En los ltimos aos, Mlaga se ha configu-rado como uno de los principales puertos delMediterrneo gracias a esos cientos de miles deturistas que llegan a ella siguiendo los pasos de

In recent years, Mlaga has become oneof the principle ports of the Mediterra-nean, thanks to these hundreds of thou-sands of tourists who arrive here,

following in the footsteps of our history,our culture, our gastronomy, our idios-yncrasy, our traditional hospitality.

It is that hospitality which has led to thecreation of this Welcome to Mlaga ma-gazine, which is a new source of informa-tion for cruise passengers who arrive inour city for the first time. We are sure thatwithin its pages you will be able to findeverything which our city has to offer visi-tors.

CON el ecuador del mes de julio llegana todo el litoral de la provincia de M-laga las fiestas marineras de la Virgen del Car-men. Desde Nerja hasta Estepona se repitencada 16 de julio las procesiones martimo-terrestres en antiguos barrios pesqueroscomo Los Boliches, La Cala del Moral,Rincn de la Victoria, El Palo, Pedregalejo,Huelin, Marbella, Estepona, La Carihuela, To-rre del Mar, etctera.

Casi todas se harn en la tarde noche. Ensu mayora conllevan mucho ms que los ac-tos religiosos, ya que se organizan verdade-ras fiestas patronales. As se podr ver en los

das previos y posteriores en Rincn de la Vic-toria, El Palo, Estepona Los Boliches o LaCarihuela.Pero, adems de estos eventostradicionales en el litoral, es posible encon-trar fiestas relacionadas con la Patrona delMar en pueblos de l interior, como Teba, Yun-quera, Cuevas de San Marcos, Montejaqueo Tolox. En este ltimo pueblo de la Sierrade las Nieves se ha recuperado en los ltimosaos tanto el evento religioso como una fe-

ria de ganado. En el casode Yunquera, se justifica laexistencia de esta fiestacon una leyenda.

Segn la tradicin oral,un emigrante yunqueranoque volva de hacer lasamricas estuvo a puntode perecer en un temporalen su trayecto por el Atln-tico. En ese momento seencomend a la Virgen delCarmen y le prometiconstruir una ermita en su

honor si se salvaba. Comoas sucedi, el yunqueranocumpli su palabra y a sullegada mand construir un pequeo temploen las afueras del pueblo. A la Virgen del Car-men de esta capilla tambin se le llama po-pularmente la Virgen de Porticate, el mismonombre que lleva la ermita y el paraje don-de fue construido. Desde entonces, existe mu-cha devocin en la localidad por esta imagen.

Most of thefestivities involve much more than the religiousceremonies because they are celebrations fora patron saint, as can be seen on the days priorto and after the 16th in Rincn de la Victoria,El Palo, Estepona Los Boliches and La Ca-rihuela.As well as these traditional celebrations

on the coast, festivals related to this Patron Saintof the Sea can also be found in inland townsand villages such as Teba, Yunquera, Cuevasde San Marcos, Montejaque and Tolox. In thelatter, which is a village in the Sierra de las Nie-ves, the festival has begun to be celebrated onceagain and it now coincides with a cattle fairIn Yunquera, the existence of this festival is jus-tified by a local legend.

According to tradition, an emigrant fromYunquera who was returning from the Ame-ricas was on the point of perishing in a stormas his ship was crossing the Atlantic. He com-mended himself to the Virgen del Carmen and

promised that if he survived, he would builda chapel in her honour. He did survive thestorm and was true to his word. When he re-turned to Yunquera he constructed a small cha-pel on the outskirts of the village. The Virgendel Carmen is also known locally as the Vir-gen de Porticate, which refers to the name othe chapel and the area around it. Since thenmany people from Yunquera have a very strongdevotion to the image of this Virgin.

SITUADO en la zona Este de la ciu-dad, el paseo martimo de Pedrega-lejo es una de las mejores sugerencias deocio y relax para esta poca del ao. Subuen ambiente tanto de da como denoche y su cercana al mar convierten aeste tramo del litoral malagueo en unode los ms transitados en la poca estival.

All se concentran algunos de los esta-

blecimientos de restauracin con ms so-lera de la ciudad, como El Cabra, ElMerlo El Caleo o Miguelito El Cari-oso. En ellos y en casi todos esos chi-ringuitos que se encuentran a pie deplaya el visitante encontrar una ofertagastronmica con sabor al Mediterrneoms malagueo: Espetos de sardinas,'pescato frito', conchas finas, gambas a laplancha, coquinas, almejas, ensaladilla depimientos, gazpacho,... Ya sea para al-morzar o para cenar la satisfaccin de losclientes ms exigentes est garantizada.

