Quote of the week… ‘Children are like wet cement, whatever falls on them makes an impression’– Haim Ginott

School Reports… Reports are the schools most formal way of letting you know how your child’s education is progressing. Your child’s school report should clearly tell you what your child has learned over a period of time. It should show progress and achievement and will give you an indication of your child’s effort in each area. Teacher comments should help you to understand this more thoroughly as well as telling you what the next steps are for your child or what the next learning objective is for a subject area.

End-of-Year School Reports will be sent home to all families over the next few weeks. The information contained in this report is a snap shot of a child’s progress and achievement and should serve as a valuable starter for discussion with your child bout their learning and behaviour. Talk to your child about their school report. Get them to have a read of any comments the teacher may have made and ask what they think about it. If the report is great let them know you are proud of them. If the report is not so great ask them why they think that may be. Ask if they think there is any way they can change the behaviour or improve the practice… Ask the child if there anyone they may like to send a copy of the report to show them how well they are doing? Grandparents love this!

Parents are reminded that they are welcome at any time during the year to meet with classroom teachers, to discuss a child’s a progress and achievement and that regular contact with your classroom teacher will insure that there are no surprises in the school report. A wise man once told me ‘if parents have a strong relationship with their children and his/her teacher, they should be able to write the school report themselves’. If you wish to discuss your child's progress please contact the school to arrange an appointment with the class teacher before the end of the year.

Back to the Future… In Social Studies this semester we have been learning about Early Canterbury (Back to the Future). In this unit of work children have been learning about the arrival of Maori and the Europeans in Canterbury; life for children in the early days and the history of the Hororata settlement.

To conclude this unit, we will be visiting the Ferrymead Heritage Park and Christchurch Gondola on Friday 11 December 2015. The day’s activities will include interactive learning sessions in the Heritage Park and some amazing experiences in the Gondola Time Tunnel. Please note we are scheduling a late return to school on this day. Refer to the attached letter and permission form for more information.

Finally, the 2015 Christmas Celebration Assembly will be held at Hororata Community Hall on the evening of Thursday 17 December 2015. Children and families are asked to be seated by 6.45pm for a prompt 7.00pm start. The Assembly is an opportunity to look back on the year that was and celebrate the achievements of our students and teachers. We ask that children wear their school uniforms for the evening.

On the last day of term we will be holding a School Picnic here at school (starting at 12.00noon) families are invited to come along and take part in the picnic which will include a free sausage sizzle, snacks and drinks for the kids, some games and off-course a swim.

Please note school will open one hour later on Friday morning (9.45am) and close at the conclusion of the School Picnic about 2.45pm.

    Thanks for supporting our school

    Hi everyone

The swimming season is upon us and we all had a super time yesterday in the pool. After we had all got dressed we still had some clothes left over and everyone was quite adamant that they did not belong to them! After more checking and questioning we finally found the owners but it did take a lot of time so please name as much clothing as you can because some people do not recognise their clothes.

We are looking forward to our trip to Ferrymead next Friday and our Junior Day In on the following Monday. The last few weeks are running away on us and before we realise it the end of term will be upon us. The timetable is rather fluid at the moment as our class has grown. Even if we don't read in class every day I will endeavour to ensure they have a book from their group box to share at home.

    Regards Julia

    Kea (Yrs 2-4) Miss Stewart

    Hello all,

Three more weeks and at least 3 big events coming up that I can recall off the top of my head.

One such up-coming event is the bi-annual Junior Big Day In for NE to Year 3, funded by our lovely PTA.

This year we are having a bouncy castle, facing painting, decorating biscuits and topping it off with a giant water fight. Speaking of water the pool is officially open so remember to send togs along to school for an afternoon swim.

    Regards Megan

    Tui (Yrs 4-6) Mrs Foster

This week's History Lesson on Hororata School

THE SCHOOL - A CIVIC CENTRE

As the first public building erected in Hororata, it is not difficult to imagine its importance to the people of that time. All manner of gatherings were held in it and it soon became the social centre of Hororata. In 1871 when the Rakaia Road Board met at the school, Mr C S Harper resigned as Chairman and Mr John Hall took his place. Few Sundays went by without a Church Service being held beneath the roof. Congregations of 100 or more were the order of the day. The Lyttelton Times records that the Hororata School was being used by the Church of England twice a month and the Presbyterians and Methodists once a month for Church services.

With more interest being shown in reading and learning, a library was soon formed at the school and in 1874 a building was erected by Mr Prestidge in the school grounds at a cost of 74 Pound. The library stood here for many years and was removed to the Hororata Hall grounds soon after the hall was completed/

With the building of the Hororata Church of England in 1875, the school lost some of its importance, but still maintained its position as a centre for the district, as it indeed does today. At one time Mr John hall was very pleased to report to the ‘Lyttelton Times’ that the skylarks he had liberated, also the chaf-finches and sparrows imported from England were doing well and increasing rapidly. This increase become less pleasing with the years, as the birds be-gan to steal the grain crops and fruit. Very soon the small boys and girls were making useful pocket money by selling the eggs and pickled heads they had gathered to the Council.

Our first headmaster, Mr Digby bore the brunt of establishing the school to the satisfaction of the community and this would be no easy task. Teachers at that time were under the control of the Education Board and the School Com-mittee and to carry out the wishes of both parties was often a formidable un-dertaking. Mr Digby remained until 1879 and resigned owing to a difference of opinion with his Committee. Pupil promotion was the responsibility of the Education Board inspectors and on this occasion the inspector’s visit was six months overdue, which meant that all the pupils had the benefit of six extra months in their present class! The concern of the parents can well be imag-ined. What if an inspector never came? More to come!
