When it comes to spring cleaning, it’s under-standable you and your
family want to clear all of the past year’s clutter and mess, without taking too much time away from enjoying fun springtime activities. And thankfully it’s possible to maintain a deep spring clean-ing without spending more than a day’s time, as long as you stay organized.
“Cleaning smart is the key to making your spring cleanup quick and efficient, not long and pains-taking,” says Jelmar President Alison Gutterman. “Everyone wants to enjoy the outdoors this time of year, so getting the whole family involved, making a plan and using the right tools will help your cleanup get done fast and your home will look great.”
When your clan is able to carve out one day to hold your spring cleaning initiative be sure to go in prepared to ensure total participa-tion and maximize success.
Spring Cleaning TipsDelegate: The entire family contributes to the mess over the year, which means the entire family should also help clean it up. Don’t try to take on a deep spring cleaning alone, enlist the troops and assign age-appropriate chores to everyone.
Make a list: Before everyone commits to sev-eral hours of spring cleaning, do a quick walk-through of the house and take notes on exactly what needs cleaning up or needs to be tossed out. This makes prioritizing work a bit easier, and you’re sure
to get everything that needs to be cleaned done.
Supply Suitably: Everyone has their ever-growing stash of cleaners in a closet or under the sink, but having a multitude of products just drags out your projects, not to mention creates more clutter. Try some effective multi-purpose cleaners that can take care of a few different rooms and several tasks for easy and quick cleanup.
Keep your perspective: Things are going to get dirty along the way, so while a good spring cleaning is definitely necessary each year, there are always going to be things to tidy up. Taking the steps to making your spring cleaning efforts as efficient and effective as possible is the best way to get your home looking its best.
Tips for Making Spring Cleaning Easy for the Entire Family
METRO CREATIVE
Eighty percent of U.S. adults suffer from some degree of gum disease, yet only 60 percent are aware of it. And only 3 percent choose to treat it. That’s alarming, because gum disease, or periodontitis, threatens much more than oral health; studies have linked gum disease to heart disease, strokes and even stillbirths.
With such broad health consequences, how do you know you are at risk?
A Mouthful of RiskNot surprising, risk factors begin in the mouth — with poor oral hygiene and diet. Bacteria and plaque build up without proper brushing and flossing. Teeth with cracks and crevices or improperly sealed fillings and crowns can trap food and encourage plaque and bacteria growth.
Patients with impacted wisdom teeth are also at risk and often experience no symp-toms. For this reason, dental professionals recommend that preteens, teens and young adults have their dentists examine them for signs of gum disease.
Risks Increase With AgeThe older people get, the greater their risk for gum disease. More than half of Ameri-can adults 35-69 show signs of gingivitis surrounding three or four teeth; about 30 percent show significant levels of gum disease. Eighty-six percent of people older than 70 show moderate gum disease and more than 25 percent lose their teeth.
Factors That Run in the FamilyGenetics may be responsible for about half of periodontal disease cases. Those whose parents suffered gum disease are 12 times more likely to harbor the bacteria that cause plaque and gum disease.
Even spouses and partners may be at risk, say researchers who’ve found that a par-ticular oral bacteria may be contagious over long periods of exposure.
The Smoking GunOf all the risks for periodontal disease, smoking is the most preventable. Smok-ers are four times more likely to develop advanced periodontal disease and exhibit bone loss and gum recession even with-
out gum disease. More than 40 percent of smokers lose their teeth during their lifetimes.
Even secondhand smoke carries risks, with a 50 percent to 60 percent higher incidence of gum disease. When people quit smoking, however, risks return to normal over time.
Women and Gum DiseaseDespite their better dental hygiene, women account for about 75 percent of periodontal office visits. Studies point to the effects of female hormones on oral health — ef-fects that are also triggered by prescription birth control and menopause. Some women see gingivitis flare-ups a few days before their periods and during ovulation as the hormone progesterone dilates blood vessels, causing inflammation and slowing down the repair of collagen —- the protein that supports gums.
