You might feel that you’ve stepped into a postcard. Newcastle’s horseshoe bay is overlooked by Northern Ireland’s highest peak, Slieve Donard, in the stunning Mourne Mountains. There’s a great view whichever direction you turn, from blue seas and golden beaches, to glorious peaks topped with mist and threaded with dry stone walls and rivers.

Take a walk by the river, hike through the forest, shop, eat or stroll along the beach to the sand dunes of the nearby nature reserve at Murlough Bay.

There’s world-famous golf on offer at the Royal County Down course. Northern Ireland has some of world’s finest golfing, and it’s hard to imagine a course more spectacularthan the links at Royal County Down.

Whether you’re looking for the serene solitude of the highest peak or the simple pleasure of an ice-cream on the seafront, Newcastle has it all. As you discover the town, you’re just as likely to come across serious hikers as families on a day out at the seaside.

The sculpture trail on the seafront walkways is traffic-free, although you can feel the wind in your hair on your bike or scooter. In the summer, you can swim in the open airRock Pool on the promenade.

Absorbing the stunning scenery is one delight, but you’ll also find Newcastle is a friendly town with plenty to keep visitors occupied. Read on to find out more about what goes on here.

Public Art‘Words in the wind’ welcomes you as you enter Newcastle from Dundrum. Part elegant flower and part kids’ windmill, this sculpture shifts with the breeze. The seafront walkways are celebrated for their fascinating art. ‘Global journeys’ shimmering sphere reflects the beautiful landscape - kids (and adults) love seeing their own image in the globe. The Percy French statue celebrates the man who wrote those famous words about Newcastle, where “the Mountains of Mourne sweep down to the sea”.

Tails of Flight

Charles Normandale – “Tails of Flight”Downs Road end of the Promenade

Capturing the spirit of flight with a maritime twist, this piece is an obvious reference to the world famous Harry Ferguson and his pioneering flight along the beach at Newcastle in a monoplane which he designed and built himself.

The highly polished and textured stainless steel wings of thissculpture are shaped to reflect the maximum of light - day and night, and are approximately 9 meters high at the top wing and 6.5 meters at the lowest, thereby acting as a marker for the Promenade at all times. The vertical elements are mild steel to withstand the rigorous coastal climate and are painted to signify the sea and sky.

Charles Normandale is one of the UK’s leading Artist Blacksmiths and is based in Hampshire, England. He created the Promenade sculpture with his partner, Julie Brooks-Hill, and other recent commissions include the “Maritime Memorial” in Southampton, ”The Spirits of Lowestoft” in Suffolk and more recently “Across the Sun and Moon” which is the keynote piece of an integrated arts project at the new Downe Hospital in Downpatrick.

Robert McColgan – “Cone of Light” Southern end of the Promenade

+ Marks the physical Gateway to the Mournes

+ The individual visitor or local can appreciate it both at a distance and at close quarters.

+ It forms a strong link to town and mountains as its apex is aligned with the cairn like structure on the summit of Slieve Donard.

+ It creates a strong visual experience and memory for the traveller.

+ It points the way, and with a height of 8.6m, it literally makes a statement about high aspirations.

The use of combined materials, Mourne Granite and mirror polished Stainless Steel, is an extension of the artist’s attention to the physicality of the site.

He has also used voiding to reveal a hyperbolic curve and he feels that this piece of work is a significant step towards the scale and materiality which he hopes to engage with in future work.

The void or light-slit is sighted off the highest point of Slieve Donard which overlooks Newcastle and connects the mountain to the sea. The three parts of the work echo the complex of activity and engagement that is Newcastle today.

Locals, visitors and immigrants mix and thrive in a town where the sense of renewal and optimism is palpable.

The “Cone of Light” through its use of mirroring, complements the work by Chris Wilson entitled “Global Journeys”.

Robert’s recent work includes “Beehives” on the M1 motorway near Balbriggan which was created in collaboration with fellow artist, Irene Benner; and “Scáthán” (meaning Mirror) at New Store Street Plaza in Dublin.

Chris Wilson – “Global Journeys”Central part of the Promenade

+ Complements the landscape design of the promenade

+ The work captures the feeling of solidity together with movement and changing light conditions

+ It is extremely tactile and visually stimulating

+ It reflects land, sky and sea

+ It reflects people and place

+ It represents the migratory return of the Atlantic Salmon to the area

In terms of nature conservation, around 75 km2 of the Eastern Mournes - the uplands - is a Special Area of Conservation under the EU Habitats Directive for significant areas of wet and dry heath and fauna that accompanies the habitat.

