Our Year 12 students celebrating the delivery of their Seniors jumpers last week!

Students have embraced opportunities to return to the great outdoors in the last fortnight, with orienteering and rock climbing, knockout football and netball, cross country and a vast array of excursions and incursions. The Leadership Team are closely monitoring the advice of SA Health to ensure that all activities are conducted in accordance with COVID safety regulations. We thank you for your respect and understanding throughout this difficult year. We are mindful of the enormous challenges that schools in Victoria and NSW are facing, especially our friends in Mercy Education, and we continue to pray for all those impacted by this pandemic.

From The PrincipalFrom the Principal continued...

Two highlights of the 2020 calendar for our senior Maths students were the MASA Quiz Night and the Australian Mathematics Competition, both of which took place this fortnight. Year 8 and 10 students took part in Science and Forensics workshops respectively and Year 3 students enjoyed a Lego STEM Expo in the McAuley Auditorium. All these activities provide some insight into how staff at the College encourage students to recognise the relevance and importance of Science and Maths in our lives, and this is reflected in the large proportion (75 to 80%) of students who continue to study Maths and Science subjects through to Year 12 level at SAC each year. Similarly, recent Languages Days and excursions, along with study tours and exchanges, maintain excitement and enrolments in Languages other than English and ensure that our graduates are truly global citizens.

Students in Years 10 and 11 have been busy preparing for subject selections for Stage 1 and 2 subjects in the South Australian Certificate of Education. This process requires high quality information about pathways and a strong partnership between home and school to ensure students make choices that best support their preferred futures. The Information Evening for parents was presented as a webinar and we hope that this session was accessible and informative. As always, we encourage you to contact the College to engage in further dialogue about the possibilities and pathways for your daughter in the senior years and beyond school.

The Education Council recently published a review of senior secondary pathways into work, further education and training entitled Looking to the Future. The report acknowledges how the uncertainty and disruption created by COVID 19 has had a profound impact on the way young people think about and plan for their future. At St Aloysius College, we take our responsibility for guiding students towards the future with hope and confidence very seriously, and our Mercy values provide a strong basis for decisions that support each student’s aspirations for her future. The report acknowledges the importance of developing the whole person, and recognises that academic achievement is one part of education but it is not the whole story. I know that the pages of our newsletters capture the full breadth of experiences of education at SAC, celebrating each moment in a child’s educational journey.

Kate O’Reilly, one of our secondary Art, Design and Religious Education teachers, has recently been diagnosed with breast cancer and has taken leave immediately to undergo treatment. I know that Kate has appreciated the expressions of love and support from her colleagues, students and their families at this challenging time. Each year when we celebrate Pink Day in Term 4, we realise that so many within our community have been affected by breast cancer, and our support for one another is an incredible source of strength for many. We welcome Andre Mosca, who will take Kate’s classes during her absence and thank the wonderful Art Faculty for their strength and generosity at this time.

Walk-A-MileLast Friday, 30 girls, five staff and one parent from St Aloysius College walked-a-mile for Hutt Street Centre. We had an early start, meeting at school at 7.20am to walk through the city, past the homelessness shelter and eventually making it back to school to share hot chocolates as a group. Walk-A-Mile is an event organised annually by Hutt Street Centre, which unfortunately was cancelled this year due to COVID. Our SAC team raised almost $500 for the cause. Year 10 Languages DayOn Friday 31 July, all Year 10 Language students participated in Languages Day. In 2020, Languages Day felt even more special because the opportunity to come together and step out of the classroom to celebrate our learning has become that much more precious. Our guest speaker, old scholar Abbey Hollamby, echoed this sentiment in her inspiring speech – saying that our current world situation should inspire us to seize every opportunity that comes our way because we never know what’s around the corner, and also that the times we are experiencing right now are living proof of how interconnected and global our world has become.

The Italian group started the day with a fun-filled scavenger hunt and then exercised their Italian singing skills to work up an appetite for their delicious pizza lunch. After lunch, the group had an opportunity to chat with some girls studying senior Italian and then settled in to watch an Italian film called Johnny Stecchino.

Meanwhile, the English (EAL) students had an opportunity to enjoy a cultural film in the morning, and then tucked into a delicious meal of cold rolls and pizzas. In the afternoon, the girls decorated some beautiful plates and there was much conversation practice and laughter coming from the EAL room.