These same hormonal fluctuations are in force throughout pregnancy, typically wors-ening at two months and peaking around the eighth month of pregnancy. These hormonal changes don’t actually cause gum disease; they simply make women more vulnerable to it. Stepping up oral hygiene can make a big difference — especially important given the recent research that links gum disease with low birth weight and other complications including stillbirth. These risks make dental visits a vital part of prenatal health care.
Socioeconomic Status and EthnicityAs with many diseases, gum disease ap-pears in greater numbers among the poor, particularly poor children and elderly peo-ple as well as racial minorities. Those with fewer financial resources for dental visits show the greatest amounts of oral bacteria. Approximately 44 million Americans live without medical insurance; 110 million have no dental insurance10.
Diseases Associated with Periodontal DiseaseMany diseases also contribute to the devel-opment of periodontal disease, whether

as a direct result of the disease or as a side effect of medication. Some of the most common are diabetes, osteoporosis, cancer, herpes, HIV and autoimmune disorders.
Additional Causes of Gum InflammationA variety of additional conditions also cause gum inflammation and are associated with higher rates of gum disease, including:
• Mouth breathing
• Stress. Its effects on the immune system are well documented. Some studies show that those effects include development of periodontal disease.
• Alcohol abuse• Canker sores• Allergies• Side effects of prescription medications disease.
It’s the season for spring clean-ing, and homeowners no doubt have a slew of projects on tap in the weeks to come. Clothes will be sorted and donated and unnecessary items thrown in the trash or sold in garage sales.
Sometimes, however, there’s little time for a thorough clean-ing, so a quick tidying up is done when guests are coming to visit. There are many ways to tackle the clutter and get a home pre-sentable in no time at all. When you’re short on time, consider these ways to give living spaces the appearance of cleanliness.
Kitchen✓ Assess the kitchen sink and
move all the dishes awaiting washing into the dishwasher. Wipe down the inside of the sink with a disinfecting wipe or a clean sponge.
✓ Wipe down the countertops quickly with a wipe or sponge. Wet a paper towel or rag and at-tack any errant spots on the stove and floor, which will become sticky and attract more dirt.
✓ Fold or hang dish towels in a way that camouflages any stains.
✓ Place a small pan of water on the stove with some nutmeg and cinnamon and bring to a
simmer. This will disguise any smells lingering from last night’s dinner.
✓ Take down magnets and notes stuck to the refrigerator and temporarily place them in a zipper-seal bag.
✓ Use a static-charged sweeper sheet to grab any hairs, dust or pet fur from the floor.
Living Room✓ Go to the sofa and turn the
pillows to the side that is not often facing outward. Consider this the “company side” that may not have any stains or mars in the fabric. Fluff the pillows to clear out dust.
✓ Use a handheld vacuum to clean up any crumbs or dirt on tables or in the sofa cushions.
✓ Wipe down coffee tables with a damp cloth to clear away dust and fingerprints.
✓ Wet the fingertips of rubber gloves and glide your hand over upholstery to rid furniture of pet hair.
✓ Keep a basket handy to neatly store newspaper, maga-zines or books.
✓ Gather and remove the most obvious clutter and relocate it elsewhere less noticeable.
✓ Dim the lights and light candles. It’s harder to spot dirt in a dim room.
Bathroom✓ A premoistened wipe can
quickly clean the sink and counters from dried-on contact solution or toothpaste.
✓ The same wipe can be used to rid the mirror of errant spots of splatter.
✓ Wipe down the toilet seat and the rim underneath. Use the toilet brush to scrub inside the bowl to remove any rings.
✓ Put new hand towels on racks or on the counter.
✓ Glide a lint roller over the bath mat to remove hair and fuzz.
Bedroom✓ If the children’s rooms are
messes, close the doors and make those rooms off-limits.
✓ Make your bed and fluff the pillows.
✓ Take dirty clothes to the hamper and put away anything left out. If desperate, pile it into the closet to attend to later.
✓ Neaten the night stands next to the bed, removing personal ef-fects or storing it in the drawers.

