This issue we have decided to focus on places and spaces. This theme has beeninterpreted both literally and abstractly through the content and images included inthese pages. Needless to say, we think we have come up with a rather impressive line-up

Never fear gadget nerds, weve created a list of ten iPad applications that willentertain, educate and/or organise your life. Weve also included some regulars, like ourprint advertising round up and Ten Things feature.

My work tends to have a strong sense of

English gloom to it, using gritty textures and

washed out, dulled colours. I like to paint

people and often choose subjects who evoke a

sense of solitude and melancholy - themes that

seem to run throughout my work.Keep an eye on this artist. He is the next big thing.

I started my career as an advertisingcopywriter, but I soon discovered that drawing

words is way more fun than writing them anddeveloped a love for hand crafted type.

What I love about typography is that its souniversal, words are everywhere and everyoneunderstands (whether they realise it or not)the importance of well-designed type. I reckonit starts at around age 10 when they teach

you cursive at school. To me, this collectioncelebrates the all-embracing art form of letters.

We asked Field Ofce manager and head chef WillHobson to give us more information about the place.

How did Field Ofce come into being?Pedersen and Lennard wanted to find a happy mediumbetween a showroom for their designs, as well as creatinga place for creative people in the East City of Cape Townto meet and potentially work together. The one way theythought this would be possible was to collaborate withDeluxe Coffeeand various foodies to draw people in toenjoy the space and use the furniture.

Who are the people behind Field Ofce?Luke Pedersen, James Lennard and Will Hobson

What makes Field Ofce different from your averagecoffee shop?It is a place where one could network with youngdesigners and artists, look at or buy art, furniture,

jewellery and clothes, and eat awesome sa rmies like yamamma used to make.

Field Ofce provides a venue for art installations andevents by local designers and artists. Are there anyfuture exhibitions or events to look forward to?Currently Paul Senyol and Andrew Breitenberg areslamming the wall with paint. Then we have an eventcalled Cold Pizza which is the best leftovers from thegraduate shows of Michaelis, Stellenbosch and Rhodes.

What is the best sandwich on the menu?Todays special is often great, but the haloumi andMexican salsa sandwich with rocket and cream cheese isalso awesome. For meat eaters, the chorizo, cream cheeseand rocket sandwich is the best.

If you are an appreciator of typography or hand-drawn lettering, chances are you know of JessicaHische. This Brooklyn-based creative has quicklybecome one of the most respected typographersaround for her unique approach to typography.

While completing her BFA in Graphic Design at theTyler School of Art in Philadelphia, Hische developedan interest in hand-drawn type. This interest waspartly grown out of necessity (not being able to affordnew fonts) and partly by the fact that it made projectsmore cohesive and special.

After graduating, she worked at Headcase Designbefore taking a position as a Senior Designer athighly respected creative rm Louise Fili for two

and a half years. Hische identies this time as havingthe biggest impact on her creative work, particularlydue to her exposure to Filis amazing collection ofvintage type ephemera.

When asked about the value of typography and whypeople are passionate about it, Hische replies:

I think people generally love language, words, phrases, and quotes so to seea great word illustrated appropriatelytypographically can be beautiul.

Illustrated type is a very accessiblekind o art. People with no backgroundin art or design can look at a reallybeautiully drawn word and appreciate

it and you dont have to be on somehigher cerebral plane to get themeaning o it.

Global Acquisitions, now known as Demographica, is an online marketing company with a database of over 3 million people and a broad network ofinuential corporate clients. Nicework was approached to rename and rebrand the company, as well as integrating that design into a new website.

    NRKSAS

    DGRAANAME

The three requirements of the new company namewas that it should be easy to spell, represent thecompanys dynamic character and indicate theirservice offering.

After a rigorous discovery process, numerousbrainstorming sessions and user testing,Demographica was chosen. The name derives fromthe word demographics: statistical data relating tothe population and particular groups in it.

Demographica encapsulates the companys abilityto target specic markets through their extensivedatabase. The shape of the characters in the wordalso lent themselves beautifully to the CI design.

    CORPORATE IDENTITY

People are at the heart of Demographicas service,so the design process began with strategies toinclude people in the lettering. Using a form ofgraphic wit was also a fun and appropriate wayto meet these objectives. The font Din, which isa master font in informational design, lent itselfto the incorporation of human characters thatpopulate the closed letters of the company name.

Simplicity of design was integral to balancinga reputable business prole with an accessibleapproach. The bold design treatment expresses aplayful attitude while communicating the brandsservice orientation.

Colour choice was carefully considered. Wewanted to make the brand as colourful as possiblewithout using too many colours. Therefore brightblue and pink were strategically chosen for theireye-catching and friendly connotations.

    SWELLENDAM

Located in Swellendam, on the doorstepof the breathtaking LangebergMountains GASSs design for thisresidential home employs simple formsand materials that allow the house to liegently on the landscape.

The architectural design uses largely localtextures and materials reminiscent ofthe buildings distinctly Southern Africanorigins. All the water used in the houseis harvested from the site itself, makingthe house self-sustaining, as it has noconnection to the municipal water line.

The house is composed of three discretebox structures forming the three edges ofa private courtyard. The largest boxform that contains the public areas, features a glass faade and uplifted roof, which opens itself up completely toits surrounding environment.

In contrast, the smaller boxes, ankingeither side of the courtyard, include theprivate domains of the bedroom andbathrooms, and on one side, a movieroom. These buildings are made of thickmasonry walls and concrete roofs, whichcreate cave-like, intimate spaces whereone can retreat for solitary quietude.

The buildings that comprise the house areintentionally oriented on the site to engageits scenic surroundings. The line of themain roof structure ascending towardsthe sky, is in direct dialogue with GodsWindow (the locals description for theLangeberg Mountains) - as if the earthwere communing with the heavens.

    HOUSE KILIAN

House Kilian is a new private dwellinglocated on Monaghan Farm nearLanseria, in the north of Johannesburg. The architectural design is a contemporaryinterpretation of the traditional farmhousebecause of its simple forms and large, open volume.

From a formal perspective, the designconsists of two large rectangular volumes

joined in T shape. The r st volume, oriented towards the Crocodile River, contains the public spaces of the house. The living room features large exposedtruss volume and oversized doors that slideaway leaving the main volume completelyopen to the valley. The open roof terracecan be used as an alternative entertaining

space, with an uninterrupted panorama ofthe Magaliesberg mountains, valleys andfarmlands. The second volume containsthe smaller, more private bedroomsand bathrooms, oriented towards theMagaliesberg mountains. A generousplayroom is located at the end of thevolume for children, which opens outonto an enclosed courtyard.

The nishing materials used in thehouse consist of earthy colours andnatural textures juxtaposed with rened, contemporary nishes. A massive coarse-grained brown wall runs the length of thetwo volumes, separating the public areasfrom the private. This wall is contrastedwith the smooth, white screed oors, large aluminium glazed doors andwindows and the slick lacquered nishof the kitchen and bathrooms.
