Science Camps Hit Grand Forks And Christina Lake
Selkirk College will be running 3 science camps this summer for youth ages 6 to 12 years of age. Camps are 3 days in duration. Two will be in Grand Forks and one at Christina Lake (Christina Lake Welcome Centre).
Th e camps have a fun, interactive learning environment which includes some basic electricity, chemistry, physics, and biology. Participants will be given lots of opportun-ity for hands on experience. Local science teacher, Haley Rymer, is excited about the opportunity to expose chil-dren to the fun of science at a younger age.
Th is program is supported by Community Futures Boundary, Kootenay Association of Science and Technol-ogy, Regional District of Kootenay Boundary in partner-ship with Selkirk College. Dates are Wednesday, July 4 to Friday, July 6, Tuesday, July 24 to Th ursday, July 26 and Tuesday, August, 28 to Th ursday, August 30.

Pied Pumkin Returns To VallicanKick off your shoes and hold onto your hat. Beloved BC
folk trio Pied Pumkin is back for a brief reunion tour this July, including a concert Th ursday, July 19 at the Vallican Whole! Th e doors open at 7:30 pm with the show starting at 8 pm.
Rick Scott (dulcimer), Joe Mock (guitar and piano) and Shari Ulrich (violin, piano, fl ute, dulcimer, guitar) are in-famous for their fearless arrangements, fl awless harmon-ies and theatrical hi-jinx, Pied Pumkin pioneered rogue folk in BC and served as a soundtrack for the ‘70s. Th ey have toured far and wide and sold over 30,000 LPS from the stage.
Th e group has long been a beloved fi xture of the BC and Canadian folk music scene. Th ey fi rst performed at the Vallican Whole when it was still just a hole – helping to raise funds to put a roof on the building. Since then, they’ve managed to return to the Whole whenever they re-unite. Why? Because it’s the perfect place to hear the Pumkin in their natural environment. Several of their songs are sourced in the Kootenays, such as Kootenay Bark and Orville Goes To Th e Country.
When Shari left the Pumkin to join the Hometown Band, Rick and Joe continued touring as Pied Pear. Pied Pumkin reunited in 1998 aft er a 20 years hiatus, releas-ing the CD retrospective Plucking DeVine in 1998 and a live album Pied Alive in 2000. In 2006 their fi rst children’s album, Pumkids, won the 2006 Canadian Folk Music Award and Parents Choice honours in the US. In 2011 Pied Pear had its fi rst reunion tour, releasing a Collectors Edition of two LPs on a single CD.

Shimmy Mob Success For Local Services!
Soul Fire Dance is greatly pleased to announce the suc-cess of the Shimmy Mob 2012 event!
We aim to raise awareness about violence against women and their children and to bring funds to local societies to support affi liated services. Included in our local Shimmy Mob campaign are Castlegar and District Community
Services Society, Nelson Community Services Centre and Trail Fair Society.
Donors were allowed the opportunity to designate which services they donate to. Volunteers worked hard and diligently to learn the fl ash mob choreography, col-lect pledges individually and gather donations at our fl ash mob locations. Th is hard work resulted in the successful fund raising totalling $2475. And all dancers and specta-tors had a fun a lively experience as well!
Soul Fire Dance is dedicated to supporting empower-ment to women and inspiring self awareness and confi -dence through the sacred art of dance.