Rostrevor Oakwood on the southern boundary is also of European interest, whilst the Shimna and Whitewater rivers provide important habitat for Atlantic Salmon, returning to spawn. On the shore you can see further evidence of fishing in the stone “fish traps”.

The archaeology testifies to the long term occupation of the area and to the traditions, burials and rituals.

The area is particularly rich in cashels – circular stone early Christian farmsteads, often with souterrains. Even the road patterns in parts of the area tell a story, with the less fertile mountain lands having been enriched by seaweeds drawn by the straightest possible routes from the shore.

Chris Wilson’s work is represented in several major public collections, including the Arts Council of England, the Arts Council of Ireland and the Arts Council of Northern Ireland. Past commissions include “Landscape Lines” Translink/Northern Ireland Railways (2003), “River Lines” at Toome Bypass and, more recently “Treelines” at Omagh Arts Centre and “Ocean’s Edge” in Ardglass.

Percy

Killen McKenna – “Percy”Downs Road area of Promenade, close to children’s play park

(William) Percy French (1 May 1854 – 24 January 1920) was one of Ireland's foremost songwriters and entertainers in his day. In more recent times, he has also become known for his watercolour paintings.

Percy French wrote the lyrics to the song "The Mountains of Mourne" in 1896 and it is normally sung to the same traditional melody used by Thomas Moore (1779–1852) for his song "Bendemeer's Stream". Percy French is also the writer of “Phil the Fluther’s Ball” and “Adbul Abulbul Amir” which deals with the Crimean War.

This collaborative sculpture of Kevin Killen and Conor McKenna represents the song’s wistful letter home by way of the stainless steel which is held on edge and engraved with handwritten lyrics to resemble a page. An iconic image of Percy is subtracted from the sheet, allowing a view of the Mournes and linking the man, the scenery and the song.

The words of the song…

You remember young Peter O'Loughlin, of course,Well, now he is here at the head of the force.I met him today, I was crossing the Strand,And he stopped the whole street with a wave of his hand. And there we stood talkin' of days that are gone,

While the whole population of London looked on.But for all these great powers he's wishful like me,To be back where the dark Mourne sweeps down to the sea.

…are representative of French's many works concerning the Irish diaspora. The Mourne Mountains of the title, formed 65 million years ago, are the most picturesque mountain district in Ireland and comprise twelve peaks, seven of which are over 700m with Slieve Donard at 850m Northern Ireland’s tallest mountain.

A number of local people took a keen interest in the commissioning of this piece including BBC Northern Ireland’s David Dunseith and the Percy French Society.

Ron Baird – “Words in the Wind”Roundabout at entrance to town on Dundrum Road

This piece, a 12m high kinetic sculpture, by Canadian sculptor, Ron Baird, makes an impressive statement at the entry point to the town. It reflects the natural landscape and the cultural landscape in terms of people, language and song. It literally is powered by the wind, creating movement and interest and the petals are engraved with Celtic and Neolithic drawings. Elegant and simple in form, it suggests both the rugged nature of the Mournes and the fragility of the flora and fauna of this special place. It also is reminiscent of hand held windmills which are still a favourite children’s seaside toy.

Maeve King – “Harbour Views”Newcastle Harbour

Designed by Seaforde artist, Maeve King, each 10' x 6' mural is made of Venetian and American glass. The murals commemorate the sometimes tragic maritime history of Newcastle. “I wanted to show Newcastle as a fishing village, before it became a tourist destination following the introduction of the railway and the Slieve Donard Hotel,” she says.

“The SS Great Britain story is a good one, but in the second panel I wanted to depict the fishermen at work - pulling in their nets with other boats on the horizon and the waves rising ominously in the corner”.

“While it shows the men at work, it also recounts the great tragedy of 1843, when these men went to their deaths at sea.

It's a celebration and a tribute to those men and their families. I felt that there was an interesting ambiguity there”.

This dramatic scene records a major loss of life for the local fishing fleet in an incident in which over 70 lost their lives, with many local families affected. The nearby “Widows’ Row” is named for the survivors of this major local catastrophe.

