By Jay Adams CEG CORRESPONDENT F&W Equipment Corp. is a highly- regarded firm that has served the Connecticut market since 1939. F&W, or Fun at Work Since 1939, has been as pliable with the changing demands of its eight decades of operation as the oven-hot iron the company shaped and welded when it first opened its doors on the eve of World War II. Founder Harold O. Funk originally opened F&W Welding Service and saw demand surge during the Great War, when iron and steel were needed for multiple military and stateside rea- sons. During the war, Funk rose to the occasion, working with iconic Electric Boat to create innovative, life-saving submarine tech- nology. After the war, F&W changed gears and began providing equipment and equipment service for the surge in post-war construction. This became a popular addition to the already established repair work the company was known for. In 1955, F&W Equipment Corp. moved from its historic New Haven, Conn., location in Wooster Square to a new home in Orange, Conn. In 1965, the firm moved to its current location at 164 Boston Post Road. For three generations, F&W Equipment Corp. has remained a family-owned busi- ness committed to delivering the best in equipment sales, rentals, parts and service. Harold’s son Roger came into the busi- ness in 1963 with a metallurgical engineer- ing degree. Roger understood the metal fab- rication aspect of the business in depth, but embraced and drove the necessary changes to becoming a construction equipment deal- er. For five decades, he has achieved many successes and attained many awards. He has been awarded numerous distinc- tions from the Orange Chamber of Commerce, West Haven Rotary and also from the Orange Business and Development for his volunteer work and a F&W Equipment Corp. business of the year(s). During his tenure, he alsohas garnered many distinctions for his performancefrom Case, Kubota, Samsung and Indeco. Fordecades, he has been active in many associationssuch as Associated Equipment Distributors (AED),Northeast Equipment Dealers Association (NEDA),NFIB and Connecticut Business and IndustryAssociation (CBIA).“We’re proud of our history and proud of the part

we’ve played in helping to build Connecticut,” saidPresident Roger Funk, the second generation, whohas been at the helm for a speck shy of 50 years.

Changing the Local IndustryFounder Harold Funk was an innovator. In 1956

he took his welding experience and began applyingit by installing loaders and backhoe attachmentsonto Porsche tractors during a time when the loaderbackhoe was not commonFunk had the desire and the knowledge to adapt these

crude attachments onto tractors to make them useful tools forthe construction contractor and farmer. He demonstrated tolocal contractors how to work more efficiently with specificmachinery — the right tool for the job — to make them moresuccessful. Funk quickly began attracting construction con-tractors as customers and showed that he could serve theirneeds. After more than 10 years in New Haven, F&W also

became an Allis Chalmers dealer and Funk’s reputation grewfrom being a metal fabricator to a construction equipmentdealer. He and his family continued to grow, selling and

servicing loader backhoes, articulatedwheel loaders, dozers and crawlerloaders. He soon began developing a reputation for serviceamong all site contractors in southern Connecticut. In 1973, F&W became a Case construction equipment

dealer. “Our Allis Chalmers customers soon began to realize the

quality, reliability and breadth of the Case Brand,” saidRoger Funk. “Customers began buying the Case 580 loaderbackhoe and quickly found that it was the Swiss army knifethat they had been needing. This would be the one machinethat they needed to do a wide variety of jobs in a variety ofconditions.”

Adapting With the TimesFor more than 73 years, Connecticut contractors

such as road builders, demolition contractors, environmental contractors, home builders, com-mercial site developers, municipalities, large andsmall utilities, landscapers, snow removal workersand many others, have relied on the equipment andservices provided by the F&W team.To better serve the construction industry F&W

Equipment Corp. became a dealer for CaseConstruction equipment, Kubota tractors and con-struction equipment, Doosan construction equip-ment, Terex construction equipment, EagerBeaver trailers, Samsung, Indeco demolitionattachments and Geith buckets and attachments. “While representing these manufacturers we

also work very closely with financing sources tohelp the customer to afford the machine they need.We have a large and diverse fleet of rental equip-ment,” added Funk. “This fleet includes thelargest-to-the-smallest tracked and wheeled exca-

vators, articulated haul trucks, wheel loaders of all sizes, doz-ers, loader backhoes, wheeled and tracked skid steers, and avery wide variety of attachments for specific applications. “We provide servicing of all types of construction equip-

ment from electrical repairs, engine and transmission repair,”he added. “We are able to modify equipment in many waysto make it more suitable for individual needs.”

