Tuesday, January 10, 2017: Tour of Raoul Textiles Note Date: Second week in January, Tuesday instead of Saturday This month we have a special private tour of Raoul Textiles here in Santa Barbara. The tour is for guild members only. Please sign up in advance as space may be limited. “Raoul Textiles is a family-owned design firm based in Santa Barbara, California. Founder and designer Sally McQuillan and her husband Tim started Raoul textiles in a Quonset hut by the beach in 1981; the company has since grown into an influential force in the industry, renowned for its vibrant sense of color and innovative, unexpected approach to design. The collection is hand-printed on the finest Belgian linen; every step of the process is still done by hand in our factory, from the earliest sketches to the original ink recipes and hand-built screens. We also design a custom collection of fine woven fabric from Belgium, Scotland and France. Designers and their clients love the line for its bold color and scale, diverse inspiration and old-world craftsmanship.”

Saturday, February 4th, 2017: Everything You Wanted to Know About Paper But Didn’t Know Who to Ask Location TBA For forty years, Jill Littlewood has been exploring different parts of the book. Beginning with a degree in drawing from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, she later studied letterpress printing at the Woman’s Building in Los Angeles. Scientific illustration for the Natural Museum of Los Angeles followed, along with Western and Chinese calligraphy, classes in bookbinding, and finally papermaking. Some of her works push the line between book art and installations: they are books you walk through, entirely made of handmade paper, with hundreds of her illustrations and writings imbedded in them. Most recently Jill has been making sculptural pieces out of her handmade paper.

Bev Ryan’s Saori Workshop

From Bev: “No Rules, No Restrictions. Weave yourself” SAORI weaving on Salt Spring Island In August I went to a very fun week long SAORI weaving workshop. This isn’t a learn to weave workshop (although you could be a complete beginner), so much as a “free yourself up and change your attitude” workshop. I came away with several samples, a blouse, and shoulder bag and lots of ideas. More information can be found at: http://saoriglobal.com/what-is-saori/ or http://www.saorinomori.com/eng/en_saori.html My trip was organized by Loom Dancer Weaving Odysseys, although this was more workshop than tour, we only spent one day touring. A brief video of the week is at: http://loomdancerodysseys.com/short-videos-of-our-trips/saori-weaving/saori-august-2016 If you are interested there is a SAORI studio much closer than British Columbia, in Sherman Oaks: http://www.saoristudiola.com/
