None of this can be underestimated and has been very much appreciated. Classes 2021 The number of classes we can create for 2021 is determined by the total enrolment of children. For 2021 we have created 21 mainstream classes from R-7 with the additional class being the District based Speech and Language class. Our class structures and locations have been decided for next year as follows: 2 x Reception; 1 x Reception/Year 1; 2 x Year 1; 1 x Year 1/2; 3 x Year 2; 2 x Year 3; 2 x Year 4; 1 x Year 4/5; 2 x Year 5; 3 x Year 6; 2 x Year 7 In this school community there is a preference for straight year levels, and this has been taken into consideration when determining our structures for 2021 with 18 straight and 3 composite classes. During your child’s time at our school however, they will encounter both straight and composite or multi-level classes. As mentioned previously, research does confirm that there is no discernible difference in academic performance between composite or single year level classes, and that children in multi-age classes may benefit socially and emotionally. For me, what is important, regardless of the organisational structure of classes, is the relationship our educators have with children and the quality of the teaching and learning programs provided for every child, every day, in every class. This is what we focus our attention on as educators at Paringa Park. We have nearly finalised the class placements, which as you would understand, is extremely complex. Both teachers and site leaders take their responsibilities to all children very seriously. We use our knowledge and expertise of how children engage at school and in classes to make decisions for the benefit of all children. On Wednesday in the last week of school, children will have the opportunity to meet with their new teacher (if all our contract staffing has been confirmed) and class for 2021 and letters will be sent home to families. This has involved many hours of configuring classes, and in consideration of a range of factors including children’s friendships, learning and social needs, teacher professional knowledge and judgement and parent input. I would like to acknowledge the staff for their many hours already spent working on classes for 2021 to ensure the best decision possible for all children. Our aim is to ensure all children are in an optimal learning situation. We therefore ask for parent support and understanding when you receive your letter. Due to the amount of work that has gone into the final configuration of classes, we will not be in a position to move children. Dear Families,

Well this week was ‘back to normal’ for our staff after a few very unexpected days last week! What I have so admired about our children, staff and families throughout this year is their ability and willingness to be flexible, adaptable and supportive of each other. None of this can be underestimated and has been very much appreciated.

Classes 2021 The number of classes we can create for 2021 is determined by the total enrolment of children. For 2021 we have created 21 mainstream classes from R-7 with the additional class being the District based Speech and Language class. Our class structures and locations have been decided for next year as follows:

In this school community there is a preference for straight year levels, and this has been taken into consideration when determining our structures for 2021 with 18 straight and 3 composite classes. During your child’s time at our school however, they will encounter both straight and composite or multi-level classes. Staffing update At the end of each year we have the opportunity to acknowledge the careers of those teachers who have decided to retire from our schools and the teaching profession. This year we have 2 staff who are retiring - Nanette Virgo and Jane Davies. We will be formally and respectfully celebrating the contribution and outstanding careers of both Nanette and Jane at the end of this term.

Congratulations to Georgii Staben who has won the internally advertised Technology Coach role for 2021. Kelly Mitchell undertook this role in 2020 and we acknowledge and appreciate all the support that Kelly provided to staff throughout this year.

Murray Oliver will continue his leave next year and we are hoping to finalise the backfilling of this in the next couple of weeks.

Gemma Dupont has won a position at Highgate Primary School as classroom French teacher in their Bilingual Program. Our congratulations to Gemma on this appointment and a huge thank you for her significant contribution and enthusiasm to teaching French to our children throughout 2020.

Jess Shea, the Speech Pathologist in our Speech and Language Class is also leaving us at the end of this year to work fulltime based in the Noarlunga Office. We welcome Grace Neale to the class from the beginning of 2021.

End of Year Reports & Self Relections Over several weeks, teachers have been busy writing end of year reports based on the growth and achievement of learning aligned with the Australian Curriculum. Reports will be available online Wednesday 9 December, using the Parent Portal you used to access the term 2 reports. Please contact our IT Technician if you have any issues with access: [email protected]. You will also use this same portal to access your child’s reflection on their learning and growth throughout the year. We trust that you will take time to share in your child’s successes and discuss areas for future growth.

