NHK’s R&D results exhibited at Inter BEE 2017

NHK exhibited 8K Super Hi-Vision (8K), internet tech-nology for broadcast services, and integral 3D technology at an exhibition for broadcast technology, Inter BEE 2017, held at Makuhari Messe (Chiba City) from November 15 through 17, 2017. In a joint exhibit booth with the Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association (JEITA), we introduced methods and equipment required for receiving and viewing Super Hi-Vision broadcasts (which are sched-uled to begin in December 2018 as a regular service) at home. Furthermore, to showcase our latest 8K program-production technologies, we exhibited the 8K OB van including a double-speed slow-motion system utilizing high-frame-rate production equipment at 120 Hz developed by STRL. These technologies enable a variety of video representations.
Moreover, in the area called INTER BEE CONNECTED, which introduced the latest trends in collaboration between broadcasting and communications, we displayed Hybridcast Connect X -a basic technology for linking broadcast services and IoT devices. We introduced an example of how viewers can experience a new way of enjoying programs by connecting de-vices such as robots and lighting to their TV.
In the area called INTER BEE IGNITION, which intro-duced new image-expression technologies, two developed ap-plications were exhibited: a virtual art museum-in which paintings can be arranged in a virtual space and viewed freely on 8K monitor, and a pop-up picture book-created by integral 3D technology, enabling natural 3D images to be seen with-out special glasses. In the virtual art museum, by employing a technology for outputting and displaying 8K video images from a PC, a masterpiece can be viewed close-up in ultrahigh-definition images. We will continue our efforts to introduce our R&D results to many people.
