Brothers and Ladies:

Spring has finally sprung in the Rockies and baseball has started! As I look out over the next two months, things slow down a bit in preparation for summer. There is plenty to do and lots of opportunities for getting involved!

By Laws. At the last council meeting, the By Laws were approved by a 2/3rd vote. They will be submitted to Supreme for final approval, subsequent distribution, posting, and printing.

Lenten Fish Fries. Both of our fish fries were total successes! The expansion of hours for our March fry, focusing on feeding those who were visiting our food pantry, went exceptionally well. It was heartwarm-ing to see so many folks have a great meal. Many food pantry clients asked if they could go home to bring back their families, especially the kids, for the best fish in town! Of course we said YES! We prepared over 220 breaded Alaskan cod, another 100+ servings of baked cod loin, and all the go-withs. We also had a number of Knights pitch in at the 3:15 shift, giving folks some time to talk and visit, something that does not happen very often, and was good to see! “Many hands make for light work.”

Recruiting. Recruiting efforts have been positive, with several prospective new members thinking hard about joining and a number of Knights transferring in to our council. Continue to keep asking. Thanks for your efforts.

Easter Parking. There was a little adventure at the beginning with the 6:15 Mass getting out late, caus-ing a ripple effect, but overall things went great. Thanks to Todd Thompson, Mark Elio, Charles Cote, Jim Davis, Taylor Lilly [our coordinator] and soon to be brother Rod Schuman!

Marian Hour of Prayer – 16 April – 7 PM in the Sanctuary. I invite all to attend as Deacon Jim Bachta will lead us for the second year in this hour of prayer. We will have the Our Lady Guadeloupe Icon 15-20 April. The history of the Icon and the hour of prayer are in the newsletter.

4th Degree Exemplification. Calling all 3rd degree Knights as well as 1st and 2nd degrees! We can get you squared away to become a 4th degree Knight at an exemplification to be held 19 May in Security. Start planning now and look for info!

Officer Elections. I ask each and every brother to seriously consider seeking an officer position for the next fraternal year, which begins 1 July. That sounds like a long way off, but, in reality, we only have three more council meetings until then. Elections are on 24 May. It’s time for some new people, and new ideas and directions. Please pray about taking an active leadership role in our council. We need you now more than ever!

James E “Jim” and Maxine McDermott February, 2013, Family of the Month

Brother Jim McDermott joined the order in 1954, but after several years became inactive. In November, 2010 he reactivated his membership, joining Council 9993. Shortly thereaf-ter he advanced to 2nd and 3rd degree. Council 9993 welcome Jim and Max-ine to active membership and recognizes them as February, 2013, Family of the Month.

Maxine and Jim are “model” members of the Auxiliary and the Council. They participate in nearly all meetings and activities. Typical of their par-ticipation is that when planning got underway for the April 6, 2013, Council Casino Night, both joined in all of the planning meetings and volunteered for key responsibilities in ticket sales, food, and set-up!

Other Knight and Auxiliary involvement includes helping with pancake breakfasts, the annual drive to benefit the mentally handicapped, parish Ok-toberfest, parish picnic, craft and bake sales, and sales of Keep Christ in Christmas cards. Maxine serves as treasurer of the Auxiliary.

They joined St. Patrick Parish in 1986 and have been active from the ear-ly days of the Parish through this time. Their involvement includes service on the Building and Properties Committee, Stewardship Committee, Budget Committee, and both served as Extra-ordinary Ministers of Holy Communion. They now serve on the Tithing Committee, the Welcoming Ministry for Newcomers to the parish, and participate in the Cuisine for the Spirit dinner gatherings.

Jim has 12 years of service with Pikes Peak Hospice and Palliative Care as a patient home care volunteer.

In August, 2013, Jim and Maxine will celebrate 55 years of Marriage. They have five children, (Gregory James – 53, Catherine Marie – 52, Mark Edward – 51, Paul William -- 49, and Alan Patrick – 44) five grand-children, and one great grandchild. Congratulations Maxine, Jim, and family.