Governing Council I would sincerely like to thank all Governing Council members for their involvement, support and advocacy of our school throughout this year. I also extend my sincere thanks to Anthony Venning as Chair, Ali Cameron-Edwards as Secretary and Lisa Richards as Treasurer, for their leadership and undertaking of roles on the GC Executive. A special thank you to Lisa Richards, Jen Slocombe and Julie Brookes who have indicated that they are not continuing in 2021.

Year 7 Graduation In a couple of weeks time we say farewell to our year 7 students (and some families too) who will participate in a Graduation Ceremony on Tuesday 8 December. This is a special time for children, staff and families where we acknowledge and celebrate the participation of all year 7 students who have been a central part of our school community over many years. Due to COVID there is a restriction on numbers for this event, therefore it will be live streamed. Information regarding this will be communicated closer to the event.

Last Day – Early Closure 2.05pm Please don’t forget that we close at 2.05pm on the last day of term – Friday 12 December. The OSHC service is available from this time.

Kind regards, Leanne

Literacy for All This week the Literacy Improvement Lead Team (LILT) presented to all staff our review of the 2020 site improvement plan outlining our achievements and challenges. We examined formative and assessment data as well as perception data from both staff and students. We gathered data from teachers about current evidence based practice, literacy coach support and planning using the Australian Curriculum.

We looked at teacher professional learning sessions this year and structures we had put in place to support differentiated targeted learning opportunities for all children.

We collected data from children to gain a deeper understanding about the achievements and challenges for children to grow as readers and writers.

Here are the questions we asked...

Do you think you have improved in your reading this year? How do you know? What makes you say that?

Do you think you have improved in your writing this year? How do you know? What makes you say that?

Do you talk to your classmates about your learning? What makes you say that?

Do you get to have a say in what you are learning about? What makes you say that?

What do you love learning about the most at school? What things make you want to keep learning and not stop? What makes you say that?

As a Literacy Improvement Lead Team (LILT) we presented a draft site improvement plan for 2021. Staff gave us feedback as to what were our excitements, worries, needs and suggestions for improvement. As a LILT team we will take onboard this feedback to refine our plans for next year. The LILT is keen to build on the work from this year to maintain the high standard of children's growth data. We understand literacy is in the maintenance phase for 2021 but a challenge for us is how do we maintain, build on this year's literacy improvement including pedagogical shifts.

Wellbeing and Engagement 7 Habits of Proactive Parents Justin Coulson is a respected family psychologist and has a podcast called Happy Families Podcast. I have included a link to this below. I have had the pleasure of attending one of his seminars a few years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. He is the father of 6 girls ranging from ages 8 to 19.

I saw his article on the 7 Habits of Positive Parenting and know that this has been a very hard year for many of us as parents to remain positive. I hope you can use a few of these points as I have to strengthen your family unity.

1. Family Motto - In short, what does your family stand for? With your family around the table ask this question. It helps to bring them back to this motto when things fall over.

2. Parent Retreat - This can be hard for some, but if you can get away for a night, a weekend so you can reflect on your families needs and generally get on the same page with ways to move your family forward in a positive way over the next few months. It also needs to service your needs as a couple so you can come back to your kids refreshed and focused.

3. Family Holidays - Get away together, even if just for a weekend. Leave the devices at home and look to develop experiences. It is hard at the start but really pays benefits at the end.

4. Family Dinner - A simple one, but effective. Turn the tv off. Ban devices for everyone and eat at least 4 meals a week together. Open up dialogue that everyone can talk about.

5. Devices away - I have mentioned this a few times already but develop a schedule for the family where devices go away (a central location controlled by parents) and talk or an activity is on the agenda.

6. Weekends - If your weekends are like mine you are getting around to many sports events, however that has slowed down at the moment. Try and find moments to get out and have a family experience- a walk down the beach, in a park with the dog, on a trail, go on a drive somewhere together.

7. Interviews - Sit down with each one of your children and have a conversation with them about what is happening for them, how are they going, what problems do they have, how would they like to be supported. This sounds formal but shows your kids that you consider it important to catch up with them and make time to listen to them.