Pero, adems de contar con esos em-blemticos lugares para comer, estepaseo martimo se caracteriza por contar

con numerosos bares de copas, dondepoder degustar un caf, una cerveza, untinto de verano o un mojito.

La Chancla, La Galerna o La Tortugason algunos de los ms famosos. Sus te-rrazas, situadas junto a la arena de laplaya -algunas disponen incluso de mo-dernas camas para el descanso de losclientes-, estn concurridas a partir de las

cuatro de la tarde y hasta altas horas de lamadrugada.El encanto de Pedregalejo tambin

radica en su origen. Antao era un pe-queo y humilde barrio pesquero,como ocurre con El Palo, ubicado acontinuacin en direccin Este. Toda-va hoy se mantiene la estructura de lashumildes casas, con pasajes angostosentre ellas, casi labernticos. Por ellosdebe entrar el turista, que, en ningncaso, debe temer por su seguridad, yaque se trata de una zona de trnsitomuy conocida en Mlaga.

La playa, por supuesto, tambin esotro elemento fundamental de esta zona.

Aunque no es de las mejor valoradas la provincia, s cuenta con espacios sgulares, como sus espigones y sus pqueas calas, que permiten el bao sobresaltos. Se trata de una playa urbade arena oscura situada en el litoral orital de la ciudad, entre los Baos del Cmen y la zona de El Palo. Tiene un1.200 metros de longitud y unos 20 m

tros de anchura media.En ella, todava se sorprendern cla presencia de numerosas barcas pesca, todava hoy utilizadas por los qfaenan en esta zona del MediterrneTambin estn presentes las jbeguna embarcacin muy unida con la cdad. De hecho, en ellas siempre epintado el ojo fenicio, civilizacin qdio origen a Mlaga.

Para acceder a este barrio desdecentro de Mlaga, lo ms cmodo es uel autobs urbano nmero 11, que tiehasta tres paradas distintas a pie de plauna vez que se pasa por los Baos Carmen.

SITUATED on the eastern side ofthe city, the seafront promenade atPedregalejo is one of the best places forleisure and relaxation at this time ofyear. Its lovely atmosphere during theday and at night and its proximity to thesea make this one of the busiest stretchesof the Mlaga coast in the summer.

This is where some of the citys best-known restaurants are located, such asEl Cabra, El Merlo, El Caleo and Mi-guelito El Carioso. Here, and in almostall the chiringuitos (beach bar-restau-rants) along the beach, visitors will findMediterranean dishes created in trulyMlaga style: Sardines cooked on sticksover an outdoor fire, fried fish, large andsmall clams, grilled prawns, peppersalad, gazpacho whether for lunch ordinner, even the most demanding cus-tomers are guaranteed satisfaction.

But as well as these emblematic pla-ces to eat this seafront is also known forits bars, where you can enjoy a coffee, a

beer, a summer wine (red wine with le-monade or soda) or a cocktail, forexample. La Chancla, La Galerna andLa Tortuga are some of the most fa-mous. The terraces of the bars, right be-side the beach some even havesunbeds so their clients can relax arebusy from about 4 p.m. until the earlyhours of the morning.

The charm of Pedregalejo is also dueto its origins. It was once a small, lowlyfishing district, like El Palo, on the eas-tern side of the city. These days the sim-ple houses remain, with almostmaze-like narrow passageways betweenthem. Visitors should take at look at

these, and need not be concerned abouttheir safety as this is one of the best-known and busiest parts of Mlaga.

Of course, the beach is another fun-damental attraction of this area. Al-though it is not one of the most highlyrated in the province, it does have someinteresting features such as its breakwa-ters and small coves, which make for aneasy swim.

This is an urban beach of dark sandon the eastern side of the city, betweenthe Baos del Carmen and El Palo dis-trict. It is 1,200 metres in length andabout 20 metres wide.

On this beach, the presence of nume-rous small fishing boats will probablycome as a surprise. They are still usedtoday by those who fish in this area ofthe Mediterranean.

There are also some jbegas, a typeof fishing smack with close ties to thecity. They are always painted with thePhoenician eye, from the civilizationfrom which Mlaga originated.