Jim served 8 years with the Nebraska Army National Guard. We honor you as February Family of the Month for your many and continuing years of friendship and service!!

The Bottom Line

"$upporting Our Good Works "

What follows is a brief summary of the financial activities associated with our Council [9993] and 4th De-gree Assembly [3049].

Council 9993’s Casino Night Fundraiser continues strongly. This fundraiser goes to support Care and Share and Habitat for Humanity here in Colorado Springs. This fundraiser brings in money from both ticket sales (buy one today!) as well as company sponsorship, the latter of which has already generously yielded $3,000 for the charities. Please take a few moments to read through the newsletter for more information on this exciting event.

During the month of March, the Knights wrapped up our last Fish Fry. The event is not a fundraiser, but instead a service of fraternity and community involvement. Your attendance and support for the event, this year, has made it the most successful series of Fish Fry’s to date. In addition to the good food, good company, and fun of the dinners, the series yielded ~$1,300 to support the charities and good works of the Knights. Please take a look for additional details in this newsletter. The Knights continue to support supplies

for our Parish with $100 donation and Life Network’s Mobile Pregnancy Center with a donation of $100, both ongoing monthly contributions from Council 9993. Lastly, Council 9993 has donated $150 to Carol Col-ter for the ongoing good work she and the Respect Life Crafters are doing with prayer blankets and pro-life activities.

Assembly 3049 has graciously allocated $200 to the K of C State Charities fund for Military Chaplains, which will go to vocational training of priests specifically looking to join the military’s chaplaincy corps.

If anyone would like more information on the financial status of the Council or the Assembly, please stop by any regular business meeting or feel free to contact me directly.

Faithfully yours,

Habemus Papam! By Mark Elio

In last month's Knights Knews I shared how an important drama in the life of the Church was playing out before us, and how we had the privileged opportunity to view it, whether by television, radio or Internet.

Well, the good news has been realized - the "white smoke" has issued from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican, signaling that the Cardinals gathered there in the Conclave had chosen a successor to Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, Cardinal Mario Bergoglio, who chose the name Francis after St. Francis of Assisi, founder of the Franciscan order and patron saint of the poor. Interestingly, Pope Francis is a Jesuit who served as Provincial for Argentina for the Society of Jesus (founded by St. Ignatius of Loyola) from 1973 to 1979. Our Diocese will cer-tainly benefit from this unique melding of Jesuit and Franciscan spirituality in our new Pope, as we are blessed with the Capuchin Franciscans serving at the Catholic Center in the Citadel Mall and Jesuits at the Sacred Heart Retreat House in Sedalia. We have also had the joy of many Jesuit priests previously serving in our Diocese, in-cluding the beloved Fr. Joe Damhorst now teaching in St. Louis.

In addition, there are a number of firsts in this 265th successor to St. Peter: Pope Francis is the first Pontiff to take the name "Francis,” the first Jesuit to be chosen to this office, the first Pope to be born in the Americas, and the first non-European Pontiff in over 1200 years. Furthermore, Pope Francis has already demonstrated marked changes from his predecessor, Benedict XVI. For example, he has decided that rather than residing in the elaborate suites of the Apostolic Palace, he will live in a simple apartment at Domus Sanctae Martae House near St. Peter's Basilica. The Holy Father will use the Papal apartments only for official audiences and the weekly Sunday Ange-lus addresses. As Archbishop of Argentina, then Cardinal Bergoglio lived in a simple apartment as opposed to residing in the Archbishop's large house of which he could have availed himself. With all this in mind, Pope Fran-cis has begun to express some early themes of his new Papacy, such as mercy for all and compassion for the poor among us.

