest female. Hew-ston and Crossman became two of only sixfemales in Citadel cross country history to run a5K in under 20 minutes. The number threerunner, freshman Amanda Rawl, also struggledwith an injury for almost the entire season.Rawl ran 21:14 at South Carolina and then 21:17at Davidson, which is one of the more difficultcourses in the conference, before she sufferedan injury. Two walk-on seniors, Lidia Murilloand Elizabeth Harris, who knocked two min-utes off their 5K times, along with junior LauraGisinger rounded out the top six on this year’steam.

average high school distance. Once again thisyear, Gonzalez represents the Bulldogs as thelone pole-vaulter. She vaulted her way into TheCitadel record books as Gonzalez achieved anew height of 9.6 ft. Junior Kelly Pesterfield willreturn as The Citadel’s mainstay in the longjump.

Distance:Laura Gisinger returns as the Bulldogs top-distance runner and will get some much neededand deserved help from a gifted group of fresh-men in Laura Hewston, Amanda Rawl, andClara Crossman. These freshmen proved theirtalent and made an immediate impact duringthe 2003 cross country season. Huddlestonexpects them to only get better during the in-door and outdoor track seasons as he believesThe Citadel has not seen its ultimate potential.
