“What is God?” When I ask young people that, they usually give me a funny look and say something like, “What do you mean? God is God!” Having grown up in church, they simply

assume that there is an invisible, all-powerful and loving Spirit above and behind all things. While the existence of one God may seem obvious to us, throughout human history many folks were polytheistic, believing in a multiplicity of dark deities. Reading the stories of the old pagan “gods” is a frightful experience: they are filled with “gods” fighting amongst themselves, lying, cheating, and murdering.1 And in case you think paganism is just for the history books, a Norse pagan temple opened in Iceland last winter.2 There has also been a steady rise in folks who are skeptical of any religious claim, either rejecting God’s existence (“atheist”) or with-holding a decision on the matter (“agnostic”). Pollster George Barna reports that 1/ 4 of your unchurched neighbors are either atheist or agnostic.3 Yet the Westminster Shorter Catechism Q/A 4-11 (see below) tells us that there is one God in three Persons. God is a “Tri-Unity:” The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit dancing together in everlasting love and oneness. But what difference does it make whether we believe in a single Triune God, or 17 gods, or a million gods, or none at all?4 ___________________________

It makes a tremendous difference. The notion that the one God is a “Tri-Unity” shapes our entire understanding of who God is. Think of it like this: we sometimes think of “God” as a solitary king sitting far away in heaven. The essence of a god like that could be power or might. The primary characteristic of a god like that could be peace or silence or grandeur. There’s only one thing such a deity could not be: Love! Our Triune God is not only infinite in power, always true, and en-tirely wise, he is also good, merciful, and filled with steadfast love. Because God is the Holy Trinity, love is not just something God does, love is an essential aspect of who God is.4 That’s a fact that should encourage your heart today! Because it means that not only is God all-mighty, he also takes great delight in you and “rejoices over you with singing.”5 It means that God’s plan for your life (and all creation!) is good and will not be thwart-ed by anything on earth! We call this God’s “providence,” namely, the fact that God has a blueprint – a master plan – for all creation and all time and all of your life (“the decrees of God”). God is not surprised by events, and nothing can upset his good purposes. While some folks recoil at the idea that “God is in control,” we Christians can rejoice in it, because it means that we are in Jesus’ hands! John Calvin, a French Reformed pastor who suffered per-secution, multiple job losses, illness, and the premature death of his wife and only child, wrote, “Thus it is that we may patiently pass through this life with its misery, hunger, cold, contempt, re-proaches, and other troubles – content with this one thing: that our King [Jesus] will never leave us destitute, but will provide for our needs until, our warfare ended, we are called to triumph.”6

Questions for Reflection: - How does the doctrine of the “Trinity” help you understand

God? - What is God’s “providence”? What does it include? - Is God’s providence a comfort to you? Why/Why not?

Ministry Minute

This fall there are still many opportunities for Christians of all ages to learn and to grow. Some of them are at the times when you would “expect” Christian education to take place. Sunday at 9:10 there is Sunday School for all ages including adults. Parish Associate Al Sager is teaching a class for adults about the importance and nature of mission and why this is important for the church. On Wednesday nights there are activities for K-12 and also for people who like to sing and want to share their talent. The Logos youth program starts with Supper at 6 followed by a variety of classes and activities, and this ends at 7:45. The Praise Team and Choir also meet on Wednesday nights at 5:10 and 6:30 respectively. Some take place at times that you would not expect, there is a Bi-ble Study during Halftime of the Monday Night Football game. At noon on Thursday I am leading a book study on John Ortberg’s book, When the Game is Over It A ll Goes Back in The Box. Feel free to bring a lunch along and eat while we discuss where we need to put our focus and our energy. I would invite anyone who is interested to come and give these op-portunities a chance. Even if you missed the “start” date, please do not let that scare you away from joining something in the middle. I can promise you that you will be welcomed. May the Peace of Christ be with you,

Chad Zachriosn

Member Highlights David Hook David was born in 1951 in Huron to Beverly and Wayne Hook. They, along with their daughter, Linda, lived on a farm near town. Linda

(Paul) Garafalon, a nurse, lives in Seat-tle. Wayne passed away from cancer in 2001, and Beverly is now living in Seattle with Linda. David attended high school in Huron and was a state wrestling champion, weighing only 127 pounds. In 1969 he had a car accident. He was uncon-scious for a number of weeks and it left him with paralysis, unable to walk and was in a wheel chair. He went back to school in 1971 and graduated. He then went to Huron College part time but had difficulty writing because of dam-aged hands. He transferred to USD in Vermillion for one year. He then re-

turned home and worked with his parents. Wayne sold furniture to wholesale outlets while Beverly sold custom drapery. During this time Grandma Joyce, who was living in Minneapolis, came to live on the farm and helped David who was classified as handicapped. They would go hunting llamas, beavers, coyotes and bobcats, then they would make them into rugs and wall hangings. He really loved ani-mals and raised goats, peacocks, ducks, geese, and wild turkeys. His favorites were the goats. People came from many states around South Dakota to purchase them. In 1980 he planted 5000 trees on the farm but only a few apples trees because of the work involved, picking up fallen apples. It is hard work. His buddy, Mike, has helped him by making repairs in the house. Friends, Lenore and Peggy, often visited him on the farm and now enjoy playing Dominoes with him. About three years ago David moved into town. He has had cancer three times, two big operations, and radiation in Mitchell 24 times. He has had a great garden with Brussels sprouts, huge cabbages, tomatoes, orange peppers, and kohlrabi. His favorite things are still animals. In 2009 he was able to have an ESA dog. (Emotional Support Animal) His dog’s name is Bob and David really appreciates him. David started going to First Presbyterian when he was five years old and has been a member for fifty years. He served two terms as a Deacon. He really enjoys hearing the Bible read out loud, appreci-ates Andrew and Chad and getting to be around people at the pot-lucks.

FALL SUPPER

The Annual Fall Supper will be held on October 23rd from 4:30 – 7:00 PM. We will be serving a ham and turkey dinner with all the trim-mings and some really yummy deserts.

We are looking for help preparing for the meal, setting up silent auc-tion and serving the meal. We are also asking that groups in the church make a basket to be sold on the silent auction. We invite indi-viduals to bring something to the silent auction such as a basket of a theme of your choice, baked goods or a new item that you have made or purchased. No white elephant items please. This year all proceeds are going to the improvement of the north entry to the church and the east room. If you would like to make a donation to this project in addition to the supper we will have a special donation box there the night of the supper or you can send a check to the church and mark it to be given to the East Room project.

The Fall Supper committee is grateful to everyone that supports the supper in any way. We could not be able to do it without the help of our church family. God has blessed us with many gifts of talent and support.
