From the Principal, Welcome to Week 5. This week will be a significant week for our Year 2 students and their families as they take part in the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time. The evening set down for St John’s Primary School is this Thursday, 8th of November.
Some food for thought as the hectic pace of life seems to accelerate into a world of change. Have you ever thought about the world our children will grow up in? Our 2012 Year 6 students will be doing their HSC in 2018. Our 2013 Kinders will finish Year 6 in 2019 and will be doing their HSC in 2025! They may study for another 3 or 4 years which takes them up to 2030 before seeking employment.
In a world being shaped by powerful political, economic, social, technological and ecological forces, we cannot even imagine what the world will be like in 2030. We are already in a ‘knowledge’ or ‘information’ revolution where the range of technology and communication possibilities are doubling almost every week. In a world changing at amazing speed, the values we hold dear in our Catholic faith will be needed to anchor our children’s lives and give them purpose and meaning to the changes happening around them. Our children will be lifelong learners with new priorities on the skills, knowledge and values needed to grow, live and change in the emerging world. We really need to think about the ‘what, how and why’ we are teaching at St John’s Primary today and into the future. One of these tools we are going to be able to use is the new ‘Quality Catholic Schools’ framework released at last week’s Principal’s conference in Bathurst. This is a document I am very excited about and will be discussing at the next P&F meeting.
It is nearing the time where the teachers start to organize classes for next year. Can you please notify the school office if your child is not returning to St John’s Primary School for the 2013 school year. An exit form will need to be completed. This is vital in terms of communication with our Combined Schools Fee Office. The assigning of teachers to classes for next year has not yet been confirmed and will not be published until later in the term. This is due to the employing of new staff, both permanent and temporary. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your child’s class for next year, please contact me this week so that your concerns can be taken into account when the classes are assigned.
After an outstanding effort in Cricket, Year 6 student Maia O’Connor has been named Vice-Captain of the Polding Cricket Team. Congratulations Maia! We are very proud of you and your achievements.
Congratulations to Hunter Asimus and Hayley Nancarrow who receive the Principal’s Award this week.
God Bless,
Anthony O’Leary

For Your Diary: Sacrament of Reconciliation: 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th of November 6.30pm. While Reconciliation is on all 4 nights, our school has been nominated specifically for the night of Thursday the 8th.
Reconciliation This Thursday night, November 8th, many Year 2 students and their families will celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation at St Brigid’s Church beginning at 6.30pm. Anyone in our school community is welcome to come and join us for this special occasion. The following day, all Year 2 will celebrate together with a simple liturgy and the cutting of a cake.
Remembrance Day Next Sunday is Remembrance Day, with the annual Ceremony of the Commemoration of the Fallen to be held at the Cenotaph in Victoria Park at 10.30am. All the Dubbo Community is invited to attend. We will have our own simple school ceremony tomorrow at Morning Line-ups. Once again, we are very lucky to have one of our dads, Mr Wayne Cole, come along and play the bagpipes for us for this occasion.
Restore Hope to Someone Special As part of World Mission Month, the Diocese of Bathurst has given permission for Catholic Mission to trial a new initiative in our schools called ‘Special Someone Lunch Bags’. This year’s focus is helping vulnerable children in the Philippines. As stated by Catholic Mission: “We have been searching for a way to better connect school families with the needs and works of the mis-sionary Church. A concept has been developed around the humble ‘lunchbag’ that is so familiar to all school communities. A quantity of ‘lunch bags’ have been distributed to each classroom and the plan is simply for those families wishing to support this charitable work to provide a donation in the ‘Hope for a Special Someone Lunch Bag’ and return it to the school.” Any families or students can request a bag from their classroom teacher or from my office.
All Saints Day and All Souls Day Year 3 Blue students began All Saints Day last Thursday by sharing information on our school’s name saint, Saint John the Apostle. Our school captains then led us in a Prayer for All Saints. On Friday,a special prayer area was set-up in our school hall at lunchtime for All Souls Day. Many children, and a few adults too, chose to come along and spend some quiet time in private prayer.
Plastic Bag Bonanza! 5 Gold would like to thank you for the terrific support in sending-in plastic bags for our Waste-to-Art Project. We certainly have more than enough now, so thanks!
Movember! It’s been a few years since I’ve embarrassed myself for this good cause, which supports Men’s mental health issues and prostate cancer, so I thought it was time to get involved again! Messages of encouragement and/or donations are very welcome and can be made at http://mobro.co/swogs. Donations or fundraising ideas are also happily accepted at school.
Wishing everyone a good week, David Schwager (Religious Education Coordinator)

Magnificent Mini-Fete!
For their Term 4 Project, Year 5 students were asked to plan, organise and run a Mini-fete for Kinder and
Year One students. The children did an amazing job and a lot of fun was had by all on the day. As well, over $400.00 was raised for the St Vincent de Paul Christmas Appeal! An outstanding effort and thank you to all
the parents who supported the Fete in various ways.

Head Lice
A case of head lice has been report-ed in the school. Please check your children for head lice. Children with head lice should be excluded from school until hair is completely clean of eggs and lice.
Anyone requiring any further information regard-ing treatment is asked to contact the school office for a brochure or your local pharmacist.
School Hats There have been a number of students recently who have lost their school hats. These hats are not making their way to the Lost Property box, so it can probably be as-sumed that other children are taking them home. If your child appears to have more hats than usual, could you please check inside to see if they belong to someone else. If they do have another child's name, please re-turn them to the school office so that they can be returned to their rightful owners. Your cooperation would be greatly appreciated.
