Piwakawaka (Yrs 0-2) Miss Raybould

Hi everyone This week we have been looking at time - days of the week, months and units of time. The children have all made their own clock which they will bring home soon. We are learning to make o'clock and half hour time on our clock; and discussing the passage of time ie what time will it be in 3 hours? This is our last week to visit the library to issue books and we would like all books returned next week please. We are all having a fabulous time swimming in the afternoons. Very refreshing on these hot summer days. It is great to see children’s confidence growing and the way they encourage each other in the pool. Regards Julia

Kakapo (Yrs 1-2) Ms Cullen Kai Ora Koutou katoa, Well I can't believe I am writing my last newsletter for the term that time has flown by very fast and Christmas just around the corner scary. We have a busy and fun couple of weeks on the way and lots of Christmas activities to do to brighten up our lovely classroom. If the weather is good we usually have a swim in the afternoon so if we could all bring our togs everyday would be great so we can have some swimming practice before lessons begin next year. Beach Education this Friday very excited although I do hope the weather plays the part. We are nearly ready for our CD hovercraft experiment but I really do need some bottle tops to make it possible. Also I need some more toilet roll inner for our Christmas activities. Hope to see you all soon Ka kite ano Amanda

Kea (Yrs 2-4) Miss Stewart

Hello all, Almost to the end of term! I can’t believe it. In class this term we have been doing interchange so all the teachers have had a chance to teach in each class. Each teacher had a topic to teach around our theme of ‘The Good Life’ teaching the children about how keeping yourself healthy and making good choices is important to your inside and your outside too. Miss Raybould taught about healthy eating choices in our lunches, Ms Cullen and Mrs Cookson taught about different ways to keep active, I taught about the impact of sleep on our brain and body and Mr G taught about water. We are rounding out our topic with our beach education trip learning how to keep ourselves safe in and around the water. Megan

Tui (Yrs 4-6) Mrs Foster

Hi Everyone In Tui at the moment we are busy writing narratives. Lucy Cookson is coming in everyday to take a group for writing in the library. We are both using the same ideas however Mrs Cookson has a smaller group and they are working at a slower pace. This is a wonderful opportunity for the children. As the end of the year approaches we are gearing up for our Christmas art. Hopefully everyone got my note informing you of our shared lunch in the last week and secret Santa. Your child will come home soon with who they are buying for. Every day we are swimming so please keep sending those togs. Thanks very much. Cheers Jenni

The following students held old and/or hold new records as part of this new set of records:

Our Learning Culture…

Canterbury Agricultural Club Championship Day … On Thursday 17 November 2016, Hororata Primary School sent six of our finest young farmers to compete at the 2016 Synlait Boys and Girls Agricultural Club Championship Day, held at Canterbury Agricultural Park. I am proud to report that all of our students achieved notable success on the day, bagging a total ten ribbons. The following students achieved notable success: Senior Lamb Section: Esther Bruce - Leading and Handling (2nd); Holly Smith - Project Book (3rd). Junior Lamb Section: Dustin Rowlands - Champion Lamb, Care and Attention (1st), Leading and Handling (2nd); Mackenzie Rowlands - Reserve Champion Lamb, Care and Attention (2nd), Leading and Handling (3rd); Jessie Smith – Project Book (2nd). Kapa Haka Tour… Our school has been participating in the weekly kapa haka tuition, alongside students from Kirwee, Greendale, Sheffield, and Springfield Schools for the last few years. Currently we send 6-8 students a week to tuition sessions held at Kirwee Model School with the hope that they will bring back what they have learned to our school and share their learning with other students. To showcase the group our students performed as part of the wider Malvern Kapa Haka Group at schools across Malvern in late November. The tour including performances in Kirwee, Hororata and Sheffield was a great way to show case Maori Culture in our area.

A special thanks to Paula Buechele, who has co-ordinated weekly transport for our students to attend classes in Kirwee each week… thanks Paula!

HORORATA

Excerpts from In the Shadow of the Alps. A History of Malvern 1853-1989 by Ray Dobbie and Brian Perrin. Hororata was established as a district centre about the time the four main sheep runs were being taken up from 1852. Edwin Derrett was among the first settlers that year and he soon started an accommodation house in what was to prove a good location to skim a living from passers-by. Small settlers were attracted to the district by an abundance of water, and the comparatively easy access to Christchurch.

