The Friday Night Retro Disco on 4 August was enjoyed by nearly 100
students.
Our visiting Japanese friends from Ikeda High School enjoyed a night out
even though the weather was absolutely miserable.
Thanks to the OAS students who set up the Hall, blew up balloons and hung
up streamers and decorations. The retro theme with silver curtains and
hanging records looked great.
Many parents and staff also helped supervise - including Mrs Rogers, Mrs
Wilks, Mrs Richardson, Mrs Hennig, Mr Oerman, Mr Hoskin, Miss Bence, Mrs
Bonython, Miss Feijen, Miss Kearton, Ms Stevenson, Mrs Mardell, Mrs
Koopman and Mrs Ali Adams.
Lastly a big thanks to ASH ZULIAN our resident DJ who kept the music
rolling and provided a terrific light show!

PRINCIPAL’S REPORTPRINCIPAL’S REPORT
VET EXPO
Over 300 students attended the
Vocational Education and Training Expo
at Oakbank on Friday 4 August.
It was a great event showcasing the
courses available through the Adelaide
Hills Secondary Schools.
The exhibiters were impressed with the
interest and engagement of the students.
This event is a good introduction to our
pathways counselling program that
commences next week with the SACE
Information Night. Please discuss this with
your child and get involved in the
information nights and counselling
sessions as it leads to subject selection for
2018.
2017 ASSET MAINTENANCE
PROGRAM
Oakbank has been fortunate to receive
$285,000 in the DECD Asset Maintenance
Program.
This is by far the largest grant to schools in
the Adelaide Hills and indicates
confidence in the community and school.
The grant is tied to repairing paving,
replacing floor coverings and external
painting. Maintaining our property in
good order supports student pride in their
school with the associated benefits that
they then look after their facilities better.
We are currently in negotiations with the
department and getting quotes for the
works. As we find out more about the
projects I’ll keep you updated through
the Newsletter.
AMBULANCE COVER
I’d encourage parents to take out
Ambulance Cover whilst their children
attend school.
We have a duty of care to call an
ambulance if we consider that a child
requires one following an accident or
incident.
At times we will contact parents if the
situation is unclear or we think a child
could be transported by their parents to
seek medical attention.
There are often times where we can’t
contact parents and therefore need to
use an ambulance to transport the child
to receive the required medical attention.
A ride to the nearest hospital can cost a
parent over $1,000 - as opposed to
ambulance cover which costs less than
$200 per year for a family.
STUDENT SAFETY IN THE
CARPARK
The safety of our students is being
compromised by the inappropriate
driving behaviour of some parents when
they are using our carpark.
This is a particular concern in the morning
when more people are hurrying off to
work and appointments.
Please obey the 5 kph speed limit
when entering the school
grounds.
An extra minute to get to an appointment
is nothing compared to an injury to a
child.
IKEDA
Our guests from Ikeda leave Oakbank
Area School this coming Sunday 12
August at 5:00am.
The students from Ikeda High School have
been very good representatives of their
country, involving themselves in the life of
the school as well as engaging in a
myriad of activities with their host families.
Our Buddies and Hosts have also been
excellent ambassadors and I thank them
for devoting their time and effort to make
the stay as enjoyable and interesting as
possible for their guests.