School Sports in 2021 Coordinators needed URGENTLY!! A big thanks to Lauren and Steve for taking on footy and cricket. They are the new coordinators for these sports next year. We are still looking for a netball and a volleyball coordinator for next year. Without these two positions filled these sports will not go ahead in 2021. This would be devastating for the children at Paringa Park after the year it has been this year. Please have a think about this and if your child is involved in either netball or volleyball please consider putting your hand up for these roles.

A super giant thank you to Christie-Lee Hansberry, Julie Brookes and Maria Welsby for their outstanding contribution as Sports Committee members and Sport Coordinators. They are standing down for next year as coordinators.

One Plan Direction Change by the Department for Education Parents of children with a disability will have received an email by Monday 30 November. This will outline changes that the department and our school have actioned to ensure student plans are useful and easier to interpret. will benefit our children in 2021 and beyond. Please check your emails and if you have any questions please contact me at school.

Jamie Meredith Senior Leader – Wellbeing and Engagement In the Library Loop Library borrowing has officially ended for the year. Thank you to all the children that have returned their books and searched at home for any overdues. We still have over 360 books borrowed by children that need to be returned. We encourage all children to search their classroom and at home and return any items as soon as possible.

Thanking you, Tracey, Anne and Caroline Website Award Winners We are thrilled to announce that our new website has won the EdTechSA award for school website of the year for 2020! Uniform Update As we approach the end of the school year, our stock of uniforms is reduced. We will continue to take orders via Qkr, but please note that some items may sell out. We will have new stock delivered in January and will have all orders ready for collection on the dates below.

Pre-order and avoid the queues! The front office will be open for uniform sales on Thursday 21 & Friday 22 January from 9am-12pm, however we encourage families to pre-order their uniform needs via Qkr and we will have orders packed and ready for collection on these dates.

Attention year 5 & 6 families! You may be aware that children in year 6 and 7 will have the opportunity to wear a “seniors” polo next year. If your child has outgrown their current shirt and you are thinking of purchasing a new one, you may like to consider the seniors option.

If you didn’t order a seniors jumper for your child there will be another opportunity at the start of next year to purchase. Information will be sent home in week 1. Canteen News During the last week of school, the canteen will be taking lunch orders on Monday and Tuesday only, then open for snacks and ice blocks on Wednesday. The canteen will be closed on Thursday and Friday.

Stocks are running down for end of year so in some instances orders may need to be adjusted.

Please make sure that all debts owed to the canteen are finalised next week. Marketing in LA4-1 & 4-2 We in LA 4-2 and LA 4-1 have done a project based on marketing. We learnt about advertising and in particular as a consumer how do we make choices, how colours represent different emotions and branding. We also learned about how different colours are used to enhance logos and connect to slogans that hook you into buying their product and to remember what they sell. We had an end goal to design our own logos and create one that represents ourselves, then we would screen print them onto t-shirts with the help of our teachers. We really enjoyed creating these and learning about marketing.

Paringa Giving Tree Dear Families,

I hope this finds you well.

This year we will be having a Giving Tree. In past years our school community has generously supported a range of causes at this time. Donations will be given to Anglicare and distributed to local families in need during the Christmas and holiday season.

Donations of non-perishable food would be appreciated: Canned goods, packets of pasta, rice, biscuits, chips, special food items such as chocolates, Christmas pudding or Christmas treats.

Please place any donations under the Giving Tree in the front office. We will be collecting until the end of term.

Thankyou for your kindness.

Anita Trainor Pastoral Care Worker Instrumental Music A reminder for all children who hire a musical instrument from the school: instruments must be returned to school by the end of week 8. Annual maintenance is performed at the end of the year so it is important that ALL instruments are returned, even if you are continuing on next year. Swimming It was unfortunate that the reception to year 5 children were unable to attend the water safety (swimming) lessons this year, however we would like to reassure you that all families that paid will receive a credit on their account which can be used against any expenses next year.

We are also aware that the year 6/7 children missed out on their make up day for aquatics. If any further activities which are paid for are cancelled, you will receive a credit, or we will be in touch with those families who will be leaving Paringa Park at the end of this year.

Thank you for your understanding.

Mathematics MathsCraft Session at Woodcroft College MathsCraft - doing maths like a research mathematician www.mathscraft.org

MathsCraft was a fun event for kids in years 6-9 to work with others and mathematicians from Adelaide University. Ella, Grace and Miles from year 6 attended with Margy. We got to work through problems and learn about different kinds of maths thinking and ways to view problem solving.