Home and Garden Connection
One of the best ways to improve a home's resale value is to address the landscape. Increasing a property's curb appeal can be done in many ways, but a well-pruned lawn and garden gives buyers the impression that the sellers truly took the time to maintain the home and the surrounding property.
Unfortunately, many homeowners choose exotic plants when addressing their landscape. Though these plants can be appealing and make a property stand out, if the plants are not native to the region, they could be doing more harm than good. Instead of upgrading your property with exotic plants from a far away land, consider the following benefits of choosing native plants before addressing your landscape.
Native plants benefit local wildlife. The native plants and the native wildlife spent years and years evolving together, with each doing their part to ensure the other's survival. But as develop-ment continued, local wildlife suffered because of lost food sources. The local wildlife needs local, native plants to survive, so choosing these plants instead of exotic plants can help ensure the survival of wildlife that helps keep the ecosystem in check.
Native plants require less work. Some prospective home buyers might find a yard filled with exotic plants to be visually stunning, but they might also see a good deal of work to maintain those plants. Many exotic plants require significant work on a homeowner's part to survive, while native plants have already adapted to the local climate and will require much less care. This is often attractive to current and future homeowners alike.
Native plants are a better investment. A native plant has evolved over the years to survive in its given area. Local insect populations and fungal infections might be able to destroy an exotic plant, but a native plant has grown resistant to such problems and likely has the ability to fight such infestations or infections on its own. An exotic plant might require costly pesticides and considerable at-tention from homeowners to survive such problems.
Though homeowners might find exotic plants help their home stand out from their neighbors', it's important that homeowners recognize the envi-ronmental benefits of choosing local plants before making any decisions.
The Case for Choosing Native Plants

The family pet is typically a beloved and cherished member of the family, one whom no one wants to see succumb to sick-ness or illness. But just like their human counterparts, pets can get sick, and it might surprise some pet owners to learn their pets aren't immune to diseases most commonly associated with human beings.
One such disease is diabetes, which is a common disease in dogs regardless of breed. Just like with human beings, diabetes in dogs does not discriminate. How-ever, females with the disease outnumber males by three to one, and Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, Miniature Schnau-zers, Keeshonden and Poodles have the highest incidence of diabetes.
When a dog gets diabetes, it's because of inadequate insulin production by the islet cells in the pancreas. For some dogs, this inadequate insulin production is due to a genetic predisposition.
Insulin is essential for dogs, as it allows glucose to pass into the cells, which metabolize the glucose for energy. When a dog is insulin deficient, it will develop high blood sugar, known as hyperglycemia, as well as a high urine sugar, a condition also known as glycosuria. When glucose is present in its urine, a dog will urinate more frequently, which sets off a chain reaction that includes dehydration and an urge to consume large amounts of water.
In addition to those symptoms, some additional signs a dog might have diabetes include:
✓ Weight loss
✓ Increased appetite
✓ Recurrent infections
✓ Intolerance of exercise
While any of the aforemen-tioned symptoms can be indica-tive of diabetes, their presence does not necessarily mean a dog is diabetic. For example, a dog
that cannot hold its urine might be suffering from a bladder or kidney infection instead of dia-betes. When a dog is exhibiting issues with regards to urination, the best thing an owner can do is consult a veterinarian imme-diately.
If diabetes is not diagnosed early on, then a dog might exhibit different symptoms once the disease has begun to advance. Cataracts, for instance, are common in diabetic dogs, so if a veterinarian determines a dog has cataracts, then he or she might want to test a dog for diabetes if no such test has been conducted already. Symptoms of advanced diabetes include:
✓ Lethargy
✓ Loss of appetite
✓ Vomiting
✓ Dehydration
✓ Weakness
✓ Coma
If left untreated, diabetes in
dogs can be devastating to the an-imal. Diabetes affects all organs, and dogs who aren't receiving treatment for diabetes are more
susceptible to infections and are likely to develop neurological problems as well. Enlarged livers are also common in dogs who
have diabetes but aren't receiving treatment.
More information is available at www.caninediabetes.org.