An excited group of Indonesian students met a lovely young man called Jarrad, who shared some insights with them about Indonesia, and then went to Pondok Daun for a delicious traditional meal, before returning to school on very full stomachs to watch a film. Students reported “the food was so delicious and there was so much of it!” and “I absolutely loved the film ‘Ada Apa dengan Cinta’ - I can’t wait to study more about it next year”.

The Chinese students enjoyed a thoughtful presentation from some students studying senior Chinese and then were treated to some new skill building, learning traditional Chinese paper crafting. This was followed by an enjoyable film and some very competitive Chinese games in the afternoon.

Year 10 Languages Day!

The French group headed out into the beautiful sunny weather to enjoy a (very close) game of pétanque on the lawns of Victoria Square. This helped them to work up an appetite before their lunch at French creperie Carpe Diem, where students tested out their skills ordering meals in French and chatted about their lives in French conversation.

Languages Day was a fantastic celebration of just how far the Year 10 students have come in developing their skills. Our dedicated staff are always very proud of our students’ accomplishments, but particularly so this year and it was wonderful to see how everyone really embraced Abbey’s advice and made the most of our Languages Day 2020.

Celebrating Creation - Year 9 RetreatCelebrating Creation was the focus of the Year 9 retreat. The retreat builds on the Year 9 Creation Unit in which we explore the way in which the creation accounts in Genesis, along with scientific explanations including Natural Selection and the Big Bang reflect our innate desire to understand the why and how of our existence.

The retreat is designed to expand the students’ understanding of what it means to be made in the image of God by seeing all creation as an image of God and exploring the way in which we are all interconnected in the one story of the universe.

From the Archives - Girl Guides and Brownies

The first St Aloysius Catholic Girl Guide company was formed in 1929. It was registered under the name of 2nd Adelaide (St Aloysius’) Guide Company. This company was headed by Molly M. Gunson, Acting-Captain. There is very little information available concerning the history of the Guiding Movement at SAC, but in the 1967 Annual an article appeared regarding the school Brownies. We would be grateful to receive any information about the activities of SAC guides and brownies and any photographs as well.

Solving Challenges with Chemistry Skills!Students in Year 11 learned how to measure the boiling points of volatile liquids and used this skill to solve a STEM problem – how to distinguish liquids using their boiling points. Selecting from a list of possible identities, students worked at identifying liquids W, X, Y, and Z. By collaborating and communicating their results to each other, the class did in fact solve the challenge!

SAPSASA and SACPSSA Sport is well and truly catching up from the

quiet Term 2.

Last week the Year 3 to7 netball players competed in the Catholic Netball Carnival in a round robin day. It was a great lead up event for our Year 6/7 knockout team who dominated in Week 3, to beat Black Forest and Pulteney Grammar convincingly for a spot in the next round. Our next games will be in the coming weeks! Our Year 3 to 7 students competed in the Catholic Cross Country Carnival on Thursday and braved freezing conditions to perform to a high standard. Afterschool Sport

It has been a busy couple of weeks in Primary Sport. Our Term 3 teams are almost halfway through the winter sports program. This week saw our Year 2 to 6 girls compete for the first time in the SANFL schools competition on Saturday mornings. It is fantastic to see the large amount of interest shown and the desire from the girls to get in and compete with the boys. I certainly predict some AFLW players of the future. Our Year 3-5 U-11 Lacrosse team won their 1st game of the season on Saturday, I received lots of positive feedback from our supervising teacher, Ms Griffiths and coach, Ruby Zada-Boatwright about the Year 5 leadership of our new Year 3 players and the large improvement the team has displayed. Our Year 1 and Year 2/3 students are in their final weeks of Come ‘n’ Try sessions for the term and have displayed their skills in mini-tennis and lacrosse. Reception students will commence their Come ‘n’ Try sessions on Tuesday in Week 6 and are participating in Gymnastics until Week 9.

Term 3 Secondary Sport

Term 3 Secondary Sport is well underway with netball, lacrosse and badminton teams having played three rounds of their Saturday morning winter season. It has been great to see so many students approaching both training and games with commitment, positivity and teamwork. It has also been pleasing to hear positive feedback from coaches and supervising teachers about the successes our teams are experiencing and the excitement in which they are approaching each game. We are even lucky enough to have all SAC netball teams currently sitting in the top 3 on their respective premiership tables! This term, we have had three AFL teams competing for SAC on Wednesday afternoons. The girls play their games between St Ignatius and CBC oval, and have had some great success over the first three rounds. It has been great seeing the enthusiasm from all teams and the girls’ skill level improving throughout the competition. We are looking forward to continuing our involvement and further developing our students’ AFL skills in future years. A big thank you to staff coaches, Ms Wedding, Mr Cotton and Mr Heath.

