INTRODUCTION.
Two hundred and fifty years ago Henry and Rich-
ard Kimball, the first emigrants of the name, with
their wives and children, fled from the persecutions
of the Old World, and landed on New England soil.
It would be desirable to have a genealogy of their
descendants compiled ; but no one has as yet volun-
teered to undertake so laborious a work.
In the fifth generation was Joseph, who was born
in Exeter, N. H., and died in Canterbury. He was
the great-grandfather of the compiler. I have at-
tempted to prepare and publish a genealogy of his
ancestors, and to give a record of all his descendants
who bear the name of Kimball. Where daughters
have married, I have given the names of their hus-
bands and children, and in some cases their grand-
children.
Three sons and one daughter of Joseph settled in
the state of Maine, and three sons and two daugh-
ters remained in New Hampshire.

INTRODUCTION.
At first I found much difficulty in tracing the de-
scendants of those who settled in Maine, but by con-
tinued effort I have succeeded in obtaining a satis-
factory record of most of them. I have written many
letters of inquiry ; and all to whom I have applied
have expressed much joy to learn of their ancestors
and cousins in New Hampshire.
The compilation has occupied many of my leisure
hours for several years, and it has been to me an
agreeable pastime. I express the hope that my
efforts will be appreciated by the members of the
families whose names are here recorded, and by
all others who are interested.
I am indebted to Matthew Adams Stickney, Esq.,
of Salem, Mass., for valuable information concerning
the first four generations. To him, and to all the
friends and relatives who have assisted me, I return
my thanks.
Previous to 1752 the legal year began on the 25th
of March, and the historical year began on the ist of
January. In old records these two methods were
frequently combined. Thus: March 10, 1728-9,
means that the year was 1728 of the legal year, and
1729 of the historical year, the latter being the
method now in use.
The usual abbreviations for the states are used,
which usually appear but once after each family
name, where the place of residence is first given.

JOSEPH KIMBALL FAMILY.
FIRST GENERATION.
RICHARD KIMBALL.
I. Richard was probably the ancestor of most
of the numerous families of the name of Kimball in
New Engrland.
On the tenth of April, 1634,^^ O. S., at the age of
39, he embarked at Ipswich, in the county of Suf-
folk, Old England, in the ship Elisabeth, William
Andrews, master, for Massachusetts, and landed at
Ipswich in New England. He hrst settled in Water-
town, of which he was a proprietor, in 1636-7; was
admitted a freeman 6 May, 1635.
[On the map in the history of Watertown, by
Henr)^ Bond, M. D., the homestead of " R. Kemball"
of six acres where he first settled, is bounded N. by
Cambridge, E. by land of W. Hamlet, S. by the high-
way, and W. by land of Edward White.]

randa'' gives the time "last of April."

JOSEPH MOODY.
The family of William, father of Joseph Moody,
was intimately connected with the family of Joseph
Kimball. Moody seemed to be a popular middle
name for many of his descendants. It appears in the
preceding pages fifteen times. They first settled in
the town of Newbury, Mass. William married Sarah,
daughter of Joseph Kimball, of Exeter, afterwards
of Canterbury (see page 25). He with his familycame from Newbury to Canterbury 10 Feb., 1794.
Joseph, their oldest son, was named for his grand-
father Kimball. He married Hannah, daughter of
Jonathan Foster, of Canterbury, 22 Nov., 18 15, and
continued on the farm at Canterbury until 1835,
when he came to Concord and assisted his brother
Charles in carrying on the farm then and now the
property of Joseph B. Walker. For a time he lived
in the house now the homestead of Mrs. Samuel
Coffin. In 1842 he purchased a farm in North Con-
cord, where he resided twenty years. It was here
his mother, Sarah, and his only son, Nathaniel, died.
In 1863 he with his wife moved to Penacook, where
they spent the close of a long and honored life
with their children and grandchildren. In 1S28 he