To reach this district from the centreof Mlaga, the easiest way is to catch thenumber 11 urban bus, which has threestops beside the beach after passing theBaos del Carmen.

LOS embalses de Guadalteba, Guadalhorce y Conde deGuadalhorce forman el conjunto conocido popularmentecomo los Tres Lagos. Adems de ser el principal recurso hdricode la provincia de Mlaga, estos pantanos, unidos entre s, ofre-

cen durante el verano una alternativa a las playas. Cada vez sonms los que optan por la tranquilidad de estas aguas dulces,donde pueden encontrar prestaciones similares a las del lito-ral.

Un agradable bao, la pesca o un paseo en hidropedal sonalgunas de las opciones de este enclave natural, ubicado en elcorazn de la provincia, entre las comarcas de Antequera,Guadalteba y Guadalhorce. Tambin cabe la posibilidad decaminar por las sosegadas orillas de estos pantanos o simple-mente descansar bajo la sombra de las espesas arboledas. Losms atrevidos pueden optar por practicar algunos deportes deriesgo, como escalar las paredes verticales que se forman en lagarganta del Desfiladero de los Gaitanes, situado en la zonaconocida como El Chorro.Aqu se pueden practicar tambinotros deportes como la pesca, el cicloturismo o el senderismo.Por los alrededores de este enclave, existen numerosas rutas

senderistas como la que nos lleva a la barriada de la Angosturay las Mellizas o la ruta que parte de la barriada del Chorro a lasierra de Huma. No podemos olvidar que en el Desfiladero delos Gaitanes se encuentra el espectacular Caminito del Rey:Una muy estrecha pasarela que recorre las paredes de la gar-ganta. Construida a principios del siglo XX por los trabajado-res del ferrocarril, fue visitado por el rey Alfonso XIII cuandose inaugur la estacin de ferrocarril.

Por su deterioro en el recorrido, est completamente pro-hibido el paso de personas. Existe un proyecto de restauracin

del camino, que supondra, sin duda, una gran dinamizacinturstica en la zona. El Desfiladero de los Gaitanes es tambinlugar de nidificacin de grandes rapaces como el guila real oel buitre leonado.

En cuanto a mamferos destacamos la gil cabra montes,muy fcil de encontrar casi en cualquier rincn. La jineta, elmeloncillo o el gato monts son otras especies de mamferosque habitan en este paraje natural.

Otros lugares de inters histrico-paisajstico cercanos quepodemos visitar son las ruinas de Bobastro. Un yacimiento ar-queolgico que sirvi de refugio al rebelde mulad Omar BenHafsun, quien desafi el poder del califato cordobs. Tambinhay que destacar los restos de la iglesia mozrabe, excavadacasi por completo en la roca.

Entre los embalses del Guadalteba y del Conde del Gua-

dalhorce podremos hacer paradas en varios puntos de inters,como la entrada al caminito del Rey. Cerca del restaurante ElKiosco existe un tnel excavado en la montaa. Son 150 me-tros de longitud que nos llevarn por un sendero -dos kilme-tros- hasta la entrada de lo que fue este vertiginoso caminito.

Y, si seguimos por la carretera, llegaremos hasta el embalsedel Conde del Guadalhorce. Parada obligatoria para ver, desdela presa todo el entorno del pantano, sentarnos en Silln delRey, donde Alfonso XIII firm la terminacin de las obras.Frente a nosotros observaremos la llamada Casa del Conde.

THE reservoirs of Guadalteba, Guadalhorce andConde de Guadalhorce make up what is known lo-cally as the Three Lakes complex. As well as being the prin-cipal water resource in the province of Mlaga these reser-voirs, which are close together, provide an alternative to thebeaches in the summer. An increasing number of people areopting for the tranquility of these fresh waters, where the fa-cilities are similar to those on the coast.

A pleasant swim, fishing or a trip on a pedalo are someof the options in this natural enclave, which is situated in theheart of the province between the areas of Antequera, Gua-dalteba and Guadalhorce. It is also possible to walk aroundthe peaceful shores of these reservoirs or simply rest bene-

ath the shade of the trees. The more daring can practise ad-venture sports here, such as climbing the vertical walls ofthe Desfiladero de los Gaitanes gorge which is in the areaknown as El Chorro. Other sports can also be practisedhere, such as fishing, cycle tourism and walking. There arenumerous walking routes in this area, such as the one thatleads to La Angostura and Las Mellizas districts, or thewalk that runs between El Chorro and the Sierra de Huma.Nor can we forget that in the Desfiladero de los Gaitainesis the spectacular Caminito del Rey, or Kings Path. This

is a very narrow walkway which runs around the wallsthe gorge. It was built at the beginning of the 20th centufor workers on the railway and was visited by King AlfonXIII when he inaugurated the railway station.