Term 4 Secondary Sport

Nominations for Term 4 Secondary Sport will be opening up in the coming week. Summer sports offered are: waterpolo, tennis, volleyball, touch football, fitness and dance. More information about these sports can be found in the secondary sport handbook. Nominations must be completed online via the online payments link on the SAC website. Permission forms will be issued to all nominated students once they have nominated and must be returned by the due date outlined on the top of the form in order to participate. Information packs regarding Term 4 sport will be available on SEQTA towards the end of this term. I ask that all students and parents read this carefully so they are fully aware of the details regarding each sport.

Secondary Knockout Sport - Round 1 Results

The first three weeks of term have been jam-packed with round 1 knockout competitions, with our AFL, netball, soccer and volleyball teams travelling around Adelaide to compete against various schools. We kicked things off with the 8/9 Knockout round robin competition at Kingswood Oval. Staff member Tom Cotton coached our girls through some competitive matches against Adelaide Botanic and Mitcham Girls High School. Our tackling pressure was outstanding and the girls showed real grit throughout both matches. Unfortunately, the team didn’t come away with the win, but we are excited to continue to develop our skills and strengthen our involvement with AFLW in the future. We are excited to announce that the 6/7 and 8/9 Knockout Netball teams won their first round matches during Week 2 and will be progressing through to round 2. This is a great accomplishment for SAC and we can’t wait to see how they go moving forward. Thankyou to staff members Ms Sarah Anderson and Ms Courtney Kerr for coaching the girls. The Open Girls Knockout Netball team also played their first-round matches on Thursday of Week 3. The team were extremely competitive throughout all three matches, fighting hard to win against Charles Campbell College and St Dominic’s Priory. Unfortunately, Kildare came away eventual

winners, with a margin of only three points keeping us from the overall win. We are so proud of the effort and commitment that the girls put in on game-day and in the lead up and look forward to what next year has in store. The SAC Open Knockout Soccer and Volleyball teams are set to play their first round matches this week. We wish them all the best of luck.

Creating Intelligent MachinesThe definition of artificial intelligence (AI), isn’t exactly clear, it is an area of computer science which emphasises the creation of intelligent machines that work to react like humans. Some of the activities computers with AI are designed for include speech/facial recognition, content extraction, machine translation, decision making, speech to text translation and robotics. Students in Years 7, 9 and 10 have been creating innovative AI concepts to solve real world problems for the Australian AI for Good Challenge. Harnaaz Dhillon, Mariam Hazara and Mia Fyfe (Y7) developed the concept of an app which can be downloaded on multiple devices, called Learn Your Culture, in order to support young children who have migrated to Australia to maintain an understanding of their cultural heritage. The app has object, facial and emotion recognition which can detect what situations the user is in. It can interpret meaning of spoken words and emotional responses, including the tone of voice of the person speaking. The app takes data and information from the internet and translates it onto the app. In addition, it also has voice-to-text or text-to-voice which can provide translation and the pronunciation of the word and its origin.

Sophia Vnuk and Rose Hurley (Y7) developed the concept of wearable technology to improve accessibility for people living with cerebral palsy. Its main feature is a google maps-like app showing the best routes, taking into consideration smooth paths, ramps, stairs, construction, crowds, and restrictions (such as Covid-19 restrictions). It can come in several different forms to suit the users’ preferences, including a watch, as an app, or as a device which can attach to a wheelchair, but the data can be transferred to multiple devices.Maisha Khan and Mehakdeep Kaur (Y9) developed an AI concept designed to help women suffering from domestic violence, specifically allowing them to collect evidence that will give them accessibility to legal action. It will be a minute microchip that can easily be worn and concealed on the victim’s jewellery, clothing, shoes, or personal belongings with a strong magnet/clip that can only be removed with a special pin provided by the company. The microchip will have the ability to recognise tone of voice and emotion from the voice of the victim/abuser, it will also be able to record / hold data, track location and send an alert to emergency services when the phone of the victim is taken. Chelsea Chhour, Isobel Leviton and Adie Patrick (Y10) developed an AI concept called Marina in order to help solve the problem by “exorcising” or removing the ghost nets from the ocean. This is done through our three elements: The Buoys, the satellites, and the OCEAN EXORCISTSTM. Each part of our AI works together to solve the problem and clean our oceans.

