The sixty-one historic commercial properties of Phoenix presented in this nomination are located in the central urban core of the city of Phoenix, Arizona. Architecturally, the buildings trace the commercialization of Phoenix, encompassing all aspects of commercial operations including retail, warehousing and storage, and service activities, all of which generate specific building types to accommodate their varying functions.

The buildings also reflect the prevailing architectural styles of the various periods, ranging in date from 1885 to 1947.

The full narrative of this thematic nomination was prepared under a Survey and Planning grant from the State Historic Preservation Office. The nomination and statements con cerning the methodology and approach accompany this nomination form.

Note; The initial statement concerning methodology is included here according to the guidelines for thematic resource nominations. This section includes tables providing a breakdown of resources by development period (see Item 8), as well as a numerical listing of type of forms utilized in the survey process. Both of these tables relate to the number of buildings included in the initial survey and contained within the initial nomination submitted to the SHPO in August 1984. Due to substantial discussion and debate by all parties and consideration by the Arizona Historic Sites Review Com mittee, the number of properties included in the nomination has been reduced. Hence, the, tables are not relevant to the nomination at this time.

In part, properties were deleted for concerns over relationship to the theme, inadequate documentation to justify inclusion or exceptional significance, issues of integrity, and demolition. In the future, additional research or, in some cases, restoration may result in additional properties being submitted.

Also, references to properties that have been withdrawn have not been deleted from the text. A list of the sixty-one nominated properties appears on Continuation sheets 1-4 of Item 7. Properties already listed on the National Register (4), determined eligible (5), or submitted for determination of eligibility due to owner objection (8) are indicated on these continuation sheets.

Statement of Significance (in one paragraph)

The properties included in this nomination document the evolution and growth of commercial activity in Phoenix from 1880 through 1947. These buildings, ranging from neighborhood grocery stores to prominent high-rise office towers, reflect this entire developmental spectrum. The nomination divides the buildings into five categories:

High-rise , Townsite

Warehouse Neighborhood Strip Commercial

and four distinctive phases and periods of Phoenix's growth:

Settlement 1870-1886Victorian 1887-1911Early Urban Center 1912-1931Mature Urban Center 1932-1947

Buildings are discussed both in terms of their relationship to these growth stages and their association with the various building types and architectural styles relevant to each period.

The sixty-one buildings included within the nomination appear to meet the criteria for their association with the broadly defined theme of Phoenix commercial develop ment and their established historic/neighborhood contexts.
