  • 1Welcome to Fall! Our office greeted the new season by hosting two community festivals in September, and I hope everyone had a great time at these events! In addition to bringing fun, family-friendly events to our community, our offices vision of a more connected district continues with the creation of the Sunset Districts very own Resilient Sunset plan. Resilient Sunset is a community-based initiative that will increase the neighborhoods ability to reduce the impact of threats, such as earthquakes and tsunamis; increase its ability to respond and bounce back to times of stress; and provide a strong focus on protecting our most vulnerable neighbors.

With the ever rising threat of earthquakes and other disasters, this new concept aims to make the district prepared for anything. Modeled after the successful Resilient plan in the Bayview District, this project aims to create a plan of action in the event of a disaster, directing where residents should go for resources that would otherwise be unavailable. The recurring underlying theme of major catastrophes is the inaccessibility of basic needs such as food, water, medical supplies, and shelter. Furthermore, past events - such as the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina back in 2005 - has proved that waiting for outside aid will result in the unnecessary loss of lives post-disaster. The Resilient program prepares for such a situation through meticulous planning, education and mobilization of resources, which will ultimately reduce the number of casualties sustained during and after a disaster.

Please join me and City departments, including Department of Emergency Management, SF NERT, Department of Public Health, Department of Human Services, and the Red Cross, at one of the Resilient Sunset Summits below.

  • 3We cannot predict exactly when a disaster or emergency will occur. However, we can take measures to prepare for an emergency that will help prevent damage and loss to our community. Our office will provide helpful information and resources on emergency preparedness so that District 4 residents may take precautionary steps from www.sf72.org.

With California facing one of the most severe droughts on record, we should be more proactive on water conservation. In our last months newsletter, we discussed general water conservation tips. This month, we will focus on outdoor water conservation tips:

Plant native and/or drought-tolerant grasses, ground covers, shrubs, and trees. Once established, plants adapted to your local climate do not need water as frequently and usually will survive a dry period without watering. Small plants require less water to become established. Group plants together based on similar water needs

Install irrigation devices that are the most water efficient for each use, such as micro and drip irrigation and soaker hoses

Use mulch to retain moisture in the soil. Mulch also helps control weeds that compete with landscape plants for water

Avoid purchasing recreational water toys that require a constant stream of water Avoid installing ornamental water features (such as fountains) unless they use re-circulated water Consider rainwater harvesting where practical

If you want to learn more water conservation tips, please visit: www.ready.gov/drought.

  • 4RECAP ON NEIGHBORHOOD EVENTS

About 200 community members joined us on September 14th to discuss public safety issues in the Sunset District with Chief of Police Greg Suhr, District Attorney George Gascon, Captain of Taraval Station Denise Flaherty, and Assemblymember Phil Ting. Neighbors asked questions regarding topics such as police staffing, prosecution in light of state law changes, and the need for community reporting. We thank everyone who came out to discuss these important issues and our office is committed to continuing the dialogue and working together with our law enforcement partners.

We encourage neighbors to participate in Captain Flahertys monthly meetings at Taraval Police Station, which will take place every third Wednesday at 7:00pm starting in November.

MEET DISTRICT 4 YOUTH COMMISSIONER: STEPHANIE LI

District 4 residents and merchants: I am delighted to meet you through this newsletter! My name is Stephanie Li, and I am honored to be the Youth Commissioner representing District 4 for the 2015 - 2016 term. As a District 4 resident myself having lived in the Outer Sunset since I first immigrated to America at the age of four I aim to carry many of your voices to the Commission and be able to reflect your needs and concerns in our work.

I am currently a senior at Lowell High School, and I believe that the extracurricular activities I have been involved in the past few years will serve as a good basis for me to begin my work as a Commissioner. As an assistant editor for The Lowell, the school magazine, I have written many articles pertaining to changes affecting the youth at school and in the city, from the addition of new ethnic studies classes at SFUSD high schools this year, to the need for free college counseling services for low-income youth as the use of private, expensive college counseling services rise. I also actively take part in mentoring students at my school through the Peer Mentoring program for freshmen and through the California Scholarship Federation tutoring system. In order to better understand how to best help youth, I also spent a rewarding six weeks this summer at UC Santa Barbara conducting policy research on what methods and factors contribute most to the effectiveness of youth employment programs.

The valuable knowledge gained from the research opportunity, coupled with my own experiences as a Chinese immigrant, have encouraged me to join the Economic Justice and Immigration Committee on the Youth Commission. In my new role, I hope to gain ground in helping not only immigrant youth succeed, but also providing youth with the economic means to reach success. I am looking forward to working together with my fellow Commissioners, with City officials and most importantly, with all of you, to bring San Franciscos youth issues to the forefront and tackle them accordingly. In doing so, we can shape San Francisco into an even better city for youth to thrive in together.

