Po licy Towa rd Japan In view of developm ents since NSSM 122 and Japan' s evolving view of its new role in international affairs and in its relations with other major world po wers includin g the U. S., the Pr esident has dire ct ed a revi ew of our po li cy toward Japan. Particula r att ention should be g iv en to po tential conflicts between U . S. and Japanese ob jec t iv es and p oli ci es o ver th e ne xt fi ve ye a rs, and to alternati v e m eans by which we mi ght deal with them. Th e study should: Identify basi c U. S. interests toward Japan . Iden ti fy Jap anese interests a n d o b j e ct i v e s o v er th e next fi ve year s, along wi th po ssible ch a nge s in Ja pan 1 s p ost-Vietnam war for eign p oli cies. -- Out li ne th e U. In v i ew of developments s i n c e NSSM 122 and Japan' s evolving view of its new role in international affairs and in its relations with other major world pow e r s including the U. S., the President has dire cte d a revi ew of our poli c y toward J a p a n . Particula r attention should be g iven to p otential conflicts between U .