Because of its dilapidated condition, it is completprohibited for people to use this walkway. A project h

been drawn up to restore it, and once this has been donwill undoubtedly boost tourism in the area. The Desfdero de los Gaitanes is also the nesting place of large biof prey such as golden eagles and griffon vultures.

With regard to animals it is very common to see agmountain goats here, and genets, mongooses and Eupean wildcats are other species which inhabit this natulandscape.

The nearby ruins at Bobastro are also interesting to viThis archaeological site was once the refuge of Mulrebel Omar Ben Hafsun, who challenged the power of Califate of Crdoba. There are also the ruins of a Mozabic church, which was almost completely carved into rock.

Between the Guadalteba and Conde del Guadalhoreservoirs we can stop in various places of interest, such

the entrance to the Kings Path. Close to El Kiosko restarant is a tunnel which has been dug through the mountaIt is 150 metres long and leads to a track two kilometto the entrance to what was this dizzying little path.

And if we continue along the road, we come to tConde del Guadalhorce reservoir. Here we should stoplook at the view over the surrounding area from the daand sit in the Kings Chair, where Alfonso XIII signed the completion of the works. And opposite us at this pois the so-called Casa del Conde, or Counts House.

MLAGA, con el nombre de Malaka

(saladero de pescado), fue fundadapor los fenicios alrededor del 800 a. de J.C.,utilizada como enclave comercial y si-guiendo la colonizacin comenzada en el1100 a. de J.C. con la fundacin de Gadir(Cdiz). Tras la dominacin griega du-rante ms de 70 aos, Mlaga estuvo do-minada por los cartaginenses, pero tras lasguerras pnicas, acabadas en el ao 202 a.de J.C. con la victoria romana, Mlagapas a su dominio, con el nombre de Fla-via Malacita, convirtindose en un impor-tante punto de trnsito, al comunicarla conotros enclaves romanos en la Pennsula ycon los dems puertos del Mediterrneo.De esta poca es el Teatro Romano, que

aunque es de pequeas dimensiones, pasapor ser uno de los ms antiguos de todaHispania. Tras la cada del Imperio Ro-mano, Mlaga se ve afectada por las gran-des migraciones y asentamientos de lospueblos germanos concretamente de losvndalos silingos que importaron deOriente el credo arriano.

A principios del siglo VIII comienza elderrumbe de la monarqua goda y desdelas costas del Norte de frica, la penetra-cin de los rabes en la Pennsula Ibrica.Mlaga cay bajo su dominio en el ao743. Mlaga se convirti en una ciudadfloreciente, rodeada por una muralla concinco grandes puertas. Numerosos arra-bales y barrios amurallados componan la

ciudad, atravesada de Este a Oeste por unava que comunicaba el puerto y la Alcazabacon el interior del recinto amurallado. In-dependientes del resto de la ciudad seasentaban los barrios de comerciales geno-veses y la judera. Abderramn III en elS.XIII construy La Puerta de Atarazanas(actual acceso al mercado central). Aun-que en el siglo XIV se produjeron los pri-meros intentos de conquista, no fue hastael final del siglo XV cuando lo consiguie-ron los Reyes Catlicos.

Mlaga fue conquistada el 19 de agostode 1487 (la ltima ciudad conquistada fueGranada en 1492). Con la conquista, lascomunidades religiosas son fundamenta-

les en el crecimiento urbano, aglutinandoa su alrededor los arrabales. Se crea porprimera vez una gran plaza, la plaza Mayor(hoy de la Constitucin) y los conventosde la Victoria y la Trinidad.

