Hugh Walker - Citizen of the YearHugh moved to Kaslo in 1991 and immediately became immersed inKaslo’s multifaceted culture. Hugh has never been known to refuse helpto anyone; he is a very kind, caring and generous man. A few of the reasonsHugh was nominated are (in no particular order):

He has tutored/mentored kids; he has been on the Kaslo Restorative Justice Committee; hasbeen a volunteer and a proud supporter of Kaslo Community Church. Hugh has been involvedin the monthly men’s breakfast for years. He was a director with the Kaslo Housing Society (he

held many garage sales at his home for this society) and was president of the Seniors Group.He has been involved with the Masonic Lodge for over 50 years. He was active in the RoyalArt Lodge. Over the years he has provided many, many rides to fellow Kaslovians who neededa ride, and at 92 years of age he is still driving. He visits many ‘shut-ins’ at their home.

Hugh served as the chairman and as a director on the Kaslo Victorian Hospital Board and wasa principal player in the hospital expansion years ago. He has volunteered at the Kaslo Extend-ed Health unit for over 500 weeks and every Sunday he can be found helping out at the churchservice held there. In fact, if the appointed offi cial doesn’t show, Hugh has been known toconduct the entire service himself. Also, he has volunteered to be the communication personfor the BC Provincial Program if a disaster should ever hit Kaslo.

He has been a participant on Kaslo’s Offi cial Community Plan committee; was a member of the

Ham Radio Club in Nelson, and with his knowledge of ham radios has repaired many for fellow Kaslovians, at no charge. Hugh is a ServiceOffi cer for the Legion and the Honour Guard contact person for the presentation on Remembrance Day. Always a strong advocate for veterans,in the summer of 2009, Hugh and another gentleman (Jim Tinkess) discovered that a Kaslo WW1 Veteran, Willam Dunn, had been buried inan unmarked grave. With the help of a historical researcher, the two of them were able to obtain funds to cover the cost of a beautifully engravedgranite headstone for this veteran.

We could not have a better Kaslo booster. Every chance he gets to promote our village, he sings our praises!

Yes, Hugh Walker has been an amazing volunteer in our town, but to most he has been a loyal friend, and would lend anear or a shoulder to lean on to anyone in need. His generosity has shown no limits.Tank you Hugh, for all you have done!
