hank you or your interest in New Horizon School, Irvine. Youll fnd in these pages
an excellent introduction to the school, but its just that: an introduction. I invite
you to get to know New Horizon by attending an Open House event, scheduling a
tour, or talking with the amilies o current students and alumni. I know that you will discover,
as I do each and every day, the qualities that can be described but not ully captured in print:
an extraordinary community o parents, teachers, and students who truly care or one another;
who enjoy learning together; who are secure and proud American Muslims. You will hear the
sounds o collaboration and laughter in equal measure with the silence o deep concentration,
and the delighted aha when students master a new concept. There is no other school in
Orange County that oers New Horizons unique model: the best o an independent school
education imbued with Islamic aith and values. I look orward to telling you and showingyou more o what New Horizon has to oer!

ew Horizon offers the best of both worlds:
an independent school education grounded
in Islamic values or approximately 200 girls
and boys in preschool through sixth grade. The schools
highly qualifed, credentialed teachers provide a challenging
academic program - one that exceeds the Caliornia State
Content Standards or Education - in a positive, nurturing
environment which emphasizes the process o learning in
addition to the outcome. A selective admissions process
brings students together with peers who have demonstrated
strength o character, the desire to learn, and academic ability.
Small class sizes encourage student participation and enables
teachers to understand and support students as individuals.
Students develop a lielong love or learning and essential
leadership skills such as critical thinking, analytical reasoning,
eective communication, and problem solving.

ew Horizons solid, well-rounded program is
accredited by the California Association of
Independent Schools (CAIS) and the Western
Association o Schools and Colleges (WASC) and its eective-
ness is shown by student outcomes. On the ERB, a rigorous
standardized assessment used by independent schools across
the country, New Horizon students score better than the national
average in every category - consistently achieving special
distinction in Mathematics and Word Mechanics. New Horizon
graduates are prepared or a number o choices in secondary
school and typically enter highly reputable private schools or
qualiy into the honors programs at their local public school.
Most importantly, New Horizon students grow into confdent,
conscientious American Muslim citizens who are well prepared
or the challenges o high school, university, and beyond.
N
New Horizon is committed
to providing students with an
excellent academic education
and rm grounding in moral
and ethical values. New Horizon
fosters a dedication to God
through virtuous living in a

Studies, Arabic, and Quran. The aim o the
school is to ensure that each childs academic develop-
ment goes hand in hand with a growing understanding
o God, Islam, and confdence in his or her identity as a
aithul American Muslim. Islamic values, such as honesty,
respect, responsibility, and sel-discipline, are woven into
all daily activities and interactions at New Horizon. Each
month, the entire school community explores one value in-
depth, drawing on stories rom the Prophets and the Quran
as well as real-lie examples to deepen their understanding.

Technology
t New Horizon, students fourish in an
environment designed to support academic
excellence and Islamic values. Current editions
o textbooks and cutting-edge technology engage students
in new ideas and hone their research skills. The library
is equipped with twenty wireless, remote access laptop
computers that are available to students o all grade levels.
In the upper grades, classrooms are equipped with
iPads and 1-to-1 laptops which aord students the
opportunity to create and share projects with peers
and mentors around the world; or example, Skype
sessions have been used to have book discussions with
Canadian students, to ask a NASA astronaut questions about
space, and to recite Quran to a Sheikh at Al-Azhar University.

What does it mean to be an independent Islamic school?
Only 1% o all schools in the United States are considered
independent, meaning they are non-proft and accredited by an
afliate o the National Association o Independent Schools. These
schools are among the nations most distinguished schools, most
o them with long histories, strong reputations, and signifcant
endowments. Independent schools receive no public unding;
rather, they are supported solely by tuition and additional
contributions rom constituents - parents, grandparents, alumni, and
community members. New Horizon is currently the only
independent Islamic school in Orange County.

Field Trips
ew Horizon students supplement the class-
room learning with regular feld trips to the
many resources that Southern Caliornia
has to oer. Younger students usually visit Amys Farm,
the Bowers Museum, and participate in the Trabuco Field
Study Program. Upper elementary students oten take
advantage o educational programs oered at the
Environmental Nature Center, Caliornia Science Center,
Catalina Island, and Big Rock Creek. These trips allow
students to see animals in natural habitats, participate in
lab experiments, and see history come to lie, providing
hands-on demonstrations o concepts and ideas introduced
in the social studies and science curriculum.
N
All students at New Horizon participate in
music, art, and physical education. During
music instruction, students practice their critical
thinking and problem solving skills as they learn to
read, repeat, and create simple rhythmic patterns.
Using a tiered approach, students are exposed at
each level with more challenging choral songs and
musical note reading, culminating with students
being able to read and perorm using traditional
band instruments.
The art program allows students to explore
art history and culture through the prism ofartistic pieces. Throughout the year, students
ocus on the elements o art such as lines, shapes,
colors, value, orm, space, and texture, as well
as the principles o art such as rhythm, balance,
movement, harmony, variety, emphasis, and unity.
Since Islamic art also utilizes these components,
this helps students build a bridge to Islamic art and
Arabic calligraphy.
In the physical education program, students
work to develop gross motor skills and learn
to work cooperatively with others. Fundamental
skills such as dribbling, bouncing a ball and jump
roping are practiced at the lower grade levels, while
the upper grades work on playing team sports.
Students are also challenged to take responsibil-
ity or their health by exercising and making wise
ood choices.
New Horizon students also have the opportunity
to explore personal interests and develop social
skills through a wide range o optional ater-school
enrichment courses including chess, soccer,
dance, taekwondo, and much more!

t New Horizon, students learn about social responsibility and
practice leadership in the classroom, in the school, and in the
larger community. New Horizon incorporates The Leader in
Me across all grade levels, a program that promotes leadership, respect,
communication, and time management skills. Based on the well-known 7
Habits of Highly Effective People philosophy, it teaches the lielong skills
o sel-condence, sel-reliance, and sel-discipline, while also teaching stu-
dents how to be become successul leaders. Also, beginning in third grade,
classroom elections are held to select class representatives. The entire
student body then elects a Student Council Board comprising o sixth
grade students. Student Council members meet regularly during the school
year to organize activities that build the school community and raise unds
to benet a charitable organization o their choosing. Older students also
lead prayer on a daily basis and serve as mentors to the younger students,
providing them with guidance on proper behavior and respect as they
interact with their peers and adults. Numerous events outside the school
allow students to stretch their imaginations and strengthen their
relationships with a diverse group o peers. Each year, the Johns Hopkins
University Center or Talented Youth (CTY) perorms a Talent Search to
identiy, assess, and recognize the academic abilities o highly able
students. Over a third o New Horizon students are chosen each year to
participate in this program, scoring in the top 5% on the CTP4, a national
standardized test taken annually in the Spring. In addition, students also
participate in an Academic Pentathlon, Science Fair, the Orange County Depart-
ment o Educations Spelling Bee sponsored by the Scripps National Spelling
Bee, and the National Hassan Hathout Legacy Foundations essay competition.

initiatives such as the Irvine Community Harvest Cup Soccer
Tournament and the Irvine Global Village Festival.

peers who share similar values and visions or their uture. With
this oundation, lielong riendships emerge with others who
share and support their belies. Students have a strong sense
o sel within a school environment that is sae and respects
their individuality. Our program caters to a very diverse student
population with over twenty nationalities represented, unied
by the aith o Islam. Within our environment, young learners will