Los siglos XVI y XVII se caracterizaronpor las crisis que provocaron la expulsinde los moriscos por un lado y por otro lasmalas cosechas, las inundaciones causadaspor los desbordamientos del ro Guadal-medina y las epidemias. En el siglo XVII, seconstruy el puerto y ms tarde se ampli.Aunque la Catedral inicia sus obras en1528, no se terminan hasta el siglo XVIII:bien avanzado el barroco. En la mismapoca, se realiza una nueva ampliacin del

puerto, reactivando un poco la recupera-

cin de los siglos anteriores.En el siglo XIX, Mlaga comienza un

importante desarrollo urbanstico, diferen-cindose claramente la zona industrial,frente a otra zona de grandes villas y hote-les. se abre la calle Marqus de Larios y laAlameda. La crisis econmica y polticadebido a la tirana del rey Fernando VII(que permiti el injusto fusilamiento de To-rrijos, junto a sus hombres, cuyos restos

descansan en la plaza que en la actualidadse llama Plaza de la Merced, centro de ac-tividades y fiestas populares), son los datos

negativos a destacar en el siglo XIX. Lasprimeras dcadas del siglo XX, no fueronmuy propicias, pero a partir de los aos 60,Mlaga se convierte en el boom tursticode Espaa, donde millones de personas laeligen como ciudad para sus vacaciones ocomo el lugar ideal de residencia para milesde extranjeros, convirtindose en la quintaciudad en importancia de Espaa y en unamoderna capital europea, enriquecida porsu diversidad internacional y mezcla deculturas. Mlaga desde el ao 1992, dis-pone de una gran infraestructura en carre-teras con magnficas conexiones nacionalesy posee uno de los aeropuertos internacio-nales ms importantes de Europa.

MLAGA, under the name of Ma-

laka (referring to the salting of fish),was founded by the Phoenicians around800 B.C. as a trading place, following thecolonisation which commenced in 1100B.C. with the founding of Gadir (Cdiz).

After the Greek domination which las-ted for over 70 years, Malaga was ruled bythe Carthaginians but after the Punic Wars,which ended in the year 202 B.C. with vic-tory by the Romans, the city passed into

their domain under the name of FlaviaMalacita, and became an important pointof transit with communications to other

Roman enclaves in the Peninsula and otherMediterranean ports. The Roman Theatredates back to this period and although it issmall in size it is one of the oldest in thewhole of Hispania.

After the fall of the Roman Empire,Mlaga was affected by the great migra-tions and settlements of the Germanic pe-oples, specifically the Siling Vandals whoimported the Arian beliefs from the Orient.

In the early 8th century the collapse ofthe gothic monarchy began and from thecoasts of North Africa the Moors penetra-ted the Iberian Peninsula. Mlaga fellunder their control in the year 743 and be-came a flourishing city, surrounded by a

wall with five large gateways. The city co

prised numerous walled districts and wcrossed from East to West by a road whlinked the port and the Alcazaba fortrwith the interior of the walled precinct. parate from the rest of the city were the dtricts of traders from Genoa and the Jewdistrict.

In the 13th century Abderramn built the Atarazanas Gate (which is nthe entrance to the indoor market). Athough in the 14th century the first tempts at a reconquest took place, it wasuntil the end of the 15th century that tCatholic Monarchs succeeded in taking city.

Mlaga was conquered on August 1

1487 (the last city to be conquered wGranada in 1492). With this conquest, ligious communities became a fundamtal part of urban growth, with the poodistricts on the outskirts. A grand squwas created for the first time - the PlaMayor, which is today the Plaza deConstitucin as well as La Victoria aLa Trinidad convents.

HACE ms de medio siglo que JoaoMagalhaes comenz a coleccionarvehculos. Con los aos fue incrementandosu repertorio y pens en abrir un museocon ms de un centenar de coches. Hoy esesueo es toda una realidad, gracias a laapertura en Mlaga del Museo Automovi-lstico.-Hace ya casi tres aos que arranc el MuseoAutomovilstico de Mlaga. Qu balancehace de este perodo en cuanto a visitas?

-En cuanto visitas necesitamos muchasms. Aos de trabajo en la restauracin devehculos, piezas de arte, moda... S lepuedo avanzar que, en el primer semestredel ao 2013, de los visitantes el 21,83%eran de Mlaga capital, el 11,27%, de laprovincia , el 16,39% ,de Andaluca y restode Espaa y el 50,51%, extranjero. Segui-mos trabajando para que sean muchasms. Es una coleccin que sorprende y su-pera las expectativas de quien la visita.-Qu tipo de pblico se ha acercado hasta all

desde sus inicios hasta ahora?

