We are a little more than a month away from the 2013 National Guild of Hypnotists Convention. Excitement and anticipation builds among those who know what the convention experience will bring … but what about those professionals who have never attended the NGH Convention? ...Those professionals whose lives and practices could be enriched by being part of this dynamic event? Your peers help shape and form the public perception of our profession. What they do, say, write, and communicate reflects on all of us as practicing consulting hypnotists. Encourage others to attend the 2013 NGH Convention. Recruit new attendees, so that they too, can develop as professionals. Together, we all grow stronger.

The Changing Face of Facebook ~ Part II Last week, the NGH Convention Newsletter (Volume 6) looked at changes that are being implemented in the Facebook platform. As most people already know, Facebook started as a site for students at Harvard University to connect with one another, soon growing to include other Boston area universities, then other Ivy League schools. From there, the rest is historic wildfire, that has been written in less than a single decade.

With the growth in the number of Facebook users and its vast global outreach, it was inevitable that Face-book advertising would become a component of the social media platform. And while the millions of world-wide users on Facebook may sound like the most enticing reason to advertise your professional practice and services there, that is in fact, not the most significant advertising benefit Facebook offers. Five Reasons Facebook Advertising May be Right for You 1. Facebook advertising is so simple to create, you don’t need a graphic designer to assist you. 2. Facebook advertising lets you turn an ad “on” or “off” at any time, and back “on” again if the notion

strikes you.

3. With Facebook advertising, you can choose to spend as little as $5 a day (or even $5 total if you elect to only run your ad for one day.)

4. There is no simpler way to test market a concept for your market’s receptivity than by using Facebook advertising, which makes it simple to test several versions of the same ad, changing out the style, language, or key promotional point of each ad. Facebook even offers you the option to “Create a Similar Ad” which means with one click you can create multiple identical ads, changing one variable on each ad.

5. And the single most important reason that Facebook advertising is effective for sole practition-ers, consultants, and the small business person: Facebook advertising makes it easy for you to target your best potential client by age, gender, location, employment affiliation, and an extensive list of categories and subsets of categories an individual has already aligned with by “Liking.”

Five Steps to Get Started with Facebook Advertising 1. Set up your Facebook payment account. Facebook accepts all major credit cards including Discover, as

well as PayPal and Direct Debit. Facebook will issue you a daily spend limit. The more you advertise with them, the higher they will raise your limit. If you require more than $1,000 in Facebook daily spend-ing (you won’t), you will have to contact Facebook directly to request this spending level.

2. Choose what you want to target with your advertising. Remember to keep your message and your purpose simple. After all, you only have 135 characters of text to say what you want to say on Face-book, and your audience didn’t go to Facebook to see your ad, so keep your purpose short and sweet. For example, you may wish to sell a book or tape, but the most frequent use of Facebook advertising (and one of its most effective) is to increase the number of page “Likes” you receive. While this objec-tive may sound insignificant in the scope of running a business and needing paying clients, it is in fact very important. The people who “Like” your Facebook page become your long-term captive audience. You don’t have to sell them a product or service immediately. Instead, you can build your relationship with them, gaining credibility and bypassing the need to attempt the hard sell.

3. Facebook ad set-up is a step-by-step process; you will literally be filling in the blanks regarding when you want your ad to run, who you want to see it, what you want to spend, and what you want to say. Remember to give each campaign a unique name. This is internal information that your viewers will not see, but will help you easily identify past campaigns rather than relying on the numeric identifier Face-book will give it if you don’t choose a name.

4. Use simple photos or artwork in your ad. Facebook ads are tiny. Close-up photos of a single item or face often work well. Stick to bright, crisp colors that will stand out on the page. Make sure you own the rights to use a photo or graphic. Look for websites that offer royalty-free use of photos or use photos you have taken or have had a photographer take for you. Unlike print advertising that calls for high res-olution images, Facebook wants low resolution images. A simple way to decrease the resolution of a photo without otherwise altering it is to insert it into a PowerPoint slide (where the resolution is automat-ically reduced for you) and then resave the image as a JPG that you then upload to Facebook.

5. Don’t worry that by targeting a select audience you may not be reaching millions. Instead, appreciate the fact that you can reach out to select demographic groups. For example, did you know you can send Happy Birthday messages to everyone within a demographic who has a birthday during a select week? Or that you can target engaged couples, or just engaged males or females with a self-improvement message such as weight loss before the big day? Facebook advertising makes it easy for you to talk to very narrow demographics with very specific messages.

Here are a few other thoughts about Facebook advertising. Three to five days is probably as long as you want any one ad to run at a time. Watch your daily results and turn your ad off sooner or later depending upon when it begins to decline in effectiveness. Pay attention to “Unlikes.” You aren’t likely to have many of these, but if you see several popping up as you run your ad, you should pause your campaign and decide what might be triggering this undesired reaction. Lastly, remember your first goal of an ad is that a viewer will “Like” it and your second goal is that he or she will click through to your page. Make sure when they arrive on your Facebook page you have fresh content with status updates scheduled at least daily during your ad campaign.
