Future Depends on Holding Fast to Imagination and Will to Risk

Our Goal: in the long run Our fundamental task is to provide

experiences that bring kids to the meeting point between their natural aptitude and personal passion - a place where they are doing this thing they love and in doing it they feel like they're most authentic selves.

In other words, we aim to bring every child in the Avon Maitland district as many times as possible to the place where the things they love to do and the things they are good at come together.

Author Ken Robinson calls this their Element and, like him, we are committed to the belief that it’s crucial that a child finds this, not simply because it will make them more fulfilled but because, as the world evolves, the

very future of our communities and institutions depend on it.

We are also deeply committed to convincing children to hold fast to what they inherently bring with them at the start of their school careers - “sparkling imaginations, fertile minds, and a willingness to take risks with what they think.”

The pictures in this publication are snippets of what our work looks like on the ground.

Each image represents one milli-second in the life of one child: flashes of fleeting experiences, moments and - we can only hope - memories to carry with them.

And by ‘memories’ we don’t necessarily mean precise recollections but simply shadows of an experience that filled them with joy, not because it

was fun, but because it stirred them and deeply reassured them, even for a moment, that what they are and what they are becoming will make a difference in the world.

Foundation and Province Honour Healthcare Alliance

The Huron Perth Healthcare Alliance, through nomination by the Foundation for Education, was recently recognized by the Province of Ontario for helping students gain hands-on learning opportunities for their future careers.

The Healthcare Alliance received an Employer Champion Award for providing high school students with valuable work experience for 10 years through co-op, job shadowing and mentoring. Students get a chance to work in 20 departments over a !ve-week period — from helping in nursing units to participating in fund-raising events.

“It is a privilege to inspire students in our community to pursue a career within the health care sector. In fact, one of our nominators for this award is also a former co-op student who discovered her passion for nursing with us and is now in postsecondary studies to become a nurse.” Andrew Williams, CEO, Huron Perth Healthcare Alliance

Big Evening Brings Big Reward The Foundation annually hosts a big evening called the Gala Auction and stacks it to the hilt with amazing items – anywhere from getaways to artwork, gift packages to sports tickets – all to make certain that 140+ crucial arts, life skills and human diversity workshops continue to enhance over 5000 students in the Avon Maitland district throughout year.

The Gala Auction, now in its nineteenth year, takes place in early November at the Church Restaurant in Stratford. The next Gala will be on Nov. 2, 2013.

Please visit the Foundation website for details and note the list of individuals and companies (see pages 4 - 6) that ensure the Gala’s ongoing success.

I believe that by providing experiences that spark passion and creativity we are preparing kids for their darkest hours and idle minutes - the point in their development when there comes a tendency to shrink, to deny, to put away ‘childish things’. Wes MacVicar

Avon Maitland Honours Foundation Champion

Last year the Avon Maitland District School Board awarded a Key Contribution Award to the Foundation’s Lynda McGregor for her work in developing community and school relations. The following is an excerpt from the Awards Night programme:

As Executive Director of the Foundation for Education from 1999 to 2009, Lynda tirelessly devoted herself to bolstering community involvement in support of Avon Maitland schools and built bridges between business and education

whereby students could !nd mentorship, work experience and other inspiring opportunities. Lynda implemented a Ministry initiative that commissioned regional organizations to expand experiential learning in their areas. She recruited hundreds of new employers from Huron Perth, partnered with dozens of community organizations to deliver programs, seminars and publications and sat on the provincial board that administered the initiative provincially – the Ontario Business Education Partnership. She has been instrumental in developing thriving community programs with ties to the schools such as the Big Brothers & Sisters in-school mentoring program and The Baby Literacy Project with the Huron & Perth Health Units and has introduced 40 community artists to over 40,000 Avon Maitland students. Known also as a consummate fund-raiser and consultant for School Councils, Lynda has helped bolster school donations in her tenure by 170%, has managed to quadruple Gift-in-Kind donations and has established several legacy funds for schools. Lynda’s donation appeals and fund-raisers have garnered community buy-in to the tune of nearly three quarters of a million dollars.

Foundation Video Catches Provincial Eye In 2010, the Foundation announced the official launch of a series of videos starring students across the Avon Maitland District School Board involved in Specialist High Skills Major programs.

Spearheaded and funded by AMDSB and the Foundation, the production boasted interviews with dozens of Perth and Huron students and teachers, with appearances by the then Federal Cabinet Minister, John Wilkinson and cultural icon, William Shatner.

The video continues to be a standard tool for schools and agencies across the province and can be viewed on our YouTube & Vimeo Channel.

Adding LIFE to Workshops Introducing a new name for long-established experiences for kids. Known as ‘ARTitudes’ since 2000, the Foundation recently announced it’s new handle ‘ART | LIFE Workshops’ along with a 60 second trailer to represent

what the initiative looks like on the ground.

The FoundFILMS video entitled ‘Kids & Creators’ can be viewed on the Foundation’s YouTube and Vimeo channels (please see bottom of back page)

As the name suggests, aspects of life skills have been added to the focus of some of the 140+ workshops. This shift is in effort to develop the everyday skills of students and bring experiences to them that reveal abilities and interests they had yet to fully explore or never knew they had.

I just wanted to thank you again for all of your support, and generous offer to continue to working with me on this project. Together we are going to accomplish great things . . .

Shipping Enrichment Worldwide

The Foundation has teamed up with The Rotary Club of Grand Bend and their Global Literacy Project whereby school materials which no longer meet the Ontario Curriculum standards are shipped to other parts of the world where children have almost no learning aids. The Rotary Club of Grand Bend have been involved in the loading of 18 containers to date. While school supplies and books remain the focus, shelving, musical instruments, soccer supplies and medical devices are welcome for future shipments. Recently volunteers partially loaded a container of school materials

at the now closed Zurich PS. The donations by the Avon Maitland School Board were from surplus items that could not be reused in other schools. The 40 foot sea container was then transferred to Ailsa Craig (Thames Valley District School Board) where volunteers completed the !lling of the container before it was sealed for shipment to the Rotary Club of Middleburg South Africa who will catalogue and distribute the supplies to needy rural schools in their area. Shipping costs, averaging $5000 per container, are paid for by The Rotary Club of Grand Bend and the generosity of other donors.Tax receipts are available for donations to the project through the Foundation.

To donate to the project online please visit www.bit.ly/globalLIT

For more information or for further questions regarding donations please contact Grand Bend Rotarians Peter Twynstra at (519)-293-3998 or Brian Hall at 519-238-8892