Well what can we say? With over 150 people attending the opening night of the art
and photographic exhibition July 28 at the Mount Barker District Library, the art and
photographic teachers are as proud as punch, with support from families, the school
community and wider community.
The exhibition was officially opened and artworks were
judged by Lyndell Daviage, South Australia’s 2017 recipient
of the ‘Order of Australia Medal’ for her contributions to the
community of Hahndorf.
Works exhibited span across the last financial calendar
year and include student works from Reception – Year 13, with the focus areas being tradition-
al arts and design practises, ceramics, textiles, digital art and photography.
Congratulations to the wide range of artists and photographers exhibiting their work, you have
made this exhibition a huge success.
Some special congratulations to our winners from each category receiving a certificate and
prize on the opening night.
Reception – Year 1: Carmelina Bettio
Year 2 – 3: Mitchell Schneider
Year 4 – 5: Jonric Monsalud
Year 5 – 6: Kaia Smith
Year 7 – 9: Tahni Kerr
Senior Art Award: Kye Sinnott
Open Photographic Award: Jared Amuso
Senior Arts award recipient Kye Sinnott and Open Photographic award recipient
Jared Amuso are two talents to watch out for as they begin their search for careers
paths which not only engage them but of which they are passionate about.
The exhibition ‘OAS Igniting Creativity in our Community’, now on show will close
on Saturday 12 August, only to be shipped down to the Royal Adelaide Show in
preparation for students to challenge their competitors from around the State.
Over the past three years, students have achieved the status of ‘Top School’ in the
junior schools photographic sector achieving over 85 prize recipients whilst up
against some of Adelaide’s most elite schools.
All students from OAS entered in the junior arts and craft categories thus far have
also achieved a place.
Creativity at OAS is flourishing due to the new art and photographic facilities which opened late last year, providing
students with open and bright learning spaces, a fully equipped computing suite, a range of different cameras, a class
set of digital WACOM drawing tablets, potting wheels, a kiln and much more.
Students not only spend lessons in their new facilities but they are actively
producing works with the support and guidance of their teachers throughout their
breaks due to the positive, nurturing and inspiring atmosphere OAS and its
teachers have created.
OAS would like to make a special word of thanks to the Mount Barker Library for
providing their facilities for their annual art event and to the six local businesses
Raine and Horne, Klose Foodland, Balhannah Bakery, Oakbank Hotel,
Eckersleys Art Supplies and Harvey Norman Mount Barker who provided the
school with sponsorship.
We would also like to acknowledge the hard work and contribution to our school
community of our Tech boys Kye Sinnott, Brett Rohrloch and Harley Nicholls, our
Singers Hannah and Kimberly Wall and two fantastic parents Samm Richardson
and Olwyn Wilks who assisted the set-up.

Book Week
On Wednesday, August 2, students from Oakbank Area School travelled to Unity
College to compete in an Open Boys Basketball round robin competition. Other
schools involved were Unity College, Birdwood High School and Hills Christian
Community School.
Oakbank's team was made up of Year 12 students Liam Jones, Isaiah Janiak, Kye
McAlley and Aiden Richardson, Year 11 students Caleb Richardson, Kye Sinnott
and Michael Querido and Year 7 student Jalen Bonilla.
On the scoreboard Oakbank lost all 3 games (30-22 to Birdwood, 49-18 to Hills
Christian and 70-34 to Unity) but we were massive winners in many other areas
during the day.
It was the first time that Kye, Aiden and Isaiah had
represented the school in Knockout sports. All three
had a ball, did some great things on the court and
I'm sure that they wished they had got involved in
sports earlier. They were embraced by those on the
team notably Liam, Kyle and Caleb.
To see Year 7 student Jalen competing competently
against much older and larger students was inspiring.
Remember Jalen's name, because I’m sure we'll see
big things from him in the future. His confidence and
leadership at such a young age was particularly
pleasing.
The positive spirit from this Basketball team and the
way in which they supported each other and
cheered each other on was a pleasure to be in-
volved in as a teacher.
A big thankyou should go to Marlee Tonkin for her expertise in scoring and game
tactics as well as Jan Mattingly for driving the bus and parent Cath Sinnott for
coming out and barracking for the team.
On Friday, August 4, students from Oakbank Area School travelled to St
Dominics College in North Adelaide to compete in an Open Girls Badminton round
robin competition. Other schools involved were St Dominics College and Adelaide
High School.
The composition of our team changed a few times before we actually left due to a
variety of external factors affecting students involvement eg. Casual day, Ikeda
exchange. The students who attended the day to compete at St Dominics were Year
12 student Alice Perkins, Year 10 students Sophie Yeates and Jackie Megson
and Year 7 student Zara McPherson.
The other two schools were too strong for
us, but we did get better as the day
progressed with closer games occurring
in our second match against Adelaide.
Credit can go to all of our girls for never
giving up and striving to improve their
results.
The older girls can also be proud of the
way in which they embraced Zara into
the team. She was far from disgraced
and no doubt the experience will be
invaluable for Zara's future development.
A big thank you should go to parent Di Perkins who took some time off of work and
ventured by bus from Adelaide to St Dominics to support the team. It was much
appreciated.
