Is there an American who doesn’t enjoy celebrating the Fourth of July? The fireworks set a great optimistic note, a reminder that our country once beat enormous odds to gain its independence. July also is the start of NHPTV’s new fiscal year. Since we became an independent public television station, largely supported by individual contributors, we appreciate more than ever your help in ensuring that quality television is available in New Hampshire. In June we had the privilege of hosting 50 NHPTV members for our 2nd “State of the Station” event. They saw previews of PBS programs, heard about our new documentaries on grassland birds and the Cog Railway, and had a chance to play a round of Granite State Challenge. They also heard about NHPTV’s reach beyond broadcast: from technology to watch NHPTV anywhere to our educational resources for educators and families. Would you like to join us at the next event? Company of Lebanon, NH, by the men who worked there until it closed in 1974.

Densmore bricks were the building blocks of both the local architecture and the economy. Baker Library at Dartmouth College was made from Densmore bricks, as were the Hopkins Center and Memorial Field. Colby-Sawyer College was built from Densmore bricks. Ditto Lebanon City Hall and the Woodstock Inn.

The company, founded in 1800, turned out some 13 million bricks annually, distributed in New England. Hand of Brick • 7/7 at 7:30 PM on NHPTV PRIME

Join Ken Burns For A Screening Of His Upcoming Film, The Roosevelts

Get action. Do things. Be sane. Don’t fritter away your time; create, act, take a place wherever you are and be somebody...Theodore Roosevelt

Ken Burns will present part 5 of his documentary The Roosevelts: An Intimate History at the Hopkins Center for the Arts in Hanover on July 12th at 7 p.m. Afterward, he’ll discuss the film and host a Q & A session. Info & tickets: nhptv.org/events

The seven-part, 14-hour film, which premieres on NHPTV in September, follows the Roosevelts for more than a century, from Theodore’s birth in 1858 to Eleanor’s death in 1962. Over the course of those years, Theodore would become the 26th President of the United States and his beloved niece, Eleanor, would marry his fifth cousin, Franklin, who became our 32nd president. Together, these three individuals not only redefined the relationship Americans had with their government and with each other, but also redefined the role of the U.S. within the world.

The series encompasses the history the Roosevelts helped to shape: the creation of National Parks, the digging of the Panama Canal, the passage of innovative New Deal programs, the defeat of Hitler, and the postwar struggles for civil rights at home and human rights abroad. It is also an intimate human story about love, betrayal, family loyalty, personal courage and the conquest of fear.

The Roosevelts: An Intimate History premieres 9/14