-Pblico de todo tipo: local, nacional y ex-tranjero. Hombres y mujeres. Nios y niasa travs del programa educativo y de las vi-

sitas con centros escolares, turistas cultu-rales, personas relacionadas con el turismode incentivo y congresual, amantes del mo-tor y de la moda, personas con deficienciassensoriales -somos un espacio accesible-,empresarios relacionados con la organiza-cin de eventos, celebridades,...-Todos los coches expuestos tienen un valor es-pecial, pero, cules destacara por su singula-ridad?

-Lo que vale es el conjunto. Con los temas

que desarrolla este museo es nico en elmundo. Para m el ms importante ser elprximo que vayamos a conseguir.

De los 96 vehculos expuestos le puedodestacar Ferrari, Mercedes 'alas de gaviota'y Mercedes 540K, Bugatti, Aston Martin,Auburn o Packard. Tambin el conjunto deRolls Royce y Bentleys.-Este museo se nutre de su coleccin de cochesantiguos. Por qu apost por Mlaga para lu-cirlos?

-Porque fue la ciudad que ms rpido mos-tr su inters.-Adems de la exposicin permanente, qu ac-tividades desarrollan dentro y fuera del espa-cio de la Antigua Tabacalera?

-Somos un museo muy dinmico e inno-vador. En 2011 celebramos la primera Pa-sarela de Alta Costura Sostenible, con lapresencia de diseadores malagueos y,como madrina del evento, con gatha Ruizde la Prada. Desarrollamos actividadespara toda la familia en el perodo estival as

como durante todo el ao: Da del Padre yde la Madre, Semana Santa, Festival deCine de Mlaga y Navidad.

Fuera del espacio Tabacalera asistimos aferias internacionales para promocin deldestino y del museo, as como otras inicia-tivas. Por ejemplo del 27 al 30 de junio he-mos participado en Mulafest, un festival detendencias urbanas, con dos vehculos delespacio Tuning que causaron gran expec-tacin.-All se celebran incluso bodas...

cer con nuevas adquisiciones. Aporta espacio cultural dinmico que apuepor la ciudad, ofreciendo un producto

MORE than 50 years ago, Joao Magalhaesbegan to collect vehicles. Over the yearshis collection grew and he thought about ope-ning a museum with more than 100 cars. Nowhis dream has come true, thanks to the openingof the Museo Automovilstico (Motor Mu-seum) in Mlaga.-It is now nearly three years since the Motor Mu-seum of Mlaga opened. How have things been in

terms of visitors?-We need many more visits. Years of work onthe restoration of vehicles, pieces of art, the fas-hion I can tell you that in the first six monthsof this year, 21.83% of our visitors were fromMlaga city, 11.27% from the province, 16.39%from other parts of Andaluca and the rest ofSpain and 50.51% were from abroad. We areworking on there being many more. This co-llection is surprising, it exceeds the expectationsof those who come to see it.-What type of people have come here so far, since themuseum opened?

-All types of people: Local, Spanish and fo-reigners. Men and women. Children, throughour educational programme and visits orga-nised for schools, cultural tourists, people re-

-It is the combination that is important. Thismuseum is unique in the world because of itsdifferent themes. For me, the next thing weachieve will be the most important one.

-We are a very dynamic and innovative mu-seum. In 2011 we held the first SustainableHaute Couture Fashion Show, with the partici-pation of designers from Mlaga, and with ga-tha Ruiz de la Prada as the sponsor. We organiseactivities for all the family in the summer andduring the rest of the year: Fathers Day, Mo-thers Day, Easter Week, the Mlaga Film Festi-val and at Christmas. Away from the Tabacalerabuilding we attend international fairs to promotethe destination and the museum, as well as otherinitiatives. For example, from 27th to 30th Junewe took part in Mulafest, a festival of urbantrends, with two vehicles from Tuning which

caused a lot of excitement.-You also hold weddings here...

-Yes, this is a new market. We have to innovateand be different. With this product we want toattract the attention not only of local people, butalso nationally and internationally, making M-laga an attractive destination for civil and unu-sual weddings with our Las Vegas style chapel,which really makes an impression.-What activities have you planned for this summer?

-From Tuesdays to Thursdays, guided toursand a trip round the museum garden in a 1919

Brasier. On Fridays we start the engines of soof the cars in the collection. On Saturdays thwill be free guided tours included in the pricthe ticket and on Sundays you can see a vehdriving around inside the museum. Also, we have himportant events and cultural activities whhave indirectly generated work in this city, suas the international presentation of the Merdes SL500 model. We attract big conferenbecause we can offer a large capacity, with gdinners for between 12 and 3,000 people. Awe will contribute even more, because we nestop creating new ideas and projects.