Finally, during his recent Palm Sunday Mass celebration, Pope Francis announced that he is indeed looking for-ward to attending the next World Youth Day in July in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and he has exhorted all the youth who will be participating to prayerfully prepare for this event. In closing, we rejoice in the Church's new pastoral leader, Pope Francis, and ask the Lord's continued guidance, strength, wisdom and blessings upon him as he shep-herds our Church in the months ahead. Habemus Papam - a new springtime has dawned on the Church.

Pro-Life, Marriage, and Religious Freedom

Cleta and Herman Jasper

Our Parish, Council, and Community had a very successful 40 Days for Life time of prayer and fasting, peaceful vigil, and community outreach during lent. Thanks to all that joined in!!

Now that the Lenten 40 Days for Life are complete we continue with our on-going vigil outside Planned Parenthood. St. Patrick Knights and parishioners are asked to participate on the 3rd Friday of each month for an hour.

The Catholic Bishops of the United States have issued A National Call to Prayer and Action regarding Life, Marriage, and Religious Freedom. Through November, 2013, the final hour of Eucharistic Adoration at St. Patrick (from to 6:00 to 7:00 pm) on the last Thursday of each month will be devoted to Life, Marriage or Religious Freedom. Be sure to mark your calendars and plan to join in prayer for these needs.

We at St. Patrick are joining with the Bishops in petitioning our US senators and Congressmen to consider and pass only legislation supportive of Life and Religious Freedom. Cards for you to sign will be available after all Masses the weekend of April 6 and 7. Help is needed in staffing signing tables after all Masses. Contact Cleta at 590-9303 if you can help. And be sure to sign petition cards if you have not already done so.

Ladies Auxiliary Korner By Melissa Anderson

Happy Easter to all! I pray that your Lenten journey was fruitful in deepening your faith and that Easter was a wonderful celebration of the greatness of our God!

March was a busy month with Casino Night ticket sales, a fish fry, and the parish St. Patrick feast day cele-bration. Many of our Ladies have volunteered to help during Casino Night, including those who will make and sell the sandwich, chips, cookies and soft drink Meal Deal at the event. If you haven’t bought your tickets yet, time is running out!

We will have officer nominations at our Auxiliary meeting on the 24th, and elections at our May meeting. If you are interested in becoming an officer or would like to nominate someone, please attend this month’s meeting or contact Debbie Williams ([email protected]) or Madeline Barnitz ([email protected]) before the 24th.

I want to acknowledge and welcome again those Ladies who have joined our Auxiliary over the past few months – Emma Mailinger, Jeanne Patalano, Katrina Rex, Mary Ann Lamecker, Angie Dykes, Carolyn Luckenbaugh, Irene Knudsen, Glenda Cruse and Donna Nandin. Please make them feel welcome!

STATE Free Throw Championship State Finals of Poster Competition Saturday, March 9, 2013 Corpus Christi School by Herman Jasper

About 100 Champion Free Throw Shooters from Colorado competed in the State K of C Free Throw Championship on Saturday, March 9. These young men and women qualified by winning their respective district competition and advanced to State Level Competitions. Representing Council 9993 were San-dra Piedad (12 yr. girl), Taylor Fortune (13 yr. girl), Mary Piedad (14 yr. girl), Jacob Best (13 yr. boy) and Bryce Blackshear (14 yr. boy). Congratulations to all of these basketball sharpshooters, especially Mary Piedad, who placed 3rd among 14 year old girls.

I had the opportunity to serve as one of five judges in the competition among the finalists of the Alcohol Awareness and Abuse and Drug Awareness Poster contest. The competition was keen!

The creative and imaginative way in that the contestants presented their ideas was an inspiration .I served as a judge with mixed feelings—I was eligible to be a judge since Council 9993 did not have any entrants in the competition I hope that next year we will have one or more finalists.

Knights’ Knews April 2013

What if your last paycheck was your last paycheck?

Many of us have had the foresight to look out for our loved ones welfare in the event of our death. No organization has made us better aware of this then the Knights of Columbus. Thanks to the incredible vision of our founder, Fa-ther Michael J. McGivney, the Knights of Columbus has been in the position for more the 130 years to provide these much needed benefits, to our Brother Knights and their families.