Hororata was given its name in 1869 one year before our school started. We were part of the Selwyn Forks which was applied in the 1860s to the locality of the Haldon station homestead. Hororata was the name given by the Maori to a landmark in the Rockwood Hills behind the township. Its meaning is open to interpretation. One version is horo—a as or landslide, rata—a tree or trees. Another version is a fallen rata tree or trees. A flippant version was Oliverata from the long connection this family has had with the district.

HORORATA GOLF CLUB COACHING The Hororata Golf Club hold golf coaching on a Friday afternoon. Alternate weeks is via voluntary Club members. At a cost of $2) and then a Professional golfer comes in the following week at a cost of $8. Players are taught basics before proceeding out to play some holes in pairs. Term Four - Athletic Sports

On Monday we went to athletics. It was fun, but my favourite thing was sprinting. When I started I twisted my ankle and I was annoyed because I came second. I would’ve come first if I didn’t twist it but I am still proud of myself. By Toby

Yesterday when we were at athletics my favourite thing was rob the nest because Miles was on top of the balls so no one could get them. At one point we had all the balls and we were goose guarding our nest. By Josh

Yesterday we were doing athletics at Darfield High School. We were at the last thing, shotput. I was waiting so long in the line. Then it was my turn, finally. I threw the heavy ball. After the ball had landed I thought it was a dumb throw. By Brodie

Yesterday at athletics my favourite sport/game was shotput. First you have to put your hand on your cheek and then push. Now, back to the story. When I throw the steel ball it landed 8.25m I think, or maybe longer than that but I did try my best. After everyone had a go and heard the score I came fourth. I was cheerful but I’m not going to Malvern which is sad. By Taane

It was a boiling hot day. I was so excited to do sprints!!! All the children were lined up in their tracks. Mr G shouted, “Take your mark… Get set…” CLAP. I was shooting off like a rocket. Everyone was cheering. I was going so fast I couldn’t feel my legs. My placing was 1st. “Wahoo I’m going to Malvern aha aha.” By Ellie

Yesterday I went to the school sports and it was very fun. I did high jump and I loved it. It was so fun. All I had to do was do a scissor jump. It looks like scissors cutting a piece of paper. Also long jump was very fun as well. The lady that was raking the sand in the long jump pit said I did a good job. Then the last one we did was the running. When we did the running races we did 50m and 80m. It was very, very, very, very, fun, fun, fun, fun, fun! By Gracie

Last Monday we went to Darfield for sports and it was so funny on the sprint track. I came 4th and 5th. I was really good at long jump too. All of the day was super fun I always want to go to it. Last I really, really, really liked the high jump even though I hit the bar every time. I still have fun trying my hardest to do it. By Jackson

On Monday we had athletics. My favourite event was long jump because all he have to do is run and jump. When it was my turn I had a good run up. We got two turns each and I think my best was the second round. It was so fun I would like five turns mostly. The pit was rectangular and full of sand. The sand was grey with little stones that you can’t even feel. There were five people in the final and I didn’t come in the finals. I want to do long jump again and again. By Emily B

At athletics I did best in the running. I got to the finals. How do I get so very fast? It is really simple. Once I am up to a good pace in my head I just say faster, faster and push my legs faster. By Dustin

Yesterday our school went to athletics. We rotated to different sports but shotput, high jump and running are my favourite. I came about first place but I didn’t come first I came fourth. It was cool. By Xavier

On athletics day my favourite part was…high jump, because I came third in it. Zoe came 2nd and Ellie from Kirwee School came 1st place. Ellie was very tall. She was almost a metre and a half. She has blonde hair and a red school uniform. I went home on the bus. It was sizzling like cooked sausages. At lunch Ellie, from Hororata School, bought me a sausage. Jessie had a lolly from Ellie. By Niamh

Once upon a time we went to the Darfield High School to do sports and my favourite one was the long jump. I am really good at long jump. I am the best in the whole wide world. And then there were two boys talking and they whispered, “Hey do you like that girl?” Then they ran and did their jumps and I practiced. By Eljane

First I liked the running because I came third. That’s why I liked it. Then we did high jump and I came fourth and dodge ball was the best. That is why I saved it till last. It was fun because we got to hit each other and other people with the blue ball. By TK

I went to the athletics. I came first for everything but not the races. I came second in running. I did the high jump and nearly broke my ankle. I still won but at the end they made me sit on the chair and my ankle felt like there was thunder inside. By Poppy

Kea children would like to thank Miss Stewart for sharing their amazing year with them. They advised us that they have had a busy and extremely exciting year.