EL espeto es, sin lugar a dudas, unade las formas de cocinar ms rudi-mentarias que llegan hasta nuestros das.Atravesar un pez para cocinarlo con lasbrasas. En principio, el procedimientoparece bien sencillo, aunque no lo es

tanto. Influyen muchos factores: La tc-nica para pinchar al pescado, la brisamarina que ayuda a que la flama lo ase,el propio espeto utilizado, la frescura y lagrasa del propio pez, etc...

Y quien llegue a la Costa del Sol seencontrar con una amplia oferta de res-taurantes y chiringuitos que lo elaboranen su justa medida. Desde Nerja hastaManilva hay ms de cien kilmetros delitoral donde se puede probar esta ver-dadera delicia para los amantes del buenpescado.

Jureles, doradas, sargos, lubinas, ro-daballos,... Existe una amplia gama depescados que se pueden elaborar con

esta tcnica tradicional, pero, no hayduda, la reina en este mbito es la sar-dina.

En Mlaga saben muy bien de lo quese habla cuando se trata de este pescadosabroso, salado y nutritivo.

De hecho, existen dos refranes en lazona que aluden a cul es el momentoidneo para probarlos. Por un lado, hayquien dice que no hay que probarlos enlos meses que lleven la letra 'r'. Es decir,la poca ms propicia es la comprendidaentre los meses de mayo y agosto.

Por otro, hay quien dice que las sar-dinas tienen an ms acotadas su poca:Las sardinas, de Virgen a Virgen. Deesta forma, se alude a dos fechas muyconcretas en el calendario festivo mala-gueo: El Da de la Virgen del Carmen(16 de julio) y el Da de la Virgen de laVictoria (8 de septiembre). Es esa pocadel ao cuando las sardinas son de

menor tamao y se les apoda popular-mente como 'manolitas'.

Hay incluso frases populares que, conhumor, sealan las peores fechas paradegustarlas: : Si quieres matar a tumujer, dale sardinas por San Miguel

Para probarlos hay que ir ineludible-mente hasta la playa. All los especialis-tas son los espeteros o asadores, a losque se les ve durante el verano prepararestoicamente las sardinas y otros pesca-dos junto a las brasas, que hacen multi-plicar an ms la temperatura del calorpropio del verano malagueo. La tradi-cin manda que sea en una antiguabarca, con las brasas en su interior. An-tiguamente era el oficio propio para unpescador jubilado. Hoy ya no es as.

SPIT-ROASTING is, without adoubt, one of the most rudimen-tary forms of cooking these days. Itinvolves skewering a fish and coo-king it over hot embers. In principle,the procedure seems really easy, butin reality it isnt quite so. Numerousfactors come into play: the techniqueof skewering the fish, the sea breezethat helps the flames to cook it, the

type of skewer that is used, the fres-hness and fattiness of the fish, etc.Anyone who comes to the Costa

del Sol will find a wide range of res-taurants and beach bars which cookthis dish perfectly. From Nerja toManilva there are more than 100 ki-lometres of coast where you cansample this true delight for lovers ofgood fish dishes.

Mackerel, gilt-head bream, seabream, sea bass, turbot a wide va-riety of fish can be cooked with thistraditional technique but undoub-tedly the best of all is the sardine. InMlaga, they know exactly what theyare doing when it comes to this deli-cious and nutritious fish.

In fact, there are two sayings inthis area about the perfect moment

to try them. One says that sardinesshould not be eaten in months whosename includes the letter r. In otherwords, the best time of year is bet-ween May and August.

The other gives the sardines aneven more limited period: Sardines,from Virgin to Virgin, it says. Thisrefers to two specific dates in theMalaga calendar of festivals: The

ARCHIDONA era conocida comoOscua por los fenicios, pero mstarde los romanos la denominaron ArxDomina, hay quien lo traduce a nuestrocastellano actual como 'Seora de las al-turas'. De esta forma se describa la zonaalta del casco urbano(ocupada poste-riormente por el castillo rabe), a la quese conoce como el Cerro de la VirgenAn se conservan restos de aquel re-cinto amurallado, que todava hoy se an-toja inexpugnable al estar situado sobreuna colina desde la que se divisan lasfrtiles tierras ahora pobladas por olivos.