1

Harry Ferguson Commemorative StoneThis commemorative stone recalls the historic air flight made by Harry Ferguson along the beach in 1910. The flight earned him a prize of £100 from the Urban Council. This County Down man is usually remembered for his development of the agricultural tractor.

2

Newcastle CentreThe building occupied by the Newcastle Centre is known locally as the Annesley Mansions . It is on the site of a succession of castles and fortified houses, one of which gave its name to the town. The last of the castles was demolished in 1835 to make way for the Annesley Arms Hotel. To the right of the Centre is the Tropicana Pool. This building, the granite portico of which has been retained as the entrance to the pool, was originally a bath house where hot and cold sea water baths were available.

3

Former Annesley Arms Hotel Stable BlockThis building, currently an amusement arcade, was the stable block for the horses and carriages of the guests staying in the Annesley Arms Hotel. Facing the old stable block is Clare Lodge, at one time a private school known as The College. It went on to become a convent and is now a holiday home run by the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.

History & HeritageNewcastle’s heritage reflects the coastline’s importance. Several fortified houses and castles remain nearby, while the old railway company built the Slieve Donard Hotel. The harbour and pier recalls the town’s background as a fishing community. Open-air bathing and mountain walks remain as fine today as in time past.

4

The RockOriginally the road was on the inland side and it was only in the last century that what is now the main road was cut through the rock itself. From the top of the rock there are good views of the town.

Below the rock, salt used to be extracted from the sea water and, when the tide is out, two curving walls of loose stones, known as 'Lady Annesley's Fish Traps' can be seen.

5

The Rock Swimming PoolThis open-air sea water swimming pool was opened in 1932 and remains popular to this day. In times past the area below the Rock was reserved as a 'Ladies Bathing Place'.

It was provided with bathing boxes for changing in and was supervised by an attendant.

6

SS Great Britain AnchorThe anchor is believed to have been used on the first propeller driven iron-built ship, the SS Great Britain.

The ship went aground in Dundrum Bay in 1846. The anchor was recovered by local fishermen and is a reminder of this dramatic event.

7

Newcastle HarbourThe harbour was once the scene of great activity. It provided the focal point for the export of granite setts and kerbstones along with potatoes and timber. Landings at the harbour included white fish, coal and slates.

The pier itself, constructed in the 19th century, is partly paved with granite setts. The protective breakwater in the south made the harbour a safe haven.

A walk to the end of the breakwater provides an impressive view of Dundrum Bay, against a backdrop of Slieve Croob and the Dromara Mountains to the north.

8

Widow's RowThis terrace of twelve small houses with dormer windows highlights a story repeated in many fishing communities.

The houses were built by public subscription to house widows and dependants of the forty-six men lost in a fishing disaster on Friday 13th January 1842.

Local tradition has it that the haddock shoals, which were sought by these fishermen, have deserted Dundrum Bay since that time.

9

Coastguard VillasThe large granite building, situated above the main road, just south of the harbour, is the former Coastguard Station built in the 1850s. Its size testifies to the importance of the coastline in the view of the authorities, especially as far as smuggling was concerned.

The station was sympathetically converted to housing use in the 1980s.

10

King StreetThe attractive views from King Street have resulted in much development and you will see a great variety of houses, old and new. It was here in King Street, directly above the harbour, that a mineral railway from the quarry on Thomas' Mountain beyond the street had its terminus.

On the lower part of the street, on the corner, note the milestone with 24 carved into it. This shows a distance of 24 miles from Newry.

11

Donard ParkThe park was opened in 1951 and gives access to mountain walks which start at the first bridge up the Glen River.

13

Slieve Donard HotelThe large red brick hotel with a central tower and spire dominates the landscape around Newcastle so can be viewed from many points around the town and beyond.

It was buit in 1898 by the Belfast and County Down Railway Company.

14

Clough Castle An excellent example of an Anglo-Norman earthwork castle with mount (motte), stone tower and an outer enclosure (bailey).

The Castle is located in a commanding position at the junction of an important driving route.

12

Old Railway StationThe construction of this building marked an important point in the history of Newcastle.

In 1906, the Great Northern Railway joined the Belfast and County Down Railway in opening services to tourists from all over Ireland.

Train services ceased to operate in the 1950s when the old station became a bus station. It was subsequently converted into a supermarket.
