NEW TITLES www.pelicanpub.com and epelican.com DELLA RAYE A Girl Who Grew Up in Hell and Emerged Whole By Gary Penley The inspiring story of one woman’s struggle to main- tain her dignity and strength while confined to a mental institution in the Depression-era South. In 1929, the Great Depression had just begun, making more difficult Richard Rogers’ always-challenging task of keeping his family fed on sharecropper’s wages. He decided to take his sis- ters, Ruby and Dovie, along with Ruby’s children, Della Raye and Frank Jr., to live at the Partlow State Asylum for Mental Deficients in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Della Raye was a normal, intelligent child. The lie it took to get Della Raye into the institution—that she was seven when in fact, she was only four—would contribute to her repeatedly failing the IQ tests that might have released her, but even so, where would she have gone? For twenty years, Della Raye would be subjected to various forms of abuse and neglect that might have caused a lesser person to give up. Undaunted by those who often told her she would never amount to anything, that she was incapable of learning beyond the sim- plest of tasks, and that she would never live outside Partlow, Della Raye continued to fight to be treated with respect. In a bizarre twist of fate twenty years after she first entered Partlow, Della Raye was released with no money, no education, and only a small paper sack of possessions and told she was never to live in Tuscaloosa again. She worked hard, but her dif- ficulties were not ended with her release. Eventually, she edu- cated herself, married and raised a family, and managed her own business. Della Raye lives in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, where she enjoys visits with the sick, church activities, and social outings with friends. American history might have been different if Jeb Stuart’s cav-alry, ordered by Robert E. Lee to attack the Union forces’s rear, had succeeded. Instead, fate intervened in the form of GeorgeArmstrong Custer. The resulting battle, pitting two of America’smost gifted military heroes against each other, decided the fateof the Civil War.

Paul D. Walker served in the army’s armored cavalry forthirty years, including two tours in Viet Nam. 96 pp. 51/2 x 81/2 7 b/w photos 4 maps Appendix IndexISBN: 1-58980-012-5 $14.95 pb original March 2002

THE BOMBARDMENT OF CHARLESTON 1863-1865

By W. Chris Phelps

Historical account of this important Civil War siege.

Union forces began bombarding in the summer of 1863. Usingthe latest weapons—including the eight-inch Swamp Angel, capable of hurling 150-pound shells over five miles—Northerntroops pounded the city continuously until February 1865.

Using military records, diaries, and even vintage photographs, the author explores this period through eyewitness accounts. He agrees with many contemporary opinions that this deliberateand wanton destruction was a Union attempt to “makeCharleston pay for her sins.”

W. Chris Phelps, co-owner of Charleston’s largest walking-tour company, sees vivid reminders of the Civil War daily.144 pp. 51/2 x 81/2 5 illus. 11 b/w photos 7 mapsNotes Biblio. Index 2nd ed.; First Pelican ed.ISBN: 1-58980-028-1 $17.95 pb original March 2002