Durante siglos este recinto amuralladofue de gran importancia estratgica. No envano, la medina rabe fue capital de la de-nominada Cora de Rayya, la divisin ad-

ministrativa que coincide con el interior dela provincia. Alli fue proclamado emir Ab-

derramn I en el ao 756.Algunas crnicas histrica que ellcastillo fue conquistado por el famosorebelde mulad Omar Ben Hafsn envarias ocasiones, aunque finalmente fuetomado por el mismsimo AbderramnIII en el ao 907.

Este edificio, declarado como Bien deInters Cultural, tambin es el origen deuna de las leyendas ms famosas del anti-guo Al-ndalus, la que protagonizaronTagzona y Tello, que tuvo su fatal desen-lace en la Pea de los Enamorados, que sedivisa perfectamente desde la fortaleza.Esa creencia popular seala el castillocomo el lugar donde naci la pasin de un

amor imposible entre la hija de un rey mu-sulmn y un noble cristiano hecho preso y

encerrado en una de sus mazmorras. Lajoven Tagzona no slo lo liber sino queemprendi la huida junto a l. Al ser sor-prendidos en su huida, los soldados rabeslos persiguieron hasta esa gran roca calizasituada a mitad de camino de Antequera.Una vez que alcanzaron su cima, los dosenamorados decidieron tirarse al vacopara poner fin a sus vidas, ya que sabanmuy bien que el rey no aprobara nuncaesa relacin..

Uno de los motivos que hace recomen-dable esta visita son las vistas panormicasy los restos de la antigua fortaleza. En losltimos aos se ha rehabilitado y puesto envalor tanto el entorno como la ermita de la

Virgen de Gracia, construida sobre la atigua mezquita. En su interior todava h

se conservan algunos de los rasgos arqtectnicos del templo rabe, que convivperfectamente con los de la parroquAdems, recientemente se ha inauguraen un edificio aledao un centro de intpretacin de la cultura mozrabe, dondepodr conocer ms datos sobre este eclave lleno de paisajes, historia y leyend

Todas estas edificaciones, a las que hbra que unir la ermita de San Antonio, tuada antes de llegar a las primemurallas, forman una interesante agrupcin arquitectnica, que se complemecon las edificaciones dieciochescas quepueden encontrar en el actual casco bano.

ARCHIDONA was known as Oscua bythe Phoenicians, but later the Romanscalled it Arx Domina, which can be transla-ted as meaning Lady of the heights. Thisrefers to the highest part of the town (wherean Arab castle was later built), which isknown as the Virgins Hill. Some parts of

that walled enclosure still remain, and itwould still be impregnable today because itis on the top of a hill with views over the fer-tile land where olive trees now grow.

For centuries, this walled castle was ofgreat strategic importance. The Arab citywas the capital of the so-called Cora deRayya, the administrative division for therural area of the province. This is where Ab-derramn I was proclaimed Emir in the year756.

According to some historic tales the cas-tle was conquered on several occasions bythe famous Muladi rebel Omar Ben Haf-sn, but it was finally taken by AbderramnIII in the year 907.

This castle, which has officially been

classified as a Building of Cultural Interest,is also the origin of one of the most famouslegends of the old Al-ndalus, the oneabout Tagzona and Tello, whose tragedytook place on Lovers Rock (La Pea delos Enamorados), which can be clearlyseen from the fortress. According to thispopular legend, it was in this castle that animpossible love was born between thedaughter of a Muslim king and a Chris-tian nobleman who was taken prisonerand kept in one of the dungeons. The

young Tagzona not only set Tello free butalso ran away with him. However, theywere spotted by the Arab soldiers, whochased them to this huge limestone rockhalfway along the road to Antequera. Oncethey had reached the top of the rock, thelovers decided to throw themselves off and

put an end to their lives, because they knewperfectly well that the king would never ap-prove of their relationship.

One of the reasons this visit is recom-mended is because of the panoramic viewsand the remains of the old fortress. In recentyears the area has been restored, includingthe Virgen de Gracia church which was built

on the site of a former mosque. Its interstill contains some of the architectural ements of the Arab mosque, and these coexperfectly with those of the church. An adcent building has been converted into an formation centre about the Mozaraculture, where visitors can find out m

about this enclave, its landscapes, histoand legends.These buildings, together with the S

Antonio church which stands outside walls of the complex, form an interesting chitectural group, which is complemenby the 18th century buildings in the prestown centre.
