Dear Parents/Guardians,

In Flanders Fields by John McCrae, May 1915

In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row,

That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago

We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie

In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe:

To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high.

If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow

In Flanders fields.

During the Second Battle of Ypres a Canadian artillery officer, Lieutenant Alexis Helmer, was killed on 2nd May, 1915 by an exploding shell. He was a friend of the Canadian military doctor Major John McCrae. John was asked to conduct the burial service owing to the chaplain being called away on duty elsewhere. It is believed that later that evening John began the draft for his famous poem 'In Flanders Fields'.

In Australia the November 11th is a day to remember those who died in war. The 11th of November 1918, saw the end of the First World War. Remembrance Day was originally called Armistice Day. After the end of the Second World War in 1945, the Australian and British Governments changed the name to Remembrance Day as an appropriate title for a day which would commemorate all war dead. Australians observe one minute's silence at 11.00 am on Remembrance Day. We reflect on and thank the many brave men and women who served during the war, many of whom made the ultimate sacrifice ensuring the freedom of our great land. Tomorrow, we will remember those who gave of their lives at a whole School Assembly.

Our shortlisted team of students were sent to a panel of high profile Australian leaders for judging based on the following criteria:

IDEA

Students came together with the goal of achieving something that ordinarily they would not have been able to do on their own or in the everyday execution of their student leadership duties.

Each member of the team made a valuable contribution to the achievement of the goal.

MPACT

A measurable result of the team’s effort can be identified eg social, financial, cultural benefit etc.

ST BRIGID’S COLLEGE TRIP TO ITALY

Expression of Interest St Brigid’s Italy Trip 2018

It is proposed that St Brigid’s College hold a College Trip to Italy during the Australian summer school holidays, leaving a few days after Christmas.

Staff and students currently working or enrolled at the College are invited to register an Expression of Interest by completing this form and returning it to Jeni Allen.

The cost is estimated, in the early planning stages, at approximately $6,000 per person, all inclusive apart from personal/discretionary spending money.

Dates are tentatively proposed as from Dec 28th or 29th – January 17th or 18th . The Tour will commence in Milan (shopping! fashion! Gardaland Fun/Theme Park!), and include time in Venice (gondolas! Glass art!) via Verona, Maranello (Ferrari factory!), Florence, Siena (Tuscan farmstay), a visit to Pisa (Leaning Tower!), Perugia (chocolate factory and sightseeing and a REST DAY!), Rome (the Vatican and of course the ruins and the shopping, shopping shopping!) and perhaps Pompei.

Please return this form to Ms Allen, with your name and a parent signature. If there is sufficient interest at this first stage, a meeting will be held in early December for all people who have registered.

I ............................................. would like to know more about the proposed St Brigid’s trip to Italy.

My parents and I will try to attend a meeting about the trip in December when we are given a date.

This semester's work in Year 10 Art has focused on creating a mural for the Bennet Road Kindergarten.

The project began with brainstorming, researching and putting all our ideas together. After sharing our ideas with the Kindergarten and working with their feedback, the final design was not fully developed until mid way through Term 3. Then while making the murals, lots of details and decisions continually need to be decided and resolved with the creative process being a continual and reflective one. After almost 10 weeks of painting, the two 1.8m x 1.2m panels are finished and will soon be put into position at Bennett Road Kindergarten.

The final result for all the hard work and effort of students Montana Reinheimer, Lara Schmidt and Hayley Ramsay will be to see the works in position and in the playground area with the kids they were designed to entertain. This mural will sit alongside murals painted by St.Brigid's College Year 10 Art students in 2016, continuing our involvement with the community across all areas of the school.