Learning about Forces with Mobile Science

On Thursday 7 August, Lee came to our school to teach us about science. The focus was ‘forces’. My favourite Prac to watch was the ‘weight distribution’ one, in which he laid out three boards of sharp nails and then slowly suspended himself onto the nails. Eleanor Elston-McComb 7TN

I enjoyed the show because the host was interesting to listen to. He regularly asked students to join him on stage to help demonstrate an experiment, and he asked me! Poppy Martin 7TN

The Mobile Science presenter was really funny and great to watch. He talked about physics, forces and many others interesting things.

The Year 7 cohort was treated with this amazing experience where some people got to go up and help with some demo’s. Alexa Bageas 7RH

From our Careers Department

Parents play an important role in helping their children to make educational choices and career decisions. This role begins when a child is young – as they watch their parents and others around them engage in working life.

As children grow, parents and caregivers can play an even greater part in guiding their career, as well as developing and fostering children’s’ optimism, enthusiasm, energy and curiosity. Parents are encouraged to take advantage of opportunities to discuss possibilities for the future with their child. Children are often curious about how people make decisions about their future and talking about your own work, the path you took and your life choices can provide an important insight into the fact that career development is rarely linear. It can be difficult for children to understand that careers are the result of planning, taking opportunities when they arise, networking, life choices and unforeseen circumstances – all of these factors shape the career development of adults.

The St Aloysius College Careers website: www.saccareers.com.au has a ‘For Parents’ section

containing resources to support parents to assist their child as they explore future study options and careers.

SATAC Applications are now open

University and TafeSA applications open through SATAC in the coming weeks. Year 12 students meet with the Career Counsellor, Ms Murphy throughout Term 3 to learn about the SATAC application process, hear from university representatives, find out about scholarships, HECS/HELP and study pathways beyond school and develop back-up plans for 2021. All Year 12 students will have a scheduled individual career counselling appointment with Ms Murphy, to support their decision making for 2021, with the option for follow up appointments. Appointments for individual career counselling generally occur in students’ free lessons and are communicated to students via their school email.

This is an important time of the year for Year 9, 10 and 11 students selecting subjects for 2021 and for Year 12 students making decisions about future study, training and work. The following resources may be useful for students and their families during this time:

Girl Power WorkshopsOver the last few weeks, the Year 4, 5 and 6 classes have participated in a range of workshops covering the topics of friendship, resilience and identity. Run by Girl Power SA, the workshops based on positive psychology principles aim to foster a sense of confidence in girls as they navigate growing up in an increasingly complex world.

The content in the workshops aligns with the Personal and Social Capability stream of the Australian Curriculum and also support learning that has previously taken place in classrooms.

Drama Space Upgrade!E4 is the Drama room generally used by middle school classes. Until recently, it had no lighting equipment, which meant if the Senior classes were using the theatre they couldn’t have the full theatre experience. This changed last week when lighting and new black curtains were installed to give the students their own dedicated stage to perform on. Some photos are on this page along with a picture of some Year 9s performing their Melodrama plays with great passion!

Ecological Conversion focus for Catholic Schools Week

As part of engaging in the Ecological Conversion focus for Catholic Schools Week, classes were encourage to participate in prayer with all other Catholic school communities in South Australia, as an act of solidarity and integral ecology. Students committed to saying Grace before their meals as we celebrate the fifth anniversary of Laudato Si’.

Grace grounds us in the great reality of being part of and

dependent on creation.

Grace can draw communities together and gives witness to our

faith and our commitment to integral ecology and ecological

conversion.

10-Day Drawing Challenge - Creativity and Skill!Over Weeks 2 and 3, students from across the school took part in a 10-Day Drawing Challenge. Each day, they were given a drawing task to complete. It was wonderful to see the enthusiasm and commitment the students demonstrated as they attempted this challenge. They came together and shared their drawings with the Visual Art teachers and Year 12 Art leaders. We were all impressed with the creativity and skill shown in the drawings they created. Well done girls!

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students met at lunchtime last week to recognise and celebrate National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day. The theme of this year is ‘We are the Elders of Tomorrow, hear our voice’. We learnt to weave bracelets and made some to wear and to give to our friends to celebrate our culture and heritage.