Working With the LocalsFour decades after it began, F&W Equipment Corp. shift-

ed into high gear in 1979, when The Southern ConnecticutGas Company purchased a fleet of 580C loader backhoes. Now merged with Connecticut Natural Gas, they maintainthe natural gas infrastructure in Connecticut, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. “They have to have their fleet ready to go,” said Funk.

“Since then, they have updated their fleet many times over.”Regional companies that buy and rent from F&W

Equipment Corp. include Star Construction and DiversifiedSpeciality Inc., each used both wheeled and tracked excava-tors from F&W on the local Pearl Harbor CrossingImprovement Program.“For decades, we have been supplying A.J. Penna

Construction and Brennan Construction [with] a wide vari-ety of excavators, wheel loaders, skid steers and demolitionequipment to do regular and emergency repairs of AquarionWater Company’s infrastructure,” Funk continued. “Many of our customers have been involved with the revi-

talization project going on in Stamford. We supplied trackcrushers, excavators and demolition equipment to BestechCorporation during the demolition phase of the PitneyBowes complex,” he said. “Connecticut Tank Removal hasworked in many areas of the project, handling many envi-ronmental concerns. They have used many excavators withdemolition attachments, tracked skid steers and wheel load-ers to handle their jobs. “We were able to help support Guerrera Construction’s

wheeled excavators and some of their track excavators dur-ing the new construction of the Metro North/Fairfield Trainstation. During the road construction phase, they enjoyedrunning a Kubota mini-excavator that we were able to sup-ply to them,” concluded Funk.

TestimonialsVarious company testimonials may be found at the com-

pany’s Web site or online at YouTube. This one is typical:It came from local contractor Vic Marek, one of a large

pool of exclusive “Fun at Work” customers over many years.

ITL Auctioneering Holds Successful Sale in Taunton, Mass.

John Stanovitch, Stano Landscaping, Mansfield, Mass.,looks at the green machine, which drew a crowd allday.

Craig Wooster, owner of C.W. Jae Landscaping, isdelighted with what he discovered, a loader in topshape.

ITL co-owner Justin Lyerla (C) entertains contractorsas they registered for the auction.

Elmer Barger of Raynham, Mass,. examines a classicexcavator.

ITL Auctioneering and Liquidations held another success-ful sale on Sept. 15. Buyers sorted through an array oflarge and small trucks, cars, RVs and boats. Heavy iron on

the block included excavators, loaders and screeners.Smaller iron, such as tractors and air compressors, someantique and fully restored, also were up for grabs.

Co-owner Justin Lyerla, who runs ITL with his fatherJohn Lyerla Sr., brother John Jr. and mother, Maryanne, said,“We have more than 220 lots today on the 2.2 acres here. This was an old Chevy dealership.”

Buyers came from all over Massachusetts — Taunton,Dighton, North Dighton, Rehoboth, Somerset, Seekonk,Mansfield, Walpole, Brockton, Raynham, and even as far asSagamore Beach.

ITL specializes in auctioneering, sales and liquidation. The company has assisted small businesses and big corpora-tions with marketing strategies to maximize their profitswhen liquidating merchandise, and found gems to sell to the“little guy,” as well.

The family has a long history in sales, specifically equip-ment sales, with more than 50 years of combined experiencein marketing. ITL and the Lyerla family believe that all rela-tionships are important, whether selling one item or a wholewarehouse of inventory.

The family also recognizes the future of their business. “On November 3, we are having a straight, virtual

auction,” said Lyerla. “We are selling online only. There isquite a logistical difference, when you go online.”

ITL does business all over New England, into Maine andis now expanding into New York.

“We are building our clientele now,” he added. “We arenetworking with equipment people on different projects, andnew auctions, networking with many new people.”