  • 5RECAP ON NEIGHBORHOOD EVENTS

On September 12th, more than 500 neighbors attended the Sunset District Autumn Moon Festival hosted by our office and the Outer Sunset Merchant & Professional Association (OSMPA). Participants enjoyed cultural performances and visited booths that showcased artwork, food, and community services. Mayor Ed Lee, Assemblymember Phil Ting, OSMPA President Bill Barnickel, Assessor-Recorder Carmen Chu, and event sponsors joined us at the opening ceremony that featured traditional lion dancing. We would like to extend our thanks to our partners and sponsors for making this festival a successful event that reflected the cultural diversity of the Sunset District.

On September 19th, our office hosted the 21st Annual Sunset Community Festival at West Sunset Playground, along with Sunset Youth Services. This year, we partnered with Sunset Mercantile for the first time to bring local pop-up artisans, merchants and food vendors to the neighborhood.

Our office was proud to host the Sunset Community Festival for the first time this year and carry on the neighborhood tradition. The festival began in 1994 and was founded by the Sunset District Neighborhood Coalition, led by Dawn and Ron Steuckle, co-founders of Sunset Youth Services. The Sunset Community Festival brings together hundreds of residents for a day of family fun and celebrates all that our neighborhood has to offer. The festival this year featured over 40 local pop-up vendors and food trucks, a talented line-up of local musical and dance performances, and childrens activities courtesy of the Friends of West Sunset.

We would like to extend our thanks and appreciation to our partners, neighbors, and families that continue to support this long standing tradition of building community. For more photos from the event, visit: http://on.fb.me/1ix0dI8.

  • 6RECAP ON NEIGHBORHOOD EVENTS

Supervisor Tang visited Abraham Lincoln High School on September 14th for a demonstration of new virtual reality simulators that show how driving can be significantly impaired when texting at the same time. As the use of smartphones become a more prominent part of our daily lives, this was an eye-opening simulation and reminder that no text is worth the risk while you are driving, and to exercise caution while on the road whether you are a driver, bicyclist, or a pedestrian. Lets all do our part to help reduce dangerous driving on SF streets and bring our city one step closer to Vision Zero.

Please join Supervisor Tang in her pledge to keep her eyes on the road and not text and drive. We encourage you to watch this video and remember that no text is worth the risk: https://youtu.be/dht-Vy25jPsVirtual Reality Simulators at

On September 13, Francis Scott Key Elementary Schools yard was opened to the community as part of the Shared Schoolyard Project. The project is a partnership between the City of San Francisco, the San Francisco Unified School District, and San Franciscos neighborhoods and communities that provides a place for children and families to play and gather within walking distance of every child in San Francisco. Francis Scott Key is one of 28 public schools across the City enrolled in the program, and its schoolyard will be open to the community from 9:00am - 4:00pm every Saturday and Sunday year-round.

    Cornerstone Church Sunset Boulevard Clean-Up

On September 13, over 200 volunteers from Cornerstone Church came out to the district to help clean up Sunset Boulevard. Over 15 teams of volunteers spread out from Judah to Wawona Streets, removing litter, glass, and debris. The extraordinary effort makes our public areas cleaner and safer for neighbors. On behalf of the Sunset District, we extend our many thanks to Cornerstone Church for their commitment to community service and involvement!

  • 7The San Francisco Planning Department is responsible for preserving and enhancing the City by creating citywide and neighborhood plans on various topics such as housing, transportation, and open space. The Planning Departments efforts usually include some type of public involvement that allows you to be actively involved in the process of shaping a plan or improvement.

If you are interested in engaging at a deeper level in the Citys land use discussions, the Planning Department has created a video to help residents take an active part in planning for their neighborhood: https://youtu.be/hOZAHBEK01g. Residents can also learn about upcoming community meetings by signing up for electronic notifications at: signup.sfplanning.org. Finally, the Plans & Programs section at sfplanning.org is another great resource for upcoming projects and events.

Upon entering this Hong Kong-style dessert cafe, you will realize that Prince Cooking is appropriately named. Its chandeliers, purple velvet seating, and delicious treats will certainly make you feel like royalty. Prince Cooking provides a variety of desserts that include papaya sago, mango pudding, and Baked Alaska (yes, they do set that last one on fire). For those craving a more savory and filling meal, Prince Cooking has a surprisingly extensive menu that serve dishes such as chicken steak spaghetti, rib eye steak, crab meat pasta and much more.

Prince Cooking is also a participating location for Choosing Healthy Appetizing Meal Plan Solutions for Seniors (CHAMPSS), which aims to bring affordable meals to San Franciscos senior population. Seniors enrolled in the program are given a special dietitian-approved menu where they can pick a main dish, beverage, and dessert for free with a CHAMPSS card (or a suggested donation of $3.50). With a limited number of senior centers that serve low-cost meals to seniors in the Outer Sunset, Prince Cookings participation in the program is a welcome resource to the community and we extend our thanks to owner and District 4 resident Maggie Kuang!

The next time youre feeling regal or craving a late night dessert (theyre open until midnight or later), be sure to make Prince Cooking your destination.

For more information on the CHAMPSS program, please visit: www.sfchampss.org.