Kootenay Lake Water LevelsWith the recent rainfall and high snowpack this spring,
there has been some concern from local area citizens re-garding how Kootenay Lake operates and why the water level is near a 40-year high.
While we understand that the high water level is a con-cern for fl ooding, the conditions that we fi nd ourselves in today are as a result of natural conditions.
Th e snow pack at Red Fish Creek in 2012, just north of Nel-son, BC, was the highest snow pack on record. Th e amount of precipitation that the region has experienced in June is forecast to be the most precipitation we have ever received in any individual month, including the winter months. Th ese conditions are not isolated to the Kootenay Lake region, as fl ooding has been a problem all across the province.
As many of our readers know, FortisBC operates four dams on the Kootenay River. FortisBC’s Corra Linn dam is the closest to Kootenay Lake and can operate as the con-trol point for water fl ows out of Kootenay Lake.
However, just upstream from Corra Linn is Grohman Narrows, which creates a physical restriction of water fl owing out of Kootenay Lake. Since mid-March, FortisBC has been operating Corra Linn dam so that the maximum amount of water can fl ow out of Kootenay Lake, as limited by Grohman Narrows.
Th ere are two dams upstream that also play a role in Kootenay Lake levels – BC Hydro’s Duncan Dam and the Libby Dam operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engin-eers. It’s estimated that without Libby and Duncan dams in place today, that the current lake level would be approxi-
mately seven feet higher with the natural infl ow condi-tions we have seen this year.
FortisBC holds the International Joint Commission (IJC) order for Kootenay Lake, which was established in part to ensure that Kootenay Lake peak elevations would be lower than if the dam had not been constructed. Each year, For-tisBC presents its annual operation of Kootenay Lake to the IJC Kootenay Lake Board of Control, which is then fol-lowed by a public meeting. Th is year the IJC meeting will be held in Bonner’s Ferry in early fall and FortisBC welcomes all concerned lake residents to attend. NDCU Donates $10,000 To Local Skate Park Society
Th ursday June 21st is known internationally as “Go Skateboarding Day” and can now be recognized as the day Nelson & District Credit Union (NDCU) stepped up to help Kootenay Lake Outdoor Skate Park Society (KLOS-PS) members realize their dream of an outdoor skate park for Nelson. Tom Atkins of NDCU met with Rob Levesque and several local skaters at the foot of Baker Street to cele-brate the announcement of the donation of $10,000.
Th e relationship between NDCU and KLOSPS goes back 10 years when Nelson skate park pioneers approached the Credit Union requesting some help, refl ects Tom Atkins of NDCU. “It all started with some in-kind donations of binders, pens and some photocopying. Th ere was an in-formal group of skaters, parents and community members that got the ball rolling with a meeting at the old Lord Nel-son banquet hall. NDCU recognized the tireless commit-ment of this group early on, and we are happy to be here today with this announcement of $10,000 for the Nelson outdoor skate park.”
NDCU’s commitment to youth goes far beyond fi nancial literacy and scholarships. An investment by credit union members in an asset such as this park will add signifi cantly to the vitality of this community. Youth arts, culture, so-
cial responsibility and recreation initiatives are also widely supported through their community investment program.
Robert Levesque, society president adds, “Th e future looks bright. Th is has been one heck of a year, we got our location, we’ve acquired a design and the community sup-port has been phenomenal. Summertime Fun For Kids Th is July promises to be a great opportunity for kids to
experience the valley at its fi nest. Slocan Valley Recreation is off ering a wide range of programs to make sure they have a great experience with excellent instructors.
If they’re into skateboarding and ready to take their skills to a new level, Skateboard Camp off ers a chance to improve their ride. Th ere will be road trips to other skate parks, barbeques, and swag like you wouldn’t believe! A crew of local skaters and Shandy Campos of BC Action Adventures will be on hand to oversee all the fun. Th e pro-gram is timed from 10:30am – 5pm daily from Monday July 16th to Friday the 20th so riders can make it out from Nelson and Castlegar via the local bus system.
Back by popular demand, Bugs Birds and Bees-Artist’s Summer Camp (July 16th to 20th ) brings kids together with local artists and movement instructors for an experi-ence that will inspire and entertain.
If they love the great outdoors and are between the ages of 9 to 13, have them join our Footsteps Outdoor Summer Camp. From July 25th to 28 they’ll hike, mountain bike, canoe and more.

Slocan Lake Dance CampLyle Clarke hails from the Edmonton area, but is a long
time summer visitor to New Denver. Lyle will be teaching advanced smooth workshops at the
Slocan Lake Dance Camp from July 26 to July 29 at the newly restored historic Bosun Hall. Revolver At Kootenay Lakeview Lodge
Trying to recapture the magic of what has become known locally as the best outdoor concert of 2011 – RE-VOLVER – the greatest Beatles Tribute Band in the World – according to radio icon Red Robinson – is making it’s way back to Kootenay Lakeview Lodge in Balfour for a return show Friday, July 6.
Th e band from Vancouver covers the 3 decades of music with 4 costume changes with members: Mike Sicoli, Mick Dalla Vee, Rocket Norton on drums and Skip Prest, all experienced pros capturing the music so well you truly can “close your eyes” as the song goes and be transported back through time.
And this year will be even bigger and better claims owner Reg Clarkson. Th e Nelson Grizzlies Rugby Club has stepped up to present the show this year and will benefi t from an outdoor beer garden they will host on site. “Th is was not available to us last year,” states Clarkson, “so this is a great improvement to an already great party.”
Nelson Grizzlie board member Brian Garvin Jr. who at-tended last years show with his family says “When we had the opportunity to participate in this event it was a no-brainer for our club. You Won’t Want To Miss WaymanOne Book, One Kootenay shortlisted author Tom Way-
man reads from his book of short fi ction, Boundary Coun-try, Saturday, July 7 at 2 pm at the Nakusp Public Library.
Tom Wayman’s Boundary Country is a tour of this neck of the woods and beyond through a collection of stories that explore boundaries both human and geographical, to which Wayman brings his gift for insightful observation and wry humour.
Half of Boundary Country’s stories are set in Southeast-ern BC, from a mystery amid the pine uplands near Osoy-oos, to a community meeting in a hall above Nelson’s Baker Street. Other settings include Toronto, Vancouver, Eastern Europe in the 1930s, and the U.S. during the Civil War.
A multiple award-winner, Wayman has penned more than 20 books of poetry, essays, and fi ction. He taught writing at Nelson’s David Th ompson University Centre, at various colleges on the Coast and in the Okanagan, and at the University of Calgary. His most recent collection of poetry, Dirty Snow, was released in 2012 by Harbour Publishing.
One Book, One Kootenay (OBOK), a project of the Kootenay Library Federation, is a region-wide book club that celebrates the work of the talented writers living in the Kootenay Boundary. Two other great books, Rita Moir’s Th e Th ird Crop, and Sister, No Sister by Jennifer Craig round out the shortlist. In addition to Wayman’s reading, Moir and Craig will appear virtually through two short fi lms created for the Kootenay Library Federation by Kootenay fi lmmaker Amy Bohigian.
One Book, One Kootenay shortlisted books are chosen by a panel of learned librarians. Now, it’s up to readers to vote for the book all Kootenay booklovers should read this year. All of the OBOK shortlisted books are available in your local library.