Grant to Help UNH Study HowClimate Affects Roads, BridgesDURHAM, N.H. (AP) A $750,000

National Science Foundation grant will helpUniversity of New Hampshire researchersexamine how climate affects road andbridge construction. Road and bridge engineers look to cli-

mate data when designing and constructingprojects, but researchers say data represent-ing the changing nature of climate has large-ly eluded them, in part because of its com-plexity. “The climate change community and the

infrastructure engineers are not yet talking,”said Jennifer Jacobs, principal researcher.“They’re not at the same meetings, they’renot in the same departments at universities.” Jo Daniel, a researcher and associate pro-

fessor of civil engineering at UNH, said ifclimate is changing, using weather datafrom 20 years ago is not going to representwhat the road will experience in the next 20

years. The four-year grant will fund the creation

of the Infrastructure and Climate Network,or ICNet, to support the integration of cli-mate science and engineering research.Representatives from state departments oftransportation and practicing engineers willalso be involved. The goal is create workshops using an

“Anytown Northeast” case study on therelationship of climate change to buildingroads and bridges. “Linking knowledge to action is not auto-

matic, but it’s critical,” said Jack Kartez, aresearcher and professor of communityplanning and development at the Universityof Southern Maine’s Muskie School ofPublic Service. The researchers hope that their New

England-based collaborative could beexpanded elsewhere.

ask me for advice and, during those phoneconversations, they always interrupt and saythey hate to be wasting my time,” said JimFunk. “I tend to stop them right there andsay, ‘You know what? You are not asking meany stupid questions.’ “What we always enjoy are the jobs that

people tell us can’t be done,” he added. “Ihave structural steel people here, I’ve gotengine repair people here, I’ve got hydraulictechnicians here who all just love to take onthat challenge, whether that’s parts, whetherthat’s service or whether that’s sales. I wantthem to get the whole F&W life cycle here.”

Service – Our ‘Secret Weapon’Roger Funk credits his hard-working

employees for delivering his great reputationover the last 73 years. “The service team is constantly exceeding

our customers’ expectations with their abili-ty to diagnose and repair equipment with allsorts of issues,” he said. “We have a secretweapon in the field. His name is Adam andhe is a legend in the business of getting yourmachine back to work.“Another of the notable service heroes is

Charlie. He started operating equipment inthe 1950s with cable-powered machines. Hehas been at F&W since 1992 and has rebuiltmany older machines with his vast historyand technical wizardry,” said Funk.Roger’s other son, Steve, runs the sales

side of the business with a strong field teamled by David Goulet, who joined F&W in1989, bringing 15 years of prior heavyequipment sales experience to the team.Twenty-three years later, Goulet knows hemade the right decision. “We have had many challenges over the

23 years I have been with F&W and I have

been gratified to work withthe Funk family to meeteach and every challenge.”Goulet stated. “The mostimportant part of my expe-rience has been to workwith owners of highintegrity and absolute hon-esty. That has been a criti-cal part of serving the manynew customers we havemade together over theyears. It also has given usnew opportunities forfuture growth. Despite theeconomic conditions of thelast four years, the futurelooks bright.” Goulet has just received

a special award from F&WEquipment Corp for selling1,000 machines.

“We have seen lots of changes since 1939,and, since the GFC in 2006, we have mademany adjustments to our business plan,” saidRoger Funk. “One of the most recent is tointroduce a brand makeover that included anew logo, Web site and refined marketingstrategy that focuses our efforts on customersatisfaction and the new generation of con-tractors who have to have the right tools forthe current market conditions.”And as F&W adapted from its original

small welding company to heavy iron salesand service, as they modified tractors forefficiency, changed brands and headquartersand logos, they also have embraced adaptingto the new electronic universe.“We have launched our ‘Fun at Work’

channel on YouTube(www.youtube.com/user/FWequip) so ourfuture customers can see how the latestmachines better serve their needs,” Funkadded. “This also works with our Facebookpage (www.facebook.com/FWEquipment)and our Twitter feed (twitter.com/fwequip-ment.) The social media is designed to culti-vate interest in our products and cultivatefuture customers in online environments thatthey are already active in at times when theyare off their machines.”F&W Equipment Corp. is Connecticut’s

largest Kubota dealer in construction equip-ment and the largest compact dealer in west-ern Connecticut and most machines also areavailable for rental. This has become a pop-ular first step for most new customers.“When you’re sitting in the cab of that

perfect machine on your next job, you willunderstand why, at F&W Equipment, webelieve in ‘Fun at Work,’” Funk concluded.
