• We as Territorians own the Power, Water andSewerage assets that provide these essentialservices to all Territorians.
• OUR tax dollars have gone into building andmaintaining this inrastructure.
• PWC employs over 1000 employees including
80 apprentices.Recently the Government has raised electricityprices by 30%, water by 40% and sewerage by25% while also making comments about sellingthese assets. What would this mean or youramily, your business and the Northern Territory’suture?

How does the Privatised network in South Australia and the Public Owned network of Queensland
stack up against NT’s 100% Public Owned network that is being prepared for privatisation?
The Cyclone Carlos Darwin and the Top End Jan 2011 experience
- Public asset responding to public need. The Black Saturday Bushfres- Private failure leads to public pain in
Victoria. Up to 100 Power and Water sta worked in the eld
at any one time, including relie crews rom Alice
Springs and Katherine. Some areas o the Top End
were inaccessible due to fooding and the extent o
the damage to inrastructure made it dicult to provide
customers with restoration times, however most had
power restored in a ew days. The success was due
in no small part to the act that state owned electricity
supplier PWC has depots in many local communities and
the company puts service rst.
The Black Saturday bushres raged through Victoria on
Saturday, February 7, 2009, killing 173 people, injuring 414
and destroying 2030 homes. The Victorian Bushres Royal
Commission ound that ve o the Black Saturday bushres
including the Kilmore East and Murrindindi blazes that claimed
159 lives were caused in no small part by electricity asset
ailures linked to lack o maintenance and upkeep.

#The decision to increase prices is similar to price hikes implemented prior to the privatisation of SA and Victoria’s electricity networks.

All companies, Government’s and or that
matter many amilies carry some orm o
debt, whether it is a mortgage, a car loan
or a second mortgage to renovate. Most
o these types o loans are manageable
when paid o through a sensible paymentplan over 10 or 20 years. However the
CLP Government has decided to orce
Territorians to pay o debt taken out to fx
essential service inrastructure over one
term, hence the 30% and 40% increases
to essential service charges. The previous
Government had a sensible payment plan
in place that would have meant limited price
increases and been in the best interests o
Territorians. The CLP Government is seekingto atten the PWC cal or sale, retire debt
and sell our essential services to companies
that will put profts and bottom line beore
communities and service.
