    INTRODUCTION

    Itaipu dam is a hydroelectric damand largest hydroelectric powergenerator in the world.

    The construction started in theyear jan-1975 and completed andbegan generating electricity in

    may-1984.Total cost of the project is 13.5

    billion pounds (19.6billion dollars).

    The dam is build across Paranariver located on the borderbetween Brazil and Paraguay.

    Main reason behind was forgeneration of hydroelectricity.

    To solve a diplomatic impasseinvolving Brazil and Paraguay.

    For the economic growth of thecountries.

    Client: itaipu Binacional.

    Contractors: ELC Electro consult

    (Italy), IECO (us).

    The key consultant engineer for theproject was an Italian engineer

    named Piero Sembenalli.

    Dam and spillway

    Height: 196 m (643 ft.).

    Length: 7,919 m (25,981 ft.).

    Volume: 12.3 million m (430 millioncu ft).

    Spillway capacity: 62,200 m/s(2,196,572 cu Ft./s).

    Capacity: 29,000 million m

    Catchment area: 1.35 million km.Surface area: 1,350 km .

    Reservoir length: 170 km

    Construction details

    Before construction the Paranriver was diverted and coffer damwas constructed to divert water.

    the dam is constituted by 4 sub dams

    a) earth dam B) rock dam

    C) Main dam D) wing dam

    Portland pozzolonic cement wereused and fe500 grade steel was usedfor construction.

    Refrigerants were used for reduction

    Power generation

    18 generating units were installedusing slip form technique.

    Francis turbine measuring 16m and

    weighing 800tons capacity ofgenerating 715mw of power.

    2 more were installed in 2006-07 for

    generating larger power.It was able to serve 75% of total

    power consumed by Paraguay and25% of brazil.

    the project

    Negotiation of land acquisition.

    Diversion of river Paran.

    Recruitment of skilled workers.Project was delayed for few

    months to investigate the crumblingrock.

    140tons of concrete was needed forevery 20 minutes.