How many of us have thought about what we would do to keep these benefits in force if we were to become disa-bled, and lose our ability to work. If we cannot work, we cannot continue to provide for our family in the same way. In this ever changing environment, we have constant changing concerns for our careers, our income, our abil-ity to save for retirement, and our ability to provide for our families.

Over a year ago, the Knights of Columbus introduced Disability Insurance. This type of insurance had been around for quite some time, but has been easily overlooked. Some of us have short term or long term disability though our employers. However, these plans need to be looked at very carefully. In many cases, the benefit that is provided by group policies does not provide the benefit we may expect. With a Disability Insurance plan through the Knights of Columbus, we can design a benefit around our needs. Whether that need be as small as $500 per month to cover the premiums of our life insurance, auto insurance, or home insurance. Or to design a plan that covers up to 60% of our lost income due to disability.

Take a few moments to look over these questions:

Your Monthly Expenses Mortgage (including property tax) or rent. _____________ Homeowners/renters insurance _____________ Car Payments/car insurance _____________ Utilities _____________ Food/clothing _____________ Child care, Child support, Alimony _____________ Medical expenses (incl. cost due to disability) _____________ Insurance (Life & Health) _____________ Monthly Savings/Investments _____________ Maintenance cost for the home _____________ Other (education, etc.) _____________ Total Monthly Expenses $________________

Can you afford to be without and income? How will you replace lost income if a disability strikes?

Marian Hour of Prayer April 16th

April 16th marks the annual pilgrimage of the icon of Our La-dy of Guadalupe stopping at St. Patrick for an evening of prayer. The Marian Hour of Prayer program has been sponsored by the Knights of Columbus since 1979. There are several icons depict-ing the Blessed Virgin under her various title throughout the world. Here, the icon is of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of the Americas and of the United States, as well as Patroness of the Knights of Columbus. Last year, the image was one that had touched the original miraculous tilma of Juan Diego bearing the image of Our Lady.

Many of our popes have had a special devotion to the Blessed Virgin. Blessed John Paul II wrote Ecclesia in America, in which he said that “the Virgin of Guadalupe is venerated as Queen of all America.”

This special icon will only be at St. Patrick for a very short time, so don’t miss it. Our Marian Hour of Prayer will be at 7 PM on April 16th, but the icon may be on display throughout the day, as it was last year in the Fitzpatrick Room. Be sure to join us to honor the Blessed Virgin and to pray for peace, respect for life, religious freedom, and any other spe-cial intentions you may have. Come visit your Mother!

Faithful Friar Mike’s Reflection

Happy Easter! When the Knights newsletter reaches you, we will be in the liturgical season of Easter week. We have what we call an octave which means eight. That is eight straight days of solemnity Masses, the highest order of Masses we can experience. Easter week to put it mildly is an awesome time of celebration. Giving thanks to God the Father for giving us the gift of his Son for our salvation.

I love the readings during the Easter season. We read about the post-resurrection visits that Jesus makes. Whether he comes to an individual, a small group or even a large group, the first word that comes out of his mouth is PEACE BE WITH YOU. This is the Resurrection gift Jesus has given us. A peace the world doesn’t understand or can’t understand unless one is living in the Spirit of God.

What does Peace mean in this context? It means one’s union with the Lord. When we are so united with Christ, we are longer fearful or afraid of things to come. Oh yes they will come but we know we are under the umbrella of God and that’s what gives us such confidence in God.

Two phrases come to my mind at this time. Since Pope Francis took office, he has been frequently saying, “When one accepts Christ’s love, one is saved. When one rejects Christ’s love he/she is condemned”. God does not do the condemning it is the individual who has condemned himself. The other phrase is, and you’ve heard it before, “The more dependent one becomes upon God, the more dependable God is”.

May we all have a blessed Easter season and be forever grateful for what God has done for all of humanity.

PEACE BE WITH YOU. Padre Mike
