Youve heard that in Colorado andWashington State just south o the bor-der, voters approved legalization omarijuana even or recreational (not justmedical) use in 2012.

We in Canada lag behind these US-neighbours when it comes to sof drugslike marijuana. Sure, theres been talkabout letting police just issue a ticket tosomeone ound in possession o a bit opot, say 28 or 30 grams. But that would

be a ar cry rom legalizing possession.And even that small step, which wouldmake simple possession a minor inrac-tion, hasnt been taken.

In act, simple possession o even a tinyamount o pot is still not just illegal itsa crime in Canada (some medical excep-tions apart). A rst offence can lead toa maximum ne o $1,000 and a maxi-mum jail term o six months. Penaltiesincrease or repeat offenders.

And there are stiffer sentences i yourecharged with possession or the purposeso trafficking, or with trafficking (basi-cally, selling the stuff).

O all the provinces in Canada, BritishColumbia amous or its BC Bud has one o the highest rates o chargingpeople with possession.

Now, youre not likely to be hit withthe maximum penalties i convicted o

simple possession or the rst time. Butthere are still nasty consequences.

For one thing, a conviction results ina criminal record. Tis may have to bedisclosed on employment applications,so can hurt your ability to get a job. Also,you may aferwards not be able to get

into many countries, particularly theU.S., because o travel restrictions. Inshort, a small baggie o the stuff, maybe

just a riendly gif, can end up causingyou a long-lasting hangover.

So whats possession, anyway? Basical-ly, based on what police nd (and whatyou say), the police must prove that youhad the stuff on you, like in your pocketsor purse, or that it was under your con-trol (like in your cars glove box) and

that you knew what it was. So you canbe in possession o marijuana even i youdont own the stuff. Police also have toprove in court what the substance was,usually by a test report.

But even i youre caught with somepot, you have some undamental rightsto due process in Canada that may helpyou avoid conviction.

You have the right to remain silent

so dont blab your way into a cones-sion. And you have the right to be pro-tected against unreasonable search andseizure. So i police come to your housewith a search warrant (basically, a judge-approved authorization to search yourhouse) or something else, and theycome across your small stash, the courtmay not allow that into evidence it alldepends. Te court may also look closelyat the inormation used by police to geta judge to approve the search warrant inthe rst place.

Probably the best thing you can do oryoursel i busted or pot possession (orworse) is to exercise your right to call alawyer at the rst possible opportunity and ollow her advice!

Six months into the new Surveillance Nurse programwithin Interior Health, remote telephone checks are hav-ing a positive inuence and helping independent seniorsstay at home longer.

e ocus is on sta e ong-term Home Hea t c ients.Surveillance Nurses phone them to see how they are do-ing at least once every three months and more if required.Clients may also call the nurse when they have questionsor need assistance. Te programs goal is to identify anyissues as soon as possible, to help ensure these independ-ent clients continue to do well living at home. Te regularcalls ensure we are being proactive and supporting clientsso they continue to be lower needs for as long as possible,said Whitby. For example they may need encouragementto increase their activity level, to socialize more, or to quit

smoking. Or they may benet from other support services.Surveillance Nurses are currently located in Williams

Lake; Kamloops; Vernon; Kelowna; Penticton; Cranbrookand Castlegar. Tey support approximately 280 clients.As the program grows, they will continue to expand theirreach across the health authority.

Terapeutic Riding Camps2014 Equine Empowerment Camps are being offered for

West Kootenay area youth from ages ve to 19 at the PassCreek Regional Exhibition grounds near Castlegar. Tesecamps are free of charge and sponsored by Columba Basinrust, Arrow Lakes Terapeutic Riding Association andPass Creek Regional Exhibition Society.

Camp participants will receive two 1.5 hour lessons percamp, which will be tailored to each individual and in-clude working with horses, whether that means riding,grooming or simply learning about the horse. We aim tocreate a safe and comfortable environment for each indi-

vidual participant. Camp dates are Tursday, August 21 to

Saturday, August 23 and Friday, September 26 to Sunday,September 28.
