Background of restructuring SGSY as NRLM

Review of SGSY ( by MoRD) reveals following mixed picture:

Widespread acceptance of the need of organising the poor into SHGs

250 lakh of rural poor households brought under SHG & still 450 lakh more to be covered

Insufficient Capacity Building Insufficient investment for the building Community

NRLM Mission

To reduce poverty by enabling the poor households to access gainful self-employment and skilled wage employment opportunities, resulting in appreciable improvement in their livelihoods on a sustainable basis, through building strong grassroots institutions of the poor.
