Quote of the week… ‘You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself, any direction you choose’ – Dr. Seuss

Our Active Culture…

Swimming Success… At the end of last term Ben and Holly Smith represented our school and Zone at the Canterbury Primary Schools’ Swimming Championships held at the Selwyn Aquatic Centre. Both swimmers achieved personal bests on the day and came home with a few top five finishes between them... well done!

Hororata foots it with the best… Recently ten of Hororata’s finest competed in the Primary Sports Canterbury Duathlon at Ruapuna Park, Christchurch. The event has become an annual fixture for our Harriers, who competed alongside 750 students from throughout Canterbury. I am pleased to report that our athletes competed strongly, earning praise for themselves, their families and our school. The following students represented our school and achieved the corresponding success: Joe Cookson (12th), Charlie Blackburn (17th), William Henriksen (71st), Simon Henriksen (84th), Holly Smith (10th), Zara Mclean (24th), Grace Flett (80th), Ben Smith (15th), Will Cookson (33rd), Tom Chaffey (50th). A special well done goes out to Joe, Charlie and Ben who all achieved top twenty finishes and Holly Smith who finished in the top ten… awesome effort team!

Our Learning Culture…

Autumn Festival… The Hororata Autumn Festival was held on Friday 15 April 2016. Observing a ‘Flight’ theme (Science focus for Semester One), the festival showcased student work from a variety of essential learning areas. Like the Annual Pet Day, the Autumn Festival was part of an Open Day, whereby parents and friends of the school were invited into the school to view children’s work and to work alongside children in the classrooms as part of our Flight based Technology sessions.

Haere mai... I would like to welcome Eljane Araguas (Kea) to our school. I am confident that your time at Hororata will be both enjoyable and rewarding.

Finally, our school has ongoing commitment to health and safety and the compulsory wearing of the school’s High Visibility Safety Apparel (safety vests), whilst a child is in transit between home and school.

Road safety is a shared responsibility between students, parent and the school. It is up to us all to keep our kids safe… let’s start by wearing our Safety Vests everyday

Thanks for supporting our school

Marty Gameson (Principal)

Piwakawaka (Yrs 0-2) Miss Raybould

Hi everyone.

I have noticed recently an increase in the number of children not bringing their reading notebook and/or their book bag to school. I encourage the children to remember this by themselves. However many children are not able to do this so could parents please help them to do this. They appear to need some adult guidance.

Next week all children will get a spelling book to bring home every night so they need to get into the routine of organising their belongings as they will have more to keep track. Thank you for your support with this matter.

We are practising our cross country running each morning at fitness time. All children are aiming for two laps of the field at the moment and some are even up to three or four. Everyone has a great positive attitude to this and we are having fun. Also we are enjoying our new balls given to each class for playing with in the playground. We are very grateful for all this fabulous sports equipment.

Regards Julia

Kea (Yrs 2-4) Miss Stewart

Hello all,

This term in Kea we are starting off maths with learning about geometry. Shapes, patterns, turns, flips and angles are all around us and until we stop to think about how they are used in everyday life things like baking, building, art, sports and even music we often don’t notice them at all. We are also learning to play chess and already we have some keen chess competitors in the class. Prepare to be given a run for your money at home!

We are also gearing up for poetry competitions later on in the term. This week we have been looking at the language feature of similes and alliteration while doing an acrostic style poem about the colours of the rainbow. We hope you enjoy them.

Megan

Tui (Yrs 4-6) Mrs Foster

Hi Everyone,

Hope you all had a wonderful holiday. They seem to go by super-fast and are now nothing but a distant memory. It was great

seeing all the children last Monday and catching up on all their news.

This term is looking like it is going to be extremely busy what with the ‘Speech and Poetry’ competition and Reports at the end of the term, along with lots of other things. Please ensure that your child is bringing their Homework book and Reading book to school every day so they

are ready for their lessons – thank you for their support.

Jenni