Some of the problems we had to solve were:

Top Heavy Pyramid https://nrich.maths.org/1865 We were given 4, 5, 6 and 7 digit combinations to work with. We had to figure out how many different arrangements you could have on the bottom row, and then figure out how many different possible peaks there were by creating addition pyramids.

Stacking Cans We looked at triangular and trapezium numbers and we had to try and stack different numbers of cans. We set rules, you had one less than the one before, you had to have more than one row and no half cans. We looked at what numbers you couldn’t use and discovered that they had the lowest common factor of 2.

Race to the Nugget Game - a fun strategy game we played where you had to make your way across a grid and be first to reach the golden nugget. We explored a range of strategies to win and used maths language to explain our thinking.

By Grace, Ella and Miles

Miles - I enjoyed working with our mathematician Joshua the most because he helped me really understand how to work through complicated problems.

Ella - The problems were interesting but not what I expected. My favourite part was working with our mathematician, Josh. He asked the right questions to help me think about the maths differently.

Grace - I enjoyed working with all the problems even though they were challenging. Josh was great because he explained how we could work things out.

Margy - it was fantastic to see our Paringa Park students challenging themselves, persisting with difficult problems, collaborating with each other and the mathematician, and sharing ideas with the whole group. It was a fun morning of maths, maths and more maths!

Margy Holland Senior Leader Mathematics R-7

Cubby Building We are looking at adding to the loose parts play next year and we need your help!

On International Mud Day we noticed that cubby building was a very engaging and challenging activity. It gave the children an opportunity to use their cooperation and teamwork skills! So we wanted to bring it to Paringa permanently.

We have already sourced some go-karting tyres which form the base of the cubbies. Now we need some sticks to create the teepee sides.

In the holidays when you are out in nature and you spy some long, sturdy branches we ask that you please bring them to school next year.

We look forward to adding to our loose parts play.

Thank you, The Environment Committee SAPSASA It has been busy with a number of events squeezed into this term. We were lucky that most earlier postponed events were able to go ahead.

Basketball – Our year 7 boys team made it to the zone final. They had an amazing day but Woodville were too good at the final match.

Lacrosse – Five teams of year 4-6 players had a successful day at the local carnival. One team finished 3rd, a year 4/5 girls team finished 1st and a year 4/5 boys team also finished 1st.

Softball – Congratulations Mitchell E who represented South West District in the boys softball state carnival. They finished 3rd in Div 1.

Athletics – 46 athletes from years 4-7 competed at SANTOS stadium in the district athletics day. There were a number of personal bests and place getters, and our school finished 2nd overall! Awesome! Six students were selected in the South West District team to compete in the State Championships. Well done to Isaiah, Hazel, Ava K, Ava W, Duncan and Eddie S. Unfortunately they didn’t get to compete as it was cancelled last week!

Beach Volleyball – 11 teams braved cold, wet and windy conditions at Glenelg beach. There were many close matches during the day. 5 teams made it into the finals, with 3 of them progressing to the Grand Finals. Congratulations to the year 6 girls team and year 7 boys team who both won gold!

WOW! What a year it has been in PE and SAPSASA this year. We have made many adjustments to activities during lessons, and unfortunately cancelled some things altogether. However, this has built resilience in all of us and I have been proud with the way children have adapted to changes and continued their learning.

Adelaide 36ers Visit Our first day back this term was exciting with a visit from the Adelaide 36ers basketball team. LA 4-1 & LA 4-2 had a clinic with the players, followed by the whole school watching and cheering as a year 7 team played against the 36ers. Congratulations to Brooke C who won the poster competition. Every student then received a ‘Game Day’ top and collected autographs from the players. It was a great afternoon!

PE WEEK Be Active Morning

It was great to celebrate PE Week with a whole school ‘Active Morning’.

We started with an assembly, hosted by our House Captains, highlighting our sporting achievements. The skipping team then performed their competition routines. This was followed by a quick whole school workout, including a squat challenge!

The children then had time to choose from a range of activities around the school to stay active for the next hour! They did such a great job, with many of them mixing with different year levels.
